Flags in squad lists

IOC Templates

I have created a template called "IOC games" that will get the games described either as ""XXXX Summer/Winter" or XXXX Summer/Winter Olympics." This, will let me use PAGENAME (I think) to create a consistent link template for all of the main pages. I have created the doc page as well. Before I move it to the template namespace, could you take a quick look to make sure there isn't anything obviously wrong or in violation of some rule that I don't know of? The template is currently at User:Donlammers/templates/IOC games. Thanks.

Also, although I could create one pretty quickly now, I am currently thinking that we don't need a version specific to the media (to create a separate "media" link under the main page link), since the media is front and center on the main IOC page for each Olympiad anyway.Donlammers (talk) 12:38, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and moved the IOC games template and documentation out to the template namespace. You can see the results in the 1964 Summer Olympics article. When I have a couple of hours I will go back and insert it into the other games main pages (this should be just a copy and paste of the same template over and over). Thanks for the help. I will post any further communications on this and the IOC medals template in their talk pages.

I am debating whether an "IOC external links" template (just one template for the standard external links) is worth it or not. For now all that would be in it would be the "commonscat" template and the IOC games template, but it might be worth adding your IOC medals template, and we may find other things in the future. It would be pretty easy to modify the IOC medals template so that it took the page name for the games just like the IOC games template.Donlammers (talk) 16:19, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

You didn't say you needed an urgent reply. I think you are better off going to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring instead of singling me out as someone who could help—especially since I have edited the article recently and could be considered involved. I did take another look at the article yesterday, but hadn't figured out what I wanted to do. But after your message here, I don't really feel like doing anything. Thank you for your reply, which would have been welcome had it been to my initial message. I am surprised you were unable to see the problem on the article. If you are unable see that an editor is gaming the system: by exhausting other users into dropping the issue; taking no notice of consensus; and being in breach of 3RR (i.e. edit warring), then you may be interested in WP:CDA, which is a proposal to enable the Wikipedia community to remove the admin tools from existing administrators who have lost the confidence of the community. Further, if you honestly think that my message insulted you, I strongly reccomend that you take it WP:AN/I, where I will undoubtedly receive the appropriate punishment (that is, if you can find the motivation). I saw the problem; I was still contemplating how to proceed—because I am involved in the dispute. You might be surprised that there are admins who intentionally stay away from the drama-whore infested waters of ANI, so your thinly veiled insults shall remain on this talk page. I apologise. You are right to think that I misread/misunderstood your reply, in that I read it as you were unable to see the problem on the article, rather than what you had said i.e. you hadn't figured out what you wanted to do. Consequently, most of my post was unwarranted. My original annoyance was due to the fact that you had replied to the cause of the problem I highlighted to you, rather than to my message, which seemed to have been ignored. Ok then, no worries. To me your message said that I was discourteous and classless, which I perceived as insults. That was only 10 hours after your first message, and I was in the middle of some other work (both on- and off-wiki), so it also felt like a rather unfair judgement. But it looks like we can call that water under the bridge now, so thanks for your last message. As for the article, there are so many changes, and that is not an area of expertise to me, so I will probably stay away. The only thing I know I object to is the use of the tricolour to represent Ireland (the island) vs. Ireland (the nation). I would prefer the flags be removed (and I said so in the RfC), but if they stay, then my quick-fix wikicode replacement of {{flag|Ireland}} is acceptable. If you are still concerned about behavioural issues of certain editors on that page, then I still think Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring might be the best course of action. Opinion of logo

This relates to Template_talk:Current_sport-related but is slightly different . Would you say the logo in the infobox on Magners_League is on the main space and also in the main space? Gnevin (talk) 00:28, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

I would think that is part of the Wikipedia user interface (navigation) of that page, rather than content, despite its location inside the infobox. I would draw a parallel to the little icon inside the Celtic League Logo image, that is used to enlarge the image. It isn't used on any pages where a flag template is used to render it, or it appears in the common icon size, so I think my work is done. It remains present on about a thousand mainspace articles, almost all as an infobox placeholder (similar to the usage of File:Replace this image male.svg for biographic articles). I think there is some consensus to remove people placeholder images from bio articles, but many still exist. I have never seen a discussion about other types of placeholders (incl. flags) so it would probably be a bold edit to remove them. If you feel like taking on this task, there are some other placeholders still in use:

