BLP

Please do not add PII to BLP's as you did here when the subject's information, such as birth date have not been published by reliable sources. Please see this policy. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 13:32, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Edwardx You've now reinstated a BLP violation, specifically companies house, that contains personal information specifically against the policy I've linked above. Can you please explain that? CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 13:41, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
Chrissymad, your edit summary reads "what part of WP:BLP were you struggling to understand ?" If you scroll down to WP:BLPPRIMARY, Companies House can be used to use to "augment the secondary source". It is just the month and year of birth after all, not the full date of birth. Edwardx (talk) 13:51, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
That's not my edit summary and BLP policy specifically says Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person. Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 13:56, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
An oversight for which I apologise, it was Nick's edit summary. You are quoting the first paragraph of WP:BLPPRIMARY; I was quoting from the second, and as I have already stated CH does not provide the "date of birth", just the month and year. Edwardx (talk) 14:05, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
Edwardx You've completely missed the point - it should not be used, specifically, as per what I've highlighted. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 14:15, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
I was simply trying to make the point that primary sources can sometimes be used to support secondary ones - otherwise, what would be the point of the second paragraph in BLPPRIMARY? Edwardx (talk) 14:26, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
That's my edit summary, and Companies House cannot be used to "augment the secondary source". The BLP policy is explicit. Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses. You refer to a primary source being used to augment a secondary source, but that does not include any sources explicitly barred by the BLP policy, such as those which include personal details etc (Where primary-source material has been discussed by a reliable secondary source, it may be acceptable to rely on it to augment the secondary source, subject to the restrictions of this policy, no original research, and the other sourcing policies). Please do take time to read, at length, the BLP policy before making any further edits to BLPs, as it's quite clear your understanding of this policy is not sufficient. Nick (talk) 13:58, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
Nick, could you please give an example of where a primary source could be used to augment a secondary source for someone's year of birth? Edwardx (talk) 17:18, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
You could take their DoB from an autobiography, a personal website etc. Just not a site like Companies House which links to their home address etc. Nick (talk) 17:30, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Lukas Gage

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Lukas Gage, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Makro (talk) 16:41, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Only started it as a redirect. Notability looks quite marginal at present. Edwardx (talk) 17:28, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Lukas Gage requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Edwardx, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

Chad Rook redirect?

Edwardx, I was wondering why you created this redirect to War for the Planet of the Apes. As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the actor Chad Rook (assuming that's who you meant) on the article page, so it's effectively useless in helping to identify this person. Someone added a wikilink to a non-linked mention of Chad Rook today, and when I followed it, found it was confusing rather than helpful. Is the redirect no longer relevant? Thanks for any help you can give me. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:16, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Kudos for getting this through the arduous DYK maze. I consulted Katherine Maher about the controversy when she came to talk to us. She wanted to know how it would turn out and so I've alerted her on Twitter today and she loves it; no joke! Andrew D. (talk) 18:38, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
  • And thank you, Andrew D. and Katherine for tweeting about it. I may have started both articles way back in early January, but others were responsible for most of the writing and the DYK machinations. Here is another London street nom that you may find amusing, Oakley Street, Chelsea.

The 100 Skins of the Onion

Open Citations Month, with its eminently guessable hashtag, is upon us. We should be utterly grateful that in the past 12 months, so much data on which papers cite which other papers has been made open, and that Wikidata is playing its part in hosting it as "cites" statements. At the time of writing, there are 15.3M Wikidata items that can do that.

Pulling back to look at open access papers in the large, though, there is is less reason for celebration. Access in theory does not yet equate to practical access. A recent LSE IMPACT blogpost puts that issue down to "heterogeneity". A useful euphemism to save us from thinking that the whole concept doesn't fall into the realm of the oxymoron.

Some home truths: aggregation is not content management, if it falls short on reusability. The PDF file format is wedded to how humans read documents, not how machines ingest them. The salami-slicer is our friend in the current downloading of open access papers, but for a better metaphor, think about skinning an onion, laboriously, 100 times with diminishing returns. There are of the order of 100 major publisher sites hosting open access papers, and the predominant offer there is still a PDF.

Red onion cross section

From the discoverability angle, Wikidata's bibliographic resources combined with the SPARQL query are superior in principle, by far, to existing keyword searches run over papers. Open access content should be managed into consistent HTML, something that is currently strenuous. The good news, such as it is, would be that much of it is already in XML. The organisational problem of removing further skins from the onion, with sensible prioritisation, is certainly not insuperable. The CORE group (the bloggers in the LSE posting) has some answers, but actually not all that is needed for the text and data mining purposes they highlight. The long tail, or in other words the onion heart when it has become fiddly beyond patience to skin, does call for a pis aller. But the real knack is to do more between the XML and the heart.

Removal of "possible undisclosed payments" banner

Hi, Edward. I believe you know a little more about this subject than I do. I was wondering if you could offer any advice on how to have one of these banners removed from a page, and suggestions on how to make language less promotional and more neutral sounding.
