There's a couple of excellent resources I would like to recommend to anyone involved with this project:

Umm, images uploaded to Wikipedia are definitely not for use only on Wikipedia. Please read the image use policy. Wikipedia's content is specifically meant to be copied and reproduced by anyone, even for commercial purposes. Images with non-free licenses are not wanted. Fair-use images are accepted only grudgingly since fair-use usually only applies to reproduction within the U.S.

To make sure that you are accurately representing how requested material may be used, you should use or adapt an example from Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission in your request. --Kbh3^rdtalk 04:48, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Folks:

I need a little help. I'm a contributor to the Wiki St. Louis. We are having a debate over whether to include a quote by T.S. Eliot on the page. I'm the proponent of placing the quote as a sort of: preamble to the whole shebang.

If I don't hear from you at this page within 7 days from Friday April 7, 2006, I am moving the quote back to where it came from. It seems to me you were plenty "quick on the draw" to move it, but have nothing to say since Birgitte "corrected" your complaint.

If you do you'll be violating policy as well as breaking layout conventions. Making that quote the "preamble" to the article forces the article (and by extension, Wikipedia) to adopt the point of view that St. Louis is a wonderful city to live in and better than Boston, New York, or London. After all, the great T.S. Eliot said so and we must agree since we think that quote should represents the purpose or basis of the rest of the article (that is what a preamble is for, you know). However, placing it in a Quotations section is fine because then the quote is just presented as information relevant to the city. Additionally, the Wikipedia Guide to Layout prescribes quotations to be placed, if not embedded within the article text itself, in a Quotations section like I have created. And nowhere on that page or any other does it provide any provisions for articles having preambles. You won't find another article on Wikipedia that uses a preamble like what you're suggesting and certainly not one consisting of just a quote. GT 08:26, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't think having a quote about St. Louis from an author "forces" a POV upon anybody or anything. It's a common practice in other neutral documents, such as ... encyclopedias. I am, however, concerned that we'd have this one article with a quote and no others that do, it's inconsistant. Having a little quote box is a common stylistic device to convey information in a more interesting and less academic and dry manner than rote categorization. Bjsiders 14:53, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I understand and if someone wants to create that box and insert it in part of the article where T.S. Eliot is discussed the same way a graphic would be inserted, I wouldn't have any problems with that whatsoever. However this was discussed and placed as a "preamble", which by its nature gives the impression that the opinion of the writers and of the encyclopedia agree with T.S. Eliot that one would be fortunate to grow up in St. Louis rather than the other big cities. Irrelevant as it is, I don't know if such things are acceptible in other encyclopedias, seeing as though I haven't opened a printed encyclopedia since high school, but on Wikipedia writers are not allowed to make such statements of opinion on the subjects they're writing about. GT Please note that niether Wikipedia:Describing points of view] or Wikipedia:Guide to layout are officail policy. I realize that you do not like the quotation, but please do not tell people they will be breaking policy. As I said before, this quote does not make the article POV. It is obviously an opinion. lets look at it again:

The author says he feels "affected" and "fortunate." This is not POV about how great St Louis is, it is personal experience. The quote clearly states he was born in St. Louis which puts it in proper perspective. Anyone who reads it will give it the same weight they give anyone who was "born in thier favorite city." When I said policy I linked to WP:NPOV. Please don't misattribute statements to me that I didn't make. As far as the layout conventions, they may not be policy but I don't see a pressing reason to break them. Quoting is not POV. Especially in this example, which is clearly his personal experience. Maybe if the quote said "St. Louis is a better city than New York," you could convince me. What is the bias here? Is it baised to say the city someone was born in has a greater affect on them than any other? Is biased to say a person feels lucky they were born in the city they grew up in? I don't know how else to explain it. This quote does not break policy, no one should worry on that aspect. Obviously you still don't like it. Many other people do like it. I certainly prefer it over a quotations section. Sorry about the misunderstanding above, I struck my comments. The layout conventions not closely adhered to and self-contradictory. They say that there should be a Quotation section and then stated it should be removed and replaced with a banner to Wikiquote. It looks like we can all agree on the graphic quote box though. I agree, it's very common and unremarkable to be proud of the city you were born in. That's why I originally said I don't even think the quote should be in the article. But if the rest of you want it in the form of a quote box near discussion of famous natives or something, that's your decision to make, as it's not that big of a deal to me. The idea of a "preamble" in particular (and specifically, one that is overwhelmingly favorable about the city) is what I have problems with as I've gone into detail about already. The quote is an illustration from a notable native. The photos in this article are also illustrations. The photos are terribly POV in that they "promote" the city. Why not feature photos from inside the public toilets in the city's main train station? I think the way a city keeps its toilets serves as a strong indicator of a city's overall quality of life (seriously). Many would argue, however, that this article's photos are indeed encyclopedic and suitable. I won't argue the point. However, all the justifications these people would use in defending glamorous photos of the city should also apply to Elliot's quote. His quote provides a unique and beautiful tribute to the city. The fact that other encyclopedias occasionally introduce an article with a literary quotation simply adds weight to this and previous arguments. Please replace the preamble, provide some new justification for not using it, or start replacing the beautiful illustrations with those of more "typical" experiences. If you have better photos that more accurately and correctly represent the city then feel free to upload them and insert them in the article. As it stands, the current ones do a good job and I have no problems with them. I agree about the toilets and I encourage you to conduct a study of public toilets in every big city in America and report on the results (just not here). If St. Louis has interesting results then I'd support mentioning them here.

