Kerouac

Thanks for the Kerouac fix up. I type these things too fast. Leodmacleod 7:53, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Peychaud's Bitters

Thanks for creating Peychaud's Bitters, a much needed article. Good job. Our cocktail coverage was woefully incomplete without it. Cheers, Wikidemo (talk) 23:19, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Paul Wellstone

The Paul Wellstone conspiracy theory is all it is. There has been no credible evidence from an established news source that the President had anything to do with Wellstone's death. A fringe University paper and a self published book are not credible references. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tmoszman (talkcontribs) 04:14, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Your good work

Thank you for your good work with food images. Badagnani (talk) 20:23, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

  • You're welcome! I don't know what came over me - I just started down the Category listing and looked up days later... ;o) Geoff (talk) 21:30, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Are you adding photos from Flickr? Often there isn't a good free photo, so I have to write to the photographers and ask them to change their license. Over half the time, they're happy to do that. Badagnani (talk) 01:17, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

  • I've done a few of my own, but most of them are coming from Flikr right now. I am using Bryan's Tool (http://toolserver.org/~bryan/flickr/upload?username=YOURNAMEHERE) which only goes after images licensed under Creative Commons 2, etc., and all the images I've uploaded to Commons are checked and passed by Magnus' tool, e.g. Image:Chocolate_lava_cake.jpg#file. Check it out. I do find many free images on Flikr that just don't work, but I skip those and go on through the category looking for others. There are so many in the category that it works for now. I hadn't thought of writing to ask for a changed license -- good idea for the future! Geoff (talk) 01:29, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks, Badagnani, for catching me on Cat meat - I was skimming the article too fast and thought sure it was was about cat's meat in the UK, e.g. pet food.Geoff (talk) 21:57, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I think it used to be called that in the U.S., as I think there's an article by Ambrose Bierce about cat meat.

I didn't mean to step on your toes regarding the photo you added to the Deviled crab article. It's a relatively localized item and thus difficult to find pictured online. I need to take a good photo at a cafe around here; the odd stares I'm sure to get will be fun... Zeng8r (talk) 15:45, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

  • It's absolutely not a problem! I just thought I had a close image, but it's ever so much better to get one of the real thing. Go for it! Geoff (talk) 18:18, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Perilla oil

I think we should hold off on a photo for Perilla oil until we can get an actual photo of the oil. Otherwise, the photo tools will show this article as already having a photo. Badagnani (talk) 22:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

  • OK by me. Geoff (talk) 01:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

It's a fairly rarefied item, so I think we need the help of Korean Wikipedians. Unfortunately, most of them are expatriates (usually students), and don't live in Korea :) Badagnani (talk) 01:36, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Clapshot

So that you know, "neeps and tatties" consists of a separate serving of mashed potatoes and one of mashed (sometimes diced) swede. Clapshot is a variant thereof but with the important distinction that they are mashed together. Mutt Lunker (talk) 20:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

  • True. Care to expand Clapshot? I was thinking a one sentence stub didn't do the dish justice. ;o) Geoff (talk) 22:15, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

The slight elaboration, refs and in-text citations I've added probably takes me to the limits of my knowledge on the topic. Don't know anything more regarding its place in Orkney culture, literary refs, significant participation in historical events or the like I'm afraid. Will take a photie if I get round to making any though. Mutt Lunker (talk) 00:30, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Marvelous! There's a really grand photo of a plate of haggis with neeps an tatties on Commons here 1. A photie of Clapshot would be a lovely addition. Geoff (talk) 14:56, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Get it while it's hot! Mutt Lunker (talk) 21:27, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Very high overall! Good show with the refs and all, as well!Geoff (talk) 21:30, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Kabsa and Majboos

Kabsa and Majboos are not the same but there is no much difference as well. Kabsa is a Saudi Arabian dish and Majboos is found in Kuwait and other Gulf countries. They differ in ingredients and taste. Yes it can be merged as well and in the description we can mention the differences. Abushahin (talk) 10:45, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm Dizzy

What seems to have happened, as best I can tell, is that someone noticed that I had uploaded the PD image Dizi.jpg from Farsi Wikipedia to English Wikipedia, primarily because I couldn't get "move to Commons" working. After I corrected the PD tag on my original upload, someone else noticed that it would be a good file to move to Commons. Now Dizi.jpg is in Commons and in the article. So, it appears that everyone is happy, yes? Thanks to Sdrtirs, if I have the right wikipedian.(Read on if you want to follow this scintillating tale of two images.) Speedy deletion of Image:Dizi.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Dizi.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 22:37, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading! Sdrtirs (talk) 22:41, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Zimmern poster.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Zimmern poster.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:19, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Resolution

  • The image in question (for the Andrew Zimmern article) was removed by another editor and we are having a discussion about use of non free images in biographies of living persons (per WP:BLP) and regarding the content of the image itself. If we can resolve the issues raised, I'll put the link to the uploaded image back. If not, I'll let it go into the dustbin of enWP. Geoff (talk) 16:10, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
  • The other editor and I have reached a consensus that this image was inappropriate for the article for a number of reasons, including content and the use of non-free images in biographies of living persons outlined in WP:NFC#UULP. I placed an author's speedy delete request. Searching for an appropriate, free image for the article... Geoff (talk) 19:36, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Taco

Hello, I have started a discussion about Puffy Tacos at the Talk:Taco page. Also, please be aware that Saveur receipe .com does not appear to meet our requirements for reliable sources. There is no evidence that the site has an editorial oversight board or that it has outstanding reputation for fact checking. -- The Red Pen of Doom 18:34, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Well, it is an electronic version of Saveur magazine, published 9X per year with a rate base of 325,000, according to its parent company (Bonnier) website: 2. The magazine has an editorial board, listed here: 3. Sufficient, no? Geoff (talk) 18:41, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of 64.53.52.214

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

    • Not sure why this was posted here, since I'm the one who reported the vandalism from that IP address, not the one who created the page or carried out the vandalism. Geoff (talk) 21:53, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Regarding 64.53.52.214

You created the page in article space (where it does not belong); were you looking for User:64.53.52.214 instead?

