DYK for Remy Siemsen

On 5 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Remy Siemsen, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that at age 16, Remy Siemsen was the top goalscorer for Sydney FC in the 2016–17 W-League season? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Remy Siemsen. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Remy Siemsen), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Two articles on the same player

We have a problem in that there are two articles on the same Mexican female soccer player: Norma Duarte Palafox, and Norma Duerte Palafox. Duarte is the correct last name of the player using Spanish naming conventions -- but Norma and the Mexican press seem to prefer Palafox. Thus, the article could be retitled Norma Palafox. However, as you created one of the articles it's up to you what we do. Smallchief (talk)

Smallchief I will nominate Norma Duerte for speedy deletion as the duplicate. I migrated any additional content to Norma Duarte. I didn't create either article - but it's a quick fix to change the article name, if need be. Hmlarson (talk) 20:59, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

WP:FOOTY

I would have thought a scottish premier league top scorer for her club 3 years in a row and i'm pretty sure top 5 in the league for the last three years would achieve notability. Does this mean a multitude of premier league women players could be wiped off wikipedia - an informative platform so many young girls look at for information? Any advice on this? -- Nicole Pullar ... [[1]] GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 05:28, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi GlasgowBraveheart - The key is including reliable secondary resources per WP:GNG. WP:GNG takes precedence over FOOTY. You can check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force#Notability criteria for more info on other notability guidelines. If you have some players in mind you want to work on that have good media coverage, I'd be happy to do a double-check on the references you find to confirm the article likely meets WP:GNG or help look for some refs. You might also consider setting up Google News alerts if you want to be notified of new articles that might be of use for a Wikipedia article. The reference needs to be more than an a match report where the player is briefly mentioned.
The "fully professional" criteria has been debated a number of times over the last several years and many editors have agreed with you despite various methods being used to prevent any changes from happening. I use WP:GNG instead for the most part. Hmlarson (talk) 05:45, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I thought WP:GNG was obvious in this case. I'm going to leave it up to the community to deal with this as I don't want to upset the editor but I created this article to help the encyclopedia. It seems strange to me that the editor has nominated it as I think it's obvious the player is notable enough to have a page. GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 05:55, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
GlasgowBraveheart What a weird revert on Pullar's article - that's not what Ortizesp should do when the notice is removed. However, I would recommend you copy the wiki code and make a draft in your userspace (Help:Userspace draft), request userfication, or save a copy offline and improve the references to meet WP:GNG (just my personal assessment based on several years of this - you are free to do whatever you choose).
The Falkirk Herald ref link is broken and the Tartan Kicks appears to be a blog rather than secondary reliable source. WP:RELIABLE provides more info. If you want to continue with the WP:AFD process for other editors' input, you can remove the notice again and it will likely move to AFD by either Ortizesp or another editor keen on nominating articles for deletion (see also Deletionism and inclusionism in Wikipedia). Proposed deletion of article on Tania Morales

The deletionists are proposing to delete the article on Tania Morales -- basically because they don't believe the sources, which include the official reports of the US women's national soccer team. If you feel like weighing in, this is an article about a player who is, in my opinion, 100 percent notable. Smallchief (talk) 16:25, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Never mind. Issue resolved in favor of keeping Morales. Smallchief (talk) 17:08, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Hmlarson/Archive, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Help on uploading an image

I am looking to upload the wikicommons image File:Scotland centre location map.svg to {{[2]}} in place of the current swpl2 map of locations (so the locations are clearer). However, I cannot get it to show up. It gives the message it can't find the location of the image. Any ideas? It's my first venture into this territory :) GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 16:47, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Bobo.03 - are you using keywords to configure this? Hmlarson (talk) 21:34, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
It's based on the edits editors made. I used the Wikipedia API to fetch the most 500 recent edits. What do you think? Bobo.03 (talk) 21:58, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
Bobo.03 can you clarify what specific criteria you are using to find these editors? I'd like to see if it can be refined further.Hmlarson (talk) 19:18, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
Absolutely. Here is the meta writeup for our study. You may find more detail. Please let me know what you think. Also, I've fixed a bug after sending these recommendations to you - some editors on the list are not active enough. I will update the list shortly. Sorry about that. Recommending new editors to WikiProject Women's sport

Hi Hmlarson,

Here is a new list of recommendations for project Women's sport. Sorry that I introduced some bugs in the previous version as I mentioned, but everything has been fixed. I might be sending one or two more new lists to you in the coming Mondays, and hope you'll find great new members! Also, I am afraid that we did not update any public writeup for our project since then. The high level description in the algorithm section is valid.

