April 2011

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. I noticed via your talkback that you had looked at contributions by w:User:fedosin to Ball lighting. I have raised some related concerns at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Speculative_physics_theories_being_promoted_in_Wikipedia_and_Wikiversity betsythedevine (talk) 15:10, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Review Please

Hi Reaper. You nailed me with a rapid delete and I was shot down ten minutes into creating a new page (faster than speeding bullet grasshopper). I've created a draft in a subpage to my user page. I'd like a quick look and feedback if you would be so kind. I think I have enough critical mass for an initial page without risking a repeat but would like your opinion before I venture out again. Thanks in advance. Wundermac (talk) 02:35, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about the speediness, but Wikipedia get loads of articles on companies that meet A7, which is why those articles get zapped so fast. I looked at your article, and I'm afraid it does not meet the notability guideline for corporations. While it won't get speedily deleted, it would get taken to WP:AFD and probably deleted after seven days. To demonstrate notability, you need to add reliable, 3rd-party sources to the article. A good place to look is news outlets. Have they been covered for something on MSNBC? If so, then add the source. Reaper Eternal (talk) 00:55, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

dragonflysixtyseven

I think that you should look into Dragonflysixtyseven, because he is deleting people's pages for idiotic reasons. i went to his talk page and apparently many people are having this problem. for instance, icebxx had his page deleted, from my understanding, because of the way in which he spelled his username. this is ridiculous. in my opinion he should have his admin account deleted for taking advantage of his power. Many people work very hard on their accounts, and to have those accounts deleted for reasons such as "overly promotional" is just ridiculous. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kakmasters (talkcontribs) 16:30, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

DragonflySixtyseven is perfectly in accordance with Wikipedia's policies for deleting spam pages. Anyway, what do you expect to get by vandalizing his userpage? Reaper Eternal (talk) 16:34, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Playlist

I just love it when everyone says "Keep but add more references" but never proves that any references exist. I've found NO references at all that would work. Have you found any, or are you just being a rabid inclusionist? Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 19:31, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Judging by your recent edits, I would strongly encourage you to step away from the computer for a couple hours before you completely embarrass yourself. (BTW, I found over 5000 hits on Google scholar.) Reaper Eternal (talk) 20:07, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
But are any of them relevant? Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 20:36, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, and a couple are in the article now. I have also added enough news sources which shows that this passes WP:GNG. Reaper Eternal (talk) 21:32, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Sometimes throwing a wikitantrum helps doesn't it? If I hadn't beaten everyone over the head in the AFD, that article would still be unsourced. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 21:42, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
If all you wanted was the article to be sourced, why didn't you do it yourself? WP:BEFORE does mention that nominators should make a good-faith check to see if sources exist, and I found many references to playlists on the first Google news search. Imperfect articles do not need to be deleted. Reaper Eternal (talk) 10:31, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

speedy deletion of Dann McKenna please??

Hey Reaper, this article is being used by User:Dannmckenna for a bio. And It is not constructive.. Speedy Delete?VoteDemOut! (talk) 16:50, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

The article is not unconstructive, but it is about a completely unremarkable person. Tagged for speedy deletion per A7 as an unimportant person. Reaper Eternal (talk) 16:55, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Requests for permissions

Thanks for marking Firasbd's request; I didn't know KingpinBot looked for those templates. Personally, I'd use {{done}} for a request where the user already has the permission. It's friendlier, and shows that the request wasn't actually denied. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 22:12, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

I've always seen the {{not done}} template used when the user is autoconfirmed, and this makes sense since the 'confirmed' flag was not added. I really don't think it looks like a denied request since it says just above: "You are already autoconfirmed." Reaper Eternal (talk) 00:58, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
The advantage of the other method is that it tells at a glance whether the user have the requested permission or not. I think ideally we would have a set of templates specifically for that page, like those at UAA and RFPP. For example,
and so on. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 02:16, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
That would be nice, but the bot would have to be updated. Reaper Eternal (talk) 21:33, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
See here for input from Kingpin13. {{done}} should be used when the user has the permission, (counting autoconfirmed as confirmed) and {{notdone}} should be used when the user doesn't have the permission. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 20:49, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I see! I will do so in the future. However, there is a current request on Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Confirmed where Gfoley4 (talk · contribs) did the same thing as I. Reaper Eternal (talk) 10:33, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Mountain View Middle School (Spokane)

