WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was   Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was   Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were   Ruby2010 (submissions),   Cwmhiraeth (submissions),   Miyagawa (submissions) and   Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from   Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hold on...

G'day from Oz; another reason for the reverts was that there was already a perfectly good Cat before Ryan came along and unilaterally started populating the 'in England' category. Cheers YSSYguy (talk) 00:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Looking at Category:Aviation accidents and incidents in England, it wasn't created by Ryan - if it needs to be depopulated and upmerged to the UK cat, it needs to be discussed at WP:CFD. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict & interrupted internet service) Well, the 'in the UK' category. I'm a bit puzzled is all; you have done exactly the same thing yourself in the past - see here and here for instance. YSSYguy (talk) 00:34, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
At the time I did the reverts, the "...in England" category had been created by a Ryansock and was nuked accordingly. Since then another, legit user legitimately created the category. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:42, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I see. As long as his contribs are expunged to the maximum anount possible and as many people as possible are aware of his pariah status, I don't mind. I was just aiming for a consistent approach. 'Bye for now. YSSYguy (talk) 00:46, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
No worries; he does need to be WP:SHUNned! - The Bushranger One ping only 00:47, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Inaccurate information

Hey there. I come to you with an interesting dilemma in regards to the 2012 Formula Renault UK season article page. At present, an IP has placed completely inaccurate information on the page; I believe it to be the IP entering his own name on the page, with a made-up team name to boot. According to Google, the only known reference to a "Kieran Baxter" appears to be a kart racer, rather than a single-seater driver. Likewise for a "Ktech Grand Prix". If I revert the page once more, I'd be in violation of 3RR; the IP has been warned by myself, and another user, after a similar edit pattern on the 2010 Formula Renault UK season page. As much as it pains that I cannot revert the page, I am a bit of a perfectionist in wanting it with all the right info, if you catch my drift! Haha. Regards, Craig(talk) 02:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Looks to me like a classic case of somebody trying to add what they WP:MADEUP, eh? I've reverted the vandalism and semi-protected the page for a week; that should solve the problem (I hope!). :) - The Bushranger One ping only 02:26, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, absolutely...it just goes to show that you don't realise how many times such IPs want to get their way, and make themselves famous on Wiki...not all IPs, but so many...I think with our combined experiences on the site, we must have seen many thousands attempt to get "some fame". Haha! Should solve the problem I feel, many thanks. Makes my job a little easier now. ;) Craig(talk) 02:30, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Speedy renaming of sportscar entrant categories

Hi The Bushranger. I have started a discussion at WP:SCR about the recent speedy renaming of Category:World Sportscar Championship entrants and Category:Can-Am entrants. DH85868993 (talk) 14:07, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Replied there, thanks. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 14:39, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Umm... Hi!(?)

Yeeah so... I just got a message saying I should stop editing articles on Wikipedia... but... I haven't edited any articles on Wikipedia recently... haven't actually been on half the articles I've been accused of editing...

...apparently you're the one that told me to stop... I think...

  • doesn't really know what he's doing right now*

Anyways, just wanted to give you a heads up that I'm not actually doing anything. I was just looking through the List of Touhou Characters page when I got the message...

...pretty sure nobody else using this IP address has any interest in editing Wiki either... no idea who's making the edits or how they're doing it...

...anywhoo! You can delete this message/edit/whatever-it-is once you get it... I'm not really sure how to message you personally so this is the only way I can inform you I guess... I'm not even sure if this message has a real point...