--KurtRaschke (talk) 21:54, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Creation?

  • Wouldn't the creation of the article show in my contributions log or in the combined log for the deleted page? Neither shows creation of such an article by me. I didn't set out to create that page in article space and I don't know what I might have done to accidentally create it. All I did was use the link in the User talk:64.53.52.214 page to report the IP vandalism per the WHOIS tag that is at the top of the page. Did filling out that report create the article? If so, how? Sorry, I'm really nonplused. Geoff (talk) 22:08, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
    • If that's the case, then there's probably an issue with the form at WP:Abuse reports; it shouldn't be creating abuse reports in article space. I would suggest that you drop a note at WT:Abuse reports documenting your experience, and also call attention to the problem at WP:VPT and/or WP:AN. As for the log, deleted contributions are only visible to admins. KurtRaschke (talk) 17:08, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
      • Will do and thanks for the response! Geoff (talk) 17:59, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Your request for rollback

After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback can be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback may be removed at any time.

If you no longer want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some information on how to use rollback, you can view this page. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, just leave me a message if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Happy editing! — Aitias // discussion 00:27, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the misunderstanding about changing categories.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I changed the Category New York City actors to New York actors, as there were too few actors. I am inexperienced in this technical field, I did not intend any vandalism. Can you direct the New York City actors page to New York actors?

Thanks

With this edit (diff[4]) you re-added vandalism to the page, then warned the IP editor for cleaning up vandalism (diff [5]). Maybe it would be good to slow down a little with Huggle (and perhaps apologise to the IP editor?). Cheers, Paxse (talk) 18:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Kerouac

Hello, I had removed the cat based on the fact that it was mass added to multiple articles by an editor with no sourcing for most of the articles. Random IP I guess

You left this message today:

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to Der Schlangemann has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, please ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thank you.

At first I thought I was logged on, but I wasn't. I apparently get a random IP stamp for this address that changes every once in a while. For instance, I got the above message for 206..., but when I signed originally here under a "misattribution" section name (again, I thought I was logged in. I checked the history on the page and did not see my handle, so assumed you made a mistake), it started 166...

I bring this up because it appears that leaving messages on that talk won't reach any particular person. I myself had never been to the above article before following your link. 206.195.188.253 (talk) 00:24, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

  • It may be that the dynamically assigned IP address you used happened to be used by someone else who edited the article when you weren't logged on. You can avoid such misdirected messages by setting up a Wikipedia account. This is the addition to Der Schlangemann which I reverted on December 24: [6] - it was added using the 206.195.188.253 IP address. You can see why I reverted it. Pat Devlin

I noticed you reverted an IP's edit to the Pat Devlin article saying he hasn't said where he's going, and obviously this was done in good faith but there are actually multiple websites reporting that he's going to Delaware and I have changed it back and provided sources.--Iamawesome800 00:53, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Awesome. All it needed was some updated sourcing to support the change. Geoff T C 00:56, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Gravity Entertainment Article

Hello, seems like you took the right person for the wrong person. Stefan F. Gagnon is currently beeing subject to law enforcement investigations. While "Ktrubolt" is trying to warn the public about the going bad investments and verdicts against Gravity and Gagnon. So, something is messed and mixed up there. They are certainly not the same people using different accounts! Gagnon and his friends have had numerous attempts to take the information off WIKIPEDIA. Since they misues the legitimately appearing information on the internet and fool investorts by claiming they are a big operateable business conglomerate. Currently they are wanted for taking 100 million dollars. So please unblock "Ktrubolt" and lock the article so people are being made aware of these business dealsings. Thank you Geoff. User talk:Legalaidaut 17:45, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

  • And hello, as well. I'm not an administrator, so I can't block (or unblock) any user. A blocked user can appeal by following this procedure. It appeared to me (and others) that Ktruboldt's edits to Gravity Entertainment were the same as those being made by Steven f gagnon. That suggested sock puppetry. I do regret getting in the middle of what appeared to be simple page blanking/vandalism issue. Anyway - it appears that the article is stable (for the moment). Requests for page protection can be made here. Regards, Geoff T C 19:22, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Soulja Boy Edit

Man, When I put Bad rap as a genre, I mean its a genre. I dont think anyone else does the "rap" style Soulja Boy does. Therefore, it needs a name. The reason I chose Bad Rap is because, Argue as you like, Soulja Boy has little lyrical ability. He can't write rap as its been done for the past 40 YEARS. People eat it up, yes, but its not RAP, its him telling us that he "turns his swag on" for 3 and a half minutes. If he did write actual rap, I wouldnt be calling it bad rap because it would be good! Rap and Hip-hop music has to come with a message, or at least the emcee has to be clever in what he/she says, and I dont define someone telling me to "crank dat soulja boy" as a real message or particularly clever. Gangsta Rap was a protest, Underground Hip-Hop sends messages, rappers these days tell stories, and soulja boy is not a rapper. So I'd be grateful if you removed any element of hip-hop from soulja boy's pages, or stick with bad rap.

