Raja Yoga Article edit

Hi Joshua Jonathan. Thanks for your guidance. As suggested by you I have added the statement under one of subsection in this article with reference. The reference that used talks about the practice since it started.

For your reference I have copy past the statement from the reference as it is. The reference is from Hindustan times news paper "Heartfulness is a Raja Yoga system of meditation, also known as ‘Sahaj Marg’ or the ‘Natural Path’. It originated at the turn of the 20th century and was formalised with the founding of the Ram Chandra Mission in 1945 in India." the reference https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/worlds-largest-meditation-centre-in-hyderabad/article30643824.ece Rachel Ross Green Geller (talk) 13:43, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Varna does not apply to Southern Parts of India edit

Johsua, Please do NOT revert again the updates:

For my NON-Indian Wikipedia Authors - who never stepped to any southern part or state of India. Please note this "Misunderstanding" on what you might have read in a text by a white author who never stepped in South India - Varna does NOT apply to Southern Part of India (5 states - Half a Billion People). It is ONLY used in Northern States of India and you CANNOT use it (NOR was used, OR is USED today) to classify any castes or social status in South India. Varna is Invented by Brahmins of North India and applies only to northern parts of ancient India. The Varna system is not accepted by Southern (Dravidian) people, nor was used, nor is used to classify castes of Southern parts of India. For my NON-Indian Wikipedia Authors - who never stepped to any southern part or state of India. Misinformation in the Advaita Vedanta Page. edit

It is so sad that the page of Advaita Vedanta literally says that "Advaita adapted philosophical concepts from Buddhism, giving them a Vedantic basis". This makes it look as if it copied ideas from Buddhism and just reinterpreted those. This is total nonsense. Advaita was heavily influenced by Buddhism, that too only Mahayana Buddhism due to its presence in the Indian intellectual landscape at that time. Mahayana's influence on Advaita is profound but making it look as if it blindly copied ideas is very unfair.

This is not just for Advaita but in the page of every Hindu philosophical system, there is an attempt to portray that it's core ideas came from or were influenced by Buddhism even though the Principal Upanishads, Samkhya and Yoga are older than Buddhism.

Besides no page in Wikipedia ever talks about the influence of Upanishads, Yoga and Samkhya ideas on Mahayana Buddhism even though it is very clear that almost all prominent Mahayana philosophers(like Nagarjuna, Ashvaghosha, etc) were of Brahmin origins.

This bias against Hindu philosophical systems must be taken into account. Wikipedia is almost a bad source to refer Hindu philosophies. 117.215.89.66 (talk) 12:19, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

The current version of the article does not say Advaita Vedanta "copied from Buddhism". Wikipedia merely reports sources that are vetted for reliableness, and the part you're referring to cites an inline citation to a book called A History of Early Vedānta Philosophy.
Here's what page 13 of the cited material says:

[...] but from Deussen onwards, no one has been able to come to any definite conclusions as to what centuries B.C. these Upanisads were composed. That is to say, there has been for the most part agreement as to the sequence of the composition of the Upanishads relative to each other, but to their actual dating, opinion has been divided into many divergent lines of thought. The large majority of scholars of Indology place their date of composition long before the rise of Buddhism, while there are those who assert on the contrary that even the most ancient of the Upanishads cannot be traced back to the 6th century B.C. To tackle this problem, some standard criteria must be sought which can reliably determine the periods of the Upanishads, but the Upanishads themselves are lacking in positive clues. Many personal names appear in the Upanishads, but their dates are completely unknown; furthermore, though the same names appear in the Buddhist and Jain Canons, since it cannot be finally concluded that these names refer in fact to the same individuals, they can not serve as suitable criterion.
— Hajime Nakamura. A History of Early Vedānta Philosophy. p. 13.

I think anyone would agree that Advaita Vedanta came after Buddhism, so it's a matter of reporting WP:RS as to whether it "adopted Buddhist concepts and gave them Vedic basis, and was influenced by various other Indian philosophy" or "taken influence from Buddhism and various other Indian schools of thought". But the formal is more accurate because essentially the concepts of Atman and Anatta between Buddhism and Advaita is "+0" and "0".
If you have a WP:RS that contradicts this, please cite it (or it's best to take this discussion to Talk:Advaita_Vedanta). --WikiLinuz {talk} 18:30, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Vedic Period Article Dates edit