So... Yeah, have a good one! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.168.144.150 (talk) 21:39, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi there - it's entirely possible that that warning was aimed at another user; dynamic IP addresses can cause that to happen sometimes! If you're editing within the rules, that's perfectly cool - although I'd suggest creating an account so you don't get cases where IP-hopping vandals' warnings wind up seemingly addressed to you. - The Bushranger One ping only 22:43, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

In reviewing your close to this thread, I suppose we could offer to impose the "super-duper special double-ban". :-) — Ched :  ?  17:50, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Or we could do what NASCAR does, and put them on double secret probation? ;) - The Bushranger One ping only 19:19, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
LMAO ... guess Knaus is appealing that though. :) ... cool ... didn't realize you were a NASCAR fan. Whatcha been workin on? — Ched :  ?  00:29, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Fantastic .. I'll take a look. I have a few old things like 1950 in NASCAR in my sandbox .. been meaning to get back to. Used to work with RoyalBroil a lot on that stuff. Looking at taking anything to GA or anything? — Ched :  ?  00:35, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Yea - some of the peer review stuff can be a pain .. I remember years ago working for months finding refs, expanding, and trying to take ... ummm Daytona qualifiers or something to FL .. when one guy came in and say "too much info" .. I just kinda dropped it. Might ask you to have a look at a few things to get your opinion though down the road. Always like to have a fans input on stuff. — Ched :  ?  00:41, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Too much info? Huh. Anyway, feel free to ping me if you have stuff you want looked over! - The Bushranger One ping only 00:43, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

    • Nice work; it's almost to B-class - I'd like to see references on the "Operators" and "Aircraft on display" sections, and I think you need to go into the Internet Archive for refs 2 and 5 as Skyhawk.org seems to be kaput - but that's all that's needed before it gets kicked up a notch. • Thanks, still trying to find them but that 3 aircraft cockpits comparison photo was more for the purpose of showcasing Lockheed's role culminating in the unique TA-4S, built out of necessity to avoid having a different engined aircraft. • I think in this case the best option is WP:RBI/WP:DENY. It avoids what I call "baby cockatoo syndrome" - if you give them attention in response to their yelling, they learn that yelling = attention! - The Bushranger One ping only 19:37, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

On another note

  • BR, you still remember that trollish IP-hopping impostor who kept stalking my edits and reverting me on several article pages? Methinks he's back as User:F16vista‎ on Chengdu J-10, his first edit made my alarm bells went off by way of his edit summary (which is his usual style of getting my attention by faking/imitating the edits of another editor) when he made reference to "cnair.top81.cn" that an earlier editor (User:Jeremy Sun) had put in, along with a large dosage of copyvios and was blocked in the end. User:F16vista has not been blocked, yet, but I suspect it to be another throw-away account, any advice on how best to deal with this or if a CU is required? --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 19:33, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

  • FWIW, I'm pretty sure that Jeremy Sun is not F16vista but F16vista could well be that impostor. Also, another admin did emailed to me questioning about the possibility of a BLOCKED editor behind all this but its been a few years since he was blocked and banned, how's that going to help in opening an SPI? Finally, you've got mail~! --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 19:53, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Hmm. I'd say insufficent data on F16vista so far but definitly worth keeping an eye on, that's for sure, as there's seems to be a demonic WP:DUCK of some sort here! As for stale CUs...unless there's been a confirmed sock in the last couple months (I -think- it's 3 or 4 months) CU will be stale and thus useless, alas! - The Bushranger One ping only 19:58, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

The deletion of the Hawker Hunter in service with Swiss Air Force page

  • Bushranger I know you get a lot of request and comments that begin with "If you delete that page....!" This is not one of them. I am posting on your talk page to try and keep the emotions down where Stephano does read.

I will state right up front that, that page does meet policy for deletion. A lot of other pages on Wiki do also, but are not deleted -- ie and an exception does not change policy either. Stephano has really dug a big hole for himself, and is still digging. As one Wiki Essay advises "Step Away From the Carcass." he can't mainly because of his wounded sense of honor - ie while we agree he should not, he still does. He just can't do it. And worst his fixation as Dave as an enemy where there was one has made him one. But I worked with him on a few pages that involved Italian weapons and he was extremely helpful. What ever his faults he is good in his field. He left me a message and I read the Talk:Hawker Hunter. I told him in the beginning he would not like my advise. I advised him to do one or two things (I would have advised him to step away but I knew that was not a starter): 1> To take down a lot of his entries on the Hunter page and re-enter it slowly so where editors good in English and Aviation could look it over and offer recommendation. Maybe a small paragraph once a week or twice a month. 2> I did not know he started it but to post the info on a Swiss AF page or Hunter in Swiss Service page. The Swiss have a habit of buying combat aircraft and keeping them in service longer than the country that designed and built them does -- eg the /DH Venom fighter/bomber. He took the second option to the bank.

