Thank you for communicating with me. My purpose for getting invollved with wikipedia is to disseminate my expertise with Tinnitus. I find the tinnitus article as it is presently to be lacking in a couple of areas and would like to enhance the article [I get emails regularly from people with relatively uncommon tinnitus who "discover" my articles that describes their tinnitus and want more information/help]. If the information were in the wikipedia article, then I think they would not be so delayed in identinfying the kind of tinnitus they have and would get thhe appropriate treatment.. It seems that many doctors who treat tinnitus likewise are deficient in their knowledge about these areas of tinnitus.

So far I have not heard back what I wrote on the TALK page for the tinnitus article. I wonder if you might not help me make some progress.ObbyRAL (talk) 07:19, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

@71.161.205.57: Katrina Ely Tiffany may well have been a suffragette, but is she notable as per Wikipedia:Notability (people)? Notability needs to be established via verification from a reliable source.
If Katrina Ely Tiffany is truly notable, then you might want to write the article first. Please see Wikipedia:Your first article.

Andrée Le Coultre

Thanks for your contributions at Andrée Le Coultre. I know you're itching to get going on this, but this article is only a couple hours old, and as a work of contruction and translation from the French article, it takes some time to complete the translation and verify it, and to assure that the references are correctly rendered and linked to the body. While the {{in use}} template is still up there, that means I'm actively working on constructing the article, and changes by other users risk getting clobbered, so please hold off a bit for a day or two, and then you're more than welcome to attack it with all your might. I've had to undo a few of your changes, but I'll either put them back when I'm done, or let you know when you can have a look, and see if it still makes sense to apply them. Thanks for your interest in Andrée Le Coultre! Cordially, Mathglot (talk) 06:53, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

@Mathglot: I did see the notice, & I was very judicious about my last couple of edits in the External links section. Unless you are editing on the entire article, that should not be a problem. If you are editing the entire article, well no wonder there are conflicts. Please work on individual sections. That will avoid edit conflicts. I do not see any recent edit activity on your part in the External links section except the reversion of my edits. I have taken part in edit-a-thons with half a dozen editors on a single article. We successfully avoided edit conflicts by working on individual sections. Definitely we want the duplicate {{DEFAULTSORT}} removed & the {{Authority control}} put in soon. My citation improvements can always be reinstated later. Peaceray (talk) 07:04, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. I guess the article just isn't ready for prime time yet, and I probably shouldn't be editing in article space when it's in this kind of state. I've removed the article from article space, and will put it back when it's ready to go. That should be in a day or two. Thanks for your help on external links and other things. I reinstated your edits to fix Defaultsort and Authority control. Mathglot (talk) 07:22, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Translation done. However, there's plenty of stuff left to do if you're interested, starting with the first sentence, which lacks a pronunciation guide and vital statistics, through bottom material, which lacks a See also. It's all yours; have at it! Mathglot (talk) 09:50, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Red ensign

Apologies. I had never thought of that. Good to know for the future. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 20:32, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

  • @Acad Ronin: No problem. I stumbled upon that yesterday. I did not expect that syntax with the |Ship flag= parameter. I got to those ship pages via the Special:LintErrors/bogus-image-options page while viewing the (Article) namespace, which was complaining about this syntax:
|Ship country= |Ship flag= [[File:Civil Ensign of the United Kingdom.svg|60px|Red Ensign|United Kingdom]]
that then seemed to work when I changed it to:
|Ship country=United Kingdom |Ship flag= [[File:Civil Ensign of the United Kingdom.svg|60px|Red Ensign]]

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

RF resonant cavity thruster

Hello Peaceray. If you edited on pseudoscientific topics before, you should know that most pseodoscientific topics have at least some strange results published in seamingly legitimate fora. For Homeopathy this includes the infamous study by Jacques Benveniste, which claimed there was water memory. It got published in Nature, but never legitimately reproduced. Your comparison of this NASA study to the Moon Landing is painfully out of proportion. Several other publications point out possible sources of experimental error, including Snopes and Phys.org. These sources also point out that the design has no physically plausible mechanism of action (i.e. would violate the laws of physics if it worked). This is also largely parallell to the state of the art in Homeopathy and related fields. Also similar to Homeopathy, proponents of the theory suggest all kinds of explanations based on principles of nature that the mainstream physics community somehow missed out.

