Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

 • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

  Technical news

 • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

 • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

Yaarann username

Hi, I am in no way connected to this user Yaarann, I didn't even know this user existed until you asked me today. I was paid by the Vivo team to write the Kevin George page, I did not work with Yaarann on this project At ALL. I do not even know who that is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djt7572 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

@Djt7572: In that case, you need to explain why your article uses literally the same text as theirs in many places - word-for-word. It is impossible for that to be a coincidence, so I ask you again - how did you come to add identical content to a blocked account? Yunshui  22:08, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
@Yunshui: I copied the text that was given by the group who paid me to contribute Kevin George. They supplied this text, maybe it is from the same place, I don't know. How long will this article review take?
Since you are not the original author of the text, you cannot legally upload it under the required CC-BY-SA licence. I have deleted the draft as a copyright violation. See WP:DCM for the necessary release process that your client (not you) needs to follow to allow the use of this text on Wikipedia. Yunshui  12:08, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Tarick Salmaci

hi Yunshui. Would you mind watching this for a bit? Every now and then an IP (or IPs) shows up to try and remove unfavorable sourced content and add favorable unsourced content to the article. I've already gone to WP:RPP but I'm not sure how that will turn out. I'm guessing that the person(s) behind the account(s) most likely have a COI (perhaps its even the subject of the article himself) and previous attempts to try and get them to discuss on the article's talk page always received no response. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:29, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Little star icon duly clicked! Yunshui  07:26, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
Although the excellent Lectonar, Lord of Page Protections, has already done the necessary. Yunshui  07:35, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks to both you and Lectonar. It seems to only happen in brief spurts so PP should be sufficient at this time. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:15, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Just a comment

Regarding [1], I think there would be some people who think you are being anti-semitic by conflating a topic ban on anti-semitism and the Holocaust with ... Israel. There was a Twitter account harassing people for that, but thankfully it has been suspended. Hopefully it won't be suspended, or that tweeter doesn't come back, because I believe you will likely be in the crosshairs for that comment. starship.paint (talk) 14:36, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

I am not conflating anything with anything else; Sir Joseph asked me to explain why I thought the block for violating his topic ban was set at one month rather than a shorter length, and I offered some possible reasons why the users who contributed to the discussion might have felt that his previous blocks were relevant. Believe it or not, I kinda sympathised with the guy - note the past tense, there: he'd clearly rather pick a fight with me than deal with the actual reason for the block, and he's welcome to do so, but I'm past caring and don't expect or intend to engage any further with the discussion on his talkpage.Yunshui  22:35, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

Nina Bal socking

Can you please take a look at user Brewingbeer that was registered in August, but begin editing today. No edits outside Draft:Nina Bal and giving the same kind of excuses when asked to disclose links where they advertise paid Wikipedia-editing services. I can give you info

I have been aware that some of the kids at my school have been vandalizing Wikipedia, and during class I was talking about my message to Diannaa, and I could have sworn that some one acted by making the profane name "dianaasucks" in response to that. Also it was a BIG mistake talking to the class about my Wikipedia block, and I hope no one does anything profane in response to that. sorry for any inconvenience I have caused you.Gumshoe97 (talk) 20:04, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Ecsite Events

That account was just created today . Don't you think a straight up block is bitey ? Necromonger...We keep what we kill 13:30, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

It appears to have been created solely for the purpose of adding links to the organisation's website, so no, I don't think a block is at all inappropriate. They are clearly not here to contribute. They cannot edit under that username in any case, and will need to change it before they can return to editing, but the block also alerts them to the fact that such edits are unwelcome. We have a horrific problem with promotional editing on Wikipedia, and I can tell you - from long and bitter experience - that it is almost never worth the time and effort involved to explain to every single one of these editors why what they are doing is not permitted. They are welcome to change their username, address the reasons for the block, and return to editing - I keep an eye on users whom I have blocked for spam usernames and promotional editing, and will unblock them myself if they post a suitable unblock request - but they cannot edit here as long as their goal is to bump up their site's SEO rankings by inserting links into Wikipedia. Yunshui  13:38, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

