Metroid Prime: Trilogy Featured topic
editI am messaging to get your opinion on the possible creation of a Featured topic which consists of Metroid Prime: Trilogy, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, as you have participated in the editing of one or more of these articles. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! - Sorry about the late review. Everything is fine except for prose - I'd suggest getting a third set of hands to work on the prose and either the removal of the third image or the strengthening of its rationale. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! - Sorry that I've been dragging my heels; I'm just feeling a tinch lazy lately. I'll look over the prose tonight or tomorrow and pass it if it turns out. editJust a friendly reminder that I am reviewing one of your articles. Another user has stepped in to address a few minor issues, but there remains a couple more that need to be fixed. You can find the review at Talk:The 23rd Psalm/GA1. Thanks, Ruby2010 comment! 17:12, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I am beginning my attempt to promote all of Lost's third season to a Good Topic. As you've already promoted several Lost episode articles to GA status, would you be interested in moving on to the third season and expanding a few of its episodes? I made a template, User:Ruby2010/Other interests#Lost season 3, that lists what articles need some TLC (14 or so in all). If you're so inclined, feel free to pick whichever episodes interest you the most. Thanks, Ruby2010 comment! 20:14, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Re: Lost Season 3 GA
editJust looking through Exposé, I'd have to say the reception section can be expanded (more US ratings data is needed, as well as international broadcast information). Also, I bet more can be pulled from the audio commentary to expand the production section (I haven't listened to this yet, so I'm not completely sure if there is more notable content that could be added). Was the episode nominated for any awards? (I'm sure some people had to have liked it). ;)
The Constant is a better-written article (and it has a well developed production and reception section). To be safe, it should probably undergo a copyedit before a FA nom (or else it might get ripped apart). Also, you might want to contact the past main editors of the article and let them know your FA plans. They might have some good suggestions. Lastly, ensure there are no deadlinks (as the article was largely written a few years ago). Hope all this helps! :) I think promoting to FA is an excellent ambition, so please let me know if you need any help. Ruby2010 comment! 16:35, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- That's great! I've been sort of taking a break from episode articles (Fringe has worn me out but its second season is almost a GT!), but will soon jump back into the fray of Lost's third season. Again, nice work! :) Ruby2010 comment! 14:15, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Nintendo task force membership update
editHello,
It's that time again to update membership status with the Nintendo task force, which we try to do periodically to keep our membership up-to-date.
All participants have been placed on an "Inactive participants" list. To confirm that you're still a member of the Nintendo task force, simply go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Nintendo#Members and move your name from the "Inactive participants" list to the bottom of the "Active participants" list. If you are no longer an active member in the task force, you may simply remove your name altogether. After 1 month, on 1 August 2011, all entries under the "Inactive participants" list will be removed. Hopefully you can stay with us and continue to work on Nintendo-related articles. Templates etc
editHi Igor, I've just updated my page with a table that is based on the same template as the Bond FIlms project one. This is for the Fleming novels, which I want to work on at some point in the future. I don't know the best place to save this as a template, which can then be placed on the Project page. Could you let me know the best way to do this? Cheers. - SchroCat (^ • @) 10:34, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there, I went with the option of the new template at Wikipedia:WikiProject James Bond/Novels/Template as the film progress is still incomplete and I think to go for topic status will take some time. Although the articles we've done are great and at a good standard, there are a lot that are not, as well as a number having a very different format - something TonyTheTiger specifically highlighted for us to address if we went down the GT route. I think there will probably be issues with James Bond (film series) as well - too many people desperately trying to update Bond 23 with every piece of gossip going, which will cause issues, but we shall see. I've also updated the Project page with the new template and raised both templates up the page to a more significant position. Cheers - SchroCat (^ • @) 18:32, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- BTW - No, the edit you saw was a mistake - I've not edited Bonds before under any name - Cheers! - SchroCat (^ • @) 18:33, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Just one more thing... You thought about putting James Bond (film series) through a peer review for comments? It'd be a great way of getting a nice broad and independent critique of the the article. - SchroCat (^ • @) 18:37, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I've reviewed it here. Take a look when you're ready, thanks, Aranea Mortem (talk to me) 13:28, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

- I have removed the Cliff Williams from the WikiProject Biography assessment requests list because that article has already been assessed as B-class, the highest assessment possible for requests submitted at that list. I would have told you to submit it to good article nominations if another Wikipedian had not already done that. --TommyBoy (talk) 08:12, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding, I did not realize you had submitted the nomination otherwise I would not have said anything. I will keep an eye on the article and if I see anything about it that needs improvement, I will be more than happy to assist. --TommyBoy (talk) 13:50, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks again for all your hard work on Never Say Never Again to get it over the line for GA status! As always it's been great working with you again. I'm going to see what I can do for Casino Royale (Climax!), but I'm not sure there is enough information out there to get it to GA status, but I think we have to try!