• File:No flag.svg
• File:Missing flag.png
• File:Vlag ontbreekt.svg

I've had a look at the source for {{Infobox Former Country}} and was totally lost, do you think you could fix it so the blank flag doesn't appear as a white flag like here?Gnevin (talk) 18:45, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

It's not white, it's transparent (with a border). That is intentional, because you can click on the (unlabelled) flag to get to the article. Without the border, it is not clear that you can click on that space to navigate anywhere. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:54, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

That works too, but it's such a tiny user interface element. There was a request to make this template work the way it does now; I would like to see some dicussion there before making any changes to something different. Flag /doc pages

Do you think we should develop another template instead of {{documentation subpage}} for use on /doc pages which are for categories and interwikis only? The return of Russian nationalists! [1] Oh boy. Do you think we should put together a FAQ or something that we can point them towards, though I doubt it will do any good. This will be my third Games as a Wikipedia editor, and the previous experience has me thinking that the easiest approach is to "weather the storm" of nationalism and don't create a big dispute. These editors will move on to something else a week or two after the Games have ended, and we can clean things up properly then. Lethbridge flag

Hi there,

I see that you have deleted "Template:Country data Lethbridge" citing WP:WPFT, does that mean Template:Country data Calgary should be deleted too? I assumed it was alright to create the Lethbridge template since the flag file's rights did not say it was non-free, and the Calgary template has wide usage, I am seeing a mixed standard for what you called consensus. 117Avenue (talk) 00:26, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Well, that one is used on hundreds of neighborhood articles, so there is consensus to keep it for that, I suppose. I'd be happy to restore the Lethbridge one if you plan to use it on similar articles, so let me know. But it looked like you only needed a flag template for that single election article, and you can use the flag_image parameter of {{Infobox election}} to accomplish the same thing, without having to extend the already-huge flag template system. HOL template for FlagIOC?

Andrwsc, do you know if a FlagIOC template is in the works for "HOL" ("Holland"), the code and name used by the Netherlands prior to 1992 Olympics? I keep substituting "NED" in with the 1988 Olympics results I'm doing at the moment. But it would be nice if it could be accurate (the country display on the page also says "Netherlands" instead of "Holland"). Thoughts? Hooperswim (talk) 13:40, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

We had a discussion about that on the WikiProject page some time ago, and the consensus was to use NED consistently for all years. Agreed. I have not seen anything yet that explicitly states 82 nations, however. I counted 82 during the opening ceremonies broadcast (as I was double-checking the flag bearers article), but that's not a reference! Weighted templates

The templates {{WeightedMedalTable}} and {{WeightedMedalRow}} were created by User:Crissov for use on the 2010 Winter Olympics medal table, personally I think they aren't any use and need deleting but I'd like a second opinion before nominating them. No, definitely not. There are news articles out there for weighted medal counts, but they are not mainstream views and would certainly represent an undue weight for that method of tabulation. Olympic Medal Table

I moved the source that says that USA Today used the gold-first for one olympics to be with the other sources which said that the US media "primarily" (which clearly means not always) uses the total-medal table. The other source accuses the US of a mass conspiracy, so that is the one I thought was unnecessary.

I removed the clause that says "and was used in the official report of the most recent Games hosted by the United States, 2002 Salt Lake City" for a few reasons:

1. The article already clearly says that the US doesn't always use the total medal table.

2. The article doesn't need to list every instance of a US-related entitity which used the gold-first table.

3. The cited report is made to the IOC. It does not represent the US or the US media. As the IOC uses the gold-first table, it makes sense the the OC on a games in the US would as well. Using this to support the claim that the US uses the gold-first table makes about as much sense as using it to say that the US uses French and English in its documents. The OC followed the IOC protocols...that's it.

