Admin help

{{adminhelp}}

How do I request sanctions on another editor? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:10, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Generally, the administrators' noticeboard for incidents is where you post your complaint. If it's arbitration enforcement related, go there instead. If it's sock puppetry, sockpuppet investigations can be filed. If it's simple vandalism, request administrator intervention here. It's rather hard to answer such a general question without knowing what the relevant issue is. Cheers! Reaper Eternal (talk) 21:54, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
@Reaper Eternal: Thanks. It was a matter of uncivil behavior. But I have decided to let the matter drop. Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:19, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Unblocked range

Hi Brian, just wanted to let you know: I unblocked 104.236.0.0/16, which you blocked as a web host in June. It (or at least part of it) is actually used for home Internet service. Let me know if this is a problem. -Pete (talk) 18:16, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Uhmm, that range is owned by DigitalOcean, a web dev cloud computing group. I find it rather doubtful that they are using that range as an ISP. Reaper Eternal (talk) 21:57, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I can confirm that 104.236.0.0/16 is almost exclusively used by Digital Ocean for their NYC3 region (default) droplets. - NQ (talk) 03:18, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

CheckUser Request

Since only admins, not editors, can open sock puppet investigations, I am formally requesting a CheckUser inquiry into User:Tarc on the basis of the following:

As noted on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Michael_Gurnow, Tarc's comments on the AfD chronologically concur with User:Kraxler, cf. comments on 8/8/15 (I list Tarc first because, per Wiki protocol, the oldest account is requested in such matters). These began appearing after User:Orangemike opened the AfD and, suspiciously since nominators typically remain present throughout the discussion, actively participated in the debate prior to his sudden, extended absence^ followed by both Tarc and Kraxler's emergence once the article was relisted.

^ - Orangemike has edited several accounts since his last post on this page.

Could you please look into whether this is possible sock puppetry or, what more closely resembles the pattern of meat puppetry, among the three admin accounts?

Thank you. SnowdenFan (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 09:46, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

That's rather cheeky for somebody who appeared here last February. Kraxler (talk) 13:09, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
I admit it; I also edit under the accounts "Jimbo Wales", "Willy on Wheels", "HAGGER", and Grundle2600. Do I get a last meal & cigarette before execution? Tarc (talk) 13:29, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

List of New South Wales railway station codes

Hi, just interested to know why you added back all that unreferenced content at List of New South Wales railway station codes. It's clearly never going to have a citation, as the conversation from seven years ago demonstrates. Mqst north (talk) 08:57, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Anyway, I'm not sure how best to proceed with having the page deleted, but I have carefully reviewed both tables and found stations and stops that do not exist, and haven't existed for decades, as well as regional stations in the city table and vice versa. I have removed both. I think the source might have been an internal railways document from the 1970s. Even if it was up-to-date and referenced, no-one has ever explained why a list of internal corporate abbreviations is remotely noteworthy. Mqst north (talk) 09:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Nominate it for deletion using the articles for deletion process so it can be discussed, or, if all of the information in it is demonstrably false, you can nominate it for speedy deletion as a hoax. The speedy deletion criterion for empty pages requires that the page have never had any content whatsoever. I only restored the content to remove the speedy deletion tag as an invalid use, not because I have any interest in the content remaining on Wikipedia. Cheers! Yikes

Hi Reaper, I was casually perusing the ArbCom AE PD talk page yesterday, and ran across the claim that an admin said something on IRC about giving another editor an acid bath. First I'd heard of it. It took me a while to track down where this came from, but I guess it was in your comments on the initial case request. It sounds like you were satisfied with a cease and desist demand - or, perhaps, didn't think anything further was feasible - but I'm not sure that satisifes me. The Arbs appear to have decided to drop this because what happens on IRC stays on IRC, but I'm contemplating bringing a case request against the admin who did it. If nothing else, I'd like arbs to have to publicly accept or decline.

My questions:

