GLAM projects

I have noticed you have been rather busy with adding banners and such lately. I was wondering how the the GLAM projects are going these days? I haven't seen much activity on the Smithsonian or Library of Congress projects so I was wondering what the status of them was these days. --Kumioko (talk) 03:40, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi there, you can visit [1] to see what we've been working on, the news letter This Month in GLAM has the details. Currently I am playing a broad role at the Smithsonian, due to my internship at the Archives of American Art and my long standing relationship with numerous staff members, which has allowed me to make great 'ins' in regards to GLAM and the Smithsonian. More involvement from different SI wings will be budding in the next few months. LoC is its own bird - I've been meeting with a staff member there who is interested in seeing our relationship grow and I'll be doing a speaking engagement to staff there in the near future! Oh my god - it is the SAME hippo. The fact that we are having this discussion is awesome, btw. About a big bronze hippo. Perhaps this hippo can have its own article and we can just rewrite/blend them. I still am awaiting to hear from GWU archives about the provenance of ours. Tagging for AAA

Aren't you going rather overboard with this? Can you explain the special connection between for example vitreous enamel or Kenneth Clark & the AAA? Johnbod (talk) 00:39, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I might be, but, I'm covering all my ground and things might be changed as my four month internship goes on. We have extensive documents related to Kenneth Clark and his relationships, ideas and life in the collections relating to over 100 artists, collectors, directors and individuals - some American, some not. We also feature the Kenneth Bates collection, who was an extensive historian in relation to enameling and wrote one of the finest books on the topic. I'm not sure why I should not be tagging these things anyway - American art relates to numerous things, people, and periods around the world - Clark is sort of the Simon Schwama of the 1960s if you will and enameling has its place throughout European and American art - whether with art deco jewelry or 2/3-D painting. The main point of categories are to help a project maintain and collect articles it is likely to actually work on, and to give users a place to go to raise issues about the article and get a useful response. Beyond that they are just clutter, a diversion of useful effort by the project, and an irritation to the people who actually do work on the articles. Generally we have far too many tags, and effectively defunct projects. Any archive relating to art is likely to have a good deal of material on enamelling and glass art, and I don't think such broad articles should be tagged. I don't want to sound negative. i agree categories help a project, i disagree they are clutter and irritation. i am far more diverted and irritated by the toxic environment, and "admins know best" mentality.
i agree tag spam in article space is a big problem, but project spam in article talk, for me is shruggable. the solution to defunct projects is to invite new people to restart them: the problem with editor turnover is a lack of constancy of purpose, for which i would look to wiki leadership, which is lacking.
this is not just any archive. unlike most universities which are artist-papers specific, this one has broad genre, art historical sources (such as Washington Color School) the project tag shows that here are sources, for article quality improvement. there is a lot of work to do. But really why would anyone bother to go to one of 2 locations (isn't it, one with microfilm) & use highly specialized & localized material, presumably almost entirely WP:PRIMARY, when they could just use more general books on these broad subject available online or in a library? i don't know, why would people join the International Amateur Scanning League? [3] they do. do you really want to limit sources? make assumptions of what's in an archives? i personally have gone to the library of congress to look up microfilm, and out of print books for sources. to get an article to featured, it has to be done. i would look here for catalog raisone, which go directly to artist notability, and are damn hard to find. primary sources are perfectly fine as an external link. i congratulate you on your non-adminhood; i was evoking some shared suffering with Sarah. it's the outside experts who get treated the worst, since they have to unlearn their commonsense, and best practises.
i am far more irritated by admins and bots (not yourself) sending me false positive messages and warnings, and deleting user talk space because it violates rules. i don't understand the irritation at category spam, they are collapsable, and imminently ignorable. I'm sure your FAs were not on article subjects as broad as enamelling and glass art, both of which have hundreds of of books on them & which it would surely never be necessary or appropriate to use such specialized primary sources for. Is the AAA an especially good source for "out of print books"? If so its article misrepresents it. Tagging criteria

I'm curious why you are tagging certain American artists and not others. I see artists in the Hirshhorn collection who are not tagged; while you are now tagging with the Archives of American Art cat and banners - are these all artists whose papers are in the archives? I know there are also American artists whose galleries papers are in the archives and who have not been tagged. Just curious...Modernist (talk) 23:10, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi there! I have yet to make it to every artist on the list yet. Please be patient =) And yes, as stated above, the AAA Project (I am the Wikipedian-in-Residence there this summer) tagging involves artists who have oral history, papers, or are mentioned in the papers. I reverted a tag removal at Talk:Henry Darger on the basis of Darger having one linear foot of archival materials at the AAA. Let me know if the removal of the project banner was for a reason other than whether Darger was in the archives. Cheers! Binksternet (talk) 02:31, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

