Thoroughbred

Hello. Thanks for querying my action over the term 'thoroughbred'. According to the international edition of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary, the initial T of 'Thoroughbred is capitalised only when the following conditions apply:

• The word is a proper noun (NOT an adjective)
• The referent is "A horse whose ancestry is recorded in the English Stud Book, and which is therefore descended from one of three Eastern sires: the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian, or the Godolphin".

Sole Power

I actually edit-conflicted with you as I was adding the result at exactly the same time! I haven't started a SP article but he has now won 2 G1 races which is usually my trigger point. Will be up within a week. Kingsgate Native is overdue as well. Tom Simpson

Are you still up for copy-editing the article? I've requested one at WP:GOCE, but I'm not sure when that'll happen. I've nominated it for GA review prematurely, only because my experience is that it can take months to be picked up. All I need to do is expand the doping and riding style sections, maybe add some more to personal life. I split the death section off to Death of Tom Simpson, which gained GA status yesterday. Want to get that up to FA so it could do with a look over. I think the only thing missing from it is a reaction section. Any ideas on both will be very welcome. Hope you can help. Certainly - its a great article already and should be well worth GA itself in due course. Will also have a look at the Death article and see if I can add anything there. It's a matter of degree. If there are one or two small things preventing approval, such as a missing QPQ, or a question that needs to be answered, then Symbol question.svg is appropriate. (This could also be used for an uninteresting hook.) The Symbol possible vote.svg is used when there are more extensive or serious issues remaining such as close paraphrasing, neutrality or BLP issues, an unsourced hook, poor prose or stuctural problems, or a number of general issues to be worked. If there are issues that seem to be intractable or extremely serious—even if they might be solvable—the Symbol delete vote.svg symbol can be used instead of Symbol possible vote.svg to show that the problems are extremely serious, though it's more commonly used for issues that can't be solved, like a nomination that was submitted too late, needs to be 5x expanded but wasn't close and would needs tens of thousands of new characters, or has extensive copyvios.

Champion Hurdle

The SMARTFORM database that I use is a bit inconsistent regarding the colours of JP McManus. Typically in Ireland and around 2008/2009 the colours are described as "orange hoops" whereas more recently it is invariably "yellow hoops". The hoops at Cheltenham last week looked pretty yellow, so I am happy to standardise on that if you think that is best. (JockeyColours (talk) 22:05, 19 March 2014 (UTC))

Keep on fiddling. When you were last on a wikibreak I realised just how valuable you are to the project. According to the RP, Seamus Mullins trains at "Wilsford-cum-Lake, Wiltshire", which sounds as GB as its possible to be without voting for UKIP whilst singing "Jerusalem" and having a Union Jack tattooed on a prominent body-part. However, RP lists trainers by their current base, and he may well have been in Ireland in 2007. I will look it up.19:45, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

After lengthy discussions with Montanabw I have split the 1-2-3 images into 3 separate owner images formatterd using the Wikipedia multiple image syntax. I have now upgraded all of the imeages on the Cheltenham Race pages, but not touched the individual year pages for Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup etc. You may want to take the new format, as this is how I am planning to do them in future. Alternatively I have added some image collections for ALL runners to some of the Talk pages e.g. Champion Hurdle 2014 so you may want to use them instead. Let me know what works best for you. FranceGalop references

Do you know the origins of the FranceGalop references on pages such as Prix Ganay. They don't work for me, require a login, so I am wondering if there is something special I need to do, or whether the FG website has recently been protected? Sorry, no, I don't know - they were put in by Zafonic who did a massive amount of work setting up the European pattern race pages. Have added France Galop and Racing Post references to Grand Prix d'Automne. It's painful but possible to extract the refs from France-Galop - will need to find a better way if I'm going to do this regularly! I have found a new syntax for the France-Galop URLs which (for now) bypasses the userid/password page. I have updated the France-Galop template accordingly and the links now work - hope it lasts! I much prefer the Racing Post layout, but it seems that France-Galop have details of French races from 1979-1987 that are missing on RP, so worth using for that period. Great, isn't it? I had the update for the David Nicholson Hurdle completed with Annie Power as the winner and was all set to hit save page as she pulled clear at the last when she fell like a sack of spuds. 2015 Epsom Derby

