List of female architects

Hello again Sarah. I see your women's initiative is beginning to bear fruit, both with new articles and of course this list, including all your own additions. Maybe it would be useful for you to look at the discussions on the list's talk page as well as those on the talk page of WP Architecture. As you will see, despite my own initial suggestions, there now seems to be an understanding that red links should be avoided as far as possible. Short stubs should be added instead. The problem is that the purpose of a list is to inform readers rather than to assist developers. While you provide a book as a reference for your additions, it is not going to be an easy job to write bios just on this basis. A further suggestion was that red links could be added, for example to Wikipedia:WikiProject Architecture/List of female architects as a basis for future development. Sorry! I guess since I've made so many darn lists in my Wiki-life that I've found red links are as empowering as stubs. But hey, what do I know :) I'm done adding additions, I did quite a bit of research into it. I even added a few newly translated articles. Ah well, I understand if my work is reverted. Great job adding all those names and thanks for adding those sources!! My understanding of redlinks is that they can be used where there is a reasonable chance of creating a meaningful article. I imagine all of the people you've added will be verfiable and notable enough for the list, but whether they should be redlinked is a different question. If I were you I'd not remove anyone from the list until we've come to a concensus about what we're doing. Sionk (talk) 17:29, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Ya'll might notice I've started to create some stubs (some are better than others!) about some of the red links. Oh, Wikipedia how you work wonders for my OCD ;) I've also removed a few that I failed to find decent sources for. Ok..real work to now. Yes, you've certainly been making progress in the right direction. Good work! Overall, the list is now more blue than red. Now I've added some of the more important Danes, I'll have a look at some of the red links. It would be great if we could compile a good, world-wide list before the end of March. GLAM/Delaware Art Museum

Please take a look at User talk:Dthomsen8/Draft articles/DMA as a second draft, with help from Smallbones (talk of redoing Delaware Art Museum#Collections. I have dropped some of the links in the original in redoing the whole section, and I am unsure if I am consistent in adding subsection and sub-subsection headings, but overall I think this is much better visually. Hello Sarah, I noted with interest your comment about WikiWomen's History Month at the tipline; I'd be very interested in focusing coverage on this issue. It would be great to have an opinion essay on the topic in the first issue of the month, especially since the issue of women and Wikipedia has dropped off the community's radar somewhat in recent months. Hi, regarding the Women project, I made a proposal to a museum director about doing an Edit-a-thon about the Catalan surrealist painter Àngels Santos Torroella ca: Àngels Santos Torroella, she is 100 year old, but still alive and kicking, so I want to support her centenary improving her bio. The Museum director (also a woman) who helds several of her artworks is considering the idea, and I'm suposed to be contacted with a yes/no during the next week. Adding categories versus lists

Hi Genevieve. Thanks for contributing to the List of lists of women. However, I had to remove all of the categories you added, as they are not lists. You can learn more about the differences here: Wikipedia:Categories,_lists,_and_navigation_templates. Perhaps creating some cited lists with information about the subjects you added would be a good idea? As I know we could use more related to those subjects! Thanks! Women and all that

First of all, thanks very much for remembering me on Valentine's day. All the very best to you too. You certainly deserve it. But what I'm really writing about is how you think we should go forward on improving the coverage of women. Writing biographies in connection with the List of female architects has convinced me that some of those pioneering and/or influential ladies should be included in other articles. I'm not too sure whether to start with an article on Women architects (covering especially those who also should as mid or high in WikiProject Women's History) along the lines of Women artists or to take a country by country approach. We also need to do something about Women sculptors based on the List of female sculptors. It might also be useful to add summary details to the names on the lists so that people can get a better overview of the coverage. Most of the names currently listed can mean very little to people living outside a given country. In any case, I think we need to do more so that enterprising people such as the Estonian Valve Pormeister (I've just been writing about her) get more than just a couple of dozen hits even for a new article. Hi! I'd just do something as simple as "Women in Dubai" as an article perhaps or think about a series of biographies about women in Dubai's history that need articles or article expansions. I'm unfortunately not as aware of Dubai women's history as I am other histories...perhaps there is a book or a university library that might be able to lend in support too? Hello, wanted to clarify a revert.

