regex suggestion on newartbot/good edit

Hi there. I was just suggesting another regex for the new article bot:

-100 /\{\{db[|-}]/

... would catch the standard CSD templates; however, I did notice that none of them were <nowiki> protected, which could be a problem on pages that meta-reference the tags (ex, "the {{db}} template is used to mark pages for speedy deletion"). I dunno if you accounted for this in your code or not, but I figured I'd offer it up as a helpful suggestion based on what I was able to see :D. Anyway, cheers. --slakr 23:18, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your bot edit

I like the bad search list that it does, as it provides me with a ton of pages that are good speedy deletion canidates. Would it be possible for the bot to only show the pages that exist, instead of red links for pages that were deleted? Thanks! Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 02:18, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:Mikhailtal.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Mikhailtal.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:22, 16 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 12:22, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

In regards to my correction edit

Alex, listen! Some of the info about the Ukrainian soccer is wrong. I'm just trying to straight up some of those things. It's not just a random corrections.

You merely reverted my corrections for Ukrainian Cup. I understand why this may seem as trolling or as such, but if you'd take a closer look you will notice that I was just trying to fix some of the misleading information.
Sorry, I was probably wrong here. As a rule of thumb try to provide references if you change factual info, that way less misunderstanding would arrive Alex Bakharev 10:53, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kyiv vs Kiev edit

Kyiv, not Kiev!

Alex, what is the problem with changing the old, unused Russian name to the current Ukrainian name?

Horlo

  • My main problem is that Kiev is unilateral change of the article that many people worked on that confuses western readers who might simply not know that Kiev and Kyiv is the same city. Another problem is that Kiev is much more widespread usage (in fact my spellchecker (built up in Firefox) is trying to change Kyiv to Kiev. The same way I would oppose unilateral changes from Moscow to Moskva or from Saint-Petersburg to Sankt-Peterburg or whatever. As I said my opinion means little just persuade multiplicity of the authors of the article to change its title is all what is required. On the other hand revert warring would not help you. In fact I have filed WP:AN/3RR report against you Alex Bakharev 01:48, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alex,

If you ask most western readers whether it is Kyiv of Kiev, most would ask you "what are you talking about". To them it is a non-issue. There is no problem with a re-direct from Kiev to Kyiv, as I bet most people wouldn't really care. They want to know what is going on there now, and won't get offended that

The problem that Kiev is more widespread, especially in your spellchecker, is not a valid argument at all. 100 years ago, most people considered ethnicity a valid reason to force you to sit in the back of a bus. Just because many people do it doesn't mean it's right. Please combine this with the first point, that most people don't really care either way, they've just been sold this name for some reason.

Speaking of which, what is your reason for being so passionate about a Ukrainian city?

  • I am not particular passionate about that city; I am passionate about the rules and consensus Alex Bakharev 06:36, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just noticed you put the article up for deletion. Earlier, I listed the IP that was deleting the tags and other material at WP:AIV. Kiev edit

Alex, something rather strange is going on at Kiev. There are too many different IPs from different locations for this sudden burst of Kyiv-pushing to make sense. There is either some great coincidence, some kind of co-ordination is happening or some kind of spoofing is going on. I don't know what to make of it. Turkic Kaganate edit

Dear Alex, on 5 July 2007 I opened a page "Turkic Kaganate" (initial entry) which is prominently absent from the WP, which is a nonsense, because among the empires it ranks among the largest and definitely prominent. Would you please help me to locate who and how deleted this seed page, now it reverts to Göktürks, which refers to the leading tribe of the Kaganate, but not to the political, international, structural, historical etc subjects of the state. It seems that some editors do not deem certain subjects worthy of mentioning. This also creates linking problems, when the subject is the Kaganate, and not its people. How, for example, you can address the split of the Kaganate into Western and Eastern fractions? The Göktürks did not split, but the Kaganate did. Thank you, Barefact 10:52, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

It looks that Internedko created Western Turkic Kaganate 1 October 2006 as a stub, and it did not advance much since then, though there was enough infighting about its contents and even existence. I created a stub Turkic Kaganate on 5 July 2007 (initial entry), because it plays such an important historical role from Caspian Sea to Mongolia, and is directly linked to by a number of articles, and even more articles are linked indirectly via Göktürks. Please advise me on where that redirect by Ghirlandajo is located. Barefact 05:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good to be back edit

Alex,

How are you? My vacation was grand. I had a lot of time to read up on wikipedia policy concerning conflict resolution.

I am therefore requesting a poll on the name Kyiv/kiev. However, as you so rightly pointed out, this page is for the western audience, and therefore I believe that only native English speakers should be allowed to vote.

When do you think the poll should start?