(Oh and the unsigned and still a knob edit was just foolin, sorry.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.69.34.189 (talk) 00:32, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

  • It would help a lot if you would start a discussion about this on the article's Talk page to get a sense of the community's feeling about Soulja Boy's style. It also helps generally if you add a comment when you are editing pages so that those of us who are watching for vandalism or "bogus" edits can distinguish good faith efforts like yours from those of others who just want to leave their marks on article pages. Lastly, you should consider signing up for a free Wikipedia account so that you don't get edit warnings that don't apply to edits you've done -- as when the IP address is reassigned to another, random user by your ISP. Sounds like you have some good things to contribute to all of our understanding, especially of rap styles/genres. Geoff T C 01:32, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Include WP:V sources and an edit summary to avoid reverts when you're doing extensive edits to an important article. What did I do ? I removed an illegal image ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tom.magnussen (talkcontribs) 11:48, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

  • You are referring to your removal, which I and two other editors repeatedly reverted, of the controversial image linked to the article Jyllands-Posten_Muhammad_cartoons_controversy. The talk page for that article (Talk:Jyllands-Posten_Muhammad_cartoons_controversy) has a detailed discussion and notices regarding display of that image. The short of it is that the community has determined that the image will not be removed for a number of reasons. Instructions for changing a user's browser settings are given so that those users who are offended by the image itself may still read the article without having to view the image. Also, in general, unilaterally deleting content is not how Wikipedia is "done." See, for example, WP:DELETE. Nothing personal was implied by the reversions or the warnings and I hope that you will continue your constructive contributions to en:WP. Geoff T C 16:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Pongprom

Not sure if I'm reading the situation correctly, but it would appear that Pongprom (talk · contribs) was removing the material he added and tagged as copyvio by replacing it with a stub. Probably not a bad idea. Could you re-evaluate? Kuru talk 00:25, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

The concern was that the user was removing the copyvio tag added by another editor. For all I could tell, the new material being added was also copyvio. Wouldn't it be better if the page was speedy deleted, if that was the case? Someone can always add a new page on the subject without potentially violating copyright, yes? Geoff T C 00:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Meh. It's all the same result for the article, so it's all good. Would you mind giving him a pass on the technical violation?  :) Kuru talk 00:35, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Large pie.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Large pie.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:12, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

What was wrong with my edit on cleft chin?? Sure, I was sandboxing how to do images, but I kept it relevant this time. Tim Buckley had a cleft chin-- look it up. Much luv. 146.115.66.68 (talk) 01:22, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Happy/Sad

How is it that a picture can appear on other wikipedia articles eg. Happy Sad and be fair use but not on that article and be fair use? Much luv. 146.115.66.68 (talk) 01:37, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Using the photo of Tim Buckley fails free use rationale, WP:NFC, when used for the Cleft chin article. See the rationale given on the page from which you linked the image [8]. The preexisting photo for the article is a good, generic illustration of cleft chins [9] and, as noted on the image page, the image is in the public domain as opposed to that of Mr. Buckley, which is not. Best use the sandbox for such testing and a good read of WP:NFC would help explain the issue. Wikipedia is very sensitive to copyright issues, especially regarding images of living persons. Re: Edit of "Westmont High School" (Campbell, CA)

Dear Mr. Lane,

I'm sorry, but you must have confused me with someone else when you sent me the message about "my" edit of the article "Westmont High School" (Campbell, CA) having been reverted, as I never did in fact edit that article. As a matter of fact, I have recently edited the articles "Ilyushin Il-2", "Charles Lindbergh", "Cornelia Fort", and a few other aviation-related articles (solely with the intent of improving clarity), but I have not recently viewed or edited the article "Westmont High School" (Campbell, CA). This must have been some sort of misunderstanding, perhaps caused by a conflicting IP address or a similar glitch. Therefore, I will consider it a "wrong number" situation, and disregard the aforementioned message.

Sincerely,

Dennis Kitainik 146.74.226.92 (talk) 00:43, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Bacon pancakes

Thanks for adding the photo, but that .jpg appears to be mislabeled. I looked at the original on Flickr and it doesn't say anything about pork or bacon. I think it's just a pankakka (swedish pancake). ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:53, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Bollocks! Do you suppose it was too good to be true? I just went by the name, taking it at face value without investigating, as I haven't seen (nor tasted) the bacon-containing version. I posted a note on the uploader's Talk page asking if s/he could recall (3 years later) why s/he changed the name from "Swedish pancakes" on Flickr to "Fläskpannkaka" when moving to Commons. Further confusing the issue is the Swedish/English recipe linked to the article which refers to making the pancakes with or without bacon. Should we take down the photo pending clarification? Are you up to baking up a batch of "true" Fläskpannkaka, bacon and all, and posting a photo? When all else fails... (I did that for Lyonnaise_potatoes when I couldn't find a Flickr or Commons photo.) Or perhaps the uploading editor has a really good explanation after all these years. What do you think? Geoff T C 00:31, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Sauteed taters
I'm no expert. But the photos on Flickr (none of which have suitable licensing for use on Wiki) suggest the photo of the thin crepes with lingonberry jam depict pannkaka without the fläsk. I'll leave the cooking of a photogenic batch of the real deal to you, as you're closer to the source and did such an exceptional job with the taters. Lingonberries are hard to find outside of Ikea stores here. Cheers. ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:47, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
You're too kind! So, I've removed the link to the photo in the article and restored the reqphoto tag on its talk page pending responses from the uploader of the Commons photo and from the Flickr uploader who posted the (clearly different) photos to Flickr "all rights reserved." If she will grant permission, perhaps her bacon-infused photo can be used for the article, as it certainly does look like the description. Cheers also! A pleasure working with you! Geoff T C 03:04, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
With regards to File:Fläskpannkaka.jpg, I was at the time working from tags attached to the photograph on Flickr. Since Stu Spivack had added the tag Fläskpannkaka, I uploaded it as an example without really checking in depth the difference between the two. It looks like he realised his mistake later and removed the tag, but the file remained as was on Commons until now. I've stopped working on the Commons project fairly recently, but if you feel that the filename is misleading, feel free to add a notice to the description page asking for a rename or outright deletion. Shame, they do look tasty :) GeeJo (t)(c) • 12:00, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, the photo is great and they do look tasty indeed. I'll just put a note over in Commons requesting a rename to pannkaka as Child suggested. Thanks for getting back to me! Regards, Geoff T C 14:11, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Seafoam & Twizzlers