Namaste Joshua Sir. Kindly note that the date for the Vedic Period is from 1910-1200 BCE, since it is has been recorded in the Rigvedam that the Saraswati river, a river near the Sindhu River, got dried up around 1924-1910 BCE, according to modern paleo channel studies. The date is going back to 1910 BCE, to which the prior is the Mahabharata War (1924 BCE) according to the modern archeology and the Puranic Tradition researched by Modern Indologists. Kindly fix the duration of the Vedic Period, ranging from 1910-1200 BCE. Thanks. Namaste. IndianHinduScholar (talk) 12:22, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Nondualism edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Nondualism indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 07:16, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Joshua Jonathan,
Sorry for this unnecessary note but I always notify page creators when I tag a page for deletion or delete a page. I didn't notice that you not only created this category but you also emptied it so that deletion is probably not a problem for you. Other editors have edited the page so I don't think it is eligible for a CSD G7 but the CSD C1 tagging means that it will be deleted in a week if it remains empty.
In the future though, it would probably have been better if you had gone through WP:CFD speedy rename or a regular rename proposal to move Category:Nondualism to Category:Nonduality, then a bot would have moved all of those articles, you wouldn't have had to do so manually and we could have retained that page history. Criticism of Current Buddhism Page Introduction edit

I have several criticism of the Buddhism page introduction. Firstly, it doesn't even mention the name 'Siddhartha Gautama'. It also makes no mention of the mental state of 'Awakening'. It also fails to even briefly discuss the central thesis of Buddhism: Four Noble Truths. It also fails to mention that 'Buddha' means 'the Awakened one', like other, less-salient, pages do, such as 'Outline of Buddhism'. Visitors that are new to Buddhism seeking a concise introduction at the page as it is now, will be at best be left with a vague impression of Buddhism's characteristic tenets that instead downplays disparages the psychological/phenomenological aspect of Buddhism that is quintessential to it. This is an encyclopedic disservice; this is what I was trying to correct before you reversed my edits.

Furthermore, by comparison to other major world religion pages, which all offer a brief explication the central thesis of each respective religion and a brief background of their respective founders' role in the religion, this Buddhist page is inadequate. For example, the Christianity page explicitly states the religion's central thesis: that Jesus Christ is the messiah as prophesied in its antecedent religion, Judaism. The Islam page explains the religion's central tenets: Islam is the main and final Abrahamic religion, Muhammad is the main and final Abrahamic prophet, the Quran is its main and final canonical text, and that God (Allah) is one and incomparable.

My suggestions are:
1. Mention the name 'Siddhartha Gautama' in the first paragraph.
1. Include a concise explication of Buddhism's central thesis (Four Noble Truths) circa the second paragraph in a manner that is informative to a general reader without prior background in Buddhism.
2. Include a concise mention of the identity of the Buddha in Buddhism as 'the Awakened one'. This should include a concise mention of how the cognitive event of 'Awakening' is characterized and its fundamental characterizations (e.g. irreversibility, uniqueness, singularity (occurring once), mindfulness proficiency, Anattā insight etc.)
3. Include that 'The Buddha', which translates as 'the Awakened one', is eponymously named after this mental state, and the religion is eponymously named after this namesake. (This is akin to how it is explained that Hindu is an exonym on its page)

What do you think? SmoovOpr8r (talk) 18:48, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dating of the Mahabharata war in relation to Sarasvati river edit

Hi Joshua,

You recently deleted my edit to the Sarasvati River page where I cited the astronomical dating of the Mahabharata war by Dr Manish Pandit. I understand now that the work I cited was original research published only on Academia. Therefore, I have cited an earlier work from 1891 archived by the university of Toronto which performs a similar analysis.

I hope this should be fine for the WP:OR criteria.

There isn't a hard and fast rule either of law or Wikipedia policy about the length of a quote that can be added, but in my view cutting and pasting such a long chunk of text is definitely out. More detail at WP:COPYPASTE. MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:12, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hakuin Ekaku edit

Hi Joshua Jonathan. You added "Waddell (2009)" to Hakuin Ekaku, but there no work for that date. There 2010a (Foreword to "Wild Ivy: The Spiritual Autobiography of Zen Master Hakuin"), 2010b (Translator's Introduction to "The Essential teachings of Zen Master Hakuin"), and 2002 ("Hakuin's Yasenkanna." In The Eastern Buddhist). Is Waddell 2009 a different work? -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 20:29, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sir About the Hitlers Views on Sikhism topic edit

Adolf Hitler had also read and was inspired by Kavi Santokh Singh's Gurpratap Suraj Granth which was translated into German language and given by Maharaja Bhupindar Singh of Patiala.