Hello Reaper Eternal,

Article Mountain View Middle School (Spokane) has just bee created, and I am working on it. Article will be improved in matter of minutes, please give it a little more time to expand. Best regards Gleb (talk) 02:43, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

It has only been PRODed, so there is no rush. You have a week to improve it, and you are allowed to remove the PROD tag at any time. Reaper Eternal (talk) 02:45, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Whoa

Please reconsider this. Trust me when I say that what BuickCenturyDriver claims happened does in fact happen a lot, at least to me. This, for example, when I "cut in front of" two other questions and didn't get a peep of complaint from the software. 28bytes (talk) 03:05, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

On an unrelated note, congrats on the EFM flag, I have no doubt you'll put it to good use. 28bytes (talk) 03:07, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I understand edit conflicts happen a lot, and I personally have accidentally deleted admin comments at WP:RFPP. I thought I had restored all comments, but it turned out I had not. However, he claims to have edit-conflicted with Jasper Deng's previous edit, which, if true, would have eliminated all the edits between his and Jasper's. I would have been fine with that (and would have restored the edits). I was expecting a rationale along the lines of "Sorry, I edit-conflicted, looked at the added edits since the page I had been editing, and restored the comments. I must have missed Reaper's and Jasper's." or "I removed your comments for valid reason xxx." I would have been fine with either. However, he claims on separate occasions to have 1) had an edit conflict, and 2) not known what happened! That suggests he may be trying to cover up his mistake in removing comments. Reaper Eternal (talk) 03:17, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
It is indeed possible to accidentally delete earlier previous comments but not later previous comments (if that makes sense) due to the way the software attempts to reconcile which sections of the page have changed and which haven't. It seems illogical, but I really have seen it on edits I've made. (I wish I could provide a diff, but it's buried deep in my contribs someplace.) I do agree, though, that once it was pointed out he should have taken the initiative to restore them. 28bytes (talk) 03:21, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
If that is possible (I had thought it wasn't, and that all intermediate edits would be erased), then I am striking my oppose. Reaper Eternal (talk) 03:24, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
What can I say, software can be a very strange beast sometimes. Thank you for reconsidering. 28bytes (talk) 03:25, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
I am always open to reconsidering my oppose !votes if people can convince me that my reasoning is flawed. It would be extremely petty to keep an oppose simply because "I !voted and I am never wrong!" That type of attitude can ruin people's enjoyment of Wikipedia. Thanks for letting me know, as I would not want to oppose a user for a faulty reason. Reaper Eternal (talk) 03:28, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
That is an excellent attitude to have. The opposite approach ("well... now I'm opposing for this reason") can be quite infuriating to encounter. I speak from experience. :) 28bytes (talk) 03:33, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
I too am impressed by this, especially retracting such a definitive oppose. And congrats on becoming an edit filter manager! Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 03:47, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
I think it was necessary to address this concern. I'm glad it was resolved. Now, I'll be able to watch my nome with a little more peace of mind.  :)   –BuickCenturyDriver 06:56, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
On an aside, thanks for the encouragement on EFM! Reaper Eternal (talk) 03:31, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Paul Gunn (drummer)

Hello Reaper Eternal. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Paul Gunn (drummer), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Thank you. Salvio Let's talk about it! 12:44, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Hmm.... Maybe I was a little fast on the A7 tag, since the author added claims of importance after the tag. Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:06, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Armin Grün

Hi. Just letting you know I have declined your CSD. The article has been considerably developed since and is about a notable academic. It's still unsourced, so I've BLPPRODed it instead. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:55, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

The "improvements" consist solely of copy-pasting content from <http://www.photogrammetry.ethz.ch/general/persons/agruen.html>. Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:01, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Good work. I have left a suitable message on the creator's tp. Nevertheless, it would have been perfectly in order for you to slap a CSD COPYVIO on it. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:33, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! CSD G12 really wouldn't have applied because there was a non-copyvio version in the history to which I could revert. Reaper Eternal (talk) 03:07, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
We can agree to differ on that, but I believe CSD COPIVIO can apply any time to any visible content. © is one of our most strictly enforced core policies. It's what I would have done without any hesitation, regardless of what had been in the article before - especially as I had already previously asked the creator to clean up their act. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:16, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