I am going to do some quick articles on the leading contenders. Elm Park and Epicuris are the only G1 winners, apart from Gleneagles who we have been repeatedly assured will not run but has been left in the field for some strange reason hmmm. Golden Horn is also worth an article as he looks pretty certain to go off favourite although I agree with his owner that his pedigree suggests he won't stay. Gleneagles a bit like New Approach maybe, left in "by mistake"? But he does look nothing but a miler really. Can understand why they have decided on Epsom for Golden Horn, despite the doubts re pedigree - even owners of Oppenheimer's type don't often get a live crack at THE Derby. I'm hopeful of getting the 2015 race article onto ITN within a day of two, its ITN/R which means it can get on there if its in decent shape, plenty of prose, well-refd etc, and I think it has a good chance. --Bcp67 (talk) 21:35, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

I think the article is looking very good. All credit to you. I was tempted to do mini-articles on some of the other contenders but I don't want to stuck with half a dozen stubs which would need regular updating. I'll have a dummy article in a sandbox ready to be customised if the winner isn't Golden Horn, Elm Park or Epicuris. Gosden felt the same about Nathaniel a few years ago. Anyway... if you won't be around to update the page on the day I thought I would add a "Full result" infobox as well as a description of the race. I was going to use the same infobox in previous years but I was wondering if you would prefer a modified version of the "Race card" infobox already in the article. I will probably be rooting for Success Days: firstly, its a "true underdog story" and secondly, given his ownership, a Derby win is the only thing that can prevent a trip to the vets for intimate surgery followed by a plane ride to Hong Kong. Tigerboy1966  21:36, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Haha,yes. I think the full result format from previous years would work OK and be consistent with the other Derby articles - the SP can come out of the racecard, its more relevant to the result than the card. Using the same result format would mean jockeys and trainers being listed twice, but that's no great issue really. Up to you, no problem with how it looks in the end as long as the details are in there. I might put the usual sections in today and comment them out, to save a bit of time later on. I'll be an interested tv watched rather than a gambler today, I hardly bet now and given my preference for the winter game I'll look at this as the best Triumph Hurdle trial!!! --Bcp67 (talk) 06:44, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

1984 Derby

Well done for digging out that book. Timeform's annual for 1984 doesn't have the usual results section. I managed to find most of the jockeys from newspaper articles (but not George Duffield). Thank you. Recovered from the loft! Good back actually, the forerunner of the Ladbrokes Pocket Companions but in a bigger format, I also have the 1986 and 1987 editions. There is some curiousity though as it shows Northern Fred last rather than Cataldi and the beaten distances don't seem to include all 16 places. 1980 Epsom Derby

I have got a sandbox article here User:Tigerboy1966/sandbox12, please take a look. I am struggling to complete the finishing order and the youtube videos are no help as they are very poor quality and most of the horses finished in a heap. Well done on beating me to the punch on the July Cup yesterday, I had my "Quiet Reflection wins" update all ready to go at the click of the mouse. John Jackett Falmouth & Leicester

Hi there, thanks for your thoughts on my edits to the 1907 & 09 Home Nations championship regarding John Jackett. At such a removed time it is difficult to say exactly where he should be recorded as playing. At the time club membership was not exclusive like it is now, he was definitely a member of Leicester and playing regularly (24 games out of 35 games he was available for in the 08/09 season) but might have also been a playing member of Falmouth as there weekends "blank" between Leicester and England games, likely these were Cornwall and trial games but I can't be certain or prove that. Personally I would say we have a reliable source showing him regularly playing for Leicester and a source showing him as a member of Falmouth but no source showing how often he played for Falmouth. I don't mind the proposed change to (Falmouth/Leicester) but personally don't think it is an accurate reflection of where he was a playing member at the time.Skeene88 (talk) 11:23, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

2017 Bill Beaumont Cup

Hi - I have created a page for the 2017 Bill Beaumount Cup (tier 1) and will create pages for the other two tiers this week. The structure the RFU is introducing is very confusing with only the promotion/relegation over 2 years making any sense to me. Also, they have eliminated the Lancashire v Yorkshire fixture this season which was one of the best attended of recent years. Charlie Trigg

Hi, thanks for your help in tidying up the page which I started recently. The subject is a distant cousin of my late grandmother, but I feel I am suitably distanced from the subject as he died almost 30 years before I was born. I discovered the family link only recently, and was disappointed not to be able to find a Wikipedia entry for him... so, I thought, why not start one?!

