Ways to improve CuriosityStream edit

Hi, I'm Sulfurboy. Diamante55, thanks for creating CuriosityStream!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. .

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Sulfurboy (talk) 17:46, 17 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Surfurboy - I believe my edits for linking members of the CuriosityStream board were unfairly removed by editor Ronz. Would you help me to understand why my updates were deemed commercial in nature when they are in fact backed up by several articles? I don't understand why my work to link these individuals to their position on the board of CuriosityStream would be seen as commercial in nature. These are facts and show the individual's affiliation with lifelong learning.

Non-free rationale for File:CuriosityStream1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CuriosityStream1.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 18:25, 19 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of interest in Wikipedia edit

Hi Diamante55. I work on conflict of interest issues in Wikipedia. Based on your edits, you appear to have a relationship with the Curiosity Project and a focus on streaming media. This makes your account what we call a "single purpose account" (please see WP:SPA) I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and questions for you below. Please do read this carefully.

Hello, Diamante55. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Question edit

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work, and managing conflict of interest (COI) is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it.

As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review.

First steps of disclosure first.... while I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by out WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some relationship with Curiosity Project or its subsidiaries, directly or through some intermediate party? You can answer how ever you wish, but if there is a relationship with them, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), perhaps we can talk about the rest of COI management and about editing Wikipedia more generally, to give you some more orientation to how this place works. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 00:56, 27 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cleaning up your edits edit

Thanks for the note. I'm not clear that you understand the problems given that you've left it up to others to clean them up.

It might be overkill, but a fairly good case can be made to remove all your remaining contributions to Wikipedia. In the cases I've examined so far, they appear overly promotional and poorly sourced. I've been removing them outright, looking for something that might be appropriate to keep. I've found that others are doing the same. --Ronz (talk) 14:26, 28 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I went through all your edits, removing almost all of them as being highly promotional for CuriosityStream and John Hendricks, but trivial to the topic of the actual articles. I didn't touch Esmeralda Negron, which looks pretty good for a BLP article. --Ronz (talk) 14:41, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
i can't disagree with what you've done there Ronz. tactically, i tend to try to engage in dialogue before moving on the actual content front as that can cause emotional upset that gets in the way of talking, but since this user has not logged in four days and may well be gone (and things fall through the cracks if too much time goes by) i think what you've done is great. thanks for being on this! Jytdog (talk) 14:53, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was hoping to hear from Diamante55, and if we do we can always revisit everything. --Ronz (talk) 15:53, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Responding to your comment edit

Regarding [1]: First, have you reviewed WP:COI?

Regarding [2]: I hope we can agree that it's rather blatant soapboxing.

Since you didn't specify, I'm guessing you might mean all your edits like [3]. I remove them because they are trivial in the context of the subjects of the articles. That alone suffices for removal from a WP:BLP in my opinion. Of course, the content is highly promotional for CuriosityStream and Hendricks, which I see you are still attempting to promote in the new article submissions mentioned above. --Ronz (talk) 20:11, 15 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

File copyright problem with File:Esmeralda Negron.png edit

Thank you for uploading File:Esmeralda Negron.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:40, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