  1. I gather that there is no question about who this admin is. Is that correct?
  2. Are there logs?
  3. Can you tell me which IRC channel it was? If it's on a publicly accessible channel like the help channel, I'm definitely bringing a case request, even if I don't know anything more than what I know now; if on a hidden one like the admins only channel, I may or may not.
  4. Biggest question: since you know who it is, and I don't: do you feel like this was a one-off, or does this fit in with a pattern of behavior on-wiki? If you believe an ArbCom case would really be disproportionate, I'll respect your judgement and drop it.
  5. Are you allowed/are you willing to tell me who it was (by email)? If you do, I'll promise not to name them on-wiki unless I get your permission first. I would, of course, want to be able to name names in an email to ArbCom, but I gather they already know. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:02, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Your answers are:
  1. There is no question about who he or she was.
  2. I log everything.
  3. It was in #wikipedia-en-admins. It's possible people have said other things in the publicly accessible channels, but I never go there.
  4. I don't know much about their on-wiki or WMF activities or interactions. I never really interacted with them much on IRC either. They have made...non-neutral comments in the past on IRC, but nothing of the magnitude of the comment I castigated them for.
  5. ArbCom already knows who they are. An arbitrator contacted me privately asking for the name and logs, which I turned over to them. I have no intention of starting a pitchfork-and-torches mob, so I won't be naming names.
In short, it was disgustingly inappropriate and I wish ArbCom had sanctioned them for it rather than dropping it since the "IRC admins" did nothing about it. If similar comments happen again on IRC, I am quite willing to block them on-wiki for gross personal attacks. If you are going to be bringing a case against said user (privately), I am willing to give you the logs scrubbed of names (except mine). I hope this helps. Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:01, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I got distracted by a bit of my own idiocy and didn't notice you'd replied. I'm not sure what I want to do, to be honest. My inclination was to start a public request for a case, because it's too easy to just not act on something on the mailing list, and I at least think those Arbs who don't want to do anything should have to publically decline the case. But I also don't want to spin my wheels on something that will achieve nothing, or re-open cause a wound that's now got a scab on it. If ArbCom already has the log, then I don't think you need to go to the trouble of making a scrubbed copy for me. Maybe a 1-sentence note with the exact terminology of the comment itself would be handy. Thanks, --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:10, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
ArbCom just has the one comment, which consists solely of:
25 [10:46:34] <admin1> So I personally want to give Eric a bath in hydrofluoric acid
24 [10:46:42] <KittyReaper> Whoa
24 [10:47:00] <KittyReaper> admin1: You're an asshole
2 [10:47:32] <admin1> KittyReaper: I have known this my entire life. If you want to come and kill me you can have my home address.
"KittyReaper" is, of course, me. The whole conversation is much, much longer with multiple admins, and I won't post it here since it's fairly obvious which admin it is if I were to post the entire conversation, both before and after. There is significantly more, but ArbCom wasn't interested in the rest. I can email you a scrubbed log if you want. Blech. Reaper Eternal (talk) 16:17, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
Blech, indeed. Floq, I admire your desire to make people answer for their cowardice, but I think you may be fighting years of received "wisdom" that IRC is Wikipedia's Vegas: What happens on IRC stays on IRC. I've seen it so many times. "Bastard bitch from hell", "fucking wanker" and now "acid bath" are some of the gems of the admins channel that ArbCom has nicely ignored over time (exact wording may vary some; most of these examples are from 2008 or so). Not pleased about ArbCom's doing so, as it gives the cowards a bully pulpit, but my opinion doesn't seem to have swayed ArbCom much. Floq, hey, maybe you'll be more successful than I was. I'm just really not holding my breath. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 10:21, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Yes, it's me

Pashtun American and Nemat Sadat

Can you please explain why you think it's "Ridiculous speedy tags" [1] and "Invalid use of A11"? [2] The Nemat Sadat article was created by Nemat Sadat himself. [3] Regarding Pashtun American, there is no such thing. The creator of that article is a Pakistani editor from Australia who not only doesn't know anything about America but is often putting down Afghans while glorifying Pakistanis. In this case, he's attempting to give Afghan Americans a new (never heard of before) name, and you're supporting him with your edits. Those people in the article never called themselves Pashtun American and nobody recognize them by that silly name. I question your neutrality as an admin.--Krzyhorse22 (talk) 15:47, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

If he wrote his own article, then how on earth was he "made up"? He seems like a real person to me. Reaper Eternal (talk) 20:53, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
  • The Pashtun American is completely "made up" and should be speedy deleted per WP:A10 or WP:A11. See Talk:Pashtun American.
  • Regarding Nemat Sadat, he is not notable and that one also qualifies to be speedy deleted. WP:YOURSELF states, in relevant part: "Many people exaggerate their own significance or notability above what third parties would think. If you are not "notable" under Wikipedia guidelines, an article you create about yourself may qualify for speedy deletion." Nemat Sadat is simply not notable under Wikipedia guidelines, and there are no reliable sources to verify the information he writes in his own article.--Krzyhorse22 (talk) 14:40, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far   Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was   Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1.   Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2.   Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4.   Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5.   West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6.   Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7.   Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8.   Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,

You blocked a bunch of these socks a few months ago. I'm not familiar with this particular sock. I think I ran into some more accounts. I noticed that there has been a bunch of new accounts all editing their user talk pages regarding women's volleyball.

Query

Reaper Eternal,

Note: Not asking for you to comment or participate anywhere if you do not wish to do so, only specifically asking if you'd like to serve as a mentor to me.

You trusted me enough to promote me in 2011 from rollbacker to rollbacker, autopatrolled and file mover -- and I greatly thank you for your trust.