Bobo.03 - I've submitted the surveys for this updated list. The People and Society seems the weakest to me. What are the options to fine-tune that? Hmlarson (talk) 22:08, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your effort! People and Society are the categories that can describe the project well, and that the editor most edited under. It's the topic match basically. That's a good point. Right now, the current setup does not yet provide a tuning option, but we have taken this into consideration - to make the recommendation algorithms transparent and tunable. I'd be happy to chat more about it and hear your suggestion if you are interested! Bobo.03 (talk) 01:25, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Can you change it to Category:Women and Category:Sports Bobo.03? Hmlarson (talk) 01:32, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
That's probably hard.. These are the top level categories we are using to capture the topics. It's an approximation. The categories you mentioned definitely make sense, but are lower-level ones that are pretty hard to generalize to all the projects.. But if you have any good idea, please let me know! Bobo.03 (talk) 01:37, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, the problem I see with it is Sports is not a subcategory of Society per Category:Main topic classifications - so the results for this part of the config are less effective and meaningful. Thank you Bobo.03. Hmlarson (talk) 01:46, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Don't create "Wikiproject XXX" redirects in mainspace

Per discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2016 August 6#All cross-namespace redirects of the following type, they are eligible for WP:G4, and I have tagged them as such. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 03:21, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Can you be more specific Pppery? Hmlarson (talk) 03:25, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Sure. In July 2017, you created WikiProject Women's sport/Association football and WikiProject Women's sport/Footy, which I've just tagged as G4 per the above discussion linked and decided that using words would be better than a boilerplate template. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 03:28, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm fine with this Pppery, but the wording on your G4 is incorrect. Please change it to include the link to the deletion discussion that does not include the page you've tagged. Also, when citing an obscure deletion discussion from 4 years ago, a polite heads-up is preferred. Hmlarson (talk) 03:33, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
2 years ago not four. The deletion discussion I cited was a general discussion on all WikiProject XXX redirects, and had the two pages you created already existed when I compiled my full list, they would have been included in it and thus been deleted. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 03:36, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
You're right. It's still obscure. Please update the wording for accuracy. Hmlarson (talk) 03:37, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Hmlarson, did you mean for these to be project-space shortcuts? I see there are others of this type, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Women's sport/Golf task force or Wikipedia:WFOOTY, but Wikipedia:Wikiproject Women's sport/Association football (in Wikipedia: namespace) doesn't exist. Were you intending to make a shortcut? Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:15, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
No, it was a re-direct Ivanvector. Hmlarson (talk) 16:29, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Should I Ivanvector? Hmlarson (talk) 16:40, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Sorry, I'm using "shortcut" in a jargon-y way. I meant did you want to make a redirect to the project page from the Wikipedia: namespace? I can see why such a redirect would be useful, as there are many sports with task forces under WikiProject Women's sport but this one is under a different project. Having a redirect would help interested readers find it. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:43, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Just curious - are you reviewing the page? Or did someone alert you to this? Or are you watching my talk page? Hmlarson (talk) 16:51, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
No, your page is on my watchlist from our discussion about Bring Back Daz Sampson a long while back, and I rarely clean up my watchlist. I'm a regular at WikiProject Redirect and this thread's section header stood out as something where someone might have the wrong idea about redirects, so I stopped by. The error of creating a WikiProject redirect in the main article namespace is actually pretty common, and I was just wondering if moving those redirects to Wikipedia namespace would have been a better solution than deleting them. But no matter, I'm sure you know how to make new redirects in the right place if you think they'll be useful. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:18, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Are you still working in the sockpuppetry area? Hmlarson (talk) 18:57, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
I am, off and on, and less actively than I once was. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 22:29, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Ever run across an editor who was active there who was actually a sockpuppet? Hmlarson (talk) 23:00, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
If you mean among the clerks, only maybe once, and that was more of a disagreement about application of policy than anything malicious. I do see editors filing reports quite often who turn out to be sockpuppets themselves. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:13, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Can you provide any links to cases where editor(s) as you've mentioned were "handled appropriately"? I'd like to compare notes. Hmlarson (talk) 15:37, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

