Welcome to the new WikiProject OSH!

I would like to introduce everyone to the new WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health, created by a merger of WikiProject NIOSH and the defunct WikiProject Occupational Safety. My goal for this WikiProject is to track the state of Wikipedia's coverage of OSH issues and to organize work around it. Emily and I are happy to support the project on behalf of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, although this WikiProject belongs to all of Wikipedia. Please, dig in—I've created some SuggestBot-based work lists to start things off. James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 12:03, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Assessment tagging

Emily, how should we go about tagging articles as part of our project? James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 17:42, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

@James Hare (NIOSH): I'm doing it manually, it should just take another couple days. Emily Temple-Wood (NIOSH) (talk) 17:47, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 03:48, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Psychosocial

The Wikipedia entry for psychosocial hazard is quite new and very brief, but there is already a lot of information on psychosocial work factors (including hazards) scattered throughout Wikipedia. These articles include: [list moved to User:James Hare (NIOSH)/Psychosocial]. Should there also be a Wikipedia article on psychosocial factors in the workplace that include the hazards as well as the good things? Should the article on psychosocial hazards be folded into a generalized work factors one? James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 19:55, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

R and S phrases in Chembox

Hi, I've started a discussion on what to do about R and S phrases in the chembox (they're defunct now) and as that's very relevant material to this WikiProject I just though I'd leave a note about it. ( details here) --Project Osprey (talk) 08:50, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Agricultural safety and health in nursing education

Agricultural safety and health is not frequently incorporated into basic baccalaureate nursing curriculum. A nursing professor with responsibilities in public health nursing education and laboratory experiences may have the autonomy to both teach this content and to provide experiential learning in this area. Exposure identification and control strategies for chemical, biological and physical hazards are only a few of the occupational issues encountered by nurses in practice. While some nursing students have an agricultural background, many do not. However, once they graduate they may take opportunities to work in rural communities. In clinics and other medical facilities, patients will present with a symptom of an injury or illness that resulted from an exposure on a family farm or production site. If the nurse knows to conduct an occupational and environmental history with that patient, the discovery of the etiology of the condition may be clearly illuminated.

Dr. Lisa Schiller, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, School of Nursing and Health Sciences, is an example of a professor incorporating agricultural safety and health into basic nursing education. http://www.uwec.edu/news/stories/student-nurses-make-house-calls-on-the-farm_15747

Maintenance work

To let everyone know, I will be making a change to the {{Load WikiProject Modules}} Lua module, used on this project to render the different sections. This change involves, among other things, moving the different section headers out of the subpages and onto the main WikiProject page. This change will make the WikiProject easier to use and maintain. During this change, there may be a brief time window where the WikiProject page looks broken. Once the changes are finished, everything should be restored to normal. If not, purge your cache and it will work. If there are any bugs, please let me know promptly on my talk page. Thank you, Harej (talk) 01:27, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

This work is now done. Please let me know if there are any bugs. Harej (talk) 02:22, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Unconfined vapor cloud explosion redirect

There doesn't seem to be an article about vapor cloud exposions, both unconfined vapor cloud explosion and vapor cloud explosion redirect to thermobaric weapon. Given the long list of deadly accidents (San Juanico disaster, Kingman Explosion, 1970 Propane vapor cloud explosion in Port Hudson, Texas City Refinery explosion, etc...), wouldn't gas explosion be a better target for the redirects? Transportation of compressed gas cylinders

If this is within the scope of the project, does anyone have access to the legislation? I am looking for restrictions on the transportation of scuba cylinders in the USA. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 13:30, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Pbsouthwood, I believe it would be in-scope to the extent that it could pose a potential health hazard to the person transporting the compressed gas cylinders. I am not sure which specific pieces of legislation would cover this, but it would certainly be covered under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations. HIRA article needed?