And if that page is deleted NOW or real soon it will be more than rubbing salt in his wounded honor, but to him it will be acid. Could the other administrators consider put off deleting that page for several months (I will even enter it in my calender and inform you when times up) or else merge the information that has reliable citations to the Hunter article? I know Wiki is not a hospital or the UN. But I honestly don't see the harm in allowing that page to exist a few more months. Although when I first came to Wiki I was Wiki-Stupid and have not advanced very far since then. I will even do hard search on Swiss Hunters and finds some reliable citation. GAWD, knows I do enough for other articles that have nil or no citations -- ie recently the Martin P6M SeaMaster page and Martin's attempt to market a civilian version called the SeaMistree. Why? Only a Martian could explain. In addition I would like to comment on Dave in this affair. He tried to help and talk Stephano back off this one way ladder he has climbed up. He is to be commended on this issue. He really tried and I am making one last attempt. I sent Stephano the essay Wikipedia:No angry mastodons but I don't know if he read it.

Finally, thanks for taking the time to read this long message. But if you consider I have no business in this discussion, say so and that will be the last message I post anywhere on Wiki on this subject. Jack E. Hammond --Jackehammond (talk) 05:01, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

A word from you would be nice to balance out my outburst and lastly FWIW, I'm done talking to the self-righteous/sanctimonious whining jerk. Paraphrasing a line from the Hunt for Red October, "Conn, aye. All right, Ryan, we just unzipped our fly. Mr. Thompson! Open the outer doors, firing point procedures. • Indeed. I don't know jack about F-5s. I also don't know the ins and outs on interaction bans, so let me ask the obvious: Dave, ahem, why the hell did you leave that note (which you may call polite if you like) on his talk page? Why not run to the first admin you see, like me or Bushranger? Sure, I think they violated something (though I don't know the exact terms of the ban) at F-5, but your leaving a note doesn't help matters--and now they're on my talk page. Bushranger, fo shizzle, what's to be done here? Drmies (talk) 02:08, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
  • For the record, this Indian boy is a troll or was trolling for fire (BR, this reminds me of OH-6 flying low deliberately to draw for enemy fire), look at his comment and you'll see. Note that I have a very low tolerance for trolls and vandal, so as such I have been the target of such imbeciles from the start of my wiki-career. BR is well aware and can vouch for me that I have a secret-admirer/stalker/impostor out there who would actually stalk and harass those editor(s) who harass me while imposting as me, what I'm doing is nothing less than trying to deflect that from the Indian boy should he carry on with harassing me and then getting that secret-admirer/stalker/impostor to latch on his tail instead. Yes, I may have been a wee bit mad at that moment when I commented to him but I'm not stupid. Him, on the other hand, is just plain stupid for going down that path until eventually that secret-admirer/stalker/impostor reacts to him. What are we to do then? Lastly, the Indian boy had actually picked a very convenient date (end of our one month mutual interaction ban) to revert my edit so I'm fully entitled to be mad at him for being an moronic/insensitive jerk, especially at the condescending tone in his edit summary during that particular revert. Tell me now, does it take two hands or one to clap? In honour of that interaction ban, I've stayed away from him for one whole month (to the letter and the spirit of the law that requires of me but he did so only to the letter) and yet at the end of it, he has the galls to come pick on my edit? Come on, how oxymoron can that be that he is indeed trolling by all account? And both times, he goes to ANI, he doesn't have the courtesy to post an ANI-notice on my page, tell me now if that is not trolling? Forgetting twice? How convenient for an excuse, the nerve of this boy. --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 11:45, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Dave, let's think about this. The community is out of patience with both of you. You may be in the right – I don't really care. But you're both going to be blocked if you both continue down this path. Stay high in the sky and don't partake in the fighting; if he's as bad as you say, he'll run out of rope soonish. • To set the record straight, I've stopped posting on his talk page (and avoided his crap on ANI) but he's sancitmonious one carrying on with his whining at ANI and we both get blocked? Seriously, I beg to differ... the radar is not supposed to lock on a threat that is travelling away and another closing in fast, both at the same time. Don't you think so? --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 11:57, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Lafayette Escadrille (film) and Men with Wings connection