What exactly is "seafoam" in the cake context? Whipped cream with green food coloring? See also seafoam salad (NO, I did not create that article). All these new fangled foods. What happened to the good old fashioned strawberry twizzlers that you couldn't peel apart??? :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:05, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

  • Seafoam frosting on the Spice cake photo: I didn't know when I found the photo - the flickr post where I found the photo [12] had no explanation. A Google search reveals it to be a type of boiled frosting, e.g. [13] or [14], which most posts call "old-fashioned." Strawberry twizzlers - I did see a big bag of them in the market when I was looking for something else, but I decided not to buy them just for a photo (because I toss candy when I buy it for photos, unless I can find a ten-year-old whose dentist's boat payment I wish to support). Cheers! :o) Geoff T C 16:31, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Haha. Understood. You must have a lot of self-control! The fancy restaurants are into "foam" too these days. What is the world coming to?  :) I was never big on frostings. The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre

Hi Glane23/Archive 1! There appears to be a discrepancy between the information in The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre article which you have contributed to, edited, or possibly mentioned in discussions. The November 2008 Ofsted report and the article may not be referring to the same schools. Moreover, in an article about Heathfield School, Wolverley it is claimed that it merged with Bewdley. However, a website exists for a Heathfield school in Wolverly about an independent school on which there exists very little verifiable online information. There is clearly some confusion concerning these two schools and their affiliation. If you can help with these issues please see Talk:The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre, improve or tag the article if you can, and leave any comments there.--Kudpung (talk) 17:25, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Photo

Thanks! That Flickr account has a lot of photos we need to use. Are they really okay with creative commons??? ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:30, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm using "Bryan's Tool," through Magnus' "F.I.S.T." which includes an automatic script that is checking for acceptable copyrights as it uploads to Commons. Those are all "cc-by-2.0" images, so they are free to upload and to use without restriction. They only need to be attributed to the author, which the tool also automatically does when its script creates the Commons description page. Geoff T C 21:35, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
My Wiki sense was tingling so I checked into it a little bit. It appears the photos are from a blog. But they were uploaded to the blog by others. So I think they need to be better attributed, starting with the person uploading them to Flickr. There are a bunch of other ones I want to add (like the black garlic image) but I'm going to wait and see how things play out after I leave a note for that Flickr account. Cheerios! What's happening out in your neck of the woods? Anything exciting? Have fun! ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:37, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Good call. All the script can do is read the Flickr tag. But, looking at the Foodista blog title page, the blog where these come from, I see that the entire work is licensed under cc-by-3.0, so the question then is whether attribution to the blog, which is what the tool picks up from the author specification at Flickr, satisfies Creative Commons attribution. My analysis is that it does. Anyone know a wikilawyer? Cheers! Geoff T C 22:47, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
And if not, I notice that the Flickr page for one of them, the photo of a conkie, has a small tag with the original uploaders name on the description page. I suppose the attribution could be manually changed on the Commons page to reflect that person's name, but the fact is, they uploaded to a blog under the CC license and the attribution links back to the Flickr page which includes their name, as well as the blog's name ("foodista"). That should make even a wikilawyer happy, no? Geoff T C 22:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I didn't see that the photographer's name was included. I will have to take another look. You're talking about the tag that says "Desiree Lowe"? That's not very good attribution. Should be included in the caption. But I looked through the blogs other photos and many of the captions are off anyway, so I guess it's a case of an imperfect system. I think the photographer should be given clear credit, especially when they donate their work. Thanks for adding the photo. :) The only ones left are glorified rice, seven-layer salad, cow cod soup, grater cake, fish tea, Pink Dot, Hof's Hut, Drago restaurants, cookie salad, Tart 'n' Tinys, and Chili Bowl (restaurant). (That uploader has a good shot of black garlic though...) ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:31, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Okay, so I think it's best to include the photographers name. Now that we've cleared that up, here's your assignment (or your bot's anyway). Black garlic [16] and/ or[17]. Canary melon [18]. Pancit [19] We already have photos of poori, but none as good or as encyclopedic (showing accompaniments) as this one [20]. Lechon kiwali by CeciliaMQ (although I see there is already a good photo). [21]. Bacon wrapped breadsticks [22]. And this photo for West 8 (one of my favs) is also good. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:07, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Piel de Sapo [23]. Koulourakia [24]. Kofte kebab 25. And there is a photo already for orecchiette, but this a lovely shot of a dish using it [26]. :) Okay. I'll try to do some work of my own now. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:57, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