I was wondering whether you had any thoughts on how I could improve this article, beyond trying to source information on the numbers of winners ridden per year during his career, and perhaps his annual positions in the lists of leading jockeys. That's a nice connection for you, and I can't see any conflict of interest there with a distant relative who died many years ago. I hadn't heard of Charlie Trigg before I saw you link to the Epsom Oaks article - he was a Classic-winning jockey anyway, and that's something to be proud of. I did look in some reference books I have but found nothing, sadly. Might be difficult to source those sorts of information about winners ridden from the early 20th century too, records weren't that well kept I think and as you mentioned the Champion Jockey title itself was unofficial. It's a decent article which you've created, gives a picture of Charlie and his life and career - hope you can find some more. Maybe online newspaper archives might provide something? 2017 Epsom Derby

Do you have any plans on this article to match your epic effort on the 2016 edition? As it looks like we might well have a race without any previous G1 winners I am hemming and hawing about doing an article for any of the leading contenders. Cliffs of Moher looks like being Coolmore's chosen one and the British seem to have gone dippy over Cracksman on the grounds that he represents the Golden Horn team and has a cool-sounding name. I will be hoping that Permian takes the Derby for the North and Dubai Thunder (another cool name) might be anything but honestly, none of these horses looks NOTABLE atm. On a slightly different matter, do you know if pages of a racecourse racecard are subject to copyright restrictions. Linking in the Gay Spartan article looks good, I did a small copyedit for a bit of spacing after full stops and commas etc. I reckon that you are right about copyright and that you can't show them here - photos I am not sure about. I think in racecards there is usually some line about not publishing them without permission of the course, but there are plenty of racehorse photos on wikipedia articles which were taken at the races and have been uploaded, so I'd go ahead with those if I were you. Thanks. I played around with diffent things including "Div Col" but it seems to work only for columns. The Jockey win list is a table which has three distinct columns and each requires alignment. Apparently a table can't be broken like "Div Col" does. I ended up creating something that is almost 100% and, to me, looks good. I just moved that Sir Harry to Sir Harry (British horse) but it didn't achieve what I wanted as a search for Sir Harry redirects to the Brit horse. Hi Stretchrunner, you could take the redirect page for Sir Harry, and make into a disambiguation (dab) page with links to both the articles. Track Record

Thank you - yes, weather very much a factor I think - at Newmarket on Saturday you could see from the tv pictures it was pretty fast, the horses were kicking dust up. On another day after a week of rain, there would be a lot of cut in the ground. Timeform always reckons that the going is the single biggest factor affecting a horse's ability to produce it's best form. Undulations on courses make a big difference too - you couldn't compare Newmarket's mile course (for example) with York's much flatter straight. From what I've seen of North American racing on tv and live, the tracks are invariably flat and fairly consistent in surface, unless you get a sloppy track. Nothing against either way of racing, it's what makes it interesting! Pace definitely a factor too, we're used to seeing US races where the field gets on with it right from the start. In Britain and Ireland it tends to be all done inside the last couple of furlongs and in France even more so - they run their races much slower for most of the way than we do. --Bcp67 (talk) 17:01, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Josh Gray

Hi Bcp67 - I drafted my first article on Josh Gray (rugby union) and have learnt a great deal from a couple of editors to help me write articles. One final bit of learning for me is I beleive you created the Disambiguation as there are other Josh Gray's but what i dont understand is the other two gray's come up in a wiki search with their sport in brackets but the page josh gray (rugby union) doesn't even if i type it in full in the search. A Josh Gray wiki page comes up and takes you to your Disambiguation page and then you can select the article for josh gray (rugby union). Should josh gray (rugby union) come up straight away like the other two? Do i need to add something in the article code for it to do so or is it something else? Yes - if you create an article with a disambig'd title, you'll always need to do something else to lead readers to that article, either an entry on a dab page or a hatnote if there is a single primary topic - see my edit to Jamie Hill for an example. To answer your question, I have found that sometimes when you create a new article it doesn't come up in the search box for a while, but I can see it does now - just allow a bit of time. Another thought - if you leave a message on someone's talk page, please leave a section heading - there is a tab at the top you can use or you can do it manually. Hope you have a long and happy editing career and feel free to ask questions here, or you can also go to the Rugby Union project talk page for help from the wider rugby community. Hi User:Nearlyevil665, a bit of a lazy unsourced edit by me, sorry! Gleeson was coach around 77 to 78 - he coached the 1978 Grand Slam tour but fell ill the following year I believe. Eric Watson succeeded him and the In Memoriam article here [5] for Watson gives some info - " Eric Watson who served in 1979-80 died on March 25 while the man who replaced him for the 1981-82 seasons Peter Burke, died on October 2. Watson, from Otago, took over the coaching when his predecessor Jack Gleeson fell ill and while the All Blacks had some rocky experiences, including losing the Bledisloe Cup in 1979, he took the side to Wales for the centenary tour and saw the All Blacks claim an outstanding 23-3 win over their old rivals." while this article mentions his death [6] "The Gleeson-Mourie partnership guided the All Blacks to the first Grand Slam of Britain and Ireland in 1978, before Gleeson had to step down when he was diagnosed with cancer, which would tragically see him die in November 1979."