FYI, I restored Minimac's post-close oppose on that RfA and updated the stats accordingly. 43 minutes might have been a little hasty. 28bytes (talk) 17:26, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Also, you forgot to update the alphabetical list. ;) —DoRD (talk) 17:32, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
This one? 28bytes (talk) 17:34, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Yep, but this is what I meant. —DoRD (talk) 17:37, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Ah, gotcha. Thought that indent meant me! 28bytes (talk) 17:41, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
I'll wait a little longer next time, but I had figured that with three opposes already and only 100 edits, that RFA was just going to get snowed under within a couple more hours, and I didn't want him to be bitten. Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:00, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I understand. I admit, it's a little bit of a balancing act... seeing a "closed, not now" less than an hour after transcluding probably feels like a bite, but an eventual pile-on of a dozen opposes and no supports wouldn't be too fun either. I'd probably be tempted to close one very early if I thought the nomination was going to provoke a bunch of snide or cruel opposes, but with this one, the opposers (Minimac's especially) were offering tips for a successful number 2, which the candidate probably wouldn't receive otherwise. But eh, not a big deal either way. I certainly wouldn't have reverted you! 28bytes (talk) 18:22, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Heh, Minimac's oppose came after the oppose close, so I hadn't seen that. Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:28, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Well, that's what you get for failing to predict the future. ;) 28bytes (talk) 18:32, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
^^ LOL what am I saying? Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:33, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
...and I just did the same thing (closed one after 53 minutes), so I should probably trout myself for lecturing you about it. :/ 28bytes (talk) 20:11, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, that RFA was going nowhere very quickly. I can't blame you for telling me it wasn't a good plan to close quickly, since it does appear bitey. However, the alternative is usually worse.... This is why I think there should be "endorsements" that you need to get before your RFA goes live. Reaper Eternal (talk) 20:15, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

At one point I was considering proposing full protection for WP:RFA; if you wanted your RfA transcluded, you'd add an edit-protected request to the talk page and any admin could transclude it for you if they thought it wouldn't be a quick-fail. A few big downsides to that approach, though. 28bytes (talk) 20:34, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Honestly, that isn't a bad idea. Reaper Eternal (talk) 21:14, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive newsletter

The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

We look forward to meeting you on the drive! Your GOCE coordinators: SMasters, Diannaa, Tea with toast, Chaosdruid, and Torchiest

Hi Reaper. Sorry I didn't reply for so long. Thank you for sending me a copy of your bot. I've been poking around to see how it works, and the comments have been very helpful. User:Jana.l

Hi Reaper, I've removed the G10 nomination that you placed on this page... this is a userfied version of the deleted page Jana Loh, written by the user, apparently about herself. Thanks, Catfish Jim (ex-soapdish) 10:46, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Somebody, claiming to be the user in question, has stated here that she does not know who wrote the page about her and that it is false. Additionally, I doubt that she would want to be identified as "one of Singapore's best procrastinators". Reaper Eternal (talk) 12:35, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, Wikipedia is full of procrastinators, myself one of them, but that's incidental. It's not as if User:Jana.l particularly active on Wikipedia, so I've given the matter the benefit of doubt and removed the article. Catfish Jim (ex-soapdish) 12:53, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry... we edited together on Stongest dog and I speedied it after you redirected. I'm thinking to leave the speedy on there given the misspelling of the title. Is that ok? Wikipelli Talk 14:47, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Heh, I hadn't noticed the missing "r" initially. Yes, the page should be deleted. Reaper Eternal (talk) 14:50, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

(Moved from above)

Sir, it has come to my attention that you are not aware of the hard working scientists at Yale University, and discredit their earthworm reproduction studies. It is a fact that they reproduce when Le Freak by Chic is playing at the club they meet up at. This is ancient history, and has been documented dating as far back as 1000 BC in cave paintings. Where have you been? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.20.76.83 (talk) 20:27, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

I would believe it if you could provide a reliable source. Reaper Eternal (talk) 20:30, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
While I do admit that the issue of earthworm reproduction has not received much coverage in the news, it is fact that an earthworms mating ritual takes place in disco clubs while Le Freak by Chic is playing. If you sincerely do not believe me, I suggest trying this out for your self. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.20.76.83 (talk) 20:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Apazauca Spider

