Thank you, Sarah. You're very kind. P.S.: I'm sorry, but I didn't understand the "who they are" part. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 01:28, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

As in...you have your face on your user page and you are public with who you are. "You are truly who you are," I suppose =) SarahStierch (talk) 01:29, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Of course! You know, if people here revealed their real names and faces much would be different. There are many who misbehave because they are protected by anonymity. Cheers, --Lecen (talk) 01:43, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
The self-congratulatory tone of the above comment shows a near-comical lack of self-awareness. About 40 minutes before Lecen was congratulated for being "who they are" he said this. It is clear who he is, and not particularly palatable. Nev1 (talk) 13:54, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure what that drama is about, sorry! No drama on this talk page...so please keep that awayyyyy!!! Hehe.. Not everyone has to be out on Wikipedia, but the few of us who are - it's nice to connect! :) Thanks for dropping by! SarahStierch (talk) 13:56, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Lecen decided it was acceptable to suggest another editor had been sexually abused. "There are many who misbehave because they are protected by anonymity", so what's his excuse? I don't expect an answer. Happy editing, Nev1 (talk) 14:11, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
It's regretful that drama has erupted. Again, I'm content to not be involved in any of this. I try to avoid drama llama's whenever I can =) So let's try to keep the drama with *that* talk page and not on mine. Cheers! SarahStierch (talk) 14:13, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
don't be passive aggressive sarah, you know you love drama. (it's fascinating how folks spread the drama, stalking the target and spinning behind them. it's becoming more common, like jam on toast) Slowking4 †@1₭ 14:20, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
People do seem to be getting "meaner" on Wikipedia, but, it doesn't mean I have to tolerate the drama on my talk page. If I'm not involved, I don't want it here! SarahStierch (talk) 14:23, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Bakerville

I must say, this edit caught my attention. I was born and raised in Bakerville, and never knew that. Intriguing! Did you just happen across that book? Huntster (t @ c) 07:46, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. Yes, I found the book actually via Google Books while doing some general research. Sadly, it was only that short and small little mention but it's an interesting and reliable book! SarahStierch (talk) 13:46, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

maybe, user or editor is better than "owner". about the trend, maybe i'm more sensitized, to the use of contributions watch-listing, but it seems part of the recent change patrolling, instant messaging culture. (a recent example of what i would call tagspam Elizabeth Turk) what a bitey way to communicate, rather than directly to the editor. wonder how to make a culture change. Haha, yeah. That was Jgmikulay who uploaded it, we talked about it via email. I told her she had to do it via Wikipedia =) She wasn't really involved in image uploads during the beginning of the WP:PA project. Now she has learned =) SarahStierch (talk) 15:33, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
i'm not sure i agree with the "no copyright asserted on statue" thing. seeing as how unveiling is not the same as publishing (copies). but whatever floats commons boat. let's travel all the art to Kröller-Müller Museum, take a picture, and we're good to go. Slowking4 †@1₭ 16:48, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Related to above conversation but *not* related to drug use or llamas...

Hi Sarah and Slowking. Thanks for being watchful over images of public artworks on Commons and WP. I love the idea of sending everything to the Kröller-Müller Museum for a photo-opp! Unfortunately, with all of the volunteers involved with Wikiproject Public Art over the years, many mistakes have been made with photo uploads and display. We're all wiser now, but we also hope to continue involving newbies. It really helps to have wiki-savvy editors like you to be on the lookout. I'm hoping that the current deletion nominator is just working on diSuvero's stuff and won't go on a major spree (bender)! Jgmikulay (talk) 17:26, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Benito Juarez (Alciati)