  • FIST is here. Once it finds a photo on Flickr, it gives you an option to upload to Commons with Bryan's tool. You have to be logged on to Commons first. (The tools on toolserver sometimes don't work, like right now.) It's a useful tool, because it also searches all languages wikipedia and Commons for images. Geoff T C 09:48, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the link. But it didn't make sense to me. :) Does this mean you're not going to do all my image work for me? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:20, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Just fill in the name of the article you're working on (or the name of the image, if you know it, e.g. orecchiette, etc.) in the big blank at the top of the page and click "Do It" at the bottom right of the page. If it's working, thumbnails of the free images found in Commons, in any of the language wikis and/or on Flickr will display below. It can take a minute or two, depending on server load. Each thumbnail will have a link to Bryan's tool included, which makes it super easy to upload images to Commons. Geoff T C 14:14, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Alas, I just tried it and it is still not working. Uploading Flickr images manually is a bit more work: downloading them first, uploading them and properly tagging them, etc. Blah! Geoff T C 14:19, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Well, just to try it, I managed to upload manually the Foodistablog photo of Koulourakia to Commons. Took quite a bit of fidgetty work to get the description properly done. Then, I found that an identically named image exists in en.wikipedia, showing the cookies in the elongated twist version, rather the the "coiled snake" shape as per Foodista. So I used the latter to replace the photo for the Koulourakia article, since it more prominently features the subject cookies than the prior assortment photo. I still haven't found out how to point to a Commons image file when there is a different one with the same name stored on en.wiki. Sigh... Geoff T C 14:56, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
  • FIST is working again. Uploaded a few of the photos to Commons and to the articles. Geoff T C 16:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
The canary melon is gorgeous. Whether an article for every melon is needed I have no idea, but why not? :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:32, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
The black garlic and kofte kebabs look great too! ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:45, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
That foodista blog upload is a true treasure worth sharing. Geoff T C 23:18, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
I agree. The only trouble I have is trying to look through all their pages of photos because I can't seem to figure out how to navigate the pages and go directly to say page 50 or 100 without scrolling 3 at a time or so. And in a case where there are 1100 pages going through a few pages at a time to get to the pages I haven't checked out yet is pretty frustrating. Am I missing something obvious on how to get where I want to go? Thanks again for adding those photos. They look great. It's a really big improvement to a food article when you can actually see the freaking thing. :) What's on tap for the weekend? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:17, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Never been able to find another way to navigate Flickr. You're welcome! Have a good weekend yourself! Geoff T C 10:43, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (File:Cookie dough bites.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Cookie dough bites.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. FileBot (talk) 20:10, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Between you and me, it's listed as an 8-layer salad in the Flickr description, but it looks exactly right, and the ingredients which are visible in the photo match the article description so closely, that I thought the photo to be a worthy example of the genre. I also think the preparer was probably trying to one-up everyone, as in Spinal Tap -- "It goes to 11..." ;o) Geoff T C 17:51, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Suspected sock not registered

You recently tagged User:Gen-X-Beatles as a suspected sockpuppet. However, User:Gen-X-Beatles is not a registered user. Did you intend to tag a different userpage?--Doug.(talk contribs) 20:14, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

The user (and the suspect sock) were indefinitely blocked as vandalism-only accounts shortly after I posted the tags. (See, e.g. [27] and this boast re: socks [28]) Geoff T C 21:32, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, but that links to User:Gex-X-Beatles, you tagged User:Gen-X-Beatles. (btw, I removed your post to my usertalk so I could paste it back here with my response, I didn't realize you were double posting until I got back here - I move my posts back and forth - cumbersome but keeps them together).--Doug.(talk contribs) 21:42, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Must have missed the 'n' in the user name. I thought I had launched the ARV request off the correct user posting, but I guess not. Sorry for the confusion. Geoff T C 23:29, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
NP, I think you created the page though with the tag so it showed up on Wikipedia:Database reports/Ownerless pages in the user space.--Doug.(talk contribs) 14:17, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Didn't mean to do that. Was trying to flag the user who was vandalizing pages and boasting about socks. I'll watch what I'm doing more carefully if it should come up again. That was the first time I tried tagging a sock user. Thanks for the help. Geoff T C 18:49, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Just to let you know that all of these edits you reverted were because they were on alternative accounts of the user Bluedogtn, and an AN/I case suggesting that he should be limited to just one account was going on at the time. Referring to this edit to Omar Sharif. First, it helps if you add an informative edit description when you're adding to articles and second, adding the entire quote from the reference, in both Spanish and English, is overkill. Perhaps if you edit the reference (and add an edit description when you do so), it would be a more constructive addition to the article. I'll leave you to it. Geoff T C 18:13, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
And note further, per this edit, Nableezy notes that more recent sources show the reference you cited to be inaccurate. Again, I'll leave you to it. Geoff T C 12:54, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

I would like to reserve the right to put that word on the article. I've personally heard people say Bloodyhellivebeenbittenbyaturtleohmygositstingslikeasonofabitch before. Besides, it doesn't hurt anyone and there are some other terms on the article that are "coined up". Can you give me a good reason why I can't use this one?

School IPs.

Generally speaking, don't even waste time giving them the benefit of the doubt, especially if they have an arms-length warning page. Hit 'em with a three or four, or if they have an extensive block list, just go straight to reporting them. It literally isn't worth the waste showing them good faith unless it's new. HalfShadow (talk) 16:58, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Good point. I'm still at the "assume good faith" for (almost) everyone. Thanks. BTW - how do I see that an IP user is one of the school accounts when I'm using Huggle to correct these bad edits? It's not so obvious there, at least to me at this stage. Geoff T C 17:42, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Irukandji jellyfish

> I saw the edit you made to the page Irukandji jellyfish-2 and reverted it...

I noticed the title of the article is "Irukandji Jellyfish" while the first line of the article is "Irukandji jellyfish" (note capitalisation). Since the latter is correct, the title should be the same, so I tried to move/rename the article, but that was not possible because the name already existed. Then I tried to work around it by renaming the redirect page to ***-2, did not work either, so I gave up and reverted my first attempt. Maybe you can rename the article...
See also entry #13 on the article's discussion/talk page. MH (talk) 11:51, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
I see. That's more than I know how to handle correctly and I probably would run into the same issue you encountered. Perhaps another editor with more experience in moving/renaming will come along. So I added a request to that effect to that section of the article's talk page. Geoff T C 16:00, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Removal of Key Reference from Meg Whitman Bio

You have inappropriately removed a detailed incisive article from NBC.com pertaining to "Meg Whitman's Dirty Dotcom Deals."

The source is a well-respected news bureau (NBC).

Ms. Whitman's page is NOT a political campaign page, it is supposed to be a NEUTRAL biography, and any attempt to expunge negative aspects of her past are entirely unacceptable, and a formal protest to Wikipedia administration will ensue immediately, if the reference in question is not replaced summarily. Moreover, a lock will be requested for the page to prevent these kinds of tendentious omissions in the future.

