Phone type at Montauk Point Lighthouse

A crank phone in the era of rotary dials?

Its odd appearance and its location make me suspect it never connected to a telephone exchange but is a sound-powered telephone for talking to one specific place, such as keeper's house to tower or front gate or similar. I don't have anything to add with respect the deletion of Category:Telecommunications terms. However, there seems to be inconsistency in the use of the terms "Telecommunication" and "Telecommunications." There is a Wikipedia article "Telecommunication" yet this WP is Telecommunications. The confusing history of AT&T

AT&T is a company (or maybe two or more) with a history that is confusing to non-experts - especially since a company split off from AT&T later bought the old AT&T and took its name. Ring tone

Hello! In the "Telephone numbers in [Country]" articles, what do you think about adding a section on "ring tone"? The BT phone book used to do it back in the day, but now even their site doesn't have it. Basically, it had a list of all the different types of tone at the beginning of the "International dialling codes" section and described each one, something like this -

• A: ——     ——     ——
• B: – –     – –     – –
• C: -  -  -  -

And so on, while for each country it had:

• Free line ring tone: A
• Engaged line ring tone: C

And so on. The explanation on the different types of tone can be hyperlinked to with {{ }} brackets and done as a special "Wikipedia Help" article similar to the Help:IPA for English type articles.

Area code 619, and unexplained "NANP"

This is about two issues, so I'll subsection them out.

Unexplained "NANP"

I'm not a telecom person, so when I saw a mention -- two mentions -- of "NANP" on Area code 619 with no explanation or link, I thought "What's that?". I scrolled down a screenful or two, found a probable implicit explanation, checked it, and added a link.

I wondered how many other pages had the same problem. So I ran a search, refined it a few times, and found

Results 1–37 of 37 for NANP -China -"North American Numbering Plan" "area code"

(-China rules out hits for "Nanping", such as Telephone numbers in China.)

That's too many for me to fix, and this seemed like the best place to report them.

Split date of Area code 619

But first I went to Talk:Area code 619 to see if there was anything about it. No, but two of the three comments -- from 2006 and 2009 -- assert that the split date given on the page is wrong. The history is way too complicated for me (see above) to figure out just which is which, and the reference given for the date there now is 404; I tagged it as a Dead link.

(And the comment in the middle should probably be checked too.)

Proposed deletion of unused area codes

96.236.155.40 has proposed deletion of articles on unused area codes: Area code 565, Area code 230, Area code 966, Area code 200, Area code 733, Area code 565. I think, at a minimum, these should be retained as redirects to List of North American Numbering Plan area codes. Before I make that change, perhaps someone wants to make an argument for retaining them as they are. ~KvnG 14:25, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Looking for an editor to help at Verizon

Hello, I'm an employee of Verizon Communications, and am looking to make some updates to that article, specifically related to marketing efforts and sponsorship section, which in the current article is simply a list of venues that carry the Verizon name. I've drafted a new pair of sections about Verizon's marketing and sponsorship efforts, and uploaded it to my userspace.

Because I have a conflict of interest, though, I won't make these edits myself. Instead, I'm hoping an editor from here would be able to take a look at what I've prepared and, if it seems appropriate, move it over into the article, removing the current list of sponsored venues when they do. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Good reference for "antennas need to be about the size of the wavelength"?

Many of the articles I edit have to do with ever-increasing frequencies of equipment during the 1930s and 40s. One of the many advantages of using shorter wavelengths is that your half-wave dipole gets smaller, which makes it easier to mount.

All of the references I have either don't mention anything like that, or are simply a bunch of formulas. That's fine for me, but useless for generalist articles. I'd much prefer to use one that clearly states that antennas have to be about the wavelength long, or close to it, and simply illustrate why this is.

Chu–Harrington limit talks about the trade off when you try to go smaller - the Q factor increases and the bandwidth available is reduced. The reference is here,[1] with tradeoffs explained, but it is still too technical for your use. Also other antenna textbooks I have do not simply state the relation either. Updating the infobox on Verizon Communications article

Hello, I'm hoping an editor here might be able to help update the infobox on the Verizon Communications article. I've posted a few suggestions on the Verizon Talk page to bring the information there up-to-date. I've also included a comment about a recent edit that I'm hoping editors here might be able to look at and see what they think.

As I've mentioned previously here, I'm an employee of Verizon, and won't make any of these edits myself.