I understand that you hold the opinion you hold in good faith. Use of policy violation templates in a content dispute is generally not a good faith practice however. Heptor (talk) 09:26, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

User:Heptor, I have placed many, many warning edits. I have received feedback on a couple of occasions from editors expressed offense at receiving warning templates. I will note that WP:Don't template the regulars is neither a policy nor a guideline, but an essay. I do place templates cautiously on experienced editors' talk pages, & only when I believe that policy or guidelines have been breached.
RF resonant cavity thruster had over 2,300 edits & a history of thorough discussion, including long discussions on the very perspective that you are trying to champion. I do not know whether it is because of ignorance or willful disregard, but in either case an experienced editor should know better than to change the lead from "a controversial proposed type of" to "fictional" or from "Skeptics have deemed it to be impossible, as it would violate" to "Such drive would violate" when the language in the lead had been so painstakingly arrived at by talk page discussion on that very terminology & by WP:EDITCONSENSUS. Your dismissive attitude was summed up by your edit summary: What's going on here, this is a scientific encyclopedia, not fanfic. Violates laws of nature = fictional. You appear to be in total denial of experimental results that have yet to be disproved or explained, that have been verified by reliable sources. I will begin by pointing you at the Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth essay.
Despite my statements that I am familiar with WP:PSCI, you keep lecturing me about it. OK, my turn. I ask you to review the following: Pseudoskepticism, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Pseudoscience#Final decision, Pseudoskepticism on Rational Wiki, & Shermer, Michael (2015-03-01). "What Can Be Done about Pseudoskepticism?". Scientific American. doi:10.1038/scientificamerican0315-74. {{cite web}}: Missing or empty |url= (help) The progress of science is littered with examples of scientific orthodoxy that blindly dismissed minority scientific beliefs that we now know to be true. Witness the persecution of Galeleo, the early prevalence of the miasma theory over the germ theory of disease, the rejection of the work of Ignaz Semmelweis, the difficulties of John Lykoudis & Barry Marshall in establishing credibility for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease by antibiotics, & Einstein's dismissal of quantum entanglement as "spooky action at a distance". As I have stated on your talk page, "If & when we see an explanation that discounts the EM Drive results, then it will be incumbent on us to state that. But right now we have results and no explanation either way, so it is our obligation to report the results in WP:NPOV."
So back to those templates. In placing the first warning template about adhering to a neutral point of view, {{uw-npov1}}, I wrote Please discuss you proposed changes on the talk page. In my limited experience of 24,000+ edits, this is usually effective way to get an editor to discuss a disputed edit & often leads to an acceptable compromise. However, when I have indicated to an editor that I dispute their edits as WP:POV and I have asked that editor to discuss on the talk page, I will assume that when an editor simply reverts the edit & does not engage in discussion, then that editor is operating in disruptive behavior. I therefore cannot assume good faith in such circumstances.
Peaceray (talk) 06:53, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
What you are describing above is a content dispute. There is an active discussion on the talk page of the article, where it belongs. There is a minority support for calling this design outright pseudoscience, and certainly a lot of support for not implying that it is a working thing in Wikipedia's voice. I understand that you disagree, and I do not question that you disagree in good faith. You should not have resorted to making accusations on my talk page, however. Especially given your experience. By the way, 2,500 edits here, hopefully including some with good quality. Heptor (talk) 13:27, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
With regards to what you wrote in the last sentence, "[...] when an editor simply reverts the edit & does not engage in discussion, then that editor is operating in disruptive behavior." I would like to emphasize that I didn't do any reverts in the article space, and there was a discussion on the talk page by the time you placed the {{Uw-disruptive2}} template on my talk page. I made two separate edits with substantial difference between them. Admittedly the first edit was a bit snarky, but the second one is, I believe, in line with -- I'm sorry to say -- the Wikipedia policy on PSCI, which is a part of NP.
It may be that you interpreted the sequence of events differently, so I will again ask you to please reconsider your accusation that I didn't edit the article in good faith. Heptor (talk) 21:46, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Art+Feminism, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm

For more info see
the meetup page
for Art+Feminism
.
Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.

This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent.