The fact that there was NO mention of her longstanding DIRECT connections to Goldman Sachs in the first place, given admission today by Goldman Sachs CEO Blankfein that the corporation willfully committed acts of malfeasance in the past, is inexcusable. The fact that Ms. Whitman benefited to the tune of MILLIONS via access to insider info provided by Goldman Sachs, and at the expense of the public shareholder, is not a minor issue.

By analogy, it would be akin to providing a biography of Martha Stewart, then neglecting to mention the chapter of her life dealing with her purchase of ImClone.

BiographicalOmissionsCorrected (talk) 02:53, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Please accept my apology, it was an error. I assume you've corrected my error by now. Geoff Say something! 03:40, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
I will correct it later, when I get a moment of free time. I wanted to await your response since I think it is inappropriate to reinsert info if a Wikipedia editor feels adamant that it must not be done. Given that you approve the logic behind the reinstatement of omitted info, then I cannot find any fault with you since I assume you had your reasons. Thanks...

BiographicalOmissionsCorrected (talk) 04:30, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Glane, it appears that something has been done to prevent the reinstated reference from working within the Wikipedia page. I tried FIVE times to make the link work within Wikipedia code format, yet it refuses to work this time around. Instead, receive a message that reads, "Article cannot be found." That is especially strange since the URL http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Dirty-Dotcom-Deals-May-Doom-Whitman-Campaign-jw.html works fine in any web browser and connects to the pertinent news article. Until it was removed by you, the article could be found within Wikipedia code format. Anyway, here is the bottom line: the news article is NOT missing, it very much exists! Naturally it is a news article that the Whitman entourage would wish to suppress but it is extremely relevant to her biography. Would you please get this link to work again at Wikipedia, or I must make a formal investigation out of the entire matter.

BiographicalOmissionsCorrected (talk) 09:34, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

one final point, Glane....since Ms. Whitman has access to some incredible computer brains vis a vis internet coding, given her role as head of Ebay, then if you cannot re-establish the original "Dirty Dotcoms..." link, you might wish to investigate whether a counterfeit web page has been created that has been coded to appear PRIOR to the actual news article. If you cannot resolve the issue on your own, then I will hire my own code sleuth to look into the entire matter, if necessary. Finally, if you are able to reinstate the link, please remove the current WORK name nbcbayarea.com and replace it with NBC.com, as it appeared originally prior to your removal of the article, thanks.

BiographicalOmissionsCorrected (talk) 09:51, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Whoa, mate, I only reverted a Wikipedia edit. I didn't do anything to a page or link anywhere else on the 'net. I'm just an editor around here, not a tech guru. No problem, the issue was rectified by editor Tim Ross, except ideally, he should have replaced ref 11 news source, nbcbayarea.com and replaced it with the original news source NBC.com. Is that something you can do, since I feel I have "over-edited" that listing at this point? By the way, are you Australian? I see you use "mate" a lot in your writings, reminds me of my time spent in Sydney a long time ago, everybody called me "mate" down there.

Hey there Gkane23,

I saw you were doing some (great) work fighting vandals. Thanks! How is that show? I haven't caught it yet. But I did rewatch the original. Some interesting themes and such. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
I've seen the pilot and one other episode on Hulu. Kind of like Next Gen compared to Star Trek - the Original Series in that the special effects are much better (now that was tough!), but the story lines seem to be as challenging and entertaining. As you say, science fiction has always been able to deal with tough questions because "all those people are from other planets, so they don't threaten me." Bacon WikiCup Week 1 - Leader Interview

Glane23, as the current leader of the race for the Bacon WikiCup 2010, can you give us some feedback about how the Bacon Challenge has being going from your point of view.

1. Firstly, what are your general thoughts about the concept of creating large masses of bacon-related content and why?

Bacon is the perfect food.

2. You have managed to climb into first place by uploading an impressive twenty-three pictures. Shall we expect more pictures to come from you, or are you thinking about writing an article?

Finding, creating and uploading photographs, especially of food, seems to be a niche I've found for the moment. I've also gravitated more toward elf-like activities than toward creating new articles, as there are so many articles that need content improvements. I might write an article if the right bacon moves me.

3. You currently hold the lead by more than thirty points. Are you expecting to maintain your lead for a long time?

One time I won a frozen turkey. Since then, I've never won anything, so I've had my moment of triumph. I can't imagine holding the lead for long, especially since the contest is just now starting to gain momentum.

4. Other editors have earned points by contributing content too. Which contributed content have you found the most interesting and why?

I'm appalled and fascinated by Drmies' Calfs' Liver with Bacon article. Since he won't cook it, and since I haven't been able to find an existing photo with the proper rights available, I may have to cook it myself so we have a photo to illustrate the article. I've been trying to nerve myself up for the attempt, but catching the calf has proven to be the toughest part so far. I can't imagine why it runs like crazy whenever I try to approach it, although I suppose it might be the axe.

5. Apart from yourself, who do you think is most likely to win the Bacon WikiCup and why?

I'd put my money on prolific contributor ChildofMidnight. I think he started the whole contest just so he'd have an excuse to write about something new.