Regarding [this edit] of mine, I reverted it assuming good faith. I almost always add an explanation to my reverts but in this case I was unsure if this was vandalism or an error. Possibly neither, so I left it blank figuring it was self-explanatory. SusanBrownmiller (talk) is not a registered user, added to the project by an IP address stating they were adding themselves. Susan Brownmiller is also the name of an author of mild controversy, but not a factor in my decision to revert. It was a factor in my indecisiveness about explaining my edit as reverting vandalism. No problem, thanks for coming by. I know Brownmiller, I actually recently wrote an article about a book of hers and she's started to contribute to Wikipedia because of it. I like to AGF also, so I'm doing that with Brownmiller :) Let's just see what happens, and for me - unless the user is banned, I generally don't remove them from the participants list. Perhaps she will start editing (I'll be inviting her to a new user project I'm working on next week)..so fingers crossed, and let's just wait it out (IMHo!). Thought I should let you know I added a snippet on WP Architecture in response to the question on other projects. I've been so busy with work that I haven't really had time to follow what is going on with WWHM, my ability to focus on things goes back and forth with two jobs and a full time master's degree I'm working on. Regardless, I don't know anyone directly writing a women architects article or anything related, there might be something on the talk page for WWHM but I can't remember if anyone has started any similar projects. Kadari and I have written Women in Chile but that really isn't similar. I believe the history of women is very important and that the article exists, just like I believe that articles about the history of women in any major subject should be covered. Recent email I received from OTRS

Anyway, Sarah. I got in touch with Warner Bros. plus Ms. Julie Heath and found out that this project was going to be a great expense. I can't get the copyright license for this photo. Maybe in three years, I will be able to afford one of Warner Bros.' expensive publicity stills for Anne Triola, but not right now.

Y'all can delete the "File:Anne Triola & John Wayne photo.jpg" as I can't fund an expensive fee for the copyright licensing on the picture. That's why I went to less expensive methods as a backup plan to help my Anne Triola Wikipedia biography for the time being. This economy just will not help me out at this time. Hi again, Sarah. I saw that the administrator made his move to edit my Anne triola & John Wayne photo.jpg by dropping the license permission attempt tag. You know, I was pursuing getting that photo eligible for Wikipedia use via a PD US non renewed tag. They now have it tagged that way. They can keep it up that way if they choose to. I am totally OK with that. According to Ms. Julie Heath, Warner Bros. has actually lost that publicity still, and in my own mind - I think we are almost justified either way to keep or delete this photograph. I mean, Ms. Heath showed me three replacement stills for the John Wayne/Anne Triola photograph - and topping that off with the fact that RKO Studios Inc. became defunct in 1959, it almost begs for the case of "PD US non renewed." OTRS and non-free use

I notice that you added an OTRS permission tag together with a non-free use tag at File:Arnold Leibovit.jpg. It seems peculiar to me to combine OTRS permission with the non-permission of non-free use. I looked but couldn’t find evidence that you are an OTRS volunteer. Can you point me to evidence and explain how OTRS combines with non-free use? —teb728 t c 03:01, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

I've been doing OTRS for almost 9 months now. I have been under the understanding that it's acceptable to have permissions for files even if they are non-free. It happens fairly often, and no one has ever asked me about it until now, actually. It actually makes sense to me - that someone would provide permission to use a copyrighted image, like a company or organization. Better to seek permission to use a copyrighted image than not :) SarahStierch (talk) 03:08, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Actually, documenting the permission is OK, but the OTRS ticket tag then needs to say the specific kind of permission which was granted by the copyright holder. Otherwise it's misleading. If they didn't specify a compatible license, then the permission letter is invalid for keeping the image. See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. The most usual compatible free license is CC-by-SA. Permission for use on Wkipedia only (or only for non-commercial purposes) is incompatible with our licensing and still makes the image non-free. As it is an image of a living person and therefore replaceable, it does not count as a valid fair use and will almost certainly be deleted. Voceditenore (talk) 11:02, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

The issue of copyright has already been decided by administrator User:Future Perfect at Sunrise. Please refer to history page of the file and read the comment by the adm saying "self-rv, has a cc-by claim on source website". This image has been released by the owner under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 UK: England & Wales (CC BY 2.0) Licence, which is also clearly mentioned in the source website, as noted by the adminstrator . The user who uploaded those images adamantly repeated in her OTRS emails (about 10 of them) that she did not want the images migrated to Commons. WP:TEAHOUSE