User:Saqiwa

I understand why the ANI was closed in that way, but the WP:CONSPIRACY-like response you got to your post on Saqiwa’s user talk and then their subsequently copying-and-pasting of that thread onto various article talk pages kinda further indicates more of a WP:RGW approach to editing than a WP:HERE. Saqiwa’s been advised not to copy-paste entire discussions from one talk to another like this before, but for some reason they continue to do so. — Marchjuly (talk) 06:31, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Posting on those pages is a very obvious violation of his topic ban, so he now has a couple of days off to enjoy. I fear you may have been right about the imposition of the TBAN being equivalent to an indef, but the consensus wasn't solidly in favour of a block and I wanted to at least give him the chance to avoid taking a permanent vacation from editing... Yunshui  07:13, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
I think that they might be able to contribute positively if they just stopped assuming that everyone who challenges one of their edits has to be doing so because of some Wikipedia conspiracy against Fiji. It would also help if they could realize that Wikipedia is not really the best way to try and resolve any real world disputes or differences of opinion about how Fiji is covered by reliable sources. Perhaps, this short block will give them time to reflect; otherwise, I think suggesting WP:ALTERNATIVE might be the only thing that can be done to try and help them further. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:26, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
I thought this would probably happen, but they are back editing Fiji articles now that their block has run out. Either they don't understand what the topic ban means (that's a possibility), or they've just decided to ignore and continue on as before because they feel they're in the right regardless of what anyone else says (more likely the case). -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:33, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, looks like you were right. I've made the usual escalation to 72 hours, but if they go straight back to editing Fiji articles after that - given that they haven't even attempted to edit anything else - I think the next block would be justified in being a straight jump to indef. Urgent Email

Hey Yunshui,

I was creating an article and it was deleted (G11). However, I read the policies and I removed all external links and anything that has to do with "promotion". is it good to go now?

All the best,

Seif Eldawy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seifeldawy (talkcontribs) 11:10, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

@Seifeldawy: Absolutely not, and I have deleted it again. You simply cannot write that way on Wikipedia; the entire draft was nothing more than a laudatory paean to how amazing the subject is. You also haven't addressed the fact that you clearly know the subject in some capacity, and are most likely doing this as one of his employees; if you do not settle that question you are likely to be blocked from editing. Regarding Wiki Page

Hi Yunshui,

You have sent me a message regarding my wiki talk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:SandeepMarvah?markasread=174548884&markasreadwiki=enwiki#October_2019).

Below is my answer regarding our wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Asian_Business_School :

Please be informed that I am an employee of Asian Business School and not getting paid for any content updation directly or indirectly. The content shared is absolutely authentic and no compensation is associated with the content edits. We only request you to approve and publish the wiki page.

Please let me know if you have any queries.

Best Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by SandeepMarvah (talkcontribs) 10:46, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

You're an employee but you don't get paid? Sounds like a pretty unusual job... Regardless, even if you're an unpaid volunteer, you still have a clear conflict of interest, which you need to declare. Yunshui  10:51, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
(talk page watcher)Hi SandeepMarvah. Just want to add a couple of things to what Yunshui posted about COI editing. The first is that Wikipedia articles aren't owned by their subjects, their creators, or even those who edit them as explained in Wikipedia:Ownership of content; in others words, any article you create about your school will not be the school's Wikipedia page, but rather a Wikipedia article written about the school. This is an important thing for you and the school to understand because neither you nor it will have any final editorial control over the article and it can, in principle, be edited by anyone from anywhere around the world at anytime. So, if the school wants to have 100% control over what's written about it, Wikipedia isn't the right place for that. Only content which is in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines will be consider acceptable and anything else will be likely removed. In addition, you and anyone associated with the school will for the most part be expected to not directly edit the article yourselves, but instead propose changes be made on the article's talk page for others to assess.
The next thing is that only subjects considered to be Wikipedia notable are really only allowed to have articles written about them. The fact that the school exists and has it's own websites, etc. is not sufficient to establish Wikipedia notability; it needs to have received significant coverage in reliable sources which are independent and secondary. In other words, Wikipedia is not really interested in what the school is saying about itself, but rather what others such as major newspapers or magazines, etc. are saying about it.
The last thing is that all article content is going to be expected to supported by citations to reliable sources and that which isn't can be removed at any time. You may personally know lots of information about the school that is true, but such content will not be allowed in the article unless it can be verified by others.
Finally, one thing I noticed above is that you wrote We only request you to approve and publish the wiki page. Who is we? Wikipedia accounts aren't allowed to be shared among multiple persons as explained in WP:SHAREDACCOUNT; so, please make sure that you're the only person using this account. If someone else from you school wants to edit Wikipedia, please advise them to create their own account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:41, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thom Bresh