Horlo 14:37, 28 July 2007 (UTC)HorloReply

  • The poll starts then it is convenient for you. Open a new section in the Talk:Kiev and put a reference to it in the WP:RM, it also maybe useful to add a reference in WP:RfC Alex Bakharev 03:41, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is the standard invite that I sent out to anybody whom I found on the archives. Please pass it on.

Re:Parole edit

Hi Alex. I remember about the parole, but I reverted the article only once. This was my edit: [1], and this was my revert to it: [2] As you can see, I made only 1 rv, as my first edit was not an rv to any previous version. --Grandmaster 05:47, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Btw, by the same token User:Hajji Piruz should also be considered to be in violation of his parole for making these two edits: [3] [4] However, it is not a violation either, as the first one was an edit, and second one an actual revert. Grandmaster 06:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

About Corduene edit

Hi,

I just wanted to clarify that the relationship is confirmed by numerous sources, including the following:

  • Encyclopedia Columbia says: Kurds are Commonly identified with the ancient Corduene.
  • If these two tracts are rightly placed, Cordyene must also be sought on the left bank of the Tigris. The word is no doubt the ancient representative of the modern Kurdistan, and means a country in which Kurds dwelt.[5], Source: George Rawlinson, The Seven Great Monarchies Of The Ancient Eastern World, Vol 7.
  • The Kurds must certainly be connected with the Karduchi mentioned in Xenophon and the Gordyaei mentioned in other Greek and Latin authors, with the Kordukh or Kortschaikh of the Armenians and the land of Gardu of the Aramaic and Syriac writers.Source: G.R. Driver, Studies in Kurdish History, Bulletin of the School of Oriental Studies, University of London, 1922, pp.491-511, see p.493

Apologies for bad joke of a truthful nature. edit

Dear Alex BAKHAREV Saw you on the Dahn page, and it brought back a memory of a very early post, for which I owe you an apology. It is the one post I did out of a sense of mischievous fun, fully knowing it would be edited out. My family lived in Ringwood almost from its foundation (emigrated 1836). I saw it transformed from a beautiful rural townlet into what was defined in 1966 as the ugliest town in Australia for its 16 petrol retail outlets, and know intimately the history of the area (it had the finest native orchids in southern Victoria down to the early 1900s and Melbournians often took train rides out in springtime to see the spectacle). So I popped in my comment about that sale of that area, which is now a commercial zone. I remember the sale, and the anger of old families, who knew the original donee, and were much upset at this alienation of land given for their recreation and use to private enterprise. Of course, it cannot be documented, like so much in history. I knew that, being unsourced, it would be quickly removed. It was, as it were, a little spur to a 'new chum', whose gifts and intelligence will assuredly enrich the country we now share, to learn some more about the intimate history of the area wher eyou live, and nothing more than that. I suppose an apology is due for the small bother. До связи Счастливо Nishidani 12:09, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Hello Alex. I was just wondering if you know anything about the copyright status of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia material from http://www.cultinfo.ru/. Can we upload their images to Wikipedia? Thanks, KoberTalk 07:50, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • The Great Soviet Encyclopedia is not different from the other Soviet publications. Assuming Russian copyright laws should be used then material specifically produced for Encyclopedia by its employees (or published without naming the author) are public domain if they were first published before 1 Jan 1954. It means that the latest edition of the GSE is copyrighted, the previous one is copyrighted from the letter K and the edition Last-2 is public domain. If a material was not specifically produced for the encyclopedia and the author is known (e.g. Encyclopedia published a reproduction of a famous painting) then the image is public domain only if the author should die before 1 Jan 1954. I am not sure what edition cultinfo used but I suspected it is the latest edition. If so then it is copyrighted most probably (unless we can prove the image from cultinfo is a reproduction of an older image) Alex Bakharev 08:11, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation. According to ru:Большая советская энциклопедия, the cultinfo version is the 3rd (and the latest) edition. It contains plenty of great photos, but since their copyright status is unclear, I’d better refrain from using them on wiki. Spasibo, KoberTalk 08:34, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please resign edit

