Administrators' newsletter – October 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

  Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

2 academics

Don't know if you are interested, but while expanding Elena Arizmendi Mejía, I discovered Gabriela Cano Ortega does not have an en.WP article, though she has a Spanish one. I added her to the list of gender studies academics with some of the sources I found. She primarily works on women, but has also written on transgender people. The other one is Carolina Villarroel a professor and archivist who founded the U.S. Latino Digital Humanities Center in Texas. Totally get it if you don't have interest or time, but I know academics are something you like to focus on. SusunW (talk) 20:44, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

@SusunW: I'll take a look! Thanks for bringing them to my attention :) TJMSmith (talk) 03:35, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
@SusunW: I started a quick bio on Gabriela Cano Ortega. I think she meets WP:AUTHOR based on reviews of her works and likely WP:PROF based on the esWiki article that states she is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. I didn't uncover material demonstrating that Villarroel meets notability requirements, but if you found more sources, I'm happy to revisit! TJMSmith (talk) 23:30, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, TJ. No worries. Here's what I find on Villarroel[1][2][3][4][5][6] Admittedly not a lot and she is primarily an archivist. Wonder if Texan Megalibrarygirl might have other info. Or perhaps the way to go is to write about the program she founded? SusunW (talk) 06:17, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi TJ and SusunW! I might be able to find some stuff. I've been offline a lot though because my library is in the middle of a major move and the process is exhausting. When I get home, I'm dead to the world! LOL. But we're finally slowing down and I may have access to resources you might need. Let me know. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Megalibrarygirl. I honestly don't know if the best way is to write about the U.S. Latino Digital Humanities Center (USLDHC) and mention Villaroel or do a stand-alone on her. The fact that she was the head archivist of Hispanic stuff at Houston Library, has been the Brown Foundation Director of Research of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage since 2011, and was the original co-founder of the USLDHC says to me she is notable. The question becomes do we have enough sourcing to meet WP GNG? SusunW (talk) 16:21, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
@SusunW: All I know is that I've used the excellent archives at USLDHC before and it's really nicely done! I think starting with the archives themselves and talking about her in the article is the best way to go at the moment. She's not written up in the Library Journals, which is frustrating. :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:47, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Treacherous (Taylor Swift song)

Hello, I redirected the article because it fails WP:NSONG: "If the only coverage of a song occurs in the context of reviews of the album on which it appears, that material should be contained in the album article and an independent article about the song should not be created." Because "Treacherous" has not received standalone reviews or coverage, and chart positions alone do not guarantee notability, draftifying the article is a preferable alternative. Best, Ippantekina (talk) 00:38, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Joseph Eichberg

The article Joseph Eichberg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Nothing in the article indicates he is any more notable than any other professor.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:52, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Meadow Walker

On 25 November 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Meadow Walker, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Meadow Walker was walked down the aisle by Vin Diesel? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Meadow Walker. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Meadow Walker), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Response to “Welcome!”

Hi, I appreciate the warm welcome to Wikipedia. I read through the NPOV policy before writing my addition to Darryl Pines’ page, and now again after your revision. I do not believe my post can be fairly described as “not conforming” to the NPOV standards. I reviewed major public figures’ wikipedia pages to compare and based mine off of those, and it appeared routine to include contradictory empirical evidence when a false or misleading claim is made. I cited a peer-reviewed academic source. Could you explain why the sentence describing the existing research on prevalence of sexual assault in college Greek life should not be included? It seems to fit the norm of how wikipedia articles are written, and I strongly believe it fits the NPOV standards you sent me.

Thank you, 71.114.93.165 (talk) 00:11, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

@71.114.93.165: I appreciate your research and contributions to Wikipedia! The main policies that come to mind for me are WP:OR and WP:UNDUE. Sources need to be about the main subject of the article, in this case Pines. The sentence about sexual assault and Greek life would be better suited for Fraternities_and_sororities#Sexism_and_sexual_violence. Pines was not mentioned in those sources (as far as I could tell). I hope this helps to clarify my thoughts. TJMSmith (talk) 00:46, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

The Blasting News source on Alexander Tuzhilin was part of an elaborate scheme by another individual to promote himself using Wikipedia. Sources Analysis

In this edit I have analyzed the three sources you cited, in defense of Victory Obasi, in my response to Silver seren, I’m somewhat an expert in Nigerian sources so I do not even blame anyone who gets confused about how Nigerian sources work as most reliable Nigerian sources publish unreliable pieces. Celestina007 (talk) 19:22, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for pinging me. I am no expert on Nigerian sources, so I appreciate you sharing your insights! TJMSmith (talk) 22:54, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
Oh no no, my friend, you aren’t to blame see User:Celestina007#How To Use Sources and scroll to (Come across a Nigerian source) if you read there, you’d see that you aren’t to blame, don’t get me wrong, I’ve lived in Nigeria for 20+ years this is why I’m familiar with Nigerian sources, having said it isn’t peculiar to Nigeria, this is Global, Infact DGG said it best, when he mentioned or opined that there wasn’t/isn’t anything like a (reliable source) we only have reliable pieces from “reliable sources” and this is even more true for my home country. So you see, like I said, you aren’t at fault. Thank you for your time TJ and happy holidays. Celestina007 (talk) 23:32, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Cavalier Johnson edit

You pinged me on this edit and reverted it due to insufficient sourcing. All I did there was take the DOB from the infobox (which was already present) and added it to the article intro line, which is standard format for biographical articles. If the sourcing for the DOB was not solid, it probably shouldn't have been in the infobox. --Asdasdasdff (talk) 18:41, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Agreed. I've removed it from the infobox too. DOB needs a direct source. Thanks! TJMSmith (talk) 18:47, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