In this Line Gurpratap Suraj Granth is a Religious Book. That is How this page is Connected to Religious views of Hitler. Also other lines are all linked to the Sikh Faith and Hitlers Connection. SikkaSingh (talk) 15:48, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Splitting Tulku by ethnicity edit

Might you have any feedback for an editor who created Western tulku? Skyerise (talk) 19:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Skyerise: I noticed; I'll take a short look for now, and a closer look tomorrow. Regards, Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 19:47, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Skyerise (talk) 19:49, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Skyerise: ugh... that's an endless discussion. Draftify would be a reasonable step for now, I think. What is it that irritates you about this page? And what is the real scope of the article? The tulkus, or the assimilation of Tibetan Buddhism in the west? Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 19:59, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
We should not be separating out religious title holders by ethnicity. Western tulkus are recognized by Tibetan lamas. They form a continuation of a Tibetan lineage. Each lineage has a history which now in several cases is currently held by a Westerner. The article seems to be based on the idea that the Western tulkus are cultural appropriators and fringe or illegitimate continuations of their respected lineages. I object to the historical discontinuity that this makes in the history of those lineages. Western tulkus are recognized through the very same formal religious protocols that ethnically Tibetan tulkus are. There are also Chinese tulkus, Nepalese, Bhutanese, etc. but we don't have an article on them either. They are all part of the Tibetan Buddhist religious hierarchy, regardless of their ethnicity. Skyerise (talk) 20:06, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
It is particularly about the phenomena of Westerners being recognized as tulku, and what that encompasses in the context of the globalization of Tibetan Buddhism, which is a topic that has been analyzed in the anthropology of religion for some time now (hence the seperate article.) If you read the page, criticism is properly attributed to particular academics who have written on the topic.
Also understand that the Skyerise has been merging the pages and that Western tulku is entirely original, and it is not split out or forked from Tulku.
Apologies for bringing you into this mess. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IS REAL EMO!(talk or whatever) 20:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Notice of edit warring noticeboard discussion edit

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. Thank you. Whysoanonymous (talk) 08:40, 3 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I looked into how and why you could get involved into Edit warring, which seemed unlikely, and being a retired informaticist, who didn't forget everything, I found that the IP user there, faking signature of Dunny830, also faked link to your talk page as part of his faked signature (see diff and the rest around). That got cross reverted and undone several times, and that's probably why you got notified above.
I suppose that is someone very knowledgeable about WP including arbitration processes, that got banned. He knew how to seem to do 3reverts, but the third was revert of his own previous change so he formally wouldn't be in that violation. (I had seen info about Croatian guy that WFoundation had several years of problems like that, being admin etc. there at the time, so I don't take this easy).
About location from IP-s: see
  • this for 96.246.158.82 (two posts, provider Verizon Business, possibly at job),
  • this for 12.89.215.238 (one post, provider AT&T Services, Inc., possibly mobile while commuting), both New York City, and
  • this for 96.57.24.10 (two posts, possibly residential, because it seems to be a TV cable provider, possibly Gravesend in Brooklyn, NY).

Little guidance edit

Hi josh, you might be busy and i apologise for disturbing you. i am not extremely familiar with all the process in wikipedia and would love guidance from veterans.regarding the topic Purusha sukta where i tagged you for review, one editor reverted the edit, violating the policies, pushing blatant pov and even after explaining everything is not ready to understand.it looks like his agenda is set.i dont want to engage in edit war as that editor has a history of engaging people in edit war and then getting them blocked.i dont know how to tackle this. what steps can i take? is there any step i can take?.i have no idea how to even report this behaviour? .any assistance or advice would be valuable. Vedic literature edit

Hello,

When you edited to Upanishads article to say that the Upanishads are the only widely known literature, what did you mean? The Vedas themselves are well known. Ultraneutral (talk) 03:53, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Upanishads are being read worldwide; the Vedic hymns are not. Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 05:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes they are. I've seen the Vedas at 20 used book stores. Plus, you are engaging in original research. The source doesn't say its the only widely known vedic text. Ultraneutral (talk) 09:51, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Talkpage-subheaders edit

Since a couple of days, the headers at the talkpages appear as Times New Roman, instead of my preferred style (sans serif), and I can't figure out what I've got to change to change this. The subheaders appear in my preferred styleJoshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 16:59, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I seem to hav efixed the problem diff, but a 'check' would still be welcome. And the main header is still quite large. Thanks! Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 17:15, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