Malaya

I know there's a lot of controversy regarding other nations (Germany, Russia/USSR, Yugoslavia/Serbia), but there's absolutely no controversy that Malaya is the natural predecessor of Malaysia. Whether their territories change at the same time as the name change has absoultey no bearing. Come to think of this, neither a name change nor a territory change will prompt you to say that the two entities are "different", so why would a combination of both changes automatically means the two entities are "different"? Great Britain at the 1980 Summer Paralympics

The infobox on the article Great Britain at the 1980 Summer Paralympics displays the Olympic flag and not the flag of the UK, I guess this is because at the 1980 Olympics the GB team used the Olympic flag and the paralympic infobox was based on the Olympic infobox. As the paralympics weren't held in Moscow and there wasn't a boycott I assume the UK flag was used and the template needs correcting but i'm not sure how to go about it, if you could take a look it'd be appreciated. Argh, that's a mess to fix. Basically, the IPC templates have "piggybacked" onto the IOC templates and assume the same flags etc. But the different handling of TPE provides a clue. You need to create Template:Country flag IPC alias GBR and use it in templates like {{Infobox Country Paralympics}} and {{flagIPC}}. The same will need to be done for AUS, BEL, DEN, FRA, IRL, ITA, LUX, NED, ESP, and SUI. Good luck! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:00, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I've created the GBR template but can't see how to include it without replacing every IOC flag template with an IPC one, to be honest i've got no real experience with templates so maybe it'd be best leaving a request for it to be changed at WT:OLY rather than breaking things on my own, i'll also ask user:jwillbur who seems to have worked on all these templates to take a look - Basement12 (T.C) 10:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed the problem with the 1980 flags when I first created the templates, but wasn't sure how best to fix it so I put it off till later. I just modified Template:Infobox Country Paralympics to use {{flagicon}} instead of the IOC flag alias templates for 1980. Not sure if this is the best way to go about it, but it works. Similar changes will be needed on Template:FlagIPC and Template:FlagIPCathlete. I don't have time to do them now but I can work on it tomorrow. — jwillbur 15:34, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Eh, it turned out to be easier to create new "Country flag IPC alias X" templates for each of the countries that used the Olympic flag in 1980. Should be fixed now. List of Olympic medalists in curling

Hi, I was wondering if you could provide some clarification for the 1924 medalists. The sources I've read vary greatly as to who received medals. Sports reference says it was a team of four from Britain, but the IOC lists eight and excludes one of the men listed at SR. Meanwhile, some sources say that Sweden won two silver medals, but SR and the IOC say they won one. -- Scorpion⁰⁴²² 21:46, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I added a note for Britain [2] However, I could not find a source that even mentioned the possiblity that Sweden received two silvers. The only mention (that I found) is the wikipedia entry on the 1924 tournament: Curling at the 1924 Winter Olympics. Well, one of the references from the 1924 page (http://soudogcurling.tripod.com/Olympics/1924.htm) indicates that. But I'm not sure that is a reliable source. The official report shows a total of 19 actual participants on three teams (4 FRA, 7 GBR, 8 SWE) out of 30 entries (6 FRA, 8 GBR, 8 SWE, 8 SUI) on tables of page 666 of the PDF file. Starting at page 709 are the actual results, and the report is fairly clear that GBR got gold, SWE silver, and FRA bronze. There were only 3 matches played (round-robin) and my guess is that there were four different Swedes who played against the British versus those who played against the French. But it certainly looks like one team medal and not two. If you clean up the 1924 curling page, that would help! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:07, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I have noticed you are quite active int he Olympic and Paralympic articles and I was wondering if I could get your help. As you have pointed out before "Every two years like clockwork"[3] the All-time Olympic Games medal table gets questions about Germany's medal count. Ah, ok! I'm not sure that we had an explicit discussion that led to a conclusion. If you look through the talk page archives, there are multiple threads where someone (usually German) objects to the current format, which is then defended by other editors (often me...). Olympics infoboxes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears all the Olympics by country infobox templates have a very similar format, links, image use, etc. Have you considered possibly abstracting them into a single {{Infobox Olympics country}}? Um, that's the point. They already are. I designed {{Infobox Country Olympics}} to be the meta-template used to ensure common layout etc., and then each country infobox adds a layer of country-specific details (common for all articles for that country) so that each specific instance only has to specify the per-Games parameters. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:17, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

On a related theme to the above are you aware of any previous discussion(s) that resulted in a consensus for all articles of the type "Nation at the year Olympics" being deemed notable for inclusion in Wikipedia? WP:ATHLETE says any athlete who has competed is automatically eligible for an article, meaning that any reliable source showing they competed is good enough as a reference for notability (even a source produced by the IOC). We had a debate about three years ago (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sudan at the 1968 Summer Olympics) that showed consensus for this type of article, but the issue then was more about the usefulness (or not) of stub-class pages, and not a debate about overall notability. Thanks. I think in the short term the issue has been solved, though that page would have been useful if not. I think the new WP:NSPORT guidelines currently being drawn up would be an opportunity to formalise the policy of having by nation, by sport and by event articles. Flandrensis