Sarah -

The idea of a controlled environment for responding to editor questions is, well, a bit orthogonal to Wikipedia traditions. But another tradition is to try different things, so I don't have any personal objection to the design of the Teahouse. May I be so bold as to point out, however, that an experienced editor coming to Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions sees absolutely nothing on that page that indicates that hosts, and not others, should be the ones answering questions? -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:15, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, like the online ambassadors, it's a somewhat controlled environment. We do have a method to the madness (which has been discussed extensively on meta) since this is a pilot, and if it succeeds it'll probably evolve based on community input, and if it fails (and it could) it'll be canned or morphed into something else (who knows, as I hope it succeeds :) ). So it's got a pretty specific set of goals right now to judge those things, and the fact that experienced editor's want to join in on the fun is one of those factors, and gets added to my observations sheet. Excellent point about a "disclaimer" of sorts. There is a call for action to meet hosts, and a pretty big stress on that there are hosts on WP:Teahouse main page, etc. But, your point is actually something that popped into my head when folks started participating who aren't hosts or new editors. It is also something the Teahouse team is discussing right now. I figure reaching out and individually touching base with folks is the best thing right now, until we can figure out how to express it on the Q&A board. Just a note to say it seems I made the same mistake when I wandered in there yesterday, saw a question and answered it. I agree with John that it might be a good idea to point out to visitors that only "hosts" should be answering questions, since nowhere else on Wikipedia works this way. That was actually tricky. You don't want to change the color on the AAA box, so I made you a new template {{Divbox/style/sia}} and changed the background color parameter. I think that Category:Smithsonian Institution Archives related should collect talk pages (and consequently be a non-hidden category), because WP:PROJCATS indicates that is the suggested policy. Disavian (talk) 16:17, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

The First Lady of Malacology

Oh how fabulous! A million thanks, Sarah! It's a very good article too. How did you do that so fast??? Myra Keen was really a great pioneer in her field, so she certainly deserves her own article. I have her big book on the Panamanian fauna in 2 editions. You are very kind, and I am very impressed!

Matthew Roth told me about the Teahouse when I talked to him on Sunday; I had not head about it before. Then there was an article and a link in the Signpost, so I went over there to take a look. It is very pretty to look at, and it seems as if it will really work to help out new people and make them feel welcome. Of course it it essential that it is staffed by people like you, who are warm and enthusiastic and will take the time to do the right thing! Yes! Wow, thanks Invertzoo, and thank you for improving the article. I never knew what a malacologist was until yesterday :) I do work pretty speedy...just give me the right tools. But I am a trained researcher, so perhaps that explains it. (Working under pressure for art exhibitions, and sudden changes, etc.) Fingers crossed on the Teahouse, we've had a good and bumpy first week, and this is the second week and we're still trying to figure a few things out, but, the new editors have had nothing but good things to say - and that is what matters. Hi Sarah! I too am most pleased and impressed by your work on the Myra Keen article. Her second edition of "Sea Shells of Tropical West America" is the proverbial bible for west coast sea shells, and she is undoubtably one of my heros, together with her mentor Ida Oldroyd - an honorary Professor at Stanford and a fascinating woman in her own right (and deserving of an article). Hi Sarah! I actually have several specimens of the shell itself, Favartia keenae (Vokes, 1970), so I will photograph it and upload the macro image onto the species article. I noticed that you did links to your Myra Keen article off of several species articles I had written, citing Keen's treatise. That's how I found you, together with your association with my friend and mentor Invertzoo. By the way, I have a complete original set (4 volumes) of Ida Oldroyd's works from Stanford University Press starting in 1927, Marine Shells of the West Coast of North America. Yeah, I checked the most recent few without checking the first few. I was wondering how you'd made it so far without anyone noticing. It looks like it's only messed up on five or so pages. Weird line breaks or something. I'll leave it to you to fix up (I did kill one double-post, though).

And please go back and sign the messages that are currently unsigned (e.g., User talk:Newyorkbrad). Attribution is important and all, but even more importantly, a lack of a timestamp often screws up archive bots.
