Rhondda

Thanks for picking up on the holes in the article, clear-eyed thinkers are needed to improve all articles. But on a personal note, can you be a member of WP DC and WP Marvel. I'm sure the rules of the universe require you to choose one or the other? What next? WP Dark Horse? FruitMonkey (talk) 23:12, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Ha! A good point. I do think I managed to avoid being a member of both WP Superman and WP Batman. Of course, that's mostly because WP Batman was moribund last time I checked. And if I had to go with a third comics company WP, I'd probably go with WP IDW!
Oh, and you're welcome. I don't remember how I stumbled on to the page, but I saw the small space Rhondda took up on the map and wondered, how big is that? Now I know. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 23:20, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Need opinions on photos

Hi. A disagreement has arisen over which of two photos would be better as the main Infobox image for the Ben Templesmith article. Can you participate in this discussion? Thanks, and Happy Holidays. :-) Nightscream (talk) 04:46, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Done. But, of course, you know that. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 19:45, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Realms of Despair

Hi Lejman, I tried to make the Realms of Despair page easier to understand by a non-MUDder. Would you mind checking it for accuracy? Thanks, GentlemanGhost (talk) 22:03, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi GentlemanGhost! You did a good job on the page. I made some changes. I removed the information that Barbarians were introduced to the game in 2005. Although true, I figured that was more information than needed really. It's mainly interesting for those interested in SMAUG builds I suppose.
Regarding the "Sects". When a player gets a home, he can pay a fee and create a sect. Once the Sect's name has been approved, that character becomes the leader of the sect and can induct (introduce) people into the Sect and outcast them from it. That's it :P
The page could better explain what players actually do on the game, the main things players do are "run" (kill mobiles, eg non-player characters), socialize (chat), "pkill" (already covered), quest (both imm held quests or in game quests), role-play (players enact a scene together, this is what nations focus on, some orders do it too, primarily Sanctus Irae), explore areas and level up characters. I'm not sure how extensive the page should be though.Lejman (talk) 03:34, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! The description probably shouldn't be too extensive. But it probably helps to clarify how a MUD works beyond just providing a link to the article. I think we've improved it to that end. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 19:43, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

New Years Message for WikiProject United States

With the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions or you can always post something on the projects talk page. Hi

Hadn't seen you in awhile, and just wanted to say hi : ) - jc37 21:18, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

CGC

First off thanks for sending me the message. I still have to disagree, regardless of what has been discussed the CGC page has been targeted by vandals with a questionable POV and agenda to the point where it is currently semi-protected and was fully protected until I requested an admin to unlock it. I am fine with any information that pertains to the subject that can be verified by the wikipedia definition of a reliable source. The source has again 2 issues, WP:primary reliable source. Bottom line the criticism section has been taggged for 4 years now, somewhat ridiculous. I would rather just scrap it, start over. Instead of haggling over a blog reference just wipe the section, start from scratch, follow wiki policies, get references, most importantly do it from a NPOV which is the biggest glaring problem. Too many people come to to forward an agenda instead of just contributing. --0pen$0urce (talk) 17:18, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

I think it's just one person who has an agenda. I certainly don't, and I'm sure you don't either. If anything, I've tried to bend over backwards to accommodate the critics of the company. When I first started editing the article, it was heavily lopsided with most of the article being criticism of the company without even adequately explaining what the company does. Rather than continue to engage in an edit war with the concerned party, I've tried to dial back the criticism section so that it fits Wikipedia's standards. Obviously, you think it merits further pruning (or wholesale hacking, even). For specifics, I'll head back over to the article's talk page. Cheers, GentlemanGhost (talk) 22:24, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Spider Woman 1978 Issue 9.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Spider Woman 1978 Issue 9.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:15, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Bah. You caught me sleeping on this one. I'll have to see if I can find it again and re-upload it, with a proper rationale (which were not required at the time when I originally uploaded it). --GentlemanGhost (talk) 23:52, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Don't defaultsort fictional characters if they are commony refererred to by their first name