Hi Sarah. I'm always interested to read your articles and this one was no exception. But some time ago, I left a note on the article's talk page about the misrepresentation of the inscription in your source here. Whoever copied it down obviously had only a poor knowledge of Spanish and mispresented the capitalization, etc. The question now arises whether an incorrect description from the Smithsonian should be considered authentic for Wikipedia. I would say that as photographs of the statue clearly show that the inscription is in capitals, it should also be represented in capitals in the article (or at the very least the errors of capitalization should be corrected). I note there is also an error in the citation of the inscription at the plaza intersection: "lugar do origen del presidente" should of course be "lugar de origen del presidente" but maybe there is really an error in the original -- I have no way of telling. So perhaps the article should be corrected (simply by rewriting the incription in capitals) to avoid apparent differences in capitalization between the English and Spanish, and also to represent the inscriptions correctly. A footnote could be added. What do you think? - Ipigott (talk) 08:37, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm fine with it just being corrected and capitalized. I usually always capitalize inscriptions, as that's how it goes. I'm sure I've failed to do that in the past, like I failed here. I was more interested in cleaning up the article and the history (one can't do it all! sigh!). I cannot speak Spanish, and right now due to my school schedule I don't have time to go over to the sculpture and look at it and take new images. Slowking, whom I'm sure will chime in here shortly, added the original content. The document that the Smithsonian provided is considered a reliable source, however, you will on occasion stumble onto problems. As someone who has been using the Save Outdoor Sculpture! survey material for two years, I know there are errors - and due to those errors I have other places I use for research. Sadly, due to my time and life, I don't always have the opportunity to seek out those additional published (usually offline) materials and to visit the works in the flesh (like I have, I've physically documented over 1500 public artworks in great detail in the course of two years! Oy vey!) Actually, now that I think about it - perhaps you can just insert a note that there could be a possible error in the translation, and a talk page note. I'm babbling here....and I'm in the middle of finals so my mind is partially fried! Did this help? :) SarahStierch (talk) 14:17, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I have just seen that you did not in fact add the text of the inscription or identify the Smithsonian reference. Nevertheless, I would still be interested in having your views on this. - Ipigott (talk) 08:49, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

hi passing by, i added those notes from the SIRIS, and took the photo which shows the difference. interestingly, i've gotten the opposite comment about using all caps, at say Alexander Hamilton (Fraser). feel free to change the formatting, per that example, and the photo does show the real thing. rather than the bold, you can use the <big><small> to adjust. there are templates too. being lazy, i tend to use the SI, but we know they have been wrong, and their naming is atrocious (these were volunteers after all). (oops reliability loss). Slowking4 †@1₭ 23:47, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Wearstler (again)

Let me explain why I argued against the use of the magazine cover image in the Kelly Wearstler article.

I had just spent a little time surfing around the design blogosphere, and one thing that is obvious is that people in that world have a completely different mindset from wikipedians when it comes to images and copyright. Even though magazines, designers, photographers and others obviously can be very defensive about their copyright, images appear to be re-used rather freely and, as long as attribution is given, it allows the copyright owners to have their cake and eat it at the same time: They can enjoy the free publicity that such circulation of imagery offers them, but still reserve the right to withdraw their images from any place or context they find unsuitable. I think it is far more likely that Ms Wearstler would donate an image to Wikipedia if she sees that we won't play that game. That she or her firm doesn't give you an image (or doesn't even bother to reply, if that's the case) is probably because they simply don't get the thing about "freedom as in free speech vs. free beer" and all that stuff. (I don't know if or how you tried to explain it.) It's a completely different world.

I looked around just now for an image that could be used. There is a fairly good picture here, one that appears to be taken by the blogger herself. If she (the blogger, HC) can be convinced to donate the image under the right type of CC license, it could go into the article. --Hegvald (talk) 17:03, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

BTW, you may be interested in seeing this. I honestly don't know what to say. --Hegvald (talk) 14:27, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm going to be honest with you, I don't really care about the image anymore, hell, I didn't even know who Kelly Wearstler was until I was tipped off on the drama on her page about the infobox Playboy thing. I forgot about the image until you brought it up here, and while I appreciate hearing your thoughts, it's not really something I'm worrying about anymore :) I did leave a comment on Kww's talk page, as his comments have actually hurt my feelings - as a longtime Wikipedia editor and person who generally writes biographies. It's really really frustrating (and no, I don't have a problem with Playboy, except their airbrushing techniques.. :P) User_talk:Kww#Kelly_Wearstler.2C_really.3F if you wish to see my comments. Kelly Wearstler

Most of your edits are after my involvement in the article. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Kellywearstler and the discussion here, where Scott MacDonald described including her measurements in the article as "harmful". My understanding is that Wearstler has also communicated with the OTRS to attempt to get the article to deemphasize her Playmate status, but I can't find the links to that discussion at the moment. We can argue about weighting, but describing the inclusion of a Playmate's measurements as "harmful" is ludicrous.—Kww(talk) 15:35, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Sarah! I found your article about women on wikipedia very interesting, and since I participated in the survey I loved reading the responses from everyone. Are we going to take any action on this issue regarding women participation, a new survey for example? Thank you. ^_^ --MusicsColors (talk) 22:23, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi MusicsColors! Thanks for stopping by :) I'm glad you enjoyed reading the survey, that means a lot to me. Feminist art, Lady Lilith

Sarah,

You may be exactly the person I need to review something in my DAM GLAM project. (or maybe not)

I'm writing an article on one of their paintings, now at User:Smallbones/Chester County (convenience sandbox) but soon to be at Lady Lilith.