Hello Alex Bakharev, by removing the facts of Soviet terror in Estonia during 1940 from the subject of controversy in the article Bronze Soldier of Tallinn that has been laid out according to WP NPOV policies by citing the opposing viewpoints. By removing the facts of a viewpoint that had been referenced and sourced in the article and elsewhere on WP, including but not only as the events were reported by Time Magazine. You have involved yourself on WP with a political agenda currently common to the Putin's government of Russia that reportedly attempts to whitewash the Soviet history. Therefore please resign as an administrator on WP ASAP, as one shouldn't be acting according to a political bias. Thereafter, please do not vandalize articles on WP by removing facts that have been sourced and referenced, please do not edit WP based on a political opinion. In the future please attempt to find a common ground first by involving yourself in a discussion in case you see anything questionable in any controversial articles. Thanks!--Termer 05:58, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • If you read WP:RS you will realize that 1940 publication in a foreign magazine having no reliable way to communicate with the sources of info is not a reference that allows to refer to an info as a fact (and it is not relevant enough to have a long discussion). Regarding my recall, please follow User:Alex Bakharev/Recall Alex Bakharev 07:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you for sharing your opinion. Please do not question your fellow editors intelligence by pointing out the WP:RS that is based on common sense. The fact itself is common knowledge for anybody familiar with the subject,. The "foreign magazine", depends on the viewpoint I guess, is there to confirm the fact. Agreed on: there is no need to have a long discussion, since there is no need to prove to anybody that the earth is spherical not flat. Exactly like there is no need to prove to anybody that people got shot for political reasons including the voting matters by the soviets after they had taken over the Baltic countries. Please resign as an administrator, since you have clearly shown support to the political agenda of the current Russian government while editing WP. Thanks-Termer 09:48, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Sorry for "bulging in", but I don't see that Alex has misused his administrative powers in any way, therefore I see no reason to ask him to resign. This is normal wiki-dispute, he has not used administrative tools to "win". While I share your opinion, Termer, about the Time article, I recommend that you treat this as a normal content dispute, not as administrator abusing his powers. Also, an apology would be nice, but that is my personal opinion. Sander Säde 11:24, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I've never suggested that Alex has misused his administrative powers. But it seem I have a different understanding: the way an administrator should behave while jumping into a controversial subject that is in the middle of an edit warring. I'd leave the decision still up to Alex. In case you Alex would like to continue heating up edit wars according to personal political bias, please resign. In case you'd like in the future to support finding a common ground, I 'd have no problem with an administrator like that. Thats it from me regarding the issue, I'm not going to return to this, only if other incidents occur. thanks--Termer 16:28, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I beg to differ; you asked him to resign his Administrator right on the English Wikipedia - that is about as serious (and direct) accusation of Administrator-abuse you can get. Perhaps taking a moment to think before you post is in order - trust me, it does a lot of good. Anthøny 17:46, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi Alex Bakharev With regrets I have to inform you: the issue raised up here have been part of my statement at [6] due to following actions [7], [8].

Based on the previous, please consider resigning as an administrator on WP. In case chosen to continue, please avoid taking sides in the middle of ongoing political edit wars, please attempt to help finding a middle ground, a consensus first in such controversial articles.

In order to help me to remove my statement at the arbitration page, please consider rephrasing your posting at [9] since the "removing sourced info…is not the best style of work." Is in conflict with "Editorial of 1940 is obviously not a reliable source". Also, please consider providing a reliable source and appropriate license to the image that has been restored despite removed from WP. [10]. Please let me know of your decision, in case chosen to correct those actions that in my opinion show a pattern of politically motivated edits not appropriate for an administrator on WP. Thanks--Termer 03:14, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alex, I suggest you ignore this nonsense. There is no sense in allowing the user to go on with the harassment campaign. No need for him removing or modifying the statement. I quite like having this guy said what he did in his statement. I will make sure this evidence of harassment is added to the proper section in the ArbCom proceedings soon to open. ArbCom is at the fellow's disposal as a tool to deadmin as well as instructions on the recall procedures you opened yourself to voluntarily. If this harassment continues, it will be reported to ANI without even waiting for the ArbCom to open. --Irpen 03:23, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your input Irpen. However, I do hope that Alex Bakharev chooses to do the right thing (correct the actions) so that we can put this behind us. Nobody wants to have those situations here on WP but at the same time, I'm sorry, heating up edit wars and political bias on WP can't be tolerated. Sorry to hear that you feel this as a harassment. I could claim the same about the opposing actions but I'm going to keep good faith and hope for a solution , to put an end to those meaningless political debates, POV labeling etc. on WP so that everybody could go on with writing their side of the story on WP. Thanks--Termer 08:54, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Alex Bakharev for showing good faith at Image_talk:20SSEstland.jpg. I'm going ahead and withdraw my statement involving your actions at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_arbitration/Digwuren. Please still consider looking into this [11] and I apologize in case I’ve been too harsh while handling such touchy and controversial subjects. Thanks!--Termer 09:07, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dacy69 edit

Hi, can you tell me if this is a violation of Dacy69's parole. I mean he did use the talkpage, but most of the time the explanation was one sentence long. He never participated in the discussion of the articles, reverted, left his one sentence explanation and was never seen again. I find this kind of behavior very disruptive.

Sahl ibn Sunbat reverts, edit summary: (rv - pls. engage in talkpage)

Talk assumes bad faith and accuses ArmeniaArmenia of being a sock, says that current version accommodates both versions. He never edited the article before, neither did he participated in the talkpage.

House of Hasan Jalalyan reverts, edit summary: (rv - dont delete sourced info)

Talk "And put your arguments here so we will be able to discuss". Never edited the article before, neither has he participated in the discussion.