It's based on a revamping of the tagging process. He could show up again, I'm just examining what we have the easiest access to. Turns out the only content we have for him is microfiche, give or take a few images. We also don't technically own the content, his family does. =) Sorry my dear! Visual arts tag changes

Hi Sarah, I see your name flash across my watchlist from time to time for articles I've written - specifically of the Wyeths or articles about Taos articles. Just because I'm curious, is there any specific reason that you're removing the class assignment that you added previously (e.g., change in criteria for class assignment, something in the articles specifically that are in question)? User:Smallbones/List of public art in Philadelphia

Sarah,

I'm trying to get something together for a List of public art in Philadelphia page (note the above is a very incomplete sandbox). A couple of questions and notes.

  • There are 30-40 photos on Commons category Public art in Philadelphia (and sub lists) just waiting for the list article to come out. Getting another 20-30 should be a matter of a one day well-organized trip.
  • The format should be redone - no point in my doing this if it doesn't look nice. The NRHP tables offer a pretty good model. In particular I think the table should reflect what people want to know about a work, in the usual order that they want to know it, e.g. What's the name? what does it look like? who made it? date? material? etc.
  • Is there a way to get a list from SIRIS or SOS! of all the Philly outdoor entries? It looks like l can find single entries easily enough once I know what to look for, but if it were in any way an ordered list I'd be very happy.
  • Is there a reliable source for coordinates? I know how to get the coordinates once I've found and photographed the artwork, but my question is how to find the coords so that I can find and snap the artworks.
  • Are there permanent links to SIRIS records? The urls I get are a couple of lines long with "session IDs" search parameters, etc. It is usually best to use a simple url, generally called a permanent link, to the record, but I can't find these on SIRIS. I think perhaps I'll just include the SIRIS control number in the record and let readers search for the link themselves instead of a formal footnote for each record line.

I'll be gone for a couple of days, but any help you can give by early next week will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Smallbones. Hope you had a nice trip. Sarah asked me to help with your questions, so here are responses to your various points:

  • It's great that you found so many Commons immages. Illustrated lists really help to show of a city's collection.
  • We've created a somewhat standardized table in the lists WikiProject Public Art has done for DC, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Madison, and Tampa (just a few examples). In a big city like Philly with so much public art, creating separate sections for neighborhoods, wards, or other geographic configurations might make sense (as in the DC list).
  • We usually generate coordinates by hand, either with a camera or GPS device at the site of the artwork or by using Google Maps.
  • Yes, the link URLs generated by SIRIS can be long, but including a link to the record makes the footnotes much more useful to list readers and future researchers. We haven't had trouble with broken links, but, you're right, they ain't pretty.

Versailles Challenge

Hi Sarah,

I volunteered to help on that one as well as the first. I thought that my contribution could best be made by improving the English version using the work done on the French version during the challenge. I won't get very much done working on my own so I wondered if you would like to help. It would be good to have someone with more experience. If we work together, we could get more done. I do not know if you have any French but if you do not, my current thought about process is that I start by translating the material roughly and you work on improving those first efforts (translations usually need at least two goes) and we both refine it. I could learn from you about editing, especially about the references. I think it would be quite a learning experience as well since reconciling the two language versions is an additional challenge. On top of that is the time differences. It is a mad enough idea to be fun (and hopefully productive). Archives of American Art

Hello Sarah, Thanks for contacting me on the Archives of American Art. I will be following your work with interest but am actually more concerned with the further development of European art on Wikipedia, especially in Denmark and Luxembourg. You may be interested in having a look at Europeana, the major European project on providing internet access to cultural heritage. You will see that it is one of the sites accessible for public domain documents through Creative Commons search. Maybe you should think of providing the same kind of access to your archives once that big batch of digitized documents goes on line? (Do you know exactly when that will be?) I have looked at the Archives of American Art article and was rather baffled by the statement "Over the years, the Archives has operated regional throughout the county." Is this intended to be "Over the years, the Archives has operated regionally throughout the country"? May I also suggest that a good starting point for your work would be to enhance the Archives of American Art article, setting out more precise details of your digitization work and the nature of the 100 collections and additional images which are to be made available online. - Ipigott (talk) 06:47, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I regret that we do not have any sources related to Denmark and Luxembourg - we generally have sources related to artists from around the world, regardless of their birthplace or citizenship. Glad to hear your friends are my friends at Europeana. On Denmark and Luxembourg, you would be surprised how many "Americans" have origins in these two countries -- so I'm sure your collections will reveal the connections. I know you have not contributed to the article but it really does need some work. One of your colleagues seems to be the main contributor. I suppose you are also familiar with the Wikipedia:GLAM/BM/Wikipedian in Residence page. It might be a good idea to work yourself into it. I also see that Dominic McDevitt-Parks seems to be your counterpart at the National Archives. See here. It looks to me as if the two of you should be working together. American Arts Archive Invite

