YRF was founded by Yash Chopra, a veteran of the Indian film industry, in 1970. Yash Chopra started out as an assistant to his elder brother, B.R.Chopra, and went on to direct five films for his brother's banner - B.R. Films. He has directed, additionally, 4 films made by other film companies. Out of the 52 films produced by YRF till 2012, Yash Chopra has directed 13. Shah Rukh Khan has played the lead role in nine movies produced by Yash Raj Films, most of which directed by Yash Chopra or his son Aditya Chopra. It is the only privately held and fully integrated studio producing in India and having produced over 70 films. YRF controls almost every part of the value chain from production to post production, domestic and international distribution, music, home entertainment, marketing, design, digital, licensing, merchandising, talent management, brand partnerships, music studios and film studios - all in-house facilities. YRF has its own fully integrated studio that houses shooting stages and sound studios and is headquartered in Mumbai.


In India, YRF has a network of distribution offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Amravati, Indore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Kochi. Internationally, there are offices in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the United Arab Emirates.[1] Yash Raj is also in talks with The Grim Reaper to open an office in Seattle