There's a definite feminist perspective on this painting, and I have to say that I don't have much background in feminist theory. I'm afraid I might use exactly the wrong word, e.g. sexualized instead of sexual or maybe just sensuous.

In any case, I also want the article to be the most beautiful article on Wikipedia - which shouldn't be hard given the material I have to work with. But do tell me if I'm overdoing it.

Please comment, edit, remove, etc., as you see best. Maybe even suggest a DYK hook.

All the best,

Dinner Party invites

Before you get too far along in adding citations, you should be aware of T21262. Once you hit more than 500 or so citation templates, the page may start timing out, i.e. failing to parse. Kaldari (talk) 18:31, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Is that why you didn't cite your entries on it? Should I just stop citing or..? :-/ What should I do? SarahStierch (talk) 18:33, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
I've found on large lists, doing the citations by hand, instead of with the citation templates, helps load time. A split may or may not be out of the question (I can't find the exact relevant page...) Courcelles 19:07, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
The "Chicago, xxx" citations will be fine since they don't use a cite template. The other ones will eventually bog down the page parsing though. What you may want to do is list the Dinner Party website as a citation for the entire table, and not cite it explicitly for individuals. In other words, just list explicit citations for all references used besides the Dinner Party website. Another option is to not use the citation template for those citations. For example:
<ref name="Milliat">[http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/eascfa/dinner_party/heritage_floor/madame_a_milliat.php "Madame A. Milliat"]. Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art: The Dinner Party: Heritage Floor: Madame A. Milliat. Brooklyn Museum. 2007. Retrieved 12 December 2011.</ref>
rather than:
<ref name="Milliat">{{cite web | author= | year=2007 | title=Madame A. Milliat | work=Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art: The Dinner Party: Heritage Floor: Madame A. Milliat | publisher=Brooklyn Museum | url=http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/eascfa/dinner_party/heritage_floor/madame_a_milliat.php | accessdate=12 December 2011 }}</ref>

Don't redo them. I can convert them automatically if we need to. I just wanted to make sure you knew about the issue before you got too far along. Kaldari (talk) 22:23, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Deleted your changes to Kirksville, Missouri Wiki

I have reverted your recent edit & addition of a photo to the Kirksville, Missouri articles infobox on grounds that the photo is very out of date and no longer reflects the look of that section of downtown Kirksville. All the awnings and sheet metal fronts have been removed from the buildings. Also some of the businesses portrayed there are no longer in operation. I strongly feel that an ordinary, bland, street image -- especially one so out of date -- does very little to enhance the article. I will strive in the future to get clearance for use of a photo more fitting, perhaps of our city hall or county courthouse (listed on the NRHP). In the future before you add any photos to the Kirksville wiki infobox I'd appreciate it if you could put it up for discussion first. I live in Kirksville and am infinitely famiiar with its history and current affairs. Perhaps I can save us all time and aggravation. Best regards Sector001 (talk) 07:02, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Children's Museum update

Kit Cat Klock

It's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.

We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcomed Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).

We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! LoriLee (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Your statement at RfArb

I know it was probably in context, but it might be a good idea to obscure a certain word in your statement as that is what started this entire firestorm. Hasteur (talk) 19:06, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

I've never commented on an Arbcom case before, I'm using the word as an example of incivil behavior, I'm not sure why using it as an example would be a bad thing? SarahStierch (talk) 19:09, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
@Hasteur: Your request is a bit strange. Why are you asking Sarah to redact her example, but not asking Malleus to redact the original insult she is talking about, which still stands at Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship? Isn't the use of "cunt" as an actual insult more offensive than discussing such use as an example of incivility? Kaldari (talk) 19:22, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Sarah, invoke the use-mention distinction! —Tom Morris (talk) 21:19, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Congratulations on your new role, Sarah. I have just access to a large library of books on 20th century art and photography and hope, if I have time, to go through and add references to WP. I just added one to Lewis Baltz and spotted your handiwork in the edit history. Are there any articles on the history of photography that you think need attention? (I'm an art school drop-out...) —Tom Morris (talk) 21:19, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tom! Thank you for your congratulations. I appreciate it and I'm very excited about the opportunity. Great news about your library, sounds awesome. I'm at WMF right now, but, give me a few days and I'll see if I can brainstorm a few things. So glad that you're interested in art...I was a "wanna-be art schooler" but, I surely make a better art historian than an artist =) SarahStierch (talk) 21:25, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Thx for award

