Magic Alex

According to two editors (Zephyrad and Justin (koavf)) the article should remain as Magic Alex, and not "Alex Mardas (Magic Alex)". This despite the fact that

• Magic Alex (discounting the title) is mentioned FIVE times.
• Alex (alone) is mentioned TWICE.
• Mardas is mentioned over SEVENTY times.

I agree it should probably be Alex Mardas, but the use of a second title in brackets is only used to disambiguate between different pages, so I can see why there were objections to that. Hope it doesn't stop you taking it to GA as it's a damn fine article. Well, thanks - but I'm sure someone else would have thought of a straw poll. I got in there first, that's all. It's a shame this is the best thing we can find to argue about - surely there are more important things to do. I can't help thinking The Beatles could be at FA by now if we hadn't wasted so much time. Soon all this will be over, and for it to flare up again would be even more pointless. Peer review page

I've just set this up. This would allow us to peer review Beatles related articles without clogging up the main Wikipedia peer review page. It will mean a faster review, and one by someone more familiar with the topic. No inheritance to WikiProject Albums

Albums with the Beatles talk page banner {{WPBeatles}} do not currently get categorized in Category:WikiProject Albums articles, the categorization used by Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums. Could someone add the functionality so The Beatles albums are also categorized in the albums categories (namely Category:Album articles by importance and Category:Album articles by quality).

Prior to my edit, the DEFAULT SORT there was in the "included" sections, overriding anything in the articles, thus putting them all in the "B" section and printing an error message on the page. Original research on Shakespeare in I Am the Walrus article

I have expressed some concerns about original research in this passage from I Am the Walrus:

In an amazing coincidence, Lear IV.6. is the only scene in all of Shakespeare (out of more than a thousand) that features both English homonyms for "Beatle" (only one other scene, II.1. of Henry 6 II, features either of those words more than once).[2] [3] In other words, the Beatles randomly added, in "real time" "found art," in "found art,"[4] the only scene from Shakespeare that features both the words "beadle" and "beetle".[5] [6][7]

The first two citations are to a Shakespeare concordance that only produces statistical results by searching for words in Shakespeare's works. It does not discuss anything; it does not note the "amazing coincidence" between the song and Shakespeare. That is clearly original research and/or or synthesized research. Likewise, the remaining sources do not discuss "found art" in relation to this specific song, making the the second sentence also original or synthesized research.

An anon editor has persistently re-inserted this information with no substantive change, despite being given an explanation of original research and Wikipedia's policies about original research. Ward3001 (talk) 17:47, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

It's all cobblers... A Beadle was a parish officer having various subordinate duties, as keeping order during services, waiting on the rector, etc. Shakespeare didn't have a dictionary, and spelt lots of words (sometimes 6 different ways) as he felt. Canonicity of The Beatles at Shea Stadium

There is a minor spat at Magical Mystery Tour (film) as to whether it's preceded by the Shea Stadium documentary; certainly it is a film about The Beatles but it does not seem to have been officially released. George Harrison or George Harold Harrison

There is some uncertainty over whether Harrison had a middle name. Dispute arises from a claim on shawstar.com that there is no Harold on Harrison's birth certificate, yet reliable sources give Harold as Harrison's middle name. New B-Class assessment scale!

Please check that all articles classified as B-Class have

I did them all last night (with a little help from my friend), and I've implemented the B-Class checklist - it's amazing how many articles were wrongly classified as B-Class: at least 3 redirects, 2 obvious stubs, some completely unsourced articles, and even a project space collection of trivia! As far as I know now, an article can't be assessed as B-Class without answering 'yes' to all the questions (but you can set GA, A and FA status, since these require the passing of an external review). There's also the possibility of an A-Class checklist - I'll look into that and see if that will make a decent improvement to the project. Dendodge Talk^Contribs 11:38, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Standardise importance?

We currently rate articles at whatever importance we feel like, so we have things everywhere. Here's my suggestion for a standardised scale - feel free to offer your own:

Top	The Beatles, The Beatles discography and History of The Beatles Band members Other important personnel (e.g. Epstein and Martin)
High	Albums Beatle wives
Mid	Songs Other family members
Low	Anything else

How honoured is short-form citation style for books?

Regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Beatles#Citations, how active and/or honored is this guideline for short-form cites for books, ie what is covered at Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Shortened_footnotes? The recommended short form of "<ref>Lewisohn 2003 p23</ref>" is a bit harsh in having no space between the 'p' and the page number, and I notice a lot of variation/deviation away from that in The Beatles and in the four members' articles. Also I see some use of short titles rather than years, which to me has more mnemonic value if slightly less compact. I've looked through the archives for past discussion on this, but didn't see any, unless I missed it in all the "the/The" drama. I'm about to go through and get all of George Harrison's book cites in short form, so I want to know what's the best form to use. Wasted Time R (talk) 02:31, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

American editions of albums

I would guess this has been discussed before (but I didn't find it), and I don't want to create an inordinate ruckus, but in looking at The Beatles navigation template and individual album pages I am very much bothered by the omission of the US album releases from the template. Prior to the release of cds, millions of American fans' knowledge of the Beatles came from their battered copies of Meet The Beatles!, The Beatles' Second Album, Beatles '65, etc. Of course they are not the "official" Beatle albums (and I have to say how exciting it was for me to buy vinyls of the "real" Beatles albums the first time I went to London in 1971), but I think we are doing a disservice to American fans and to the world of knowledge by not including these American editions in the nav box. If I'm looking at Please Please Me (the album), I want an easy way to navigate to the equivalent American album(s) and I want to see how they lined up and what their chronology was. I know the nav box is big, but I think adding a couple of lines won't hurt it, and it will be a significant improvement to our fine set of Beatles articles which right now tend to minimize the fact that the US played at least some tiny part in the fame and success of the band. For me it was the publication of the Roy Carr/Tony Tyler book The Beatles: An Illustrated Record in 1975 (a best-seller in the US) that clued me in that the British sequencing was the one that made artistic sense, and after that I started buying the British LPs as imports or bringing them back from England trips. Indeed it was only after that that I started really liking early Beatles, because now the artistic development was clearer. Then when I finally got the British Rubber Soul, I was upset a bit in the other direction because it didn't have the same wonderful folk flavor that everyone knew from the US one. So yes, the different experiences are meaningful. As for templates, both Template:The Rolling Stones and Template:The Animals show US albums, with the Stones one showing the sequence (I should probably change the Animals one to do this too). And the Stones template is just as big as the Beatles one. So there is precedent for doing this. Wasted Time R (talk) 22:14, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I looked further and see that the US editions were removed in October by an IP without any discussion or even edit summary - I have reinstated them. Someone might look at the other edits made on this template in that edit - I'm less familiar with the EPs but am not convinced they all should have been removed. Edit warring on Hey Jude

If anyone wishes to weigh in on a discussion I started on at Talk:Hey Jude#Jeremy and Marc Sinden in an attempt to avert an edit war, please take a look. Crowley666 has repeatedly added Jeremy and Marc Sinden as participants in the promotional video, claiming that they are the only two "positively identified" and "notable in their own right", which is true of other participants in the video. This clearly violates WP:WEIGHT and WP:N. He has edited a lot on articles for Jeremy and Marc Sinden, and I believe he's POV-pushing. He's not quite a WP:SPA, but it's close. Thanks. Legitimate Consensus on Hey Jude