What a rotten film to end an illustrious career, no wonder William Wellman was so incensed at the cavalier treatment dolled out by Jack L. Warner in re-editing and re-staging Lafayette Escadrille (film), from a man he personally detested. FWiW, however, I was suitably inspired to rewrite the article as it was a mess, and had no reference sources to back up any of the odd claims made about Wellman.

LOL, don't know why I didn't just Google it first. Any truth to the rumors George Lucas was going to buy the rights to the film and CGI in Harrison Ford to replace Alec Baldwin? 28bytes (talk) 19:31, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Baldwin was the only actor to play Jack Ryan who actually fit the role, I thought! But yes, it's Red October, and the book was much better than the film (not that the film was anything but good, but that stock footage...!) - The Bushranger One ping only 20:04, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, the stock footage was kind of oddly added in. :P Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 20:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Photo of Michael Stroukoff you provided

Greetings,

I'm curious about the origin of the photo posted in the article about Michael Stroukoff Sr., my father. In all honesty, I don't think it actually is a picture of him. I'm a newbie here, and am not sure how to upload a copy of a known portrait of him. Here is a link to the image on Ancestry.com

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8912076/person/-876547621/media/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid%7cpgNum

If nothing else, it's a significantly better image of him; it's a portrait from the 1950's.

Regards,

Ann Stroukoff McGady MamaAnnie828 (talk) 09:38, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunatly, I can't see your link; I don't remember how I found the photo (likely just Google Images...) originally. In order to upload the image, what you do is click here, and then upload the image from your computer to Wikipedia. Is it a free image? If not, copyright information needs to be included for fair use, but I can help with that if you need it. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 18:12, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

User script listing cleanup project

I'm leaving this message for known script authors, recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts, and those who've shown interest in user scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 04:47, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well!   Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's   Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's   Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to   Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to   12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from   Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Cat Creek, Montana

Really? Isn't it possible that the "lion" story isn't a hoax? The editor in question seems to have some actual background about the town and its history. Then again, I could be wrong here. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 15:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC).

Nope, there is zero chance that there are any lions in Montana that don't have the prefix "mountain" to their name. There are precisely zero reputable sources for such a thing. It might be worth mentioning that there's a local legend regarding the presence of Panthera leo vis-a-vis Puma concolor, but to claim, repeatedly, that the King of Beasts is holding court when not one reputable source says so...nnnnnnnope. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:54, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
After reading some of the histories of Montana today and even delving into the back story of Cat Creek, I have yet to find any mention of the "lions" but all kinds of information about mountain lions. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 23:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC).

User Amarru

Hello Sir

I suspect that the user "Amarru" is a sockpuppet (double profile) because he is behind the same false edits and vandalism in threads concerning Spanish football (especially the thread called "Football records in Spain") The sock puppet I am referring to is a now banned user RealCowboys.

The user might also be another editor who got blocked twice whose latest username was Seaboy123.

If you could check his IP address I would be thankful. If it is not the same person I apologize and ignore this post.

Thank you.

--Suitcivil133 (talk) 23:48, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, thanks for the heads-up. I've looked over the contribution history of all three editors, and while there are some similarities in editing style and subject, there's just enough differences that I can't declare any to be WP:DUCKs. Checking IPs and such has to be done by those with more tools than me, though - I believe there's enough of a connection here though that I'll open an SPI. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:58, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Yes, after seeing his vandalism in the "Football records in Spanish football" thread I am inclined to conclude that he resembles the banned user Seaboy123 more considering the fact that RealCowboys has had 2 accounts banned, one of them recently. So you might be spot on. I also saw his profile where he wrote "Dead man walking" - maybe that is a reference to him being a sockpuppet.--Suitcivil133 (talk) 21:08, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello Bushranger;)

Do you know how the situation looks like regarding the user Amarru? He is still deleting the same correct information and was recently blocked for 24 hours. Was it ever found out it he was a sockpuppet or not?

