Talk:Thung Sin Nio

Latest comment: 4 years ago by SusunW in topic GA Review

Thank you for this article SusunW! I did some minor edits:

  • Added details on her prominent family background, which is well-known to this day in Indonesia, particularly in Bogor
  • Well-known terms such as 'Volksraad' should be left in their original Dutch
  • Spelling is quite important for Peranakan Chinese names. Dr Kwa Tjoan Sioe, not Kwa Tjoan Siu. Minor differences sometimes reflect regional variety: Oei is Central/East Javanese, while Oey is from Batavia/West Java. The new Indonesian spelling system also exempted personal names, so unless the individuals in question 'updated' the spelling of their names, we should stick to the old spelling.
  • I got rid of 'Dutch East Indies, Kingdom of the Netherlands' because the Dutch East Indies was constitutionally separate from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The colony maintained a separate army, a separate treasury and even had separate diplomatic representatives in the Middle East.
  • Do we not have a better and clearer picture of Thung Sin Nio?

Clara dari Semarang Thank you! I neither speak Dutch, nor Chinese, so I have to go with what the sources say. It always seems to me to take a village to write WP articles. I'm hip deep trying to finish an article for Asia month, but I'll circle back around in a day or so. Since it is nominated for Good Article, the references you inserted need to follow the same scheme as I use, but if you don't know how to do that, no worries, I'll convert them. I'd love a better picture, but I could find nothing on line. I am in Mexico, so lots of websites are blocked. If you can find one (or several), that'd be great. SusunW I'd be grateful if you could convert my references to your format as I don't know how to. I've added more information regarding Thung's maternal family, which seems pertinent given that Thung was engaged for a time to her maternal first cousin, Tan Sin Hok (well-known in his own right with an Indonesian wikipedia article of his own). I also found the following images online, but am not sure as to their copyright status:
Clara dari Semarang I'll gladly convert the references, but as there does not appear to be an on-line accessible copy of Haryono, you will need to insert page numbers. Give me a few minutes and I'll insert the reference links. Then in those links {{sfn|Haryono|2017|p=}} you will need to add the page number of the book after the p=. If it covers multiple pages, change the p to pp= and insert for example 1-3 for a range or 1, 3 if they are not consecutive. I hope that makes sense. The problem with the Atria photographs is that they do not appear to have been published. They are private images that were in her archive. If they were not published, we cannot add them to WP unless they were made before 1899. The second link you provided is where the current image was cropped. I'm done Clara dari Semarang. You will also need to input page numbers for Seng and Post, as they do not appear to be available on line. I was able to find an accessible link to the journal "Notulen van de Algemeene en Directie" and swapped the url out. SusunW (talk) 18:32, 28 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi @SusunW:, I'm happy to take on this review. Sorry it has languished in the queue for so ridiculously long. Hopefully we can move through this process quickly and you can free this part of your brain to work on something else. Looking forward to the read! Ajpolino (talk) 17:57, 24 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
•Medical practice and activism > "To reduce the argument that women did not actually desire the right to vote..." - "Reduce the argument" sounds odd to my ear. Could you rephrase it somehow to clarify? (unless you think it's a regional English thing that I've just missed, in which case carry on).
  1. B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    B. All in-line citations are from reliable sources, including those for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons—science-based articles should follow the scientific citation guidelines:
    C. It contains no original research:
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
There are certainly limitations to my ability to check the sources, but for whatever it's worth, it passes Earwig's test.
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
    B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
  4. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each:
  5. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
  6. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content:
It's a shame that there aren't other usable photos. Have you tried reaching out to Atria to ask about using some of their photos? I've had good luck getting university libraries to share material (though they often charge me a fee for their time). Doesn't hurt to ask. Perhaps if we ever learn Dutch we could make a more compelling case as well... Ajpolino (talk) 18:36, 24 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
I was all prepared to settle-in with my red pen, but this article is excellent and was a pleasure to read. It passes GA review with flying colors. If you could address the clarification request I made above, I'd be much obliged, but it's no reason to hold up the review. Thanks for the read. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. Happy editing! Ajpolino (talk) 18:36, 24 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Infobox edit

I was trying to add relatives and education to the infobox. Is the Teacher's College she went to the same as Hollandsche Chineesche School [id]? TJMSmith (talk) 19:57, 24 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