Looking for an editor to help with Verizon Enterprise Solutions article

Hello, I'm back with another request that I'm hoping an editor can help me with. Currently, the article for Verizon Enterprise Solutions is very short, so I drafted a more thorough version of the article and uploaded it to my userspace.

As I've noted previously here, I'm an employee of Verizon, so I don't make any edits to articles myself. I'm thus hoping an editor can take a look at what I've written and, if the material looks okay, move it over to replace the current, short article. I'm also open to any feedback editors might have.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. LATAs and exchange code protection

I've been seeing this bizarre statement in a few individual area code articles, like area code 618: "The supply of numbers is further limited because much of 618 is part of the St. Louis LATA; some exchanges in Missouri's 314 and 636 are not available as '618-nxx' numbers."

What does a LATA have to do with exchange code protection? Two points can be in the same LATA without being a local call, a seven-digit call or even in the same area code. I presume the limit is on assigning the same local seven-digit number in two different area codes in the same seven-digit local calling area, so bringing LATAs into this (aren't they those Russian cars?) is merely adding unneeded confusion, but I thought I should ask here first. Fixing errors in Verizon FiOS introduction

Hello WikiProject Telecommunications watchers. Can anyone here help correct a couple of inaccuracies recently added to the introduction of the Verizon FiOS article? In addition to an error regarding the number of people who have access to Verizon FiOS TV and Internet, editors recently deleted from the lead sentence that FiOS operates on a fiber-optic network. Many "Radio station ITU" related stubs being spawned with little content.

A user has created Template:Radio station ITU, and created the articles it now links to. Most of them seem threadbare and possibly worth of speedy deletion, while some others which already existed have had their generic, non technical lead sections replaced with a definition from the ITU. Could someone from this WikiProject take look, it seems like rather a mess. (Hohum ^@) 02:06, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

The related changes to Radio station and Radar beacon (racon) seem to make those articles generally worse too. I've reverted once, but now I'll leave it to someone on the project who will likely know the subject better than me. (Hohum ^@) 16:52, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Submarine signalling

A good number of articles describe ships as equipped for "submarine signalling, which for a time was considered an alternative to radio", for example here and here. But there is no explanation or link to help the novices understand what it is or its significance. It has been suggested that it is part of underwater acoustic communication, but not at present linkable, I think. Is this within the scope of this Project? Good afternoon WikiProject Telecommunications members, I would like to draw your attention to a request for an article on Unlockd on the Requested articles list. Unlockd has been written about by TechCrunch, the Wall Street Journal, CNN the Australian Financial Review, the Sydney Morning Herald and many other publications.

Unlockd is a platform that lets Android users earn bonuses such as extra data or discounts on their bill by viewing ads when they unlock their phone. It is based in Melbourne, Australia and has investors including Lachlan Murdoch.

Unlockd launched in the US with Boost Mobile, a subsidiary of Sprint Telecom, in January 2016 and is about to launch in the UK with another major carrier.

Updating Verizon Wireless article

Hello WikiProject Telecommunications watchers. Earlier this month I posted an edit request on the Verizon Wireless Talk page asking editors to review my suggested updates to the article's introduction and its RootMetrics RootScore Awards section. Drafts for the new introduction and RootMetrics section are in my user space.

I recently worked with volunteer editors to update the Verizon Wireless article, and the proposed introduction does a better job of summarizing the article's contents than the existing one. The RootMetrics RootScore Awards section on the live article is a bulleted list that takes up a lot of space. My draft puts the same information in a compact table, making the existing content easier to read and visualize.

Updating Verizon Fios article

WikiJournal of Science promotion

The WikiJournal of Science is a start-up academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's scientific content. It is part of a WikiJournal User Group that includes the flagship WikiJournal of Medicine.. Like Wiki.J.Med, it intends to bridge the academia-Wikipedia gap by encouraging contributions by non-Wikipedians, and by putting content through peer review before integrating it into Wikipedia. Anyone have a working RIPterm?

I found a library of public RIPscript samples, and I would like to use one of them to add some flavour to the Remote Imaging Protocol article. Does anyone out there have a working version of a RIP-capable terminal that could render them for us? Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:10, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

radio/TV transmitters and towers

I find that the radio/TV generators (transmitters) and their towers/masts are usually discussed in the same article. But I find the articles are variously categorized into Category:Radio masts and towers, Category:Communication towers and Category:Broadcast transmitters and their subcategories with neither rhyme nor reason and no explanation.