And, beautiful as you may find the quote to be, we are not here to make a tribute. That should give you an idea of why it's an inappropriate "preamble", as though such a thing were possible here. GT 06:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

It would seem that you missed the point. 1) The photos provided are POV tributes to the city. 2) The photos provided are typical of photos that illustrate just about every city article (see East St. Louis, Illinois - and don't need to be replaced. 3) the quote is not atypical of articles about home cities of famous authors.

It's a fact that Elliot wrote what he did, and it is included as a fact, as a real illustration. The fact that Elliot's comments reflect his POV might disqualify them, except that folks tend to be interested in reading the comments of Nobel Prize recipients.

Lastly, why is it you seem to be the only one arguing for removal? Please stop and consider this. Rklawton 13:44, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Missouri State Highways

Since these are part of the WikiProject Missouri State Highways, a child of this project, would it be redundant to list these as part of the MO WikiProject also?Rt66lt

Category:Missouri railroads

Someone who knows more about this than I do should probably check over this category. There are some railroads categorized as Missouri railroads, but nothing in the articles states they are in Missouri. Conrail and Southern Pacific are a couple.Rt66lt 17:24, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Missouri History Stub

I would like to request that a Missouri History Stub be created. I recently add a Generic Missouri Stub to the St. Louis Arsenal page, but I think there should be a stub for history. The picture for the stub could be a picture of Lewis and Clark since they are important to Missouri History, since they travel across the state, and since St. Louis just had a big celebration about it two years ago.

There is a movement to try and elimanate the Missouri Generic Stub. Go to the Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion page and scroll down to April 23rd. It is the second one down on the list. Vote to say our stub!

Missouri State Fair needs rewriting

I just flagged Missouri State Fair as being a copyright violation from http://www.mostatefair.com/beginning.html. We need a new article there. I've invited the original author, who copied the material, to help contribute to an original article. Anyone else who wants to jump in, please do

By the way, folks, it was pretty durn obvious from the prose that that article was not the original work of a wikipedian. Please keep an eye out for such violations. To test, just cut the core of a unique-looking sentence and paste it into Google with quotes around it. In this case, searching on "prompts a Missouri farm family to load up the kids" immediately found the source.

I just reorganized (and added a little content to) the page for former Governor Bob Holden. It still needs a lot more info about his governorship, imo. Crime and Social issues of St. Louis, Missouri

The section in the St. Louis, Missouri article on social and crime issues is not a summary of the main article Crime and Social issues of St. Louis, Missouri...it IS the main article. Either way, both of these need to be cleaned up. Could someone lend a hand in doing that? I'm not an expert on St. Louis, especially not its social/crime issues. Nominate articles for Portal:United States

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Missouri (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. Abraham McClellan Deletion Proposal

User:Somerset219 has proposed that the article I created on former Missouri State Treasurer Abraham McClellan (Missouri politician) be deleted. Marlin Perkins

Marlin Perkins (Mo native) article is incorrect. He did not fake lemmings jumping off a cliff. If you read the article cited it is clear that the lemmings incident was about Disney not Perkins.