Thank you.--Suitcivil133 (talk) 00:22, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Procedural admin question for you

In looking at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Voltage (Skrillex album) (3rd nomination), which was started on 27 March and should have been closed by now, it looks like the nominator didn't list it properly and it doesn't appear on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, which might explain why it hasn't been closed. It is also the first nom, not the third, despite the title. It was nominated for WP:PROD twice before, which confused things. The case is an open-and-shut WP:CRYSTAL one which all comments added are to delete it. How do we fix the procedural problems here? - Ahunt (talk) 15:07, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Ouch, that's a pretty malformed deletion attempt by the nom. It is pretty open-and-shut and has consensus so far, but the fact it was not transcluded to the log means that it needs to be relisted, and run for another week. I'll get right on that - The Bushranger One ping only 23:02, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi

Hey Bush, I'm not sure the word "apology" is the word I'm looking for here, but I did want to comment on my recent view on an ANI thread. (KW block). To be honest, it's a very VERY rare time that I don't fully agree with either your or Salvio's views individually, the fact that I disagreed with BOTH of you in the same thread absolutely astounds me. I do completely understand your (collective) thoughts on the matter, it's just that I don't agree in this case. I'll also admit I'm not surprised by the action either. In fact, I fully expected to see strong support from the community - and that does indeed appear to be the case at this time. As I mentioned, I can't actually apologize for my views because it's simply the way I think on the matter, but I am at a loss for words at having to disagree with you. I hope you won't hold that against me, as I certainly don't have any disrespect for either one of you. To be honest, when I read through that cat. rename discussion, I was surprised at KW's behavior there. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "disruption", but I was surprised to see him posting in what I viewed to be a rather childish fashion. (the posts, not him as a person). I'd think it reflects more on him than on any of other people in that thread. Anyway - it's a very rare thing indeed to disagree with you, and I did want to note that. Cheers to all. — Ched :  ?  16:15, 5 April 2012 (UTC) (PS - I'm going to drop a link to this post at Salvio's as well since I mentioned him)

There's no worries here! :) Nothing held against you at all, it's all cool. Sometimes even people we think the most alike with disagree, and sometimes strenously - and that's a good thing. Life would be boring if we all thought alike, after all, and both holding a position and sticking to it is something worthy of respecting! So, like I said, no worries a'tall and hopefully the editing will be easy and vandal free! :) - The Bushranger One ping only 22:59, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Great. I was pretty sure it was that way, but just wanted to check. Hey - I have a few things I'd like to get done (yea, time I got back to editing). You enjoy the old history of NASCAR at all? Stuff like User:Ched Davis/1954 in NASCAR.? There's still a few years missing in that group. (they redirect to current series right now). I like to edit with other folks rather than just doing stuff on my own is why I'm asking. Just curious. — Ched :  ?  00:20, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Well I do find things like that quite intriguing, but I lack any sort of sources at all on Ye Olde Stuff, alas! (I'm pretty sure the title for when you move it into articlespace should be 1954 NASCAR Grand National Series just fyi ;) ) - The Bushranger One ping only 03:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
I'll double-check on that before I move it out. User:Royalbroil used to be very up on that stuff - not sure if he still is. Great guy, but I haven't talked to him in a while. Need to drop by his page to say hi - would be a good excuse to visit. — Ched :  ?  23:46, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

MilHist contest article

Hi there, saw your comment and I've returned the assessment to B -- I've never known a case where images were mandatory; the infobox should satisfy the supporting materials criterion. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:18, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

It occured to me I might should comment there in case somebody asked about the discrepency - thanks for the check. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 23:44, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Only a hunch...