Zeeuws spek DYK

Bacon's temptations are of course not to be laughed at, but that doesn't mean that bacon DYKs shouldn't have the minimum length: see T:TDYK#Zeeuws spek. Ucucha 12:45, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Butting in from CoM's talk page, the article is too short, approximately 1,000 characters (minimum 1,500). There are a couple ways to calculate it, you can copy the text (prose, not see also, lists or references) to MS Word, or you can use this nifty tool.--kelapstick (talk) 00:08, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I didn't think there was a minimum length for bacon. But DYK is very technical and they have high standards for everything (even steamed clams had to be globalized first and the Imperialistic Brits at DYK didn't want to accept barberpole candy whatsover (apparently there's something remotely similar over there called rock, and they may have been embarassed that our version is so much better looking)! Maybe you can find a lengthier batch, or bulk up the article so the strips seems bigger and more substantial. I'm not sure if it matters whether it's thick cut or regular (if this type is anything like stegt flæsk, it's thick cut) but I prefer mine not to be cooked for too long. The really cripsy pieces are fine to use as bacon bits in a salad, but a la carte I like some chew to my bacon. Thanks for asking. ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:08, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Glane. The author of an article is in fact allowed to blank the article, provided no other editor has contributed to the article, compare WP:CSD#G7. Favonian (talk) 14:44, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

  • I knew that, but I thought that removing the deletion tag, which occurred in this case, would keep the blanked article "below the radar" so that an admin wouldn't know it needed to be deleted. I suppose the better course would be just to add back a db-self tag? Perhaps I still don't understand the process fully. Thanks for the note, though. Geoff Who, me? 16:58, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Conflicted licensing on image File:Almond butter.JPG

The above noted image or media file appears to have conflicted licensing. As an image cannot be both 'free' and 'unfree', a check of the exact status of this media/image concerned is advised.Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:05, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I see your point. Since I took the photo of the trademarked product, I meant that my own photo was released under those licenses, while the content of the image itself was non-free as depicting a trademark. I've removed my GNU and CC tags to mitigate the confusion, leaving only the non-free tag and rationale. How's that? Geoff Who, me? 21:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Image Licensing

Bakers coconut vintage ad.jpg - a trademarked logo contained in a photo uploaded to flickr by a third person and released there under a CC-BY-2.0 attribution license.

This is a photo I uploaded from Flickr based on the CC-BY-2.0 license under which it was released by its creator. The image is used in the Franklin Baker Company article. I think, in this case, I can't remove the CC-BY-2.0 license as the photo not my own work and, by its terms, the photograph can be used for any purpose so long as the attribution is included, as it is in this case. The fact that the photo is itself released by its creator does not mean that the content is also free, if the content is (or may be) otherwise non-free. In this case, I'm going on the assumption that the content includes (potentially) trademarked imagery, specifically the images of the Bakers coconut containers in the lower right, so the safest licensing for en-wiki is non-free with a fair use rationale.

Indeed it would be, by all means mention the original flickr uploader (somehow), but if it's non-free content featured it has

to have a non-free licence and a rationale..

BTW I also suggest you check back over your previous uploads as well..

To name but a few, also have confused/conflicted licensing issues. Cleaning these up will help improve Wikipedia immensely :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:25, 1 January 2010 (UTC) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:25, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Corrected the conflicting licensing on these images. Where they were from others' work posted to flickr, and where they were created and uploaded by me, I added a note regarding the source of the image in the permissions line of the template, along the lines suggested by J Milburn below. Geoff Who, me? 23:50, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Your mail

Fisrtly, I prefer to do things 'on-wiki' :)

In relation to some of the points in your e-mail..

i) An image on Flickr with a certain license doesn't mean that license is always OK. A lot of people misunderstand copyright issues when it comes to product artwork ( Flickr and Wikipedia users alike )

ii) If it's non-free content featured, then it has to have a non-free license tag/rational on wiki, REGARDLESS of what license the source claims it is.

iv) if you don't feel comfortable removing license tags, ask an admin, They WILL usally know what the correct tag for something is. ( Speak to User:J_Milburn for example , he's been very responsive to well-made queries I've made on image issues). Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:36, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Right-o, mate. The non-free rationale part I understood, which is why I uploaded all the images we're discussing, regardless of their source, with non-free tags and fair use rationales. The issue is the inclusion of a free use license for the photo itself along with the non-free notice and rationale where the content is non-free. I'll run it by J Milburn, as you suggest. Geoff Who, me? 22:43, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Re:Image licensing - non-free content

My question was:

I have a number of food-related images of products, logos, organzations and other trademarked, copyrighted or otherwise non-free images I've uploaded to illustrate articles under the fair use rationale. Some of them were photos I took myself and some I found on flickr posted under CC-BY-2.0 licenses. Sfan00 IMG has let me know that a number of these have conflicting licensing tags, because they have both non-free notices/fair use rationales AND a free use license noted on the image page. Examples:
I thought the easy way to answer Sfan's concerns for photos I took myself was to remove my own GNU and CC licenses for the photos themselves, but I had another thought when I ran into one of my uploaded images on his list that I had found on flickr. I didn't take the photo, but the photographer had posted it with a CC-BY-2.0 attribution license, which means it could be used anywhere and in any way so long as the attribution (and the license) was included. I'm not comfortable removing someone else's license tag. So, it makes sense that the photo license be included and also the non-free tage and rationale as the subject matter depicts non-free material, such as an image of a product label.
As I thought about it, I noticed a note on Sfan's talk page from WhisperToMe regarding French licensing:
  • AFGonesseMemorial.jpg
In France two licenses are recognized: One for the photographer, and one for the non-free object being photographed. The photographer license is a free one, but the object is non-free. The image is treated as a non-free picture. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:47, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- in which there are two separate licenses, one for the photo itself and one for the content. That concept seems to perfectly sum up a photo taken of a trademarked or copyright-protected subject. I'm wondering if that is the correct approach to take regarding this specific type of product, logo or organization photo, whether or not French law is involved? It makes sense to me. What do you think? Thanks for the help. Geoff Who, me? 22:53, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

The situation isn't really as complicated as you are making it- basically, these images must be treated as non-free on the English Wikipedia, and so the only copyright tag should be the non-free one. You are correct that there are two licenses at work (and also correct that the license and name of the Flickr user should be included) but that does not mean we need to use one of our templates. Instead, as already said, the only template should be the non-free one; the provenance and licensing of the photograph (as opposed to what it depicts) can be discussed in the sourcing or "other information" sections of the non-free use rationale template. The same is true in the case of French buildings. J Milburn (talk) 23:03, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

OK makes sense. I'll get to work. Thanks very much. Geoff Who, me? 23:11, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Amedei Porcelana chocolate bars.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Amedei Porcelana chocolate bars.jpg.

Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 03:14, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Geoff,

I am very frustrated at this point and am not sure who I am supposed to contact. You removed some of my content from the Steve Barton Wikipedia page. Someone keeps posting false information on this page and whenever I change the false information, he/she deletes it and puts his info right back where it was. I find this to be malicious activity. He/she is stating a bunch of outrageous rumors and claiming they are fact but is not citing any references and has absolutely no proof to back up his/her claim. And I have no way to contact this person directly, as I have no idea who they are.

You can review the history of that page here to see who has been editing. You can try initiating a dialogue on the article's talk page. Your revision is the kind of note you would post on the talk page, rather than in the article. This page has much useful information, including how to include citations within articles and the kind of verifiable references that should be cited. Try those things and don't give up! I removed only a dead link, added another link, added a table, and reverted an edit on my talk page that claimed I was vandalising DiLorenzo's page. You should pay attention to your reverts more carefully so they aren't guilty of the crime you are accusing others of, even if it's by a computer sending those messages. 71.106.108.127 (talk) 19:58, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

As I said earlier, I've stepped back a bit to let other editors weigh in lest I appear to be acting in an unconstructive manner myself as, for example, this note from your talk page about the edits you've made to Thomas DiLorenzo:
You also threw in some unhelpful hidden tags and didn't explain them, along with removing book titles. You could have been blocked for edit warring. I've semi-protected the article, if you have more to say about it, use the talk page. Gwen Gale (talk) 20:25, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
It really is nothing personal, mate. Let me know if I can be of any assistance with helping navigate the ins and outs of editing this thing of ours. Geoff Who, me? 23:15, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Image

Does this licensing make the image okay to use [37]? If so, do you want to put it up at Commons for me???? :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:21, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Alas, no - it's licensed as a Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 No Derivative Works image. We can't post images from Flickr unless they are published without the "No Derivative Works" restriction. Just to be sure, I tried using Bryan's Upload Tool on the image and got an error message: "The image on Flickr is not licensed under a sufficiently free license." I see the Flickr user was trying to change the license at your request. S/he needs to use the "Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic" version of the Creative Commons license for Commons to allow the upload. Perhaps your powers of persuasion can be employed once again. Replaceable fair use File:Curing salt.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Curing salt.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 10:00, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Can't argue the point, mate. I've tagged the image with a G7 tag and commented it out of the article while I look for a free image to replace it. Geoff Who, me? 16:21, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Third Coming

I made the mistake of going into Wikipedia last night after a few glasses of wine, and somehow thought the Yeats poem belonged on CoM's talk page under the ArbCom heading. In the cold light of morning, I thought again - seemed silly. I trimmed it down, giving "copyvio" as an excuse. User:Tarc reverted that - not a copyvio. I explained to Tarc and re-pruned the poem. Now you have reverted that, and it appears in its full glory for a third time! I give up. I suppose the poem is meant to be. Leave it. The mood seems right, but I still don't know what it means. Maybe a glass or two of wine would help...  :~} Aymatth2 (talk) 01:42, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

I noticed the poem when I was stone cold sober and it just seemed to fit everything going on with CoM and the rest. You were inspired - your first instinct was the right one, mate! Geoff Who, me? 03:14, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Happy Hogday

When will you be able to photograph a Bacon Deluxe? ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:26, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Consider it on the list! Next on my travels I'll find a Wendy's and slam one down after I capture its glory. Geoff Who, me? 02:02, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Ooh-ooh! I checked Flickr and lawdy-me, there was a double:

A double Bacon Deluxe
It's added to the article. Geoff Who, me? 02:16, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Do you think it should get a DYK nom? There's sometimes a bit of a stink for envelope pushing, but a nom along the lines of: Did you know
... that the Bacon Deluxe sandwich from Wendy's can be bought as a "triple" with a "whopping" 1,140 calories and more saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium than anyone should eat in a single day?
or
...that the Bacon Deluxe sandwich from Wendy's topped a list of the five most unhealthful gourmet burgers sold by national fast-food restaurant chains? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:05, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and nommed it. The article needs some work, but it's a nice photo you got for it (even if the bacon isn't visible). ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:02, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes, that's the only thing that gave me pause about the photo - no visible bacon. But it is a good shot otherwise. If I can do better next time I happen on a Wendy's, I'll give it a shot. And, luck with the DYK daemons. Geoff Who, me? 04:05, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

The use of #file in this old edit of yours was mentioned at Wikipedia:Help desk#Section linking... within images? I guess you had clicked the File link at File:Pan frying sausages.jpg and then copied the file name with underscores and everything from the address bar without thinking about the #file part. RevZendo (talk) 23:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

I think you're referring to this edit, in which I reverted blanking of the article (removing all of its content) and recommended that the articles for deletion process be used instead. Since my revert, another eitor has proposed that the article be deleted, using that procedure. The discussion of the proposed deletion can be found here and I see you have posted a note in that discussion. That is the place to add comments to those of other editors who have weighed in on the proposal. As I write this, the opinions are running in favor of deletion. An administrator, which I am not, will make the decision whether to delete the article, based on consensus as outlined in the deletion discussion. Does this help you understand the process? Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way. Geoff Who, me? 15:42, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Anna's_Swedish_Thins_ginger_thins.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Anna's_Swedish_Thins_ginger_thins.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 11:42, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