This person clearly passes WP:NMUSIC with two major-label albums (ABC Records), nine charted singles on Hot Country Songs, and a nomination from the Academy of Country Music. I added three different newspaper articles, an AllMusic biography, and at least one major magazine's review of his album. Does this look like a sufficient WP:HEY job now? Hey Sir,

How are you? I hope you are fine, I deeply appreciate your efforts for helping others and I will be so grateful for your help. I need your help in creating an article like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Syed_Legal_Translation Thanks a lot EsraaaAli (talk) 07:21, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing that page to my attention; it was in fact an attempt by an undisclosed paid editor to hijack an existing article. I have restored the article (Miloňovice) to its correct content and title, and have blocked the user responsible. Yunshui  08:11, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

User:MHist01

Hi Yunshui. Since you've declined this editor's unblock request and the blocking admin is away to Nov. 1O, I thought maybe you can help sort of what to do at user talk:Ivanvector#User:MHist01. The file mentioned in the discussion is now on Commons, but it's copyright status is still unclear, and then there's the other content/files the editor created why they were evading their block. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

I've been through his page creations under that account and deleted most of them. A few, including Iona College Pipe Band, had sufficient contributions from others that I felt G5 wouldn't apply, but in the majority of cases, all of the content was his barring a few minor categorisations or typo fixes - those ones have been removed. Not really decided on the images - they aren't really "his" work, as such, and so there's a case to be made that we should hang on to them. The ones at Commons are out of my jurisdiction anyway. Yunshui  08:59, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look. I think that MHist101 and myself were the only real contributors to the pipe band article, and I was mostly doing cleanup and trying to find more sources. I can't really clean it up anymore, and I've been unable to find any better sourcing; so, I was thinking about sending it to AfD. I asked about it on some WikiProject talk pages, but nobody seemed to suggest any ways to improve it or where to find better sources. I and I believe others were willing to give MHist101 some more time to try and provide better sources in show of good faith, but that's unlikely to happen now. I understand that articles can sometimes be improved as a result of them ending up at AfD, but I don't think it's really good practice just to nominate something on the hope that others may improve it. At the same time, I don't think that WP:NEXIST is intended to be an excuse for keeping a iffy article, especially when WP:BEFORE has been tried and no sources have been found. So, not too sure what to do here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:49, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Well, in the case of that article, you are the only other significant contributor - if you are happy for your contributions to be deleted there, then there's no reason not to delete it under G5 as well, without the need for an AFD discussion. Yunshui  13:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Understand and have no problem with G5, especially since I don't think MHist01 was being very forthcoming about their COI even though I was trying to help them out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:54, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Cool; I'll go sort that out then. Yunshui  13:59, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:12, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Yunshui,

I'm not so sure if you remember me from back then, but I'd like to apologize for all the havoc and dishonesty with all those sock puppets along with all the vandalism on your talk page.