Not a problem (Dudley Talcott). Throughout my life I have frequently had problems with rules. However by 7th grade "they" had discovered that I was educable. Mostly I still am. I do have a project that could potentially involve AAA a lot. However I will run it past you before going public with it. As far as your feeling "dreadful" about getting me to toe the line, don't. (unsolicited advice) If you are going to feel bad, sad or dreadful about doing something, don't do it. My suggestion is that you feel good about what you wrote to me. this appears to be different than the usual Wikipedia:Meetup/DC, and budding chapter. it appears to be coaches, DC WWW 1 (first one) doing something similar to what you did at Wikipedia & Women - HOW TO. (great minds think alike).

We're actually revamping our HOW-TO project, to be more inclusive of the open source community as a whole, I'm excited. Yeah, I actually wasn't familiar with the people who presented it, and it doesn't seem they are as active on Wikipedia as I expected. But, the more the merrier. Thank you for your second opinion. If you feel the article is a GA could you make that change when you are ready for the article. I noticed it was changed to GA after your second opinion review but was not you who did it and was not certain the process had run it's course and if that was simple vandalism. If there is no further reason it should not be listed, please do. Thanks-- It's OK now. I saw your GA tag placement afterwards and fixed everything. The other user simply changed the Project California tag. I assume a GA rating cuts across the rest of the projects and that was the intention of the other editor.. Library of Congress project

I noticed you removed the Library of Congress project from the GLAM page. I was not aware that inclusion on that page required anything other than being a Gallery, Library Archive or Museum!. --Kumioko (talk) 14:17, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

The list is for projects that are active and are sanctioned by the institution. The list is for partnerships between GLAMs and Wikipedians, right now I don't believe that the LoC project is active or is a sanctioned project with us and LoC (but, I've had a few meetings with LoC staff and eventually that will change). Well, Ok I guess. I don't really agree with that assessment but I'm not going to fight it. Just FYI I am going to Move the LOC project out from under WPUS into a new location at Wikipedia:WikiProject Library of Congress. I am going to do some work on the page soon too including a merger of the old LOC Country studies project. Its got a lot of good info. This will allow better visibility of the project than be buried under WPUS and will allow it to function better if its moved to GLAM or Shared between GLAM and WPUS. --Kumioko (talk) 14:39, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

I started copy-editing this interesting article and then ran into an edit conflict before I could complete it. I think I have restored things as they should be after "AFRI-COBRA's beginnings" but perhaps you could double check anyway. I'll be tied up for the next couple of days but will try to complete the work on Monday. In the meantime, if you are interested, you can see most of my edits in the intermediate versions but these are not correctly formatted. I would personally, btw, have appreciated a bit more on the artist's reception over the years and would also have liked to find external links which point to representative examples of his work. - Ipigott (talk) 19:27, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Well I'm not too keen on boxes for artists' biographies either - so we can agree to disagree. I've been through the article and made a number of copy edits in the hope that these do not change the thrust of your presentation. I also provided a direct link to the WJ gallery at africobra.com in the hope that it will provide an immediate illustration of his work to people like me who do not notice weblinks in boxes. On the subject of "reception", I could also be bold but I thought it would be best to draw your attention to three sites which may be of interest: you can turn them up here, here, and here. Not much perhaps but it does seem to show that there is increasing interest in WJ's work. And of course you should be receiving more reactions yourself from the exhibition at the museum which inspired you to write the article. You are doing a great job. I very much hope that the article is rated GA. It would provide some balance in coverage of the American art scene. Next Children's Museum Backstage Pass

Hello! I wanted to personally invite you to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis' 2nd Backstage Pass and Edit-a-Thon, which will occur on Saturday, August 20. The Wikipedian in Residence project is coming up on one year and is going strong. While the first year focused on garnering institutional enthusiasm among staff, organizing multiple content donations, and guiding teens in research and article creation, the next year will focus on establishing an E-Volunteer program and more deliberately connecting with local Wikipedians and WikiProjects around the world.