Yeeeeep, just the username there has the Ryan-senses quacking. Eyes on it! - The Bushranger One ping only 23:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
He's off and running; there's now no doubt in my mind that it's him. I particularly like this edit where he 'fixes' a mistake by making another one. Gotta admire his work! YSSYguy (talk) 14:27, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Quack, quack! A duck in time for Easter to be served with orange sauce. Sometimes you have to wonder why these mad-bomber sockpuppetteers don't put half the effort into "straightening up and flying right" as they do into their evasive ways! - The Bushranger One ping only 07:00, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Operation Wagonwheel: Why did you create a bad link?

Operation Wagonwheel is still a highly classified US Govt operation. All that can be said is it was a multi-agency, international anti-drug interdiction operation. Either make the article or pull the bad link. - el jefe — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.130.233.20 (talk) 23:14, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Please read WP:REDLINK. It is not a 'bad link', it is a yet-to-be-written article, and redlinks are desirable because they encourage people to write the article. As for it being "highly classified", Wikipedia has quite a few articles on "black projects". - The Bushranger One ping only 23:16, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Was that nomination to split them into both categories or to split them into one or the other? The nomination says 'and' but I think you meant 'or'. Vegaswikian (talk) 23:56, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

It's meant to be split with some into one and some into the other. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:57, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Malta Story

Found another aviation-themed film, notable in the blending of archival and on-location shooting to make a credible Second World War-era epic. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 18:17, 8 April 2012 (UTC).

Hmm, that certainly looks like something I need to add to the to-watch list! - The Bushranger One ping only 18:18, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Check it out now, a lost gem that actually involved Malta and many of its inhabitants in recreating the monumental 1942 attacks. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 02:00, 10 April 2012 (UTC).

Well, well, another confirmed match. Since I've never dealt with it, how would a case like this go about being developed? Calabe1992 16:27, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Time to break out the orange sauce. And honestly I have no idea either, never built up one before - although there is another Skywalker, I mean, another case I'm familiar with that should probably be LTA'd too... - The Bushranger One ping only 16:31, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Geez! Chanaky is nothing compared to that. I'll take a look at the long-term abuse cases and see what is happening. Calabe1992 16:33, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Hen houses

Here's some the radar laid earlier!
Just a note to say thanks for copy editing the articles I started on the Soviet radar stations at Balkhash and Olenegorsk, and thanks for nominating them for WP:DYK. I've been producing a few of these over Easter - another 5 Hen Houser is Mishelevka Radar Station. It's great when people edit your work as it seems that a lot of my Soviet early warning articles never get looked at by anyone else :) I'll copy across some of your amendments to the other articles (as appropriate) and remind myself to add in NATO codenames.. Secretlondon (talk) 23:04, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Now for something completely odd, The Adventures of Tartu

One of Robert Donat's few wartime films; it features an unusual use of a captured wartime Junkers Ju 88 bomber, enlisted as a "reel" star, possibly the only time this ever happened in the Second World War. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 00:48, 11 April 2012 (UTC).

Please tell the reason

I was shocked to find in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Dave1185/Archive_5 that you were doubting me as a sock of User:Chanakyathegreat....What was the reason for your suspicion?...Is it the page Future of the Indian navy which I then created?..If it is, then I would like to tell you that, when I created the article, I had no idea about Chanakya or anything else.As there was a page Future of the Indian Air Force, I wanted to create a page for Navy too.Morever, I was a newbie then!... Please notify me on my talk Regards Srikar Kashyap (talk) 08:29, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

There's some articles where, regretfully, Chanya's tainted them to the point that any new editor who appears working on them has to be regarded with suspicision as one of his socks. =/ - The Bushranger One ping only 14:27, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

  • I'd say that given your apparent commitment to the Wiki and (speaking honestly) that you haven't been turned up in any of the many SPIs that have been run seeking Chanya's sleepers since that original post, that I'm willing to extend the benifit of the doubt, yes. - The Bushranger One ping only 07:01, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Unfortunatly, too many proven socks in the past have done exactly that...! The best way to establish your lack of sockiness is to be a continued good-faith, good-content editor who doesn't get into the same type of arguments the one who caused all the trouble got into. - The Bushranger One ping only 07:05, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Balance