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

When: Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, Washington 98105
Who: Everyone is welcome.
What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

Event coordinator

Hi, the English Wikipedia recently created a new user permission for editors involved in off-wiki outreach work, event coordinator. This new permission allows users to mark accounts for confirmed for up to 10 days, and also allows them to create accounts for events without rate limits without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. I have added the event coordinator permission to your account and removed the account creator permission, as you appear to have been using it mainly for outreach work.

This should have no noticeable impact on your ability to create accounts, and will give you the extra ability to temporarily confirm accounts if you need to. For more in formation, you can see the information page on the right, or you can ask me if you have any questions. TonyBallioni (talk) 19:45, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Black Bear Ranch

Thanks for the comment on my edit to the Black Bear Ranch page. I've restored it. The source cited for the bogus quote is an unreliable one, based on Richard Marley's well-known habit of jocularity, and deserves to be removed from the article. I have a reliable source for the edit I made, which I will cite shortly. There are many other outrageous items in this article, which I plan to correct. Tech News: 2018-30

09:44, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Peaceray,

I hope that this is a proper way of replying to your post on my talk page. If not, please let me know. Thank you for your welcoming pointers and words of encouragement. I noticed that new editors are stimulated to create new pages. That will have to wait in my case. For now, I prefer to perform modest edits in existing pages on commons and xx.wikipedia only, correcting obvious or likely errors as I encounter them, and/or filling in some gaps. I still have a stash of bookmarked pages that I had no time for in the past.

Using your pointers, I have already looked around a bit, and I must say I'm somewhat taken aback with the complexity of the "organization subtree" of wikipedia.org. But I'll stroll around some more before bothering you or other more experienced editors with questions.

Oh yes. One thing. I see the point in having edit summaries on "normal" pages, and understand why there is none here. There is such a field on RFC discussion pages, but I'll regard that as a just-in-case-you-feel-the-urge feature (unless the comment was very long).

Thank you for reading this, and Peace, man ;-) Obbart (talk) 13:38, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

<EDITED: Warning withheld. Did not AGF.> TallGuysFree (talk) 06:11, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

@TallGuysFree: One reversion does not make an edit war, particularly when it was in response to an inaccurate edit summary (namely that the material in question was "a discussion forum" when it was not). I mentioned my valid objection in the edit summary.
You are a relative neophyte (please compare your edit tally to mine), so you may be unfamiliar with some of the tools, templates, & etiquette on Wikipedia. A better choice instead of removing the reference might have been to place the {{Better source}} template. Also, it is best to initiate a discussion on the article talk page & invite any editor with whom you have a potential conflict to that discussion. Since your have not done this, your placing the {{uw-ew}} is a pretty serious breach of the assume good faith behavioral guideline. Your mis-characterization of thetallestman.com as a discussion site, your ommission in signing your post at Talk:Robert Wadlow, & your failure to assume good faith each could warrant a warning message. Rather than do that, I would instead invite you to withdrawal your warning to me by deleting this entire section & then to use one of the talkback templates to invite me to the discussion on the Talk:Robert Wadlow page.
Peaceray (talk) 16:41, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
I made a mistake and I'm not going to hide any evidence that I made a mistake. I am sorry for coming across as rude, and I'm not sure why you didn't warn me. Go ahead and call me names like neophyte, brag about your contribution count. You're right in saying that I didn't assume good faith, I apologize. I am also guilty of failing to sign my post (which, for whatever reason, in 2018, isn't automatic...). I'm certain you can agree that editing on wikipedia is not an easy task. I tried. Editing

Hello Peaceray,

Hope you are doing well and thank you for your insight into editing on Wikipedia.

I look to people like you to become a better writer myself (and stay out of trouble). If there are any resources you might recommend to make me a better writer, please do let me know.

I also think it's really cool how you have traveled across the country at various Wikipedia functions as well, it's awesome when people are able to spread knowledge and bring insights wherever they go.