It may have been 5 years ago, but I looked back and really realized how much vandalism took place out of immaturity, adding to the fact that I earned your trust and essentially threw it all away always makes me look back in regret. I hope you're doing well. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 12:12, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

UPE Evidence

Hi - in this edit, you indicated that you would be happy to share the evidence with other admins. I do not want to review your block - I have complete confidence that you acted appropriately. However, I'm eager to learning more about how to detect and provide evidence about UPE to improve my own ability to respond to it - would you be prepared to share the evidence with me on that basis? (If it makes any difference, I have OTRS permissions, and have signed the confidentiality agreement - I haven't done anything useful in that area yet because I found the interface baffling, but another editor has offered to hold my hand and walk me through it so I hope to start contributing there next year.) It's a shame the discussion's been closed; I'd have liked to instigate a conversation about the relationship between the IP user above and 124.84.69.14, another Japanese IP whose article was accepted by Ceethekreator... pity. Yunshui  08:59, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Blocking of Meeanaya

I notice you blocked Meeanaya for "undisclosed paid editing, meatpuppetry and covert advertising." Is there a public record somewhere on Wikipedia where this was discussed? I'd like to see it. The Gurbaksh Chahal page has been abused by many paid editors and puppets. I follow this page closely. Thanks in advance. Chisme (talk) 23:46, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

No, the evidence for this case was submitted privately via direct email and OTRS. Since it involves the user's real-life identity, it would not be appropriate to discuss on Wikipedia. Yunshui  00:06, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. Meeanaya did a number of edits on the Gurbaksh Chahal page, which is why I was interested. Chisme (talk) 21:05, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

There is a user called Amicable always, and he keeps glorifying a convicted pedophile, and made a reference to him in the article called Tulisi Pujan Diwas, he is also inserting promotional content into articles, so can you please take action! Gumshoe97 (talk) 16:23, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Just an FYI Yunshui this appears to be quite a content dispute and I've moved the improperly moved article back to mainspace since neither editors involved in the dispute should be moving anything just because they don't like it. Praxidicae (talk) 16:30, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Refer: 3 I request you to please go through these diffs. Although Praxidicae has redirected page as a temporary fix for conflict, But I request you to please restore the article content as it's about a festival which is being celebrated all over India. Although it was started by Asaram, but this article is not for glorifying him. Only it's mentioned that he initiated because there is no point in hiding truth which is supported by references. Rest of the article is all about the festival which is widely celebrated by Hindus all over India. Please refer article before Gumshoe97 deleted it. Because Wikipedia requires independent reliable sources, not whatever promotional puffery you've been inserting. For further explanation please see this lengthy discussion on your talk page. Praxidicae (talk) 17:05, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
Praxidicae That discussion on my talk page is more of a personal attack towards me. User:Gumshoe97 has called me dirt bag, shitty and what not. He even deleted the discussion from his talk page when one of the admins warned him67. User:SpacemanSpiff just simply blamed me of adding honorifics but the fact is I have never added any honorific. In fact, after this discussion, I only removed the honorifics from Tulsi Pujan Diwas page which other editors had added8. And "whatever" content is there in Tulsi Pujan Page it has proper news website references. So there is no point in simply terming them as "promotional". How come news references are promotional? Amicable always (talk) 02:12, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

I don't see that there's any action needed by me here. Both of you need to calm down and discuss this like rational adults. @Amicable always: Removal of talkpage warnings on one's own talkpage is not indicative of anything other than that the message has been seen; such removals are completely within policy. Whether the article should exist or not is a matter for discussion; my personal opinion is that it would be better as a few extra lines in the Tulsi article, assuming that you can provide suitable sources. Mentioning that it was started by Asaram Bapu is acceptable if sources demonstrate that it was, but the language you use need to be toned down; "began with the inspiration of" is not sufficiently neutral. Given that you have, by my count, three editors telling you that your additions were not appropriate, two of whom are extremely experienced, you may want to consider that perhaps they might have a point. @Gumshoe97: Personal attacks are never acceptable here; your comments on Amicable always' talkpage were way over the line and I've half a mind to issue a block for them. By all means discuss content and dispute the inclusion or exclusion of articles, but use language like that against another user again and you will see the wrong end of a block notice, from me or another admin. Take a breath, remember that this is only a website, and calm down. I'm glad to see that a discussion (of a sort) has started to develop on the talkpage; please continue this there so that it can be dealt with in one place. Yunshui  08:31, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi

there is a user called MyOptimism, and he was involved in a sock puppet investigation targeted at the user Amicable always, and his editing pattern is very suspicious refer to this page for more info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/MyOptimism , and I was wondering if you can use the Check User function. Gumshoe97 (talk) 14:01, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