You have removed Flandrensis from the List of micronations. Nothing. I used Template:noflag to keep the alignment consistent, but you reverted that. Also note that you reverted my change of {{flagicon|UK}} [[United Kingdom]] to the simpler and superior {{flag|United Kingdom}}, but I'm not sure why. You claim "consistent font" in the edit summary, but I have no idea what that means. Putting aside your sarcasm for the moment, I'd ask you what flag could be placed there? I see no alternatives; the flag of the Commonwealth of Nations is copyrighted and there is no obvious substitute. This is a similar situation to the flag of NATO. Actually, they are indeed mis-cited. You wrote Moreover, at the IOC's Session in Paris, in 1901, the IOC made it clear that the second Olympic Games would be held in Athens in 1906. with a reference of Journal of Olympic History, Special Issue - December 2008, The Official Publication of the International Society of Olympic Historians, p. 2, foreword by Karl Lennartz, Tony Bijkerk and Volker Kluge. Sailing at the ....

Hi,

I see your changes at the Finn and think I understand want to go. I have however three issues with the {{SailingAt1972SummerOlympics}} template:

• It does not show the class signs (minor issue)
• It shows a windsurfer. This is hardly usable before 1988 and even from that date it is very specialized. The Olympic rings could be a suggestion. (mayor issue)
• I would like to see it horizontal at the bottom of the page. (nice to have) Something like the {{Menu}} template.

The footnotes for the crossout is a better solution.

We have a long consensus at WP:WikiProject Olympics for the vertical navbox format and style. You'd have to bring it up there to change to something different. As for the windsurfer icon, I totally agree. The pictogram we use (at File:Sailing pictogram.svg) was originally created by User:Parutakupiu, and he did a wonderful job of making all Olympic sport icons similar in style. He is still active, and I think he would not object to a request to make something less anachronistic. Could you explain to him what you'd like, something that can be generically used on all Olympic sailing articles past-present? I'm guessing it would be a single sailor dinghy, perhaps. You'd want something with the "stick man" to have consistent style, and not just a boat by itself, I think. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:34, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

I just left a message for Parutakupiu. I don't think there is a rush; we've had that icon for a couple of years, so a few more days to change is fine. I don't think the Finn sign image makes sense as a table heading, and it wouldn't pass the manual of style guidelines. It also stretches the width of the first column, making the table wider unnecessarily. I removed them because they don't align with the Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates guidelines. A navbox should only be placed on articles in the same series or category. For example {{OlympicSports}} is only located on the Archery at the Olympics, Sailing at the Olympics, etc. top-level sport articles, not on every per-event page beneath that. {{Olympic Games Sailing}} is only placed on the Sailing at the 1900 Summer Olympics .. Sailing at the 2008 Summer Olympics articles, also not on every per-event page underneath that. And most importantly, {{Olympic class sailboats}} should only appear on the pages about the boat classes themselves (e.g. Finn (dinghy)). The History of the Finn as class is interrelated, like most of the Olympic classes, with the Sailing and reults of the Olympics as well to the history of the Olympic classes themself as boat. For multiple-person boats, I think you want to keep all the crew together in one table cell. (This is what we've done for many other Olympic sports with "small teams", such as rowing and some fencing and cycling events.) Perhaps something like:

If you think it is important to highlight the helmsman, perhaps add another symbol before or after the name. (Perhaps commons:File:Captain sports.svg...?) Don't forget to explain all the image symbols in a table legend, especially if you use the male/female symbols for open class events. (I think the male/female symbols should not appear on any men-only or women-only event pages, as they would be redundant.) Lastly, be sure to use {{Gold01}} instead of {{GoldMedal}}, as we prefer the legible numbers instead of tiny graphics, for WP:ACCESSIBILITY reasons. Hi, I have looked at rowing, soccer and Bobsledge. Non of them list the specific roles. I do not think this is a right thing for sailing. Hi, I think that Sailing at the 1972 Summer Olympics is much improved in the last couple of day's! Maybe a few percentages can be gained but that will cost too much time in relation with wat still has to be done. Therefore I will use 1972 as the boilerplate for the more regulair Olympics. I will also try to get 1900 as close as possibe to the boilerplate, but this one need, with some other early Olympics, some small differences. Tomorrow I start with 1908 and work my way up.

