Uninvolved comment on Fae case edit

As I've said elsewhere, I've been lurking this case, although I'm pretty completely uninvolved. I do weigh in a little on talk pages, though. In this case, my two cents in response to your question at [1] are that I think he was saying that although it's fact he created the page, he considers the accusation to be that he created it in order to ridicule Fae. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 18:54, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, he's now clarified (!) that he means to expose Fae, rather than harass him. Not sure I see the difference myself... Prioryman (talk) 23:40, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Again, just thoughts, but perhaps the difference to him is that "exposing" is a public criticism of Fae's behavior, while "harrasment" is an attack on Fae as a person? In other words, the difference would be between saying "X did some really stupid things that everyone should know about" and saying "X is an idiot." That's a very blurry line, especially since the responses could be expected to cross it, but it's the only one I can see. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 19:56, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not sure in what context you mean kemosabe but it's probably not necessary to advance the argument you're making there. Nobody Ent 17:29, 9 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

C'mon, you must remember the old gag about the Lone Ranger and Tonto heading into danger; the Lone Ranger asks Tonto, "what do we do now?" to which Tonto replies, "what you mean 'we,' kemosabe?" Prioryman (talk) 17:44, 9 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your Arbitration evidence is too long edit

Hello, Prioryman. Thank you for your recent submission of evidence for the Fæ Arbitration case. As you may be aware, the Arbitration Committee asks that users submitting evidence in cases adhere to limits regarding the length of their submissions. These limits, currently at 1000 words and 100 diffs for parties and 500 words and 50 diffs for all others, are in place to ensure that the Arbitration Committee receives only the most important information relevant to the case, and is able to determine an appropriate course of action in a reasonable amount of time. The evidence you have submitted currently exceeds at least one of these limits, and is presently at 648 words and 6 diffs. Please try to reduce the length of your submission to fit within these limits; this guide may be able to provide some help in doing so. If the length of your evidence is not reduced soon, it may be refactored or removed by a human clerk within a few days. Thank you! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the case, please contact the drafting Arbitrator or case clerk (listed on the case pages); if you have any questions or concerns about this bot, please contact the operator. On behalf of the Arbitration Committee, HersfoldArbClerkBOT(talk) 14:02, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Clarification, re: Wikipediocracy account edit

I'll bring this here since it'd be a bit far afield from the Arbcom Workshop. The link I provided is to a Wikipediocracy account, and account named the same as your former Wikipedia account, minus the "O". This account joined Mar 18, 2012 and has made a total of 14 posts, 12 of which are visible (2 presumably hidden to some off-topic/tarpit relocation) between Mar 19 - Apr 26. One post was in regards to Delicious Carbuncle and the Common's "donkey punch" image, 5 in a discussion of Jim Hawkins, then some 1s and 2s in a Commons deletion discussion, a discussion about Anders Breivik, etc... The Hawkins thread there is notable for the defense of Fae that the Wikipediocracy account mounted, several times... Also of note; the last time the account logged in (but did not post) was today Wed Jun 13, 2012 at 4:46pm (EST, I believe).

For the record, you are saying that this account is not yours? Tarc (talk) 22:02, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Nope, certainly not mine. Who's Jim Hawkins, out of curiosity? I can't be bothered to Google the name and it's not familiar to me. Did the Wikipediocracy user ever claim to be me? Prioryman (talk) 22:14, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Jim Hawkins (radio presenter), big OTRS, privacy kerfuffle in March. Consider it retracted, then. Tarc (talk) 00:37, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Curious, why mark this account as a sock of an account indeffed six years ago? I'm not disputing the idea that it's a malicious sock (who would innocently create that username?), and thus I've created an SPI to request checkuser for sleepers, but I'm just confused about your opinion on the sockmaster's identity. Beaminster Tunnel edit

Hello Prioryman, I'm considering doing something that probably falls under WP:IAR, so I'd like to drop you a note before I do it so that you are not completely surprised. You are also very welcome to revert the alteration, and I will respect it.

  • Thank you for creating the User:Prioryman/Beaminster Tunnel article in your userspace, I'd come looking to do the same and found most of it was already there!
  • I've made some changes[4]; added categories, an overview image, alternate names, and notability and a reference for the current deaths that have brought the tunnel more attention.
  • I've sorted the OpenStreetMap side too, so the geodata representation should draw too.
  • My intention would be now to move it to article space, so that it gains more visibility, and can be expanded first.
  • This means "messing around" with your user space, however, the currency in the news would be seen as reasonable grounds in this case.