Hello, just fyi: I've merged a gist of that new article to Percy Fawcett. The spider thing was actually not a hoax by the WP author but some strange unverified beast this explorer claimed to have seen in Bolivia. So if at all we might award a posthumous hoax warning to Mr. Fawcett. Happy editing, De728631 (talk) 17:52, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Hmm...I was confused by the presentation. I though the author was trying to claim this was a real creature. Reaper Eternal (talk) 00:34, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

User talk:Bausshackerhf

Hey Reaper, consider using the "welcomevandal" template instead of just a bare level-1 vandalism warning. It's nicer and more useful to them--if they have any good intentions, which at the moment is arguably doubtful. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 23:05, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

That's not possible considering that I'm using an antivandalism tool. I am also not interested in taking the time to welcome everybody who inserts "penis", "gay", or "fuck you" into articles. The {{uw-vandalism1}} template assumes enough good faith for edits like these. [1] [2] [3] Reaper Eternal (talk) 23:11, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, but that it's not possible is not a great reason. I use Twinkle, and it makes it easy, and it can be done by hand as well, easily enough. This particular user committed, as their first act on Wikipedia, a silly act of blanking--no fuck yous or penises were involved, only a burger, as far as I can tell. Either way, for someone who took the time to register, one can take an extra moment--and if it happens that it is a vandalism-only account, you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that you gave them enough rope to hang themselves with. Thanks for all your good work, but please take that extra moment. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 23:16, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I use either igloo or Huggle, and neither of them gives the option to welcome the user instead of warning them for vandalism. Additionally, please read the first line of the {{uw-vandalism1}} template: "Welcome to Wikipedia". It doesn't even say "Please do not vandalize"; rather, it assumes good faith and says "one of your edits did not appear to be constructive". It then directs the user to the welcome page to learn more about contributing, in case their effort was a good faith effort to contribute, and the sandbox, in case their edit was a test. In any event, replacing a page with "A hacker is a person who eats burger" [4] is pure childish vandalism, so per WP:VAND I could start with a level-2 warning for intentional nonsense. Reaper Eternal (talk) 23:37, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
You can do whatever you like, of course. I'd like to remind you that we're on the same team (which is why I left you a friendly message, without a reference to WP:BITE), and that there is no award given to whoever hands out the greatest number of vandalism warnings. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 23:43, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Drmies, this was blatant vandalism, and we cannot be welcoming that. While I understand we should be welcoming to newcomers, we also cannot be coddling the vandals. –MuZemike 23:53, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Hence the "vandal" in "welcomevandal". I'm not coddling anyone, and if you look you'd see that I deleted the editor's first article contribution. Drmies (talk) 01:04, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Category typo?

Hi, I noticed you added Olympi players to Abdoulaye Wagne as a category. I see there's a few other people in that category but wonder if it's a typo for Olympic. Cloveapple (talk) 02:24, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Oh, I hadn't noticed the missing "c" in that category. I changed the category to Category:Olympic athletes (track and field) for greater precision. I am not certain what that category is for. Reaper Eternal (talk) 02:29, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Gay

Hm, I appear to be "accused" of being gay all over the place at the moment. First in the edit you were involved with on BoingSaidZebedee's TP, and now here. Is this the choice random insult du jour or what? Boing has restored the comment, btw, and I understand why - there are likely to be some pretty long blocks coming up relating to the Nair article. - Sitush (talk) 16:47, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I have no clue what is going on over there :P . However, the "gay" insults are likely to result in NPA blocks. Reaper Eternal (talk) 00:25, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure that Boing has a clue, in the sense that you mean the word. He has said that the article subject matter goes right over his head at a stratospheric level. Me, well, I've done a lot of digging on these controversial subjects over a fairly short space of time (four months or so, I think - I read fast). The statements which, I assume, are intended to be insults go over my head just as much as the article subject matter flies over that of Boing. It is school playground stuff. And with wi-fi + mobile broadband in many parts of the world now, perhaps it actually was posted from a school playground!
Boing appears to have confidence that the Nair article is being improved in accordance with policy etc. I would like to think that is not a decision that taxed his mind unduly. The other article, in which User:Marleshy has been involved, is just a pain - I have zero interest in it, other than BLP maintenance. I think that it came on to my radar when patrolling articles with {{reflist}} problems.
FWIW, I am white, British, straight ... but profoundly deaf from birth. I have never been able to hear a word. Alas, I can see them. Now, if people started kicking off about deafness (unlikely here) then I might actually get offended. But would still keep the sign language to myself. <g> - Sitush (talk) 00:46, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
