WikiCup 2014 April newsletter
Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.
192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Editing philosophy
"I look for what is obscure, but still notable. Features that were important in past epochs but forgotten in mainstream historical narratives or that lie beyond the reach for English-speaking readers." You have expressed exactly my recent thinking. I often muse on what would be in Wikipedia if it, and the internet, had been invented 50, 100 or 500 years ago. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:09, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- Many thanks! I had a look of your userpage, I concur that we are on the same line on this, for a less "recentistic" (if that is a word) focus of the Wiki project. --Soman (talk) 22:15, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- We can't do this alone: a collaborative project like this one is of immense importance. You both might appreciate the efforts by Crisco 1492, who is singlehandedly putting Indonesia and its long and multifaceted history on the wiki-map. Note the last paragraph of Soerabaijasch Handelsblad (an article he wrote overnight pretty much overnight ex nihilo): it's such newspaper archives as are mentioned there that make this job actually possible. And with the decline of "regular" libraries it's become even more important to have this stuff digitized: see the last paragraph of Royal Tropical Institute on how easy it is to do away with history (much of which still not recuperated) by way of budget cuts. Thanks to you both, Drmies (talk) 14:53, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say single-handedly; Soman has done plenty of good work with the Indonesian leftists, a topic which is still dangerous to research here. I think most of my articles on the leftists have been limited to literary figures and groups (oh, and Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI, which is actually anti-communist propaganda). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:58, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Chaco war
Um, question - in the article on the Confederación Sindical Latinoamericana you wrote this line
Prior to the official founding of CSLA, the committee organized a trade unionist conference against the Chaco War on February 25, 1928. The conference was held on the initiative of the Unión Obrera del Paraguay.
And your reference is Guerra, Sergio/Prieto, Alberto. Cronologia del movimiento obrero y las luchas por la revolución socialista en América Latina y el Caribe (1917-1939). Havana: Casa de las Americas, 1980.
But the Chaco War began in 1932 - so how does that work out? Were there tensions between Bolivia and Paraguay and they were protesting the war preparations? What does your source say?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 17:06, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Also, on the same page, I cannot find a union in Brazil during the time period using the initials CGT. Does your source provide the full name?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 17:27, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