List of Azerbaijani films 1898-1919 reverts, edit summary: (rv)

Talk "Discussion about the name of Azerbaijan does not belong here: Never edited the article before, neither has he participated in the discussion.

Movses Kaghankatvatsi reverts, edit summary: "(rv - see discussion. we should use in article like that neutral source)"

Talk "MarshalBagramyan, your last edit has refrence to non-neutral source while you have reverted neutral source.". Never edited the article before, neither has he participated in the discussion.

Khojaly Massacre revertes, edit summary: "(rv - see talkpage)"

Talk ":Statement is full POV we dont have personal interpretation here." Never edited the article before, neither has he participated in the discussion.

Thank you for the time. VartanM 07:13, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • To be honest I do not know. IMHO he did not violate his parole, but if somebody on the opposite side was blocked for similar behavior, then we should be fair Alex Bakharev 07:40, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, nobody else was blocked, or behaved the way he did. VartanM 07:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Check my lengthy discussion on many pages where I contributed and check also some other users who left short comments. As for me - I left short comments where I deem it is obvious and don't need explanation or someone else made similar points. --Dacy69 16:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, AlexBakharev, I was blocked for much less than what Dacy69 is doing. Here, [12], I was blocked for making 2 reverts on one article and one rever on another, after 2-3 weeks of not doing any reverts at all. I had technically stayed under 3RR, but apparently that wasn't enough. Here, [13], User:Grandmaster was blocked, even though he technically stayed within the limits of the revert parole. He was still blocked for reverting across multiple pages without giving adequate explanations--i.e. edit warring.

Dacy mainly visits articles to revert (when User:Grandmaster has exhausted his reverts), and provides bogus, one-line explanations to technically remain within the limits of parole. Take a look at his contribution history, [14], and you will see the pattern. He has been blocked for this kind of behaviour before, [15], last time for 72 hours, so clearly it hasn't worked for him. Unless he is blocked for longer period, his behaviour will continue.--TigranTheGreat 16:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was blocked for edit warring on one particular page. Don't give inaccurate information. Again - my contribution does not limit to articles visited by Grandmaster since many pages we both edit related to Azerbaijan. It will be good to check contribution pattern of yours, MarshallBagramyan, VartanM + and also some socks which recently appeared.--Dacy69 19:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alex, I urge you to pay attention to this discussion - again my rv will be reported but discussion langauge and essence is not tolerable - [16]--Dacy69 21:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dacy69, if someone else misbehaves, it doesn't give you the right to do the same.VartanM 21:40, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Where I used similar language? In what line my behavior even remotely resembles that?--Dacy69 14:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see nothing wrong with Dacy’s editing. He did not violate anything. I would actually suggest that admins checked editing of User:MarshallBagramyan, VartanM, User:Hetoum I, User:Meowy and a number of others, including an army of socks that revert Khachen and Sahl ibn-Sunbat. I provided plenty of info in my evidence to the arbcom. In particular, I would appreciate if admins could deal with persistent removal by Marshal of information about the origins of Hasan-Jalal: [17], [18], [19] Grandmaster 06:38, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

While blaming User:Dacy69, User:VartanM is currently involved in revert warring at Khachen and Sahl ibn-Sunbat - [20]. On Khachen especially , he made reverts removing entire content of the article with plenty of references [21]. On Talk:Khachen and Talk:Sahl ibn-Sunbat, he is following pretty much what was started by User:Anatolmethanol, a sockpuppet of User:Fadix, i.e. denying sourced material with a line reference and just insisting on own opinion without facts. I don't know how long this is going to continue, along with the recent wave of sockpuppetry on almost all pages related to Azerbaijan. This form of aggressive editing and lack of restriction on User:VartanM and sockpuppetry encouragement for cases like User:Fadix is damaging Wikipedia NPOV. Atabek 16:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

political wikipedia userpage categories edit

You wrote: "we do not have categories like Category:Republican wikipedians or Category:Wikipedians supporting abortion or Category:Communist wikipedians." You are thoroughly mistaken. Please see Category:Wikipedians by political ideology. `'Míkka 18:15, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_August_10#Category:AllWikipedian_by_by_political_ideology_categories nominated all of them for deletion. Please join the discussion Alex Bakharev 13:13, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you explain why you came to nominate these categories for speedy deletion when this was rejected as innapropriate earlier this year? And are you aware that it was then submitted to a FULL discussion just a few months ago and deletion was comprehensively rejected? Would be interested to know if you investigated the previous discussions. Galloglass 12:16, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
As a matter of fact I was not aware of those discussions, nor frankly not interested to. The categories are wrong. They are very useful for canvassing and for almost nothing else. I really hate to see 2 miillion wikipedians of User_Republican wikipedians fighting with 2 million User Democrat Wikipedians. It would kill any meaningful discussion. If anybody wants to disclose their political identity and philosophy they have the User pages for it there is no need to put you into a political categories. Wikipedia is not a battleground for fighting political parties it is a cooperative project there each participant should struggle to the fair and unbiased disclosure of information. English translation of the Valuyev Circular edit