In the interest of balance it would seem fair that you post a similar warning on BHG's page for her multiple instances of incivility. Sorry? Oh, I see. Ericoides (talk) 18:42, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

If I'd seen any, I would, but she wasn't the one referring to another editor as "miss bossy boots" (incivil and sexist at the same time, too...) - The Bushranger One ping only 18:51, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, of course. Please note I called her "bossy boots", which – although clearly incivil – has no sexist overtones[7][8]. The "miss" (and presumably, therefore, the sexism) is all yours. How telling... Where I come from we'd call that a Freudian slip. That you, despite popping up wherever she makes an "acidulous" comment in these discussions – I'd list these, but really I have better things to do with my time – can't see her incivility on most of the Old Fooian threads, whilst another distinguished editor can, says everything we need to know, and surely justifies that other incivil remark I made. But please do carry on, as you are both the ones who rule this little place. Ericoides (talk) 14:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm flattered to be another distinguished editor. (I sympathize with your withdrawing from those discussions, Ericoides, I have almost done the same. Something has gone wrong there, they all seem to have a foregone conclusion.) BHG is not the rudest of all admins, but in my view she can't bear opposition and pursues points too ferociously. Also (as someone put it) she is one of those who can't see her opponent drowning in a swamp without jumping in after him with a knife. Moonraker (talk) 15:12, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
OK, there was no "miss", and I apologise for misremembering the exact words, but just "bossy boots" is sexist by itself...as it isn't something you'd have said to a male opponent, yes? Anyway, it's obvious that we unfortunatly have opposite opinions on this issue and on what constitutes personal attacks/incivility vs. frustration, but it might be best if we just agree to disagree here. However, I will point out that even if BHG's comments were/are (depending on your point of view) uncivil, "tit for tat" incivility is never justified. - The Bushranger One ping only 17:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate the semi-apology, thanks. 1. We do not have opposite opinions on what constitutes incivility; I have admitted I was incivil to our incivil crusader colleague, indeed it was my intention. It pained me to do so as I find her manner appalling, but I apologised to her shortly afterwards, as I'm by and large a polite sort of chap. 2. You should really also have the good grace to admit that you were wrong to throw the tremendously incivil term "sexist" around, something to which I take great exception. To use the Google results so beloved of our chum as a means of settling things, the phrase "he is a bossy boots" is used 12,400 times (or 3 pages worth, as there's lots of duplication), while the phrase "she is a bossy boots" is used 14,600 times (or 3 pages worth, as there's lots of duplication). Moreover, the dictionaries I've cited make no mention of it being a gendered expression. And I'd certainly call a man a "bossy boots" if he behaved like our colleague in that hilarious exchange linked to above by Moonraker (don't you think her head might actually explode if she carries on for much longer like that?). As a result, I'm not sure what your point is, apart from not wishing to admit you were doubly wrong and clutching at non-existent and frankly offensive straws. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 19:13, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
No grasping at straws, simply unaware of the way the slang worked (I don't keep up with slang too much). So you have my apologies for that, and I stand corrected. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:07, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Fine; thanks again. Ericoides (talk) 05:31, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Reopened ANI discussion

Back on 28 March I closed a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents, which I thought was finished with. You were one of the contributors to the discussion. Another editor later posted a further comment below the closed section, and, having read that comment, I decided that the issue was perhaps not as unambiguously finished as I had thought, so I reverted my closure. Nobody posted any more comments to the section, and it is now archived at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive744#Wiki user:Fasttimes68 is vandalizing pages referencing celebrity model Stephanie_Adams. However, an editor has now suggested that I should have informed those who contributed to the discussion that it had been reopened, so I am doing so. It is very likely that nobody had any more to add, but if you would have done so then I apologise for not informing you at the time. If you do wish to say any more about it then it will be necessary to open a new section at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents, since the old one is archived.