I've not forgotten James Bond (film series) either, but I'm utterly tied up next week and won't be able to edit anything new - I'm in tidying up mode for a fortnight or so. SchroCat (^ • @) 15:35, 21 September 2011 (UTC) |
Can you make a case that this doesn't duplicate James Bond (film series)? Thanks. Lagrange613 (talk) 01:48, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, We're in the midst of a big change on the James Bond (film series) page at the moment - it's way too big and bloated and we're breaking it out into (probably) three pages worth of material, one of which is the list. It may not appear as if there is enough justification, but this is very much a work in progress and yes, we are aiming for no duplication at the end of the process. Cheers - SchroCat (^ • @) 09:27, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- Igordebraga mentioned that on my talk page. I guess I somehow missed the discussion of the refactoring when I was reading the relevant articles' talks. It's a worthy goal and it looks like it's well in hand. Lagrange613 (talk) 16:16, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Responded to your request to reassess Donkey Kong Country Returns. I've assessed the article as B-class. You asked for suggestions for improvement, and the only thing I could see was that the references need work. There's a lot of bare URLs that need to be fixed - you can use {{Cite web}}, or just present the necessary information in plain text, but just bare URLs should be avoided as they can lead to link rot. Aside from that, the article looks like it could be brought to WP:GAN quite shortly. GRAPPLE X 21:13, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Film template
editNot sure about putting CR back in the template as it's not a film, just a live TV drama. Should we take it out and only return it if pushed hard later? It's not covered properly by the film pages because of its TV status, which is the right approach, really. - SchroCat (^ • @) 09:55, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Table
editI saw you got the table sorted then changed it back again: did it not work properly or something? I thought it was OK! - SchroCat (^ • @) 19:08, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- I think that at some point we may have to drop the image in order to get pass whaty I consider to be the rather restrictive view of some of the reviewers regarding the image. I don't think it would matter what we put in the FUR, there would still be people up in arms about it! As for other images, I think most of the free ones we could use (images of the Bond actors etc) are not good enough to convey an imperssion of the overall series as they are images of the actors, rather than them in the character of Bond. Overall, and regrettably, I think we may have to drop the image to get through the FL process. The table looks OK now and I think we're OK on the access points - I saw you changed the sorting issue. Are we OK on the row and col scopes now too? - SchroCat (^ • @) 15:28, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Your GA Nomination for 3 (The X-Files)
editHi Igor, I've reviewed your nomination of "3" and have put it on hold pending completeness, reliability of sources, and language. Please see the nomination page. The nomination will stay on hold for one week; if issues have not been addressed or worked towards in that time, it will be failed. Thank you. Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:37, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, didn`t saw it.
The article is REALLY good, sample, personnel section properly separated, pictures, categories; the only thing that i can find that could get better is the lead section, it lacks references, there are quite some important statements in there that require references, besides the second paragraph while a proper overview of the reception of the album, as such, reference it too. Is the only thing, is really good. Zidane tribal (talk) 03:38, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
Good Topic question
editHi Igor, I've got a question about Good Topics. I'd like to get the Fleming Bond books through as a good topic (only one left to go through the process at the moment). I've got two questions, which I hope you can help me on:
- Is it a viable topic, or would people insist on having all the continuation Bond books included in the scope of the topic.
- What would make a good Overview article? A number of the potential ones (such as James Bond novels) include Fleming plus continuation novels and I don't think I want to go down the route of getting the additional 28 articles through the GA procedure just to get the topic closed off! I've got James Bond (character) in there at the moment, which could be OK.
Any thoughts you had would be good to hear! Cheers - SchroCat (^ • @) 13:14, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for that - I'll drop Fleming in the top and argue the toss with people later! - Cheers - SchroCat (^ • @) 14:47, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup
editHello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.