Hi, Alex. I stumbled through translating the Valuyev Circular into English, at s:Valuyev Circular. I'm sure it could use a proof-reading, if you have a bit of extra time. Regards. Michael Z. 2007-08-10 14:22 Z

  • I have copyedited a little. My first USA boss taught international people that the worse your command of English is the shorter the sentences should be used in articles and reports (not the other way around). I feel that my English is still not good enough for the sentences of Valuyev. Please revert if you disagree with my edits, your English is better than mine. • Thanks, it needed the attention of a native speaker. I was guessing at the sense of some phrases and sentences. I have tweaked some minor copy in your edit—please have a quick look when you have a chance. Cheers. Michael Z. 2007-09-12 20:28 Z

I have puted the National Bolshevik Wikipedians in the Third position category, but then moved it to Third Position Wikipedians, but the Third Position also stayed and its empry. But why is the category Wikipedians by political ideology is being considered for deletion? Its an importent category, and so is the National Bolshevik Wikipedians. I mean, their are such wikipedians, me for exemple. And no, we cant put it in Communists because National Bolshevism is not left, its a mixure, Third Position. User Irpen edit

Hi, I took your advice you left at my user page. However, given your interest in this matter I would appreciate if you as an administrator had a closer look at User:Irpen's actions in this regard irrespective of your relations to him. In my view these actions are disturbing: for example in an article Russians in Ukraine in order to keep the aforementioned article he forked the unrelated material to the article to justify its presence. This is not the way articles are written. They are not written around illustrations, but rather illustrations are arranged to suit the narration. I still have the hope that you car rise above your friendship with him and treat the matter in question fairly. Sincerely, --Hillock65 13:53, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

This "material" was written by myself and added to an article where its presence is warranted by the article's topic. That the image is related to the current content of the article and critically complements and illustrates it, not the anti-Russian sentiment in general but a particular party whose Russophobia is discussed in the article. If Hillock thinks the whole material does not belong to the article, it is a content issue and he should discuss the content not the copyright. If the content dispute ends with the content's version reflecting his view, the image question would automatically be resolved to his favor as well. This is my view of the issue. --Irpen 07:21, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Irpen here Alex Bakharev 08:27, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not that that surprises me here, I can hardly find an instance where you didn't. If you look at the history, first this image appeared with no commentary whatsoever, then in order to keep this image splattered in the article a mere sentence has been added. Not even going into wondering why a fringe political party with mere half percentage point has such prominence in an article on Russians in Ukraine (?!), one persistently overlooks the fact that a sentence does not qualify as a critical commentary. This image's place is in an article on that political party, not in an article on artichokes or condoms, provided a sentence about the Svoboda party is added. Please see the image talk to see reference to unacceptable use of fair use images. As far as the content, I will argue that at the article talk page, but that does not negate the fact that this image's use has been clearly abused and is used by some to inflame xenophobic passions. The same could be done with Russian or Polish images. It is fundamentally wrong, I hope you can see the multiplicity of reasons why. --Hillock65 11:39, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ban of sock puppets edit

Hi Alex!

You just banned user Londium who was involved in a dispute with user DerDoc. I cannot judge whether this was justified or not. What I know for sure is that user DerDoc is a sock puppet of recently banned user Tajik. He showed up just after Tajik was banned, his contributions are exactly the same, he uses the same line of reasoning but most important - he is obviously dislexic - and does the same orthographic mistakes.