MyOptimism has already been checked, see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/AasraMahi/Archive. Yunshui  14:18, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Is he a sock ? Gumshoe97 (talk) 14:22, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

The check was inconclusive, as you can see from the SPI archive. Yunshui  14:28, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

That's why I'm re opening it, to make it conclusive. Gumshoe97 (talk) 15:03, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

That's not how it works. Checking their data again a day or two later won't change the result, and I'm not going to invade someone else's privacy at your request when a highly experienced checkuser has already examined the technical evidence and given a conclusion. Yunshui  15:18, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Then why was the thing listed as inconclusive? Gumshoe97 (talk) 15:26, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

You understand what the word "inconclusive" means, right? It is not possible to draw a conclusion from the available evidence that the account is a sockpuppet. Thus, the evidence is inconclusive. Yunshui  15:30, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
Gumshoe97, maybe you should stop working at SPI. You're a new user, and SPI is not a place for new users to work in. Why don't you try working on a few articles instead? —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 15:32, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Please provide an explanation for the deletion of the Eurohound page

I am involved with the mushing community heavily. My partner has been breeding and racing Eurohounds for almost 25 years. They are a specific cross-breed produced for a very niche reason, Sprint Sled Dog Racing. They were initially cross-bred in Scandanavia in the 80's specifically for this purpose. I know they exist because they continue to dominate the Sprint Sled Dog World to this day. No, they are not an AKC breed because they are not American. They are bred around the world and created initially in Scandinavia. I looked at the discussion page, and not a single person involved in that discussion appears to have any contact with the mushing community. If you had asked the community, you would have quickly learned that they are a prevalent breed in the sport.

As a member of the Eurohound community, I would like the page returned to its former status. It is visited often by members of the community, and was noticed the day it was deleted by just that community.

I, fortunately, understand enough about Wikipedia to know how to contact you about this issue and what to do to get the page restored.

Please contact me directly, and I will be happy to provide any information that you require.

If you don't have actual evidence that the breed does not exist, then I would appreciate it if you would restore the page on that fact alone.

Here is a paper that formally mentions the introduction into the racing community. (See table 5)

And I can go on and on and on with the mentions of Eurohounds by Eurohound breeders and mushers.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

The article was deleted after a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eurohound, which was closed after being open for two weeks with a clear policy-based consensus to delete the page. If you'd like to contest the close, you can do so at Deletion review. However, convincing me of the validity of the article is pointless - I did not unilaterally decide to delete it, I simply pressed the button after assessing the community's view, as expressed through the deletion discussion. It is the community whom you have to convince. Yunshui  08:15, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Deletion review for Eurohound

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Eurohound. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Tinjaw (talk) 00:40, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

While they may not be the user you blocked them for, I suspect there is some GH/BH (or really BH/BH) going on. Anyway, thanks for chiming in! Praxidicae (talk) 14:52, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

I see he's now making a textbook how-to-stay-blocked appeal... I honestly just think the combination of youth and incompetence is the problem here; the disruption is entirely block-worthy, but I don't think it's malicious. Yunshui  14:59, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Oh, agreed but there comes a point where intent is irrelevant when you're disruptive. Disruption is disruption whether it's as a result of malice or incompetence. Praxidicae (talk) 15:13, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
 • Also would you mind taking a look at this just from a PAID perspective? I'm fairly sure this is all still paid work. Praxidicae (talk) 16:25, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Paid editing seems probable but not provable in this case - the editing is significantly different from that of the previous creator of the page, so I'm fairly sure it's a different individual, though possibly employed by the same organisation. Yunshui  10:16, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