They're usually fairly complicated. The disagreement I referred to was in an arbitration case in which a clerk was desysopped and asked to take a break from clerking, and this was really more of a good-faith misunderstanding about application of policy than deliberate intent to deceive. The other sort of example you can see at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Trampton/Archive and [3] where an active contributor was found to be abusing multiple accounts, and subsequent discussion, although I don't know what in the first case led to the original investigation. If you're looking for an SPI clerk who was found to be a sockpuppet, I'm not aware of that happening. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:17, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Thank you. If you have a few other examples like the one Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Trampton/Archive you've provided, that'd be much appreciated. Hmlarson (talk) 17:28, 15 March 2018 (UTC) Hmlarson (talk) 17:44, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Ivanvector - I'm trying to find that SPI case for Bring Back Daz Sampson but not seeing it in the archives - any tips or can you provide a link? Hmlarson (talk) 00:27, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sevcohaha/Archive. SPI cases are normally named after the user's oldest account, but there's also a search box on the main SPI page that should let you find by other search terms. I'll see if I can find any others like Trampton. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 15:26, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

Shadeene Evans

I saw she was selected for the Young Matildas, and looking for her position (striker :) ) turns out there's a few articles about her as she is a indigenous woman who is a rising talent ([4], [5], [6]). Think it's enough for an article under WP:GNG? --SuperJew (talk) 15:07, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, there's more via Google, Google News in the states. Hmlarson (talk) 15:35, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Why don't you go ahead and add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force/Open tasks#Player articles? Hmlarson (talk) 21:57, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Was wondering where to though... she's not on WNT and not in the W-League --SuperJew (talk) 22:45, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Clarification of wording of Barbara's topic ban

Sandstein has closed the User:Barbara (WVS) ANI discussion with a topic ban worded "is topic-banned (WP:TBAN) from medical articles". Following discussion with Sandstein regarding the scope of that topic ban (User_talk:Sandstein#What_the_topic_ban_covers), it is felt that further wording is required. Therefore it is proposed that the wording of the topic ban is amended to read:

"By consensus of the community, Barbara (WVS) (talk · contribs), also editing as Bfpage (talk · contribs), is topic-banned (WP:TBAN) from health and medical topics, including anatomy and sexuality, broadly construed, and is also banned from interacting with Flyer22 (talk · contribs) (WP:IBAN)."

As you took place in the discussion, please visit Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Proposal_for_clarification_of_scope_of_topic_ban to give your views. SilkTork (talk) 08:40, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello WOSO editors! A few initiatives have been started with an emphasis on making more WOSO links blue (similar to the work that WikiProject Women in Red does) and filling in the gaps within various league, team, and player, etc. articles.

If you're interested in collaborating with others to make more links blue, take a look at the initiatives listed in the box below. Sign up at the bottom of an initiative page and help grow the lists, add potential references, resources, and create the articles ... or create your own initiative.

Did you know ...

WP:GNG takes precedence over WP:NFOOTY (which only includes the players in 1 active women's league)? Often times there is enough media coverage that meets WP:GNG or other notability guidelines. For more information, see WP:WOSO#Notability and be sure to tag the new article talk page with: {{WP Women's sport|footy=yes}}

Has an article you worked on been nominated for deletion? See:

Want some tips, assistance, or resources from other WOSO editors?
Leave a message on the task force talk page.