He might be using a proxy server seated in Austria in order to obfuscate his identity, but the evidence should be more than enough. Will you please have a look at that. Q.Fānasī 10:37, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Q, thanks for the head up. I agree that contributions of DerDoc looks sockish and his POV is common for the Iranian editors like Tajik. On the other hand I am not 100% convinced he is Tajik, can you provide the list of common spelling errors between him and Tajik. You may also want to explain a little bit about yourself. Your contributions look sockish even more than DerDok's Alex Bakharev 11:06, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
You are free to ask for a checkuser file. I have already explained to this user that I am living in Austria, and my IP (193.170.48.2) is from Vienna in Austria. And I do not know what this user calls POV. I have asked him to contribute in the talk page, and I have elaborated my thoughts [23]. But he has so far refused to explain his view in the talk page and instead reverts without reason, calling my edits POV. I would also like you to take a look at his own history: [24]. He has only 12 edits, all of them in regard of the Seljuqs. And from the beginning on, he started to insult me and claim that I am a sockpuppet. I think it's likely that he himself is a sockpuppet, maybe of a banned user. That's probably the reason why he knows Tajik and why he has created a new account. -DerDoc 12:42, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Alex. You might have misspelled the name on User:Londium. Apparently no User:Adil_Bagirov exists, I tried several different spellings, but they did not work (I kinda remember the name from somewhere). And why do you suspect them to be the same person? And DerDoc, I think you should mention on your talk page, and on User talk:193.170.48.2 that it is your IP (in case you forget to login), and you might be avoiding a few sockpuppet allegations. If you wish, an admin can move that anon user page to your user page along with your editing history there, as far as I know. DenizTC 16:16, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fixed, I meant AdilBaguirov (talk · contribs) Alex Bakharev 00:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Alex, may I send you an email about Tajik's spelling errors? This way he will not be able to fix that flaw too soon, so he can be easily unmasked again.
In what sense do my edits look sockish? Whose sock puppet could I be? Is there or has there been another user resembling me? I would love to know about him/her! I can explain whatever you want about my person, just let me know if there is a way to contact you without exposing personal information publicly. I have settled for watching the Wikipedia for quite some time, frequently utilizing the history function. That way I was able to come to the conclusion, that Tajik and DerDoc are the same person. I created an account in order to be able to contribute here, without having my IP visible to the whole world. Unfortunately I have not much spare time at the moment for any large debate here, so I rarely do edits in a limited area. Q.Fānasī 19:11, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please send me an E-mail it is a good idea. You should realise that a user with 16 edits who jumps directly into contentious editorial disputes and seems to be quite familiar with the inner working of wikipedia is a suspected sock (or at least an additional account of an established user). I have no ideas who it maybe as yet. You might want to explain it a little bit in your email Alex Bakharev 00:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you mean. Before I reverted two of the edits, I literally went out and looked up the info to see if they were correct. Parole violation edit

User:Dacy69, who is on a 1 revert per article per week parole, has violated his parole:

First revert (August 16, 2007): [25] which was a revert back to this version [26] (he reinserted the biased/non scholarly material)

Second revert (August 20, 2007): [27] once again he reinserted the same material.

I just realized this as this is the first time I have logged into Wikipedia in days. This is a clear violation of the parole.Hajji Piruz 00:41, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alex, since you concluded that User:Dacy69's edits were in violation of 1RR, I would like to ask you why were User:Hajji Piruz - [28] and User:AlexanderPar - [29] removing sourced material from that page in first place without proper explanation or discussion on the talk page? Thanks. Atabek 02:51, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, I am not really an expert in the article. There are reasons why some criticism of an author maybe exclude from the text: WP:BLP, WP:UNDUE, if the criticism is repeated etc. I could look for a compromise or you can start an article RfC or a meditation. It would be good if neutral people would look there Alex Bakharev 03:23, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that no arguments were brought up on the talk page to prove that the sourced opinion was WP:BLP or WP:UNDUE. In this light, I don't see how edits by User:Hajji Piruz or User:AlexanderPar can be at all viewed as constructive and/or in good faith. This seems like another edit war, where users just disregard each other and keep reverting without discussion to push some WP:SOAP. And the objective seems to be not the contribution itself but to get someone hooked on the rules and blocked. I believe the posting by User:Fedayee just below is not a surprise in this light :) Atabek 17:57, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey Alex, shouldn't this edit actually go in the sub-section Blocks for violation of revert parole, the temporary injunction was a long time ago. Thanks. - Fedayee 04:28, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

You could have fooled me about the talk pages not being forums for debate;-) What has got my goat is that G is pretty peremptory. No discussion is brooked it seems. It seems to me that G is a bit high handed and biased himself and is unfit to be an admin. Is there a "recall" process? Albatross2147 08:04, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Well any admin who has grossly misused his or her tools can be desysopped by the decision of the Arbcom. Some admins (e.g. me) voluntarily put some simplified procedures for their recall (see Category:Wikipedia administrators open to recall), more than 90% (including Gnaggarra) have not done it as yet. If you are interested in my opinion on the segment of your dispute that I have seen, then IMHO Gnagarra was right and you were wrong. Obviously I seen only a small part of the conflict but... Your bot edit