Moreover, That leaves us with the discussion about the difficult years. At this moment I will not touch 04, 16, 40 and 44 since there are no results there. But in the future I like to spent some time with you about that issue, since there are quit a few things to mention here. Some of the decision then taken had influence on Sailing in general and Olympic Sailing in special. So for the moment I propose not to discuss them and I like to plee to let, in the light of the above, 1896 live for the moment till we move to the difficult years discussion.

So I will take away the {{Underconstruction}} tags on 1972.... and later today 1900.... to make them a part of the Wiki dynamics again.

Sailing at the 1900 Summer Olympics

Hi,

I't me again. I saw the changes on this article. Altough I like the cooperation tonight I do not agree on a few changes you made:

• Your information about the number of countries is not correct. Mixed teams or other ZZX teams are always concideres as a separate country (hence ZZX of 1992 for the former CCCP teams) Therefore there are 7 countries.
• The number of participants are arbitrary and no one knows the real thing anymore. So 177 is fine for me. But I'm missing the statistics table. This is a table I like to build up during my actions on the next Olympics. Here you can see the changes the sport made over the years. In 1900 it is almost empty but it will ve complete when I reach 2008/2012. I like therefore to put ik back or do you have a better alternative?
• Is the style guide the only reason to take out the info about the venue's. A bit more background (location on the map, how does ik look) would not harm.

Yes, I suppose the mixed team complicates things. Explanatory footnotes are best. But note that "ZZX" was an artificial after-the-fact construct for the 1896–1904 results only. The 1992 Unified team is known as "EUN".

The number of competitors at these Games is a bit of a mystery, so I think the best bet might be to explain the situation using the available reliable sources we have, even if they disagree a bit. e.g. Mallon says X, De Wael says Y, etc.

As for the statistics tables, this is great information, but not for this article. We put these summary statistics on the top-level sport pages, in this case Sailing at the Summer Olympics. But it should only be on that page, and not duplicated for the 24 individual per-Games pages for sailing.

As for the venues, I think it is inappropriate to put an infobox in the article for each of them, and certainly irrelevant to show the flag and the coat of arms for the location. The one useful bit of information you had was the geo coordinates, but I think that can be placed in the infobox, which I have just done. (Good idea, I don't think we've done that before!) If the contemporary photos are useful, they could be placed as normal thumbnail images; they don't need to be in an infobox.

Lastly, I am also happy with the cooperative edits we've been doing. I was afraid it might look like I was being disrespectful of your good work by making so many changes, but I'm actually quite pleased we have somebody working to improve the Olympic articles for an entire sport! I just want to make sure those edits are consistent with what we've been doing on all the other Olympic articles in the past few years. Mass speedy deletion

Hello again. I thought I should let you know that User:Sfan00 IMG has performed a mass speedy deletion nomination of files that are on the commons, but should be here on Wikipedia, including two that we have previously talk about, File:Flag of Calgary, Alberta.svg and File:Flag of Lethbridge.svg. FSM template

Hey mate! I have a request concerning the {{Country data Federated States of Micronesia}} template. I'm not familiar with the workings behind country data templates, so I apologise in advance. At present, the shortname alias "Micronesia" is used; a redirect is also at {{Country data Micronesia}}. I'd like to see these removed. It's not a common name for the country; certainly not used in any official documents (either from the domestic government, foreign governments, or international bodies). According to reputable sources, the country does not have a short-form name: the ISO, the FCO, the USCIA, the USBGN, the UNGEGN. I suppose it would be similar to having a {{Country data America}} template. I know where to propose the deletion of the redirect, but the removal of the alias is the problem, as the template is hard-locked. At present, there is about 320 transculsions of the redirect. I can cleanup those links in no time if need be, but I was wondering if there a way to change the output so that (e.g.) "{{flag|Micronesia}}" = Federated States of Micronesia. Is this possible? No, the output of {{flag}} uses the input parameter directly, so you would have to manually change all the instances of {{flag|Micronesia}} to {{flag|Federated States of Micronesia}} (or to {{flagcountry|FSM}} to save some typing) before removing the redirect. I think the best place for a discussion might be Talk:Federated States of Micronesia so you'd reach all the people interested in the country, as the flag tempate pages aren't widely watched. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:25, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I think many of the {{flag|Micronesia}} instances might be for tables where "Federated States of Micronesia" is too long, so it might make more sense to change those to {{flag|FS Micronesia}} instead. Yes, that was intentional. I didn't think that CHN-ROC should be described as an alternate form for the same country; it refers to a distinctly different entity. I can't disagree with either of those challenges. For a copyrighted image to be used to describe a historic moment, the moment itself must be discussed in the article text. Three guys smiling on the medal podium isn't a historic moment. A good example of a historic or iconic moment would be File:Carlos-Smith.jpg. As for the map, there are two problems. One is that particular artistic rendition of the map of Sagami Bay is not historic. The map can be re-drawn in a free version. Hi, I have a picture of a Dutch stamp early last century. That is correcty looking at the price of it:-) I reads 1916 Olympiad Melbourne and it shows a (probably) a metre class yacht. If you want to make a flag icon template out of File:Economic Cooperation Organization logo.png, you cannot. Your replacing of Spanish flag templates