Sincerely, Wisc. Wiscipidier (talk) 00:06, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Billy Strahorn

Every week a new Cleanup Listing comes out for Wikiproject Jazz. There's always a new list of dead links. What do you suggest I do if these links? Second, although I know the policy, I thought I had made clear in my edit summary that it's better to avoid making things difficult for the reader. If possible, and it usually is, people ought to find sources other than pay sources, otherwise a footnote really serves no purpose because it can't be checked by the reader. Keep in mind the reader. Keep in mind the audience. Who are we working for? Them. The purpose of a footnote is so people can check sources themselves. Pay sources prohibit that. Not everyone can afford pay sources. So, on this point, too, I ask: What do you suggest I do with that? You care a lot about this article. That's good. Would you be willing to work on it to get rid of the problems? Thanks.Vmavanti (talk) 02:43, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

@Vmavanti: Wow, there is a lot in those statements that I feel is at odds with the Wikimedia statement of purpose: "The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally".
  • Again, the WP:SOURCEACCESS portion of the verifiability policy states: "Some reliable sources may not be easily accessible. For example, an online source may require payment, and a print-only source may be available only in university libraries. Rare historical sources may even be available only in special museum collections and archives. Do not reject reliable sources just because they are difficult or costly to access. If you have trouble accessing a source, others may be able to do so on your behalf." The important thing here is that somebody needs to be able to verify it, *not* everyone.
  • If we eliminated all sources that "can't be checked by the reader", that would also mean eliminating print-only sources. What is wrong with citing a book of which there are only six copies in the US. Yes, I have encountered this very situation.
  • Verifying statements when the only reliable source(s) are behind paywalls represents nothing less that the liberation of that information. Unverified statements can be removed at anytime. When the only citation available is behind a paywall, to not use it to verify has the potential to seriously diminish Wikipedia & deny the free flow of information to the reader. The presence in Wikipedia may represent the only availability of that information outside of closed access sources.
  • "Not everyone can afford pay sources" is a true statement. But there are alternatives. For some, a trip to a library or a university that does have access to paywalled sources is an option. For those who cannot access that way, WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request is an option.
  • When there is an open/free source available, I wholeheartedly advocate using that. I am in alignment with The Wikipedia Library Strives for Open Access, but not to the exclusion of paywall or print-only sources when nothing else is available.
You asked "What do you suggest I do?"
  • First, I would suggest you do due diligence. In the case of the Billy Strahorn article, you removed a dead link that I later restored then resolved. I went to that web site, found it had a search function, so I searched for Billy Strahorn, found an article, grabbed the DOI, put it into Citer. Simple & easy! I did add {{Closed access}} after the ref tag & before the citation template & also the |subscription=y parameter. If a site for a dead link has no search function, then you can plop the search name & the Google search parameter site: into Google. For example: paywall site:wikimedia.org.
  • Second, leave dead links be! There is likely at some point some SME who will eventually come along & solve the problem. It might be messy, look unfinished, & take a long time, but hey, the Wikipedia globe logo is unfinished for a reason. The work of building an encyclopedia is never done.
You asked "Would you be willing to work on it to get rid of the problems?" Um, for what reason do you think I am here? After welcoming users, reverting vandalism, & warning vandals, you will find that my next priority is improving citations, whether that is changing bare URLs into citation templates, adding OCLC numbers to books, resolving dead links, or using Harvard referencing & shortened footnotes, & et cetera. I am a former part-time university reference librarian, after all.

Thanks for thanking me. Nice to be appreciated. I'll just mention here that I'm glad that article came to my attention. Frankly, though the general coverage of Strayhorn seems basically accurate, the underpinnings are a mess. So, as I said, I will try to clean this up as I get the chance. Yemen

Could I get you to join the chat about the student essay that was added to the article yesterday that is horribly sourced and clearly way too much for this country article. Normally I would just make a new article with these additions but I can't cuz it's so horribly sourced. Last thing we need is experience editors not knowing what's going on.--Moxy (talk) 00:21, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

@Moxy: I do a lot of vandalism patrol, & I have knee-jerk reactions when there is a paucity of information in the edit summary, someone is removing sourced material, & that editor has already been reverted. I would say that my vandalism reversion rate is probably correct 99%, but there is that one percent when I do get it wrong. My apologies for not getting it right this time, but please understand that edit summaries like "not like that" & "not ready" do not convey any useful information. I was not even able to discern your meaning from "Again removed horribly Source underweight for this article. Please bring us those hot page if you wish to restore unsighted material". Yes, I do get it wrong some of the time, & I am going to continue to err on the side of the occasional false positive in favor of reverting vandalism quickly.