The AlexNewArticlesBot for plants has so many plant articles on the one page that the list cannot be accessed--can you please limit the number of articles on a page, and break this page down, so I can review the articles created by PolBot? KP Botany 00:25, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have manually archieved half of the User:AlexNewArtBot/PlantsSearchResult as User:AlexNewArtBot/PlantsSearchResult/archive4. Is it enough for the articles to be visible? Do you have problems browsing other AlexNewArtBot achieves? They should be about 100K each when they are automatically generated. I guess the current spike in the plant articles is the result of the actions of the Polbot that automatically generates missing articles from some database. If the problem persists I would have to modify the algorith for archiving search results, making it more frequent for some articles Alex Bakharev 01:53, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • I can actually click on some with this broswer/computer confiburation, but only a few, so it needs to be shorter still. The problem won't persist after Polbot is done with the IUCN data, but in the meantime these are the articles that need all checked, and there's no way I can do it as fast as it needs done with the list this long. Usually AlexNewArtBot's lists, no matter how long, contain sufficient articles by human editors whom I know that I don't have to go through all of them, only new or unknown or problematic editors (it's how the editors see my new contributions also, and I tend to need copyedited--if people can't find my article, my quality goes down). To me, it's one of the most useful bots, and well scheduled bots on Wikipedia--in fact, I think its timing is currently excellent, except for this. Is there a way you can make the change temporary? Kievan Rus' page protection edit

I was surprised to see you protecting the page. Our policy in Wikipedia:Protection policy states in completely unambiguous terms:

During edit wars, admins should not protect pages when they are involved as a party to the dispute, except in the case of simple vandalism or libel issues against living people.

There is no vandalism or libel issues here, there is only a content dispute to which you are clearly a party ([32],[33]). Our guidelines say nothing about relaxing those rules if the admin is restricting his/her reverts to rolling back edits by anonymous accounts or perceived socks. Also clearly, unintentionally or not, you have ended up protecting "your" version of the article.

I invite you to unblock the page and ask an uninvolved admin for page protection. Balcer 00:24, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have only semiprotected the article to limit the disruption caused by multiple accounts of established users. See nothing wrong if they are forced to use their main accounts Alex Bakharev 01:06, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for clearing up my confusion. I did not notice the protection level (just the lock icon) and just assumed that full protection was imposed. I am still not sure if your action is strictly in accordance with the guidelines, but I personally do not mind it. Semiprotection will indeed be useful for the article. Sincerely, Hetoum I 03:40, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Maybe I am wrong, but the second revert-like edit looks like a good faith attempt to merge two different versions. I am reluctant to apply the 1RR in that case Alex Bakharev 04:17, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The issue was discussed in detail, and they still did not meet exceptional claim-source criteria. His initial edit was borderline of wholesale vandalism, but the second time, he simply re-added what was deleted previously without talking or reaching consensus, hence edit-warring. Forgive the stupid question, but I'm not very technically minded. Is the purpose of this page to accumulate terms likely to feature in articles related to the sport of cricket? If so, there are some very odd inclusions! --Dweller 21:32, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your input requested edit

Hi Alex, could you please take a look at Dvar when you have time? This article was deleted as the result of an AfD, however, User:M.V.E.i., the creator, is still certain that the Russian sources make its subject meets WP:MUSIC (no English reliable references could be found). As you can read the Russian links provided in the article, your opinion on the matter would be much appreciated. Thank you, PeaceNT 15:10, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • To be honest, I never heard about that group, but on the other hand I never heard of any Russian Gothic Rock band, so my opinion can be ignorant. The article referred to some gothic music websites, tha I never heard of (maybe due to my ignorance) I am surprised that no Russian editors participated in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dvar so the result can be biased. I would recommend to userfy the article and discuss it on the Portal:Russia/Russia-related Wikipedia notice board maybe somebody could improve the article Alex Bakharev 16:03, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

AlexNewArtBot edit

Hi Alex, and thanks for tweaking the ruleset I added yesterday for WP:Ships. Forgive me if you've addressed this before, but I have a request: would you consider changing the bot output to report both a link to the article name AND a link to the article talk page? For those of us who are using new article lists to tag articles for a project, it would be most useful to see a talk page link for the article - if the link is red, that is a certain indication that the article has not been tagged for any project. Appreciate if you could let me know whether this is feasible. Maralia 03:16, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:NikitaKhrushchev.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:NikitaKhrushchev.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Thuresson 10:16, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help needed edit

We have a bad situation in the Template:WW2InfoBox. A majority decided that the new version is batter. Yet the looser side started reverting, and an administrator protected the page, with the image NOT supported by the majority in it. I tryed to explain him that it's not ok that a minority started warring AND gets what it wants, but he didnt listen to me. I hope an administrator could solve this, please. Replaceable fair use Image:Veller mihail.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Veller mihail.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Regarding edit wars on 'Sajeeb Wazed' edit

The reference of these materials are from Probe News Magazine which is a well published, distributed and reputated magazine in Bangladesh. It is not a tabloid as you can see by exploring their magazine articles that they publish on the web. Hence I don't see why the truthfullness of the source is being bought into question while the other user (that I am in an 'edit war' with) clearly wants to censor the facts. I would like to bring your attention to the fact that there is nothing dubious or libelous about a plain and simple arrest/incarceration that was made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kapedkrusader (talkcontribs) 13:45, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Danilova-baryshnikov.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Danilova-baryshnikov.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. -- Y not? 15:49, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am affraid that if the {{PD-LOC}} is depreciated then we cannot keep the image on Commons. We might try to find an image of Baryshnikov and Danilova suitable for Fair Use then Alex Bakharev 00:43, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

a request edit

Hi, Would you add some of the articles related Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2 to your watch list and apply its Remedies? (which is not restricted to just the parties listed there). And probably ask some of your admin friends to do so? for example, I just saw another sock in Iranian Azeris which uploaded a map from Dutch NGO called UNPO (if you examine it, its contents are just cut&paste of other websites), selling it "with relation with UN"!, uploaded with poster fair use.