Since that time, I've devoted myself to Quality improvement efforts to bring articles to WP:GA and WP:FA, as I've noted here.

Would you be willing to serve as a mentor for me?

An ArbCom member made a comment here that a mentor might be a good idea with regards to this appeal.

Thank you for your trust in me, and your time,

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is   Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science.   Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to   Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Your voter guide

Hello. I prefer transclude your voter guide (and the others) into a single page (to facilitate reading and comparisons).

  1. When doing that, the resulting page becomes a member of the [[Category:Wikipedia Arbitration Committee Elections 2015 voter guides]]. To correct that, the Category in your page should be protected by a pair of <noinclude>...</noinclude>.
  2. Moreover, you are using second level sections, i.e. ==xxx==, in your guide. After transclusion, the TOC looks bad. If you were using third level sections, i.e. ===xxx===, the TOC would look better. (problem solved)

In the Main space, I would have done that by myself. In your Userspace, I think it is polite to ask your permission. Pldx1 (talk) 20:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Not sure what happened

I've been editing earlier today under 32.218.44.88. I started getting my edits on Amy Vedder rejected for no apparent reason. (They were innocuous edits, like wikilinking terms.) Then all of a sudden, my edits were completely blocked, and the notice showed my IP address as 127.0.0.1. I looked at the user contributions for 127.0.0.1, and sure enough, two of my Amy Vedder edits were listed there. Even more curious, your block note "If this IP is making edits, it indicates a server misconfiguration" is something I don't understand. I reset my modem, so that now I'm 32.218.38.238 and can edit. I'm not trying to circumvent any block; I'm just trying to understand what went on. Can you explain it to me? 32.218.38.238 (talk) 01:07, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Just noting this has now been fixed by ops, so you should now be able to edit as normal. Mdann52 (talk) 10:13, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hey, I didn't see you on IRC? Hope everything is alright. I was wondering if you could set up DroneBot's template vandalism detection functionality again? Would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 01:58, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Quick Question regarding Wikipedia administrators willing to grant rollback requests

Hiyas!

I seen you were one of the Admins in that category? How does that work? Thanks! --Giooo95 (talk) 06:03, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) You may request rollback rights at WP:PERM/R. However, I don't think you are ready yet. sst✈(discuss) 02:03, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Was this a joke?

Hey, Reaper Eternal. I just got sent this. Is this a joke? I can't really read the talk layout of Wikipedia's UI that well, so I need some help. It doesn't look real but I just don't know where it came from or why I got it. Thanks for your time. The message is below:

NOTICE OF INTENDED LITIGATION. On inspecting your recent contributions to wikipedia, we have determined that you have brought the site into disrepute. This kind of reputational damage to a world-leading website (and to one of the international community's most respected individuals/philanthropists) costs in excess of hundreds of thousands of US$ per year. We are therefore to commence legal proceedings against the operator of this IP immediately, and will be seeking a large sum in compensation, largerthan you can afford! Ha.

Don't worry, someone was just spam-posting garbage. I've blocked the person from editing Wikipedia and deleted the nonsense. No serious lawyer would send a legal note on a Wikipedia talk page. Good luck! Reaper Eternal (talk) 22:26, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Requesting rollback

The user Helmoony is mass-removing "Tunisian arabic" in articles that was in place since several months. after the debate in Tunisia portal in september, an admin finally decided to grant the mention of Tunisian arabic for the names of people and places. Things were so settled since then, but the user Helmoony is recently removing all the mentions, could you please do something about it ? Thank you.Zangouang (talk) 16:25, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Quick request

I ran across your comment at the arbitration noticeboard's talk page, regarding the emails your college sends out; I assume this means that your grad program is either UC or something else in the Cincinnati area. As a result, I've got a quick request — if you have a camera, would you be able/willing to take and upload photos from a couple of spots? (1) The Bon Air Flats, 615 Maple Avenue in Avondale, 39°8′31″N 84°29′37.5″W / 39.14194°N 84.493750°W / 39.14194; -84.493750; it's a few hundred feet west of Reading Road, just south of Forest Avenue, where the zoo is. (2) The Mohawk Place neighborhood, 39°7′13″N 84°31′26″W / 39.12028°N 84.52389°W / 39.12028; -84.52389, immediately northeast of Central Parkway at the extreme northwestern corner of OTR, right near the Linn Street traffic light where you can turn to get into the West End easily.

Years ago, I got photos for all Hamilton County locations on the National Register of Historic Places, and I've gotten new photos as additional sites have been designated, but these two spots just recently got added, and I've not been in Cincinnati since early August.

Of course, if this isn't easy to do, or if you don't feel like doing it (or if I've somehow misunderstood, and you're not in the Cincinnati area at all), no complaints. Nyttend (talk) 19:30, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

It is. However, I don't have a camera. Thanks though! Reaper Eternal (talk) 23:00, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