Project banner

As I was browsing Category:WikiProject banners, I noticed that your {{WikiProject Missouri}} was incorrectly added to the talk pages. It appears that someone copied the code (after hitting the edit button on the template page) and then copied that into articles. As it is a project banner, it would probably be best not to substitute it, but if this project would prefer to have it substituted, the code would be {{subst:WikiProject Missouri}}. Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Brentwood, Missouri

I feel that the Wikipedia page for Brentwood, Missouri should be changed. Not only did Brentwood High school win the 2009 National Blue Ribbon of Excellence, so did one of Brentwoods elementary Schools. Mark Twain Elementary of Brentwood, Missouri won the the Missouri Gold Star School Honor and the National Blue Ribbon of Excellence for 2009. This is a very big Honor not only for Brentwood to have two schools ranked this high out of all united states schools, but also a huge Honor for Mark Twain, which is being overlooked! Missouri articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Missouri articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

Totally fabricated Wikipedia contribution...The Westplex

The fabricated entry referencing 'The Westplex' regarding the origination of the term describing the growing western counties of the St. Louis, MO. metro area is disturbing. The verifiable true origination of the area's name follows. In November of 1991, radio station owners of Kaspar Broadcasting, Vernon John Kaspar and Steven Charles Kaspar put a new radio station on the air to service the west metro area of St. Louis...99.9 FM KFAV (All Hit V100). In September of 1991, preparing to put the station on the air (went on the air in early November, 1991) a decision was made to name St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, and Franklin Counties "The Westplex"...as the Dallas, Tx. area towards Fort Worth is called "the Metroplex"... It is a well known fact with the mayors, businesses, community leaders, etc. that the term "Westplex" originated as stated...NOT some fictional "Zigmund" etc. etc. The general description of the area is correct, however the Wiki contributer committed a treacherous crime against historical accuracy, as the term "Westplex" has stuck as a term for 19 years (1991 to 2010), so will surely be a stable term into the future, making the historical accuracy critical. This blatant fictitious posting is most likely an attack against the Kaspars and their successful radio operation. I'm fairly certain I know the source, from a regional competitor of questionable integrity. There is no human being that "Westplex" was named after, and there is no source to prove it. I was present in the conference room at Kaspar Broadcasting when the term was given birth, and there is an abundance of proof and witnesses. Collaboration with the Wine Project on Missouri wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of Missouri wine. Some suggestion on potential article creations include History of Missouri wine and Missouri Wine and Grape Program. Another idea would be creating articles on notable wineries such as Augusta Winery and Montelle Winery etc. On a smaller scale, there are Missouri wine related articles that could use some help with clean up or expanding beyond a stub such as the articles on Hermann AVA, Ozark Highlands AVA, Ozark Mountain AVA, Les Bourgeois Winery, Stone Hill Winery, Hermann Jaeger, etc. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Missouri wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Missouri wine articles. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Kinloch, Missouri

The {{Portal|Missouri}} template was missing and a great deal of history about this oldest of Missourian black communities was added. What I don't understand and would like some sources on was South Kinloch a municipality with it's own mayor or did that happen after Berkeley split away? My entire research and work came from just trying to answer a simple question: when was Kinloch founded? Kinloch Park and it's golf course, race track, balloon airfield, servant home zoning in the south seems to be founded in 1885 or abouts. The Kinloch School District was founded in 1902 as a break away from Ferguson. It seems technically with the election of a black school board member in 1924 that Kinloch was a racially mixed community and not officially a black community till the break away of Berkeley in 1938. Sources and analysis would be nice. Another source claims Kinloch to be grown by land purchasing similar to Brooklyn Illinois during it's formation in the 1830's. Well, this place seems to be slightly more active than WikiProject St. Louis, so let's give it a try. Growing American Youth was nominated for speedy deletion recently, but I untagged it because from an extremely cursory search it looked to have plenty of coverage in papers like the Post-Dispatch. However, I'm not a P-D subscriber (it's pay-per-view), so while I can tell that it has this coverage, I can't actually look at the coverage in order to add to the article. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

I still actively patrol many of the WikiProject Missouri pages for vandalism. Several others, for example Grey Wanderer, do too. I've also created new Missouri-related Wikis and enhanced several others in recent months. Perhaps just not ones on the project "to do" list. Don't mistake a lack of discussions here as neccessarily a sign of dormancy. It just means we're going about our business without folks having many "beefs" that need resolved. I would not be in favor of any sort of "takeover" of WikiProject Missouri by you personally Kumioko or by WikiProject United States. I would be interested in knowing who this unnamed "someone" is that suggested our inactivity. Strange assertion in Eldon entry