Thank you for your continued contributions to articles related to women's football / soccer (WOSO)!

2018 NWPL kickoff and end dates

Sorry I couldn't reply properly for several reasons, the league started April 7th, it is not clear when it will end because a venue needs to be chosen for Super 4 as it will be in an abridged format. However, what is certain is that there will be a break during the men's world cup. Regards. HandsomeBoy (talk) 23:19, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

List article for Nigeria senior women national team managers

Hello, I want to create a list article that will contain the start and end date of all Nigerian women managers from the 1991 till date, I was about to start then surprisingly I took a look at Germany and USA to discover that their women team managers don't have a list article. The Nigerian male team has a template that documents the coaches, so a list is not really needed for them. But for the women, people are uninformed about who has been a coach, it is important to have such article. Do you think I should go ahead? Please reply. HandsomeBoy (talk) 18:52, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

HandsomeBoy The US team article has a coach history section. If you think there's enough content for a separate article, go for it. Otherwise, maybe integrating a section on the managers in the main team article might work well. Thanks for bringing attention to the managers template - good idea to implement for other teams, including Nigeria's women's team.Hmlarson (talk) 19:24, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Interview invitation to follow up your experience with our recommendation tool

Hi Hmlarson,

Hope you are doing well! In the past several weeks, we did some analysis and evaluation on our tool. An exciting finding is that invitations from WikiProject organizers increased the edits of new (experienced) editors about 40% within the target project compared to new editors who didn’t receive anything!

I want to have an interview with you about your experience of using our tool. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout whichever works best for you. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards. Please let me know if you could help. Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 21:09, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Hmlarson, hope you are doing well! Just wonder if you'd have any interest in chatting with me about your experience using our tool? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 23:58, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Sent you an email, Bobo.03. Hmlarson (talk) 06:37, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in study

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern working with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please reply to this message or email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview. .

Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 15:16, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Your area of interest

Hi Hmlarson, have seen you around the football articles and especially the women in football ones and thought this might be your area of interest to participate in this discussion. NZFC(talk) 01:25, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

I've mostly moved onto Everipedia, NZ Footballs Conscience. ¡Vamos México Sir Sputnik! Hmlarson (talk) 02:24, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Women's ice hockey coverage

Was this comment necessary? I was merely pointing out the fact that independent media coverage of women's teams (not even talking about individual players) is lacking. Otherwise, I would not need to be asking questions like this. Yosemiter (talk) 18:13, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

What a weird inquiry here. Was my comment necessary? Well, according to me and Wikipedia guidelines, sure. Your comment was thought-provoking. If you're threatened by me calling it that, that's interesting. Why? Hmlarson (talk) 18:25, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
Not threatened, it seemed you are trying to bait/incite something with a project you are known to disagree. I was asking here how your comment there was in any way constructive to discussion immediately at hand.

Also, my comment in that discussion was entirely about GNG, which the Ice Hockey project must adhere to (and I know we have all mentioned that several times to you), but that the hockey project likes separate pages for different iterations when possible. WPIH is actually near unique in that there are pages for every iteration of franchises if they meet GNG individually. Unlike other projects that have single pages and not for the San Diego Chargers, Brooklyn Dodgers, or Philadelphia Warriors. Mind you, black and white rules for how franchises/teams and articles are handled are not something I agree with. For example, there is more than enough info on the Chargers in San Diego to have its own page, which it does under the title History of the San Diego Chargers, but simply being under the article "San Diego Chargers" seems like it would meet the Wikipedia:Article titles more accurately. The WP:American Football though has a consensus for that style and there is no harm done in the end since the redirect exists.

Again, I am pointing out that if we treat women's leagues, teams, and players' articles "differently" to men, it is only because the verifiable and reliable sources treat them differently (as in, there is much less – see my previous posited question I linked about the Toronto Furies). I do not believe any individual on the project has any inherent bias against subjects, just sourcing. Cheers, Yosemiter (talk) 18:41, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Right... Moving on. Hmlarson (talk) 18:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