I've noticed you had been replacing "flagicon|Spain|1939" with "flagicon|Spain|1945" on a lot of Wiki pages. Why do you replace one outdated version of the flag with another one? I think the proper use would be just "flagicon|Spain" which gives the default modern version of the flag.

Per WP:MOSFLAG, Use historical flags in contexts where the difference matters. That's why a thousand Wikipedia pages use the Franco-era flags for events that happened between 1938 and 1977. My recent edits are to correct a problem, where there were actually two different variants in this era, but the flag template only supplied one. Fair use images on sailing at the... summer Olympics

Hi,

As you might have noticed many of the fair use images have been removed from the pages sailing at the... this week by User talk:Rettetast. As result a bot is buzy to label them as orphans since they are used no longer. As result of that the images might be deleted.

A few months have past since I started the upgrade of the sailing at the ... series, and with your help on it was possible to reach a high level of generic format for this series. At this moment 1900 till 1972 were upgraded to this high level and the article series heve now left the stage of stub and have grown to a mature status as you will agree.

As we discussed the use of the fair use images by the Finn victors of 1964 the result of the discussion was keep. When these images of races and victors of the Olympics will be deleted we will loose significant information of the history of the sport. Knowlegeble sailor will get a lot of information if they compare, as example, a star race from 1948 with that of one of 1984. Information about development in handling, rigging, tunning and sailing the boat by top sailors at the top event.

By removing the images, that support the articles in a way only words can not convey, the article series will loose valuable information and maturity. The images are not there for decoration but perform an informative rol.

Can you please support the battle of maintaining the level of information maturity in this article series, before the images are deleted and undoing of the changes of User talk:Rettetast will not be possible without creating the images again. Well, I can't disagree with what Rettetast has been doing. I think you need to understand WP:Non-free content criteria, as I think your fair-use rationales are stretching and breaking the limits of that policy. For example, you say that File:1948 Opening at Torbay.jpg is required because Its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because the photo and its historical significance are the object of discussion in the article, but that isn't true. You only used that photo as an infobox decoration, and that was an infobox for the Torbay location so not appropriate. You mention in a single sentence that there was a separate opening ceremony, but that sentence does not require that illustration to significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding (per WP:NFCC#8). You also have two image galleries, one for boats and one for sailors, and those galleries completely violate the policy because galleries (by definition) are not "minimal usage". I understand your passion for these articles and the photos certainly make them look nicer, but we can't break Wikipedia policy (i.e. not "just a guideline") to illustrate our articles nicely. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:22, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I see no discussion on Template talk:Frac about deprecating that template, only about re-working it for better visibility. As to MOS:NUM, it specifically states that "The template ⁄ is available for representing common fractions." Using the Unicode fractions is contrary to WP:ACCESS, as they are not consistently read by any screen reader. This list also passed through the featured list candidacy process with the frac template, so I would suggest updating your browser instead of changing to unreadable Unicode. MOSNUM says that {{frac}} is "available", not that it should be exclusively used. It does not say anything at all about Unicode characters, let alone their deprecation. Lastly, a suggestion to switch from IE8 is somewhat disingenuous, since that is the most popular browser used by Wikipedia readers. Flagicon

Actually, I am about to start revamping every South American nations' article in order to facilitate the usage of the flags and cities (all very well within the manual of style). I am not merely using it for decoration. Please do not make it harder. Admitedly, the motivation behind first starting this is to make the chart on the Records and statistics of the Copa Libertadores#By city more relevant (this qualifies perfectly for its usage) but I decided to go ahead and do the same for every nation of South America. There is very strong consensus against the use of municipal flags for decorations like this. If you can convince the editors at WT:FOOTY of your plan, then I will undelete the templates, but I can't see that happening. What should I do for these two pages? The IP contributor seems to be playing safe position. Can you protect them?