Hmmm. That IS a little unusual. Never knew of an illegal newspaper either except in some communist nation or 3rd world dictatorship. It appears the info was added about 18 mos. ago by a onw-time-only editor. Legal probably refers to it being the "official" paper of the community for the publishing of legal notices (e.g., tax sale notices, zoning notices, etc.). Weaubleau-Osceola structure

The Weaubleau-Osceola structure page needs some major edits. I have completed some of those edits today as it is currently known as the Weaubleau structure. The title still needs to be changed but I do not have the ability to do that as of yet since I signed up today. I would like to do a complete rewrite of the article in the future when I get more time. A lot of information is missing that has been published over the last few years. I understand why with the cost of the journals and articles. If there is anything specific anyone would like to see added please let me know. I will try to be as thorough as possible but I may still forget or overlook something.

Some issues I plan on addressing are: 38th parallel structures, serial impact hypothesis, breccias, age, and round rocks. I may included some information on local target lithology and a model for the formation of the structure. Concerning the "Portage Des Sioux, Missouri" page

To whom it may concern,

I was reading up on the midwest and arrived at this article and disagree with some of its content; namingly the part that says: "The city was founded in 1799 by Spanish Lt. Gov. Zenon Trudeau and François Saucier in reaction to American plans to build a military post about twelve miles (19 km) downstream."

I can assure you that the names Trudeau and Saucier are very much French and not Spanish. 1. I don't know anything about the history of Portage Des Sioux.
2. The Third Treaty of San Ildefonso was concluded in 1800, so as of 1799 the territory was indeed Spanish.
3. The Spanish established no real presence in Upper Louisiana which remained overwhelmingly French in character during the ~36 years of Spanish political control. I could believe that the Spanish employed the local French establishment in the governance of that enormous area, though I have no citation for such at the moment.
4. Zenon Trudeau is listed as the Lieutenant Governor of Spanish Upper Louisiana at the time in question.
5. Without knowing more about Monsieur/Señor Trudeau, I would not make emphatic declarations as to his nationality or allegiance based solely upon his surname.
6. Questions and challenges such as this are more appropriately placed on the talk page of the article in question.

Sorry, but as written the article doesn't seem to pass muster. The main issue is all the information about the convenience store, what it offers, and that the business is for sale. Hawaiian delegation

While Prince David Kawananakoa did indeed lead the Hawaiian Delegation to the convention, there are several primary sources (including Honolulu Republican 31 August 1900, p1) that mention Native Hawaiian delegate John Henry Wise as the one who cast the deciding vote on the 16-1 measure mentioned. One source (Hawaiian Star, 1 July 1904) writes "The Washington Star confuses Wise with Prince David who was also a delagate."

Missouri county Politics sections

Currently, all Missouri counties have lengthy Politics sections, and it seems not one is referenced and they are also somewhat outdated. I propose removing any unreferenced Missouri county Politics section. - Gilliam (talk) 18:01, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Splitting the state into geographical areas

I've noticed that Category:Missouri geography stubs is oversized (pvwer 4 pages). The best way to deal with this problem, IMO, would be to devide the state into a few areas (by county) - and then sort the per-county stub tags into these areas - like we've done with Virginia and New York. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Betty Cooper Hearnes-separate article

Betty Cooper Hearnes should have her article be brought back. She had a separate political career by serving in the Missouri House of Representatives. State legislators are consider notable. Betty Hearnes may had been First Lady of Missouri but that fact alone should not had her article be merged with that of her husband Warren Hearnes. State Parks

Hi everyone. I've taken up as a project to flesh out & expand some of the wiki entries on Missouri state parks. I need some advice / questions: 1) Does anyone know of a template for an infobox that could be standardized for all parks with a list of possible amenities (boating, cabins, equestrian trails, etc) then the ones available at each specific one could be checkmarked, etc. I'm not skilled at creating new infoboxes, so I'd like to just alter an existing template if possible. Make sense? 2) Would using pics of various state parks grabbed off of the official Mo. DNR websites be allowable for use in wiki entries under "fair use" doctrine or "public" yada yada? We have some beautiful parks here in our state, would be a shame to not show them off in the articles with some pics. Some of the Wiki Commons rules get so draconian and confusing it just makes my head spin! lol Sector001 (talk) 02:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Thanks for catching that Outback. I've been reworking the correct one, Wes ShoeMYER, but nver knew there was an orphan out there with his last name spelled wrong. Auto-assessment of article classes

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