Neutral admin intervention will save lots of time/energy and will save integrity of this project. Thank you in advance,--Pejman47 20:53, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use disputed for Image:Iran Azeri Cartoon.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Iran Azeri Cartoon.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:13, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nasiba Zeynalova edit

Hey Alex, can you please give your opinion on this article. An Azeri biography site is being used as a source, the same site has the biography in Russian. Controversial claims are only available in Azeri. Isn't there a WP somewhere that says exceptional claims need exceptional sources. VartanM 23:41, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have not noticed exceptional claims there. Can you elaborate? Do you mean the sentences about the March Days? I do not want to create a POV fork there and the story has not much of the connections to the actress biography anyway. I have removed Armenians as from the "Bolshevik and Armenian" units as it was Bolsheviks who seems to be in charge Alex Bakharev 00:40, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The controversy is that there are no other sources that claim that the family fled because of March Days. Neutral sources refer to the incident as March Days or March events not massacre. VartanM 01:10, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bot edit

Is it possible to add a temporary template to the search results to request some feedback from its users? Colchicum 18:13, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Certainly. The bot does not touch any lines that is not start with * (and inserts new searches just above the first line starting with asterisk). If you want to modify a single search result - just manually edit it. If you want to modify all 150+ of them then I could reprogram the bot or we can just use awb or similar tool. Alex Bakharev 23:23, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Is there a way to compile a list of the articles (created on some day) that don't end up indexed in a feed (except the Good List and Bad List)? I would like to look at them to figure out what we miss. Colchicum 19:36, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
        • Wow, so you think we report most of the new articles and there is a sense to analyze the rest. If so it is an important milestone! I will do the changes to the bot in a few days Alex Bakharev 23:34, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
          • No, I am not sure, I have no idea. But then it is even more interesting to look at what we fail to account for. Colchicum 23:38, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • By the way, maybe it would be better to delink article titles in the logs so that they don't confuse those who click Whatlinkshere and let them find relevant feeds. Colchicum 22:08, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • I see what you mean but would not it make analyzing the logs more difficult? A person analyzing the log would have to cut and paste name of the article instead of just clicking it. Maybe link the articles as external links (as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title Title] rather than [[title]]? Alex Bakharev 23:34, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hiero-Schemamonk Amvrosy = Ambrosius of Optina edit

Could you develop this Stub which I just started? --Ludvikus 11:27, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Google has 23 items on him: [40]. --Ludvikus 11:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
You know/remember that he's in a chapter in Velikoe v malom by Serge Nilus? --Ludvikus 11:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hieroscemamonk edit

It seems that the above is a Russian orthodox title. So we should make corrections. --Ludvikus 16:25, 6 October 2007 (UTC) --- Nice work, Alex. You know Russia and the Russians! Best to you, --Ludvikus 18:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yegor Chekryakovsky edit

Did only Serge Nilus find him important or noteworthy? --Ludvikus 11:42, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have wrote an article. I guess since he is canonized as a Saint, he is notable Alex Bakharev 17:19, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jewish Bolshevism edit

Dear Alex,

My Russian is insufficient to evaluate External link/(Source) #10 that an editor refers to in the above. For your convenience I reproduce it here: [41]. Can you tell me something about it? What kind of source is it? What does it say, more or less, and who is the author? Thank you, and have a nice day. --Ludvikus 15:05, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Chinese in Russian Revolution edit

I am really surprised that you support such an article just because you find it "interesting"; I have a handful of books on the Russian Revolution and I have not noticed there a reference to the Chinese. Maybe I should look again. --Ludvikus 12:39, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello? Do you remember? edit

It is me, Hurricane06. Last year I kind of lost connection with Wikipedia and couldn't do anything with it for about a year. Now I am back and am wondering if there is anything new with Wikipedia since last year? If there is, then please notify me ASAP. My thanks Hurricane06 02:26, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Also can you help me become more better at this, maybe even get good enough to rise up in the ranks. If you can mentor me as well, that will make my day!

Novopetrovsk edit

Hi, Alex! Don't worry, when your bot catches a geo-article, it gets on my to-do list automatically, and this particular one I am hoping to sort out today, as it is a complete mess. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 11:51, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