Thanks for the award. I think there are now 7-8 AAA related DYK articles in the queues so do keep your eye on them. Pleased to see that others are fixing my many erors - which is my "Merry Christmas" to you and yours Victuallers (talk) 00:04, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Maiden Lane

Thanks for the improvements! I had stumbled across the Jane Jacobs quote, that's the only reason I follow it. Say hi to Steven Walling when you get back into the office. tedder (talk) 05:27, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

National Archives ExtravaSCANza

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! 1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited.

Palmetto

Please stop blindly piping "palmetto" to Sabal. In Florida, at least, "palmetto" normally refers to saw palmetto or dwarf palmetto or both collectively. The Sabal palmetto (Sabal is the article about the genus) is usually called "cabbage palm" or "Sabal palm" in Florida. In some cases, "palmetto" is the best link, as the sources do not specify which type of palmetto is meant, and may in fact be referring to two or three different species. -- Donald Albury 13:02, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, it was an innocent accident! SarahStierch (talk) 16:55, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
And I just had to clean up some inappropriate links you added in Indigenous peoples of the Southeastern Woodlands. Specifically, I corrected the link for "Garza" to "Garza language" (much more appropriate than "Garza County, Texas"), changed "Oconee" back to a red link ("Oconee River" was not a very helpful link), changed "Saluda" to "Saluda people" (a red link, but better than linking the modern town), "Monacan" to "Monacan people", and "Shakori Tribe" to "Shakori people" (the current name of the WP article). Please pay more attention to the articles you are choosing as disambiguation targets. -- Donald Albury 21:22, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I see you just edited Wiscon

If you read the stuff, I'd like to invite you to come to the next fifty or so Wiscons. It was at a Wiscon that I discovered the wonderful world of wikis; and the Wiscon crowd are the best mixture of sercon and fannish that I've encountered, in thirty-six years of attending science fiction conventions from Los Angeles to The Hague. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:24, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Section of Painting and Sculpture

Hey Sarah,

You probably know that one of my main hangups with the Public Art lists is the difficulty of finding "modern" works with free copyrights. I just ran into the Section of Painting and Sculpture and see that there were 1300 Post Office mural created under the program, perhaps more with other depression era WPA type projects. BTW my link was from my photos of File:WPA Dohanos CA PO USVI 1.JPG and File:WPA Dohanos CA PO USV! 2.JPG. As far as you know, are these freely-licensed, e.g. public domain? I've asked SlowKing too.

Happy New Year!

Hey, that's a nifty article! Yes, all WPA work is going to be public domain. (And lord knows there are museums out there that now own WPA work and would like to protest that..), but, yes, all of those 1300 post office murals are public domain! :) SarahStierch (talk) 18:01, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

SF Chinatown Area Size

I just wanna point out that the bit you have on SF Chinatown being defined as 24-sq. blocks may be incorrect and looks better if omitted from the "Chinatown, San Francisco" article. The 24 sq. bks. of the so-called "traditional" boundaries of Bush, Powell, Broadway, and Kearny, is attributed to published sources dating as far back as the 1930s. SF's oldest Chinese community has actually been expanding since the end of World War II, pushing far into the adjoining areas of North Beach, Nob Hill, and Telegraph Hill. The Chinese currently account for some 50% of the population within these areas, ranging from nearly 100% closest to Chinatown's epicenter, decreasing farther away. There really isn't an exact survey of how large Chinatown actually is, but some sources have it at somewhere between 34-36 sq. blocks which I disagree with. You can't really place boundaries on such communities as these people are always migrating back and forth. Boundaries are nothing more than political lines, drawn up by legislators who have nothing, whatsoever, to do with the communities affected. The area within Bush-Powell-Broadway-Kearny are mostly shops with very little room for housing. Case in point- at Joe Dimaggio playground deep in SF's "traditional" Italian neighborhood on any given day you will find that virtually all of the people using its facilities are Chinese. Since the 1950s, most of the neighborhood's Italian pop. have relocated to SF's Excelsior & Outer Mission areas, and the suburbs beyond. What's left are some good restaurants and adult entertainment establishments geared towards tourists, many of which are owned by ethnic Chinese which you've probably already figured out by now!
