Pat Hawkins

edit

G'day Laura, It's cold and wet and miserable in England, but we expect nothing else. Are you aware of Pat Hawkins, multiple world record breaking cyclist from Perth? There is no mention of her on wiki excepting snippets that I have just added to Cycling records#Long-distance records and Cycling records#World Endurance record for distance in a calendar year, having gleaned them from old obscure WA newspapers. Pat so deserves an article. Do you have any info? Is she a big name in Australia? Is she still alive? Regards Chienlit (talk) 15:07, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Laura, I have now aggregated all my meagre search results into a Pat Hawkins page, but I will be eternally grateful for any additions, corrections and clarifications that you may be able to make. Regards. Chienlit (talk) 18:41, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Laura, Thanks for the Trove link, I wasted many hours struggling through Google and did not notice the Trove search box. :/ ... but it was fun 'crowdsourcing' the references before citing them. I love your Freudian slip/pun. So sad, what a waste of fantastic thighs and calves and lungs and grit. I would be so proud if I had ridden 'almost' 45,000 miles, I still glow when thinking about years when I did almost 4,500 miles getting to work. ... . . . L'esprit d'escalier - Indeed I never miss an opportunity to mention it, even trying to impress women who are younger than my children (probably) and living on the other side of the world. :) Chienlit (talk) 15:35, 20 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Trove shows only one mention of LogCheetGate - GIRL CYCLISTS RECORD NOT RECOGNISED, Army News (Darwin, NT : 1941 - 1946) Sunday 15 February 1942 p 8.[1]
Presumably her other world and W.A. records still stand, 1,000 miles and 7 days, so she is still worth a (caveated) wiki page. Any info about her birth, parents, husband, children etc will still make vital additions to the article. If she is still alive she should be celebrated. Chienlit (talk) 08:55, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
p.s. Ken Webb#After the ride gives an insight into some of the hostility and dirty tricks that such endeavours are subject to. Chienlit (talk) 09:02, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Laura, I have added Pat Hawkins to DYK. Many thanks for your help. Any comments, edit or review would be gratefully received. Regards. Chienlit (talk) 09:36, 23 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, couple questions

edit

Hi LauraHale, since you initiated Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Herostratus/Wikiproject Paid Editing Watch/Editor Registry, which concerns Wikipedia governance issues (rather than page-content issues), and just to make sure everything's on the up-and-up, it would be helpful if you'd answer the following to questions. I assume your answers would be affirmative of course so this is probably just a formality.

  • Have you ever edited any Wikimedia Foundation page in return for pay or similar consideration (such as other emolument, promise of future employment, and so for forth) from a non-Foundation-approved third party?
  • Are you willing to state for the record that you will never edit any Wikimedia Foundation page in return for pay or similar consideration from a non-Foundation-approved third party?

Thanks for you time, clearing this up will help me address the questions raised. Herostratus (talk) 03:58, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Is Bidgee okay? Argh... Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:40, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

There has been extensive flooding in the region. Areas near where Bidgee and I live have gotten around 300+mm of rain in the past week. (Bidgee and I are about 3 hours away from each other.) There have been some road closures and evacuations in the area. It is probably adding to his stress level. I think we both knew the chances of things passing FP were low, but I thought it was worth the chance anyway… and the tone of things probably just added to his stress. (Plus, he just does not have the ability to fix things even if he wanted to right now because of the extensive rain.) Hopefully things will get better in the next month. --LauraHale (talk) 21:42, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • That's even worse (sounds like Jakarta a couple years ago, except when you guys flood you get sharks in the streets). I hope he doesn't leave the project over this. His photographs are good, and he's a great guy. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:30, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll make sure Bidgee stays involved. If I can get another opportunity to take photographs of sports, I'll try to get him involved. While his pictures may not be feature worthy on Wikipedia, he still is taking NEEDED pictures where nothing is available on Commons at the moment. We didn't have any pictures of Australian water polo players, few pictures of ID basketball (with the ones existing taken on my iPhone) and a lot of local geographic stuff that no one else takes. Two of his pictures appeared (will appear) on the main page as part of DYK as credit. One of his pictures was included on a Wikinews page. He does great work at monitoring some Australian related content. So yeah, I'll pester him and otherwise find ways for him to contribute. :) Well, by the time the flooding stops. --LauraHale (talk) 00:42, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Yeah. And of course, there's the birds. Can't let JJ get all of them. Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:07, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think there are some people who just do not like him on Wikipedia and it makes things more difficult for him to do stuff.  : / Bah. Anyway, if you ever need reviews for DYK, let me know and I can pinch hit and do a few. (I'm temporarily moving into GA land. As soon as I get my 18 of them nominated, I'll be clearing out all the un-reviewed sport ones ahead of mine. ;) We have some Australians who do good pictures, and getting more attention to them would be fabulous. Or more pictures period. --LauraHale (talk) 03:11, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I don't mind waiting for DYK, there's no rush. I would like help with an FAC, but I know you don't venture there. Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:43, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unpaid editors