At present there is no article on Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis or redirect using this name or the usual abbreviation/acronym HIRA. Currently HIRA is an article on a protein coded by the gene of the same name. I don't know how important HIRA is to this project, but in commercial diving it is central to occupational health and safety, and often a legal requirement for a diving operation. I think the article should exist, but would like comment from others, particularly on how important it would be to the project, and whether it should be a redirect to an existing article, and in that case, which article. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 12:07, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

US legislation regulating diving operations

I need a list of relevant US legislation, Federal and state, for new article list of legislation regulating underwater diving. Any help would be appreciated. Links to official sources would be good. Referenced listing in the article would be better. additional paragraphs on the scope of each item would be best. Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 10:31, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Chemicals in project category

Is it really sensible to put large numbers of chemical articles within scope of the project? After all, just about all chemicals have some sort of health and safety aspect. You might just as well make Wikiproject Chemistry a sub-project. To my mind this just makes the Wikiproject categories less useful. SpinningSpark 10:11, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Spinningspark, I am not tagging all chemicals, but those that have come up in the context of occupational safety and health research, which is significantly fewer than the 14,688 chemicals tagged by WikiProject Chemicals. We want to make sure these articles are on our radar. James Hare (NIOSH) (talk) 10:51, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health/Archive 1 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:05, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Proposal - Userbox for our WikiProject

So, a number of other WikiProjects have a userbox that you can add to your user page to show membership with the project. A while back, I decided to create a userbox for myself to show my membership with this project. I thought I'd maybe see if there was intrest in adopting it as the official userbox.
This was the design I came up with, using safety orange for the background color, the project logo for an image and a 'Safety First' message:

This user is a member of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health.
Safety First.

Maybe we could do alternate colors, or come up with a Wikipedia-esque phrase like 'Edit Safely' or something. Anyone else have some thoughts or opinions on this idea?--The Navigators (talk)-May British Rail Rest in Peace. 05:17, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

At small scale the project logo looks more like a flower with roots attached. I had to go to the project page to see that is was a helmet and gloves. For a userbox I think you need to rethink the logo to a simpler form. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 08:40, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
@Martin of Sheffield:Okay, what about one of these?
This user is a member of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health.
Safety First.
This user is a member of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health.
Safety First.
This user is a member of WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health.
Safety First.

Any other ideas for an image that says 'occupational safety and health'?--The Navigators (talk)-May British Rail Rest in Peace. 06:18, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Filtering-facepiece mask ontology

A filtering-facepiece mask, not certified to any national standard

There is a discussion at Talk:N95 mask#Page move, concerning the division into articles of the information summarized in Mechanical filter (respirator).

Specifically, should there be an article called filtering facepiece respirator (or filtering-facepiece mask, if it includes lookalike uncertified filtering-facepiece masks)? Should there be separate articles for filtering-facepiece masks that are certified to each of the national standards ("respirators" in US terminology)? That is, separate articles for N95 mask (US) and FFP mask (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, EU) etc.? One or the other? Both? Neither? Thanks! HLHJ (talk) 19:04, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Sorting categories:Noise control and noise reduction

Category:Noise reduction has Noise reduction as its main article, on the topic "the process of removing noise from a signal" but it contains many articles on the topic of Noise control, on the topic "strategies to reduce noise pollution or to reduce the impact of that noise". I'm creating Category:Noise control with Noise control as the main article, and moving applicable articles over there. Please take a look or comment as needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dennis Bratland (talkcontribs) 16:34, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Subject areas

I am working on an overhaul of the WikiProject. As part of this I am working on breaking down Occupational Safety and Health into smaller subject areas, to allow for a focused breakdown in that area. These category sets should overlap to some extent. Please let me know if anything is missing.

Large amount of content removed from Mercury

Large amount of content has been removed from Mercury (element) recently. Would someone please take a look? --Dustfreeworld (talk) 02:07, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Cleanup list inconsistency

The {{WikiProject cleanup listing}} template on the main page doesn't quite work since it directs to a page with the "Safety" and "Health" capitalized instead of the lowercase typing that works properly (https://bambots.brucemyers.com/cwb/bycat/Occupational_safety_and_health.html). I believe this needs to be fixed on the other end of the template/bot but it may be worthwhile to make note of it or add a different link as a workaround. This is contingent on anyone using that list in the first place though (I do, personally). Reconrabbit (talk|edits) 16:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