A valid and interesting discussion about including or not including recently published facts (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-life-features/liverpool-special-features/2009/03/06/marc-sinden-on-john-lennon-we-were-in-the-presence-of-god-92534-23077241/) in the Hey Jude page seems to have ground to a halt on a side-issue on sockpuppets, IP users (such as me!) and warnings over perceived personal attacks. Two editors feel that the facts presented and sourced are either not vaild and/or trivial and seem unwilling to justify their exclusion and repeated deleation. However, I have never seen this information published before and in spite of one editors assertion that other participants in the video have been identified previously, but will not say where or who (apart from insisting, without any proof, that Twiggy was in it - untrue according to the new source), I feel that it is important historically to include the information so that other Wiki community users can at least get to read it and make their own mind up, as opposed to having it made up for them. So you can make an informed decision, the following is the 'offending' paragraph that is constantly deleated: The Beatles hired Michael Lindsay-Hogg to shoot the "Hey Jude" promotional film (he had previously directed a 'promo' film for "Paperback Writer") and they settled on the idea of filming with a live, albeit controlled audience. Hogg shot the film at Twickenham Film Studios on 4 September 1968, with McCartney himself designing the set. Tony Bramwell, a friend of the Beatles, later described the set as "the piano, there; drums, there; and orchestra in two tiers at the back." The event is also memorable as it marked Starr's return to the group after a two-week hiatus, during which he had announced that he had left the band. The eventual, final film was a combination of several different takes (twelve having been filmed during the entire days session, according to the actor Marc Sinden who was in the film along with his brother Jeremy) and included filmed 'introductions' to the song by David Frost (who introduced the Beatles as "the greatest tea-room orchestra in the world") and Sir Cliff Richard, for their respective, eponymous TV programmes. As filming wore on, Lennon repeatedly asked Lindsay-Hogg if he had the footage he needed. After twelve takes, McCartney said, "I think that's enough" and filming concluded. It was first aired on 8 September 1968 and the film was later broadcast for the United States on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on 6 October 1968. Note that the much larger issue here is sockpuppetry and vote-stacking, regardless of whether the information about the Sindens should be included. This particular information was subject to extensive sockpuppetry by Captainclegg by use of numerous sockpuppets. Once this was discovered Captainclegg was initially blocked, but the blocking admin agreed to unblock after Captainclegg promised to never be a puppetmaster again. Then, after a new discussion began on the issue, Captainclegg promised to stay out of it (which he did not do), and comments from multiple IPs with few or no other edits beyond that issue, all located in a restricted geographic range, began appearing in the discussion. Some of us have become very concerned that there might be ongoing sockpuppetry. Another editor and I have suggested restricting any consensus decision to registered editors. I welcome comments on Talk:Hey Jude from registered editors involved in WikiProject The Beatles. And once again, I emphasize that the larger issue (sockpuppetry and the integrity of Wikipedia) is of much greater concern than the specific contents of Hey Jude. Right, I'm getting seriously ticked off here. I am being accused of being behind everything. Any moment now I fully expect to be accused of being behind Kennedys assassination! On 9 March I admitted to having "multiple accounts". I had made a mistake, I apologized publicly and gave my word that I would not repeat such a stupid action. I was unblocked the following day. I have kept to my word. Now (15 March) I read that Ward3001 is STILL going on about it. If I register my legitimate vote (as I did) on the Hey Jude matter I am accused of getting involved and if I stay silent (which I had done) I am accused obliquely of being behind every IP user who has an opinion on the subject at hand on Wikipedia. I can't win. I am NOT a puppetmaster. I am NOT running any sockpuppets. I do NOT have multiple accounts any more. I have NEVER edited other than through my account. I am NOT, as I have said before, Mobydick or any IP addresses shown in this debate. I am NOT responsible for anyone else’s opinion on this debate. If someone could please tell me how I can prove that I am not anyone else, I would be very grateful. I find it incredible that a half-dozen or more IP editors are all worked up over an inconsequential paragraph in the "Hey Jude" article. None have any edits except to talk pages about this issue. That's very suspicious, and while they may or may not be IP puppets, they clearly have a shared agenda.

Meanwhile, after a sockpuppet investigation where multiple accounts were confirmed to be controlled by Captainclegg, he admitted to being a puppet master. His claim above that "I have NEVER edited other than through my account" is a lie; he most certainly did edit using other accounts, and was involved in a few other minor skirmishes while using those accounts. He apparently does not understand how serious an offense this is. It's going to take a long time for me to trust him or his edits and I think he should stay completely out of the "Hey Jude" debate.

I said at the top of this article, when asking for a wider consensus, that the main issue on the Talk:Hey Jude page was being muddied with peripheral arguments that two editors were apparently unwilling to leave aside and I see that they are just proving my point on this page as well, plus the note Ward3001 has now left on my talk page warning that he will block me. I am not going to waste time and lower myself to respond to his peculiar statements, beligerent attitude, threats and inaccurate insinuations regarding me and/or Clegg (who, for the final time I am NOT connected with) but his constant, obsessive fixation with sockpuppetry conspiracy has yet again meant that he has not read what I had written in the Talk:Hey Jude page. Namely, that I am not interested in the Sinden’s inclusion per se, but the knowledge that the source brings us (and no, I am NOT connected with the Sinden’s or the Liverpool Post either). Other editors seem to have appreciated this and agreed. Do please check the detail before you make any more erroneous accusations. If however he does see his threat through and block me from participating, which I believe to be his intention, I trust in the integrity of other Wiki users to keep up the fight to allow accurate, sourced knowledge to be published. This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. P.S. Love Me Do