edit

Hi! I think you missed the point behind the list I started. The idea is to counter the list of paid editors. Therefore, I'm trying to generate a list of editors willing to edit any article upon request (neutrally, sourced, etc, of course). The idea is that with such a list, there would be no reason at all to engage paid editors. While I admire GLAM's mission (very much), it has a deliberately limited range of subjects - and that's just not what my list is about. I'd be happy to explain in further detail if you like, and if you wish to solicit GLAM members for individual inclusion on the list, that would be fantastic - just so long as they understand it's any article (but not necessarily any edit) upon request. Laura,

Thanks very much for the review ... I was beginning to get concerned that no one would do it, and if it hadn't been done by tomorrow I would have asked on the talk page because we would have been in danger of missing the date.

I slightly undid your edit ... restored the sentence in question without the "most thorough", making it just a statement of fact introducing the two sections that follow. That doesn't need to be cited, because all it gives is information right there on the page. Daniel Case (talk) 06:20, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh yes ... I meant to add that I am working on another time-sensitive DYK that I hope will be done by tomorrow (actually, it would be tomorrow your time, but much later today my time yet still tomorrow if I'm talking about tomorrow night). Daniel Case (talk) 06:23, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, this is the other one I was talking about. Obviously it needs to be done before 3/21 UTC. It's under March 15 (and on the article talk page), and there's space for it already under March 22 at the bottom of the page. Daniel Case (talk) 15:27, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

RE: 7NEWS

edit

Hello. I'm not sure if I'm meant to make a new section on your wall, I'm new to Wikipedia, as a writer, but I've been reading Wikipedia articles since Wikipedia opened. Thanks for your feedback on the editing I've been doing - I just want to endorse that some sort of person, an IP vandalised the page, and nearly defaced it by clearing half the article out. I sorted the history out, and repaired it, so it's not particularly my own work, however I did add supplementary writing which would help a reader understand the bulletins. Unfortunately, I cannot find particular sources for things such as Jim Wilson being the sports presenter, (I'm doubtful there would be a website dedicating an article on the fact Jim Wilson is a sports presenter on a news bulletin). If there are things which need to be cited, I recommend those parts just be scraped, mainly because I cannot be bothered finding the sources.

Then again, Goodluck on your dissertation.

Robert Hiester Montgomery DYK

edit

Thanks for your thoughtful review of the Robert Hiester Montgomery article. I put back the two term president sentence and added a citation for it. Also I provided an online citation for the Palm tree claim. As for which wikipedian is Laura Hale - I guess the person lying on the ground. I know you wear glasses and I think I can see a touch of blue on that person's wrist like the blue on your wristwatch. I know you are 33 years old. Second guess is the woman touching her hair. -- GroveGuy (talk) 07:58, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not 33 years old. I don't doubt the facts in the article are true. Looking up sources independently seems to confirm it quite vigorously. I just mostly wanted to cover my ass because I think some people would think collects palm trees would be a weird hoax type thing and wanted to assure anyone who might complain that I searched and verified that fact because of its unusual nature. --LauraHale (talk) 08:04, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Mood Repair Strategies DYK

edit

Thanks for the review. I submitted an alternate hook, one that is fully supported by the article and its references. I also elaborated on some of the parts you felt could use more information as well as made those few sentences more neutral. I have been working to get this article linked to related articles across Wikipedia and the orphan tab is now gone. This article is still a work in progress and will be expanded more but hopefully with the changes I made it fits the qualifications for a DYK article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JeremyKozak (talkcontribs) 16:24, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