--Niemti (talk) 17:45, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

  • Ok, I'll bite. What examples are you referring to? - jc37 23:17, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Morrigan Aensland and Elexis Sinclaire. We conversed more about it on his talk page. There is an exception to the standard "last name, first name" category sorting for people who are primarily known by one name. I'm not familiar with these characters (I was looking at a category as a whole and weeding out the outliers) so I'm perfectly content to take Niemti's word that they are better known by their first names. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 23:43, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Oh ok. - I did some searches. I find that it's about 50/50 for morrigan (partially due to having different surnames), but I'm not seeing this to be true of Elexis Sinclaire. So I think I will dispute Niemti's assertion. YMMV, of course : ) - jc37 00:19, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Ha. Dispute away. I'm not that concerned with category sorting, though I would like it to be as consistent as possible with the MoS. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 00:31, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
  • done : ) - jc37 00:36, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
And (off topic) if there are any discussions going on that you think I might be interested in, please let me know : ) - jc37 00:36, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Will do. There haven't been too many. I've only been doing light editing here and there. I weighed in on the Philip Roth controversy before it really blew up. And it seems that deletionists keep finding early images that I uploaded before the fair use rationale requirement (and explanation thereof) evolved to the point which it has today. I think that I've finally given them all updated, satisfactory FURs, but we'll see. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 00:44, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Do you mean this? I was unaware of it til I did a search just now... - jc37 00:52, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that's the one. What happened at the article was normal Wikipedia procedure. But Roth claims he received a letter from Wikipedia regarding the issue telling him he was not a reliable source on his own book, so either he's confused or else there was an off-Wikipedia interaction which took place. I presume that Roth is still in control of his faculties, so I assume it's the latter. It would have been good if the WikiMedia Foundation person who wrote to him explained what happened, but that point quickly got lost between the poles of "Wikipedia is evil" and "Wikipedia is infallible" comments. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 01:08, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
A discussion got lost in the miasm of POV pushing? say it ain't so! : ) - jc37 01:14, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
It's shocking, I know. I had to stop reading when the ALL CAPS started. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 01:16, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
While I'm chuckling here, I spose I should note that it's about the discussion, and not the unfortunate situation, obviously.
On a wholly different topic, I posted something at user talk:Jimbo Wales recently. If you wouldn't mind/have the time, I'd be curious as to your thoughts. - jc37 01:22, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Interesting. Can you really split it, though? Without BLPs, doesn't Wikipedia's usefulness plummet? Technically, isn't Wikia already a kind of a fork from Wikipedia? I'm about to get up from the computer, so I'll take my answer off the air. ;-)
For me, personally, I have moved on to other projects. I've edited more this month than in the past several. I don't plan on declaring myself "done" with Wikipedia and raising a big stink on the way out. (Insert Christian Bale soundbite here.) In fact, I still use Wikipedia all the time, even though I'm not editing it very much anymore. I'd like to say that my lack of presence here has absolutely nothing to do with the emotional toll of dealing with unpleasant people, but that's not really true. Hence why I often stick to non-contentious edits... like category sorting. Oh, damn. --GentlemanGhost (talk) 01:42, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
believe it or not, there is a LOT more to Wikipedia than BLP articles. To quote Schoolhouse Rock#Grammar Rock (Singing) "A noun is a person, place, or thing".
(Though I spose "thing" stands in for object and concept : )
So even if we leave out persons, the encyclopedia is still a huge, very viable project.
And the concerns I noted at UT:JW, aside, in my experience the most contentious pages are either ones related to ideologies/advocacy (pseudo-science, politics, etc), otherwise, it's primarily to do with persons. Whether it's the outside of Wikipedia issues like the Philip Roth example noted above, or things related to WP:EGRS, or promotional, or, or, or...
And Arbcom is fairly regularly coming up with "exceptions" to policy related to BLPs.
So to me, it just makes sense. Let's start a new wikimedia wiki where precise policies concerning persons can be done. Where templates and categories which deal with persons can exist, etc.
One of these days, I'll start a discussion on it. It's on my list of "stuff" to-do. (These things just take a lot of time, and energy. VERY draining. But something worth doing, is something worth doing, of course : )
And btw.... your second paragraph made me laugh : )
It's a shame that people can't discuss, and yet smile more often : ) - jc37 03:32, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Spanish-language band names

I saw your comment on the "the/The Beatles" poll about bands in other languages, especially Spanish. I'm with you on the Beatles, but I think we have to capitalize with foreign-language names, since "Los" isn't an English word. You could refer to "the Fabulosos Cadillacs," but that seems mangled. --BDD (talk) 17:34, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi there GentlemanGhost! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} ( Y) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

Interest in contributing to California related articles

Hello there, I saw your named on Wikiproject United States and that you have a particular interest in California. I'm new to Wikipedia editing and would like to contribute to this area as well. Do you have any suggestions for articles that need work? Or the types of contributions a newcomer could make? I lived and traveled throughout northern California for the most part, so that's the geographic area I'm most comfortable with/have interest in. But I'm of course willing to help out however I can with the project. Looking forward to hearing from you, Thanks! ArielEBarry (talk) 03:53, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Welcome and I'm glad to hear it! There's no page in particular that jumps out as being in need of attention. To my mind, the best thing is to work on articles which you have a personal interest in. Not that you can't branch out, but it will probably keep you motivated if you actually like and have some knowledge about the topic. You can also post on the California project's talk page and see if others have a special project they are working on. Often, a WikiProject group will select a single article for a monthly improvement drive. Also, you can always check out the stats page and take a look at the lists of Stub, Start, and C-Class articles and pick one to bring up to a higher caliber. A link to that is here. Have fun! --GentlemanGhost (converse) 00:38, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Overciting

Thank you for opening a dialogue. I've long observed that well-developed articles, such as Good Articles or Featured Articles, do not employ consecutive citations of the same source in the same paragraph (i.e.: a citation for each sentence), and I've always removed them, as far back as I can remember. As for what the community thinks, I think this is a pretty good gauge of it, and reflects my observations. Citing each sentence in a paragraph when it's the same source for the entire paragraph is redundant, and adhered to consistently, would lead to a nightmare of citation clutter. Disambiguation link notification for April 24

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Noel Langley, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page American (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I know the discussion has somehow devolved to that, but the proposal is not to prefer "character" (or anything else) to "comics", but to remove the seeming implication that "comics" should be the default at the expense of other appropriate, more general options. I've been pondering removing "character" from the actual proposal. Curly Turkey (gobble) 21:41, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Ah. I was trying to characterize the discussion beyond merely reporting that it was occurring. That's always dangerous. :-) If you want to clarify (maybe you have already? I haven't checked), you are welcome to. --GentlemanGhost (converse) 21:50, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