I asked him to stop putting POV information on the article, explained that following WP's NPOV policy, disputed territories should be listes separately (not as part of the forst claimer, nor as independent (under the rule of the second claimer)), but it didn't help... Flag of French Guiana

I believe you may have been precipitate in changing the flag in the country data template for French Guiana. The new flag has been approved only by the minor authority, so it seems that it is the flag of the département, not of the region, and as region is the higher ranking level of authority, this flag is noit appropriate to represent the region. If a country level flag is needed, presumably it should be that of France: French Guiana is as much a part of France as the Isle of Wight is of England or Alaska of USA. I've posted thoughts here. Maratha Confederacy Template

I don't mind the clean-up, but there's something wrong here. The Maratha Confederacy may be referred to via a flagcountry, as it was common in the latter stages of the country to be called as the Confederacy as opposed to the Empire. I don't see why a redirect alias from Confederacy needs to be removed.

And the flagcountry entry should really be either Maratha Empire or Maratha Confederacy, because there's no such country or state as "Maratha", which is a demonym. Sabre (talk) 04:39, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see. I usually look at the "List of sovereign states" series to determine if a shortname alias should be used, and List of sovereign states in 1769 uses "Maratha". I suppose that should be fixed. But I took a look (with AWB) at all 80 pages that use the flag image, and only four pages use it with "Maratha Confederacy", so I'm not sure the redirect is needed either. I did some snooping around, and I don't see any evidence of the state being called merely "Maratha" anywhere. Maps of the period describe it as either "Mahratta States" or "Mahratta Confederacy". The Pantone colour is one of two defined and authorized by the federal government in Zurich, it belongs in the template, the template is not complete and moreover misleading without it.

Please see template talk:Country data East Germany - the East and West German flags were identical between 1949 and 1959, per the Flag of Germany article. Therefore it would seem that we need a 1949 variant of the East Germany flag (i.e. West Germany flag linking to East Germany article). I've tried but can't work out how to do this one. I suspect most of the time people used something like {{flag|Ireland|name=Irish Free State}} (especially with sport templates like {{fb}}, where you'd want to link to Republic of Ireland national football team anyway), but since there is a distinct Irish Free State article, there is no reason not to have a country data template. Hi. I don't understand your edit summary explanation in reverting my edit. I didn't change the flag and I understand that the EU flag is also the flag of Europe more generally. Your edit removed the flag of Europe from the infobox altogether. Why would you think that is better? "EU" as an internal parameter to {{Infobox Ryder Cup}} doesn't mean "European Union", it just means to display the Europe flag & team. I still think it's a problem to abbreviate "Europe" to "EU" when it's the common abbreviation for "European Union". It's not just the flag it effects, it also appears after the captain's name. GB and Ireland Ryder Cup teams

I'm loath to touch Template:Infobox Ryder Cup again and it's a more complicated issue this time, so I'm reporting this issue to you in the hope that you can fix it. The 1973 Ryder Cup, 1975 Ryder Cup and 1977 Ryder Cup articles have "GB" after the Great Britain and Ireland captain's name. Could you change this to "GB and Ireland", or something similar? Hi. Thanks for fixing that. I see that you also changed the US captions, but now they're inconsistent. Most use "United States", while others such as 1985 Ryder Cup use "USA". When I made those edits, I made the infobox match the article prose. If "Team United States" or "Team USA" was used in the article, that's what I used for the infobox. Country data Leeward Islands

Hi there. I had tried to create the template for Country data Leeward Islands yesterday to be able to display the image at File:Leewards.PNG. I see that it has been deleted by you. Was there something wrong? Sorry, I haven't created a country data template before and apolgise if I made any mistake.

Is there any scope to re-create this template correctly?

The image File:Leewards.PNG is copyrighted, so it is against Wikipedia policy (WP:NFCC) to transclude it from a template. Only the Leeward Islands cricket team article can display the image, under a valid fair-use rationale. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:16, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