Once again, thank you for starting the article, and you are most welcome to revert the move if you would prefer. —Sladen (talk) 09:56, 19 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Update: Moved[5], Fixed[6], and Redirected[7]. I've left the userspace redirects at User:Prioryman/Beaminster Tunnel and User talk:Prioryman/Beaminster Tunnel, so things should be less confusing if you find the move before this message. This can probably be tagged G6 if you're happy with the result. (And if not, please do revert). —Sladen (talk) 10:03, 19 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Template:Did you know nominations/2012 Yahoo! Voice hack - your comments edit

Hi,

I saw your comments at Template:Did you know nominations/2012 Yahoo! Voice hack and was puzzled because I often see news websites change their titles after the article is published. USAtoday, for example, will usually change the title on their web page from the one published in their hardcopy. So I don't see how the wiki-article creator can be held responsible for that.

As far as declining the DYK request, yes the article needs work, but unfortunately no one is pitching in to help the article creator. Ottawahitech (talk) 16:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

There's no chance that there was a change in the article titles. The article creator was clearly rewriting the titles himself. The URLs were a giveaway - the article at http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizons/2012/0712/Yahoo-hack-steals-400-000-passwords.-Is-yours-on-the-list is a case in point. The URL gives the article's title, the publisher is a US news outlet, the falsified title referred to "4.5 lacs" - the article creator's own idiosyncratic spelling of the word lakh that so confused SecretLondon in the review - and the ungrammatical and misspelt nature of the falsified title ("is you'rs hacked") showed that it had been written by someone with a shaky grasp of English, rather than the publication. Quite honestly, I felt by the time I'd gone through the article that I simply couldn't trust its accuracy. Prioryman (talk) 20:09, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, friend edit

In case you missed it in the hubbub...

I've been asked to look into this since I closed the RFC. However this has nothing at all to do with the agreement established there, YRC has not broken any of those voluntary restrictions, as has been noted already he is still on the initial wikibreak he agreed to and can't log in. As for the actual issue at hand, it certianly is asking for someone to out Cirt, that much is crystal clear. Is it the same person? We don't know. The fact that he claims he is is not evidence at all, that os exactly what a liar would do. I can't say I support a block based on speculation that he might be some guy on some ther website. (I've always found that the best way to handle such sites is to ignore them entirely, they are mostly full of bitter, angry people and I hardly feel it a good use of my time to hang out at some website where all they do is talk about Wikipedia without ever actually accomplishing anything, but that's just me...) WHY WIKIPEDIOCRACY IS IMPORTANT (for Chris). Wikipedia is a powerful American institution, one of the most dominant presences on the internet. It is a multi-million dollar organization with a professional staff over which there is little or no mechanism for bottom-up control. The pseudo-consensus-decision-making political model employed by Wikipedia itself is an arcane labyrinth, necessarily dominated by long-established insiders. Just as a free opposition press is a fetter to governmental abuse, there needs to be some similar external mechanism of criticism to help ameliorate abuses, challenge hubris, correct problems, and improve the institution. While Wikipediocracy is indeed dominated by "bitter, angry people," this is not to say that it is not to say that even they are incapable of improving the project, albeit indirectly. Even yesterday, a 4-year standing redirect link of the words "Inflated Tits" to a BLP was exposed (and subsequently fixed). If there are abuses, if there are problems, if there are underlying issues at WP, they will surface at Wikipediocracy, often there first. There is also a certain level of annoying whining there, but one can filter that... Carrite (talk) 17:03, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

You really do need to stop viewing everyone who has ever posted at a message board as "members" of something akin to a monolith. The "membership" analogy is false and there is nothing monolithic about the universal set of posters there, which includes the full gamut, ranging from banned editors who want to piss on Wikipedia's grave to others who are devoted to the project.

As for the issue, I've come to the conclusion that it would be wrong to block YRC at the moment, although if he comes back and admits it's him, that's another thing. But I also think that this episode has not helped either Cirt or you, and I'd strongly advise you to try to be as little involved with YRC as possible, and certainly not initiate any more actions involving him. If you must, contact other editors on their talk pages about your concerns and let them decide whether or not to raise them. Please take this seriously.