I was just going through the MPL catalog to see what kinds of songs they have the publishing rights to, and I came across a song called "P.S. Love Me Do". It turns out to be a medley of "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You", performed almost a capella by Paul McCartney by Paul McCartney without him playing an instrument, apparently during a 1990 concert (tour?). Hi, fellow Beatles fans! I'd love to translate some articles from the English wiki to the Dutch one, since there are a lot missing. But can I translate it without interfering copyright rules? Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

• The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
• The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
• I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
  • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
  • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
  • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
• The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
• The data is now retained indefinitely.
• The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
• Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [8]

Archive Bots

I'm upset with whomever decided to make use to the archive bots to archive the talk pages, both here and at Talk:The Beatles. Strangely, they're not even the same bots! Either way, though, the bots do incremental archiving, which just makes things really hard to follow because they don't do it in any logical grouping. They simply wait for some threads to get old or some archive pages to get to a certain size threshold, and then they just archive random bits. Because it's an automated system, it makes mistakes when guessing where one section starts, and another one begins. And, as if that weren't bad enough, at least one of the bots went back and "consolidated" the archives that I had done by hand. This just screws up the history even more.

I don't know what to propose to make things better, as it would be quite a burden to go back and fix things by hand. I know how tedious it is to do it by hand, and I know that I'm obviously not always around to do it, but I am here to express my disdain for the new status quo. —Gordon P. I notice the Apple Records discography is listed here as requiring a cleanup. I recently did a complete revamp of the article and would be interested to know what the WikiProject members think about it. Can anymore be done to improve it? No controversy over omitted material in the Mono set?

I posted the following at The Beatles in Mono and am cross-posting it here, too: Considering the costs of the box sets, I'm surprised there's no controversy over the fact the Mono set omits the DVD bonus, as well as the remaining albums. Stereo or mono notwithstanding, it forces people to spend hundreds more if they want a complete canon, or having to deal with the stereo versions and skip this one if they want the full set plus the DVD. (I know when the boxes were announced I assumed the Mono set would include the mono mixes where applicable both otherwise be complete; when I found out otherwise I didn't bother buying either set). And in some places - Amazon.com for certain - the mono set is more expensive. Hasn't there been any criticism as to how this was handled? If so, it should be noted. On a related note, I have heard anecdotally that the Beatles releases are being called the last hurrah for the CD format. This too needs to be included in both this article and the Stereo set article, if a source can be located, of course. 68.146.81.123 (talk) 15:07, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Side selections

Someone is screwing up the side selections for the individual Beatle albums. For example with Magical Mystery Tour an editor insists on making the first track of side two selection 7 when it obviously should be selection 1. I have never seen a side two label which lists the first track as number 7. Please monitor the album articles to make sure each side begins with track one. I think it may be the CD issues that are causing someone to think this change should be made, as CDs of course don't have two sides. A quick glance at my old 1987 Sgt. Pepper shows tracks 1-13, and Revolver shows tracks 1-14. Perhaps some kind of note (or hidden comment) should be made in the articles, explaining that the side selections relate to the vinyl originally issued. PL290 (talk) 17:43, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Someone is trying to make MMT an original British LP.

Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962 GA Review

The article has been assessed for GA status and simply needs the lead expanding to meet the requirements in WP:Lead, and some additional background information to explain more fully the presence of The Beatles in Hamburg. I am putting the article on hold for seven days to allow this to be done. The nominator and main contributor has not logged Wikipedia since 16 September. Rubber Soul

Get rid of article to-do lists?

Is it time to clear out the article to-do lists? Unless used regularly and kept current, they're likely to do more harm than good when well-meaning new editors look at them for the first time. There's such a lot of random old stuff on there from days gone by. For instance, these excerpts from Talk:Paul_McCartney/to_do:

• Paul's drumming is not notable IMHO.
• ABOVE LIST NEEDS TO BE CHECKED AND COMPLETED ITEMS REMOVED
• Why is the first page a list of his records? Records covered at length below.
• 'Keen football fan' - hardly. None of the Beatles were big football fans. Macca has suggested he's a fan of both Liverpool and Everton, but this is more local diplomacy rather than a genuine enthusiasm for the game. Sentence needs removing.
• What happened to the text on the Ram/Imagine episode? I thought I'd put some in?

I question how many editors actually look at the to-do list anyway. The transclusion means it doesn't automatically get watchlisted with the talk page. Are there any articles where the to-do list is actually put to good use? I propose we clear them out and simply use the discussion pages to progress any improvement suggestions that come up.