This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for your note--I'll look over the Jaws article as I'm able--good luck on the FA! Blake Burba (talk) 03:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi there, I've had a play round with the dates on the footnotes and I think they're all in the same format now. I re-jigged the biblio slightly too, adding in a few bits of missing info that someone always asks for (location, isbns, linking the publishers etc) Good luck! - SchroCat (^ • @) 05:31, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Foos albums
editHey, I'll take a look at One by One later this week, then maybe Wasting Light. Given the upcoming Wiki blackout, you might have to remind me in a few days if I don't get back to you or start editing the article. WesleyDodds (talk) 08:30, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Alright I should be able to start looking over this soon. Main thing I must ask about: I only see one of the books about Dave Grohl cited. Do you have access to the others? WesleyDodds (talk) 10:31, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok, here's some stuff to that needs to be taken care of in the One by One article:
- Some of your citations need to be cleaned up so they are consistent. For instance, I see retrieval dates formatted as both "2004-05-03" and "1 May 2011". The former appears to be the predominant style for dates.
- You don't need to include page numbers for magazine or newspaper article citations, but you do for books, so The Dave Grohl Story needs to indicate which pages you are citing.
- Your best bet is to pull mainly from full-length books about Dave Grohl and/or the Foos, and then fill in the details with individual web pages and magazine articles. Think of it this way: the author of a biography has done tons of research that should be properly attributed in his own text. They've done the hard work for you, so most everything worth talking about (assuming the book is well-written) should be covered in there.
- I wouldn't recommend citing a retail outlet like Amazon for factual information; they're not a news outlet. Find alternate sources for the same info.
- Cut down on reliance on Back and Forth as much as possible, as it's a band-sanctioned documentary and could be considered a primary source.
- You shouldn't have to cite the album liner notes, as you would be describing information that is plainly evident in the actual subject of the article.
- "By December 2001, they were recording at singer Dave Grohl's own Studio 606 in Alexandria, Virginia, and later moved to Los Angeles, where they worked in both Conway Studios and The Hook Studios.[3][4][5][6]" That's an awful lot of cites there. Do you need all of them to verify this sentence? if not, remove the redundant ones.
- Factually, the article looks pretty solid. I especially like the Composition section, as it's a common misstep for editors to just pull descriptive lines from reviews (which are essentially opinion pieces, and thus should only be used as references in a Reception section) instead of digging up nuts-'n-bolts factual information about how the music was put together and how it functions. I commend that.
- Review templates are optional and I tend to exclude them from articles I work on, but that's your choice if you want to use it or not here. I will say that if you happen to find a source that summarizes critical consensus ("The album was warmly received by critics" is the sort of sentence that a well-research biography can justifiably use) and then cite it in the article, then a large part of the incentive for using the reviews template in the first place is eliminated. WesleyDodds (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'm surprised there's no mention of the singles released from the album in the Release and Reception section. You don't need much, but they should be acknowledged, since they were spun off from the album.
- I don't see a particular reason to describe the contents of the bonus DVD in the tracklist section.
- Once you are further along, the album will require a copyedit to remove some cluttered sentences and awkward phrases. I can provide that once you are ready and fully done sourcing. Just contact me!
Hopefully that should give you a clear direction of what to do at the moment. If you have any questions or need further advice regarding this page, feel free to ask. Good luck! WesleyDodds (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Jaws
editIt doesn't look like I'd be asking for anything else--certainly nothing major. I'm a little surprised it was archived today, but that's OK. I'll finish my copyedit in the next two or three days. I should think it will be promoted with little problem on its next nomination. It's in excellent shape. Great research job. DocKino (talk) 21:27, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Here's one relatively small thing: Jaws, I believe, was rereleased theatrically in 1979. The article should have a little on that, either in "Theatrical run" or "Box office performance" (or both)--wherever what you come up with fits best. DocKino (talk) 22:39, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
The second paragraph under "Theatrical run" doesn't really seem to belong there, but rather in "Legacy"--joining the material in the first paragraph there. (It describes the long-term effects of the success of its release, rather than the release itself, which is covered above.) Do you agree? DocKino (talk) 23:44, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
What I have left to go over is "Theatrical run" and the first part of "Legacy" (I've been through the "Legacy" subsections and they're in great shape). I don't have time right at the moment, but I'll aim to be done by Monday evening. DocKino (talk) 04:23, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Black Ice
editThanks for the offer, I'm willing to have a go at Black Ice. While preparing for FA, it would be a good idea to put the article before the Guild of Copy Editors then sending it to a Peer Review. Both of these enable other eyes to pick up problems that you or I have missed. Both of these procedures, however, are time consuming and it may be more than two months before the article is through. In any case, I've started a section on the talkpage to address specific concerns in the interim.shaidar cuebiyar (talk)

WikiCup 2012 January newsletter
editWikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
- 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
- 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
- Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
- Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
- Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.
A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
