Help with the Hewlett Packard Enterprise article

Hi, Brandon. Thanks again for your help here updating the Acquisitions table. I've given this more thought, and I think there's a much better way to cover acquisitions (and divestitures). Currently, the article mentions some of HPE's acquisitions and divestitures in the 'History' section, then there's a table below. To eliminate redundancy and make the article more complete, I've proposed an 'Acquisitions and divestitures' sub-section for the 'History' section, which includes a simplified table.

If the proposed sub-section text looks good to you, I've noted which (redundant, and sometimes unsourced) claims can be removed from the 'History' section. My goals are to make the article more accurate and complete, and improve flow by grouping all acquisition and divestitures text within a single sub-section, rather than being scattered throughout the page. AMorar HPE, I'm not sure I really like having the table that simple, I think It should at least include the cost of the acquisition. Turning off restorer script on mobile

Hi Brandon. Thanks for writing the restorer script – it's very useful, especially for cleaning up vandalism from multiple editors on the same page. I had the "fat finger" problem where I'd accidentally click the restore link when scrolling through histories on my mobile phone, and RexxS helpfully showed me that I could turn restorer off on mobile devices by installing it on my vector.js instead of common.js. I wanted to suggest maybe adding that info to the script doc page, so other editors (technically clueless like me) will know how to turn it off on mobile if they want to. I didn't want to edit the doc page directly; I figured I'd mention it here instead. Thanks again for the great script! Cheers, Levivich 02:04, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

QuickEdit marking all edits as "minor"

Hello BrandonXLF. First of all, thank you very much for your great set of scripts. They are really helpful.

I wanted to report a tiny problem with the QuickEdit script. I have tested it on multiple projects, and on all of them, it marks all edits as "minor", no matter what option (minor/non-minor) you choose. Can you please look into it? Thank you. Ahmad^talk 20:04, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Brandon!

Could you possibly guide me in the right direction to set up an evel knievel museum article and one for co founder Mike Patterson?

Per your advice - I tried several weeks ago & failed miserably. There are far to many Michael Pattersons. Not sure how to distinguish him. Also, on Lathan the name was red. Which doesnt make sense since an article exists?

Mike patterson has more than plenty of external links, etc.

@Natureofnight: I found a few news sites talking about Michael Patterson using the search https://www.google.com/search?q=Mike+Patterson+%22Evel+Knievel+Museum%22&tbm=nws or https://www.google.com/search?q=Michael+Patterson+%22Evel+Knievel+Museum%22&tbm=nws. It seems like the best way to find him using a query that needs to include Evel Knievel Museum like Mike Patterson "Evel Knievel Museum" or Michael Patterson "Evel Knievel Museum". It seems like Mike Patterson might not be very WP:NOTABLE, if you can't enough about him to make an article, you should consider adding him to a section in the Evel Knievel Museum called "History" or "Founders". As for creating the article Evel Knievel Museum, you should do a search like "Evel Knievel Museum" and read through the WP:RELIABLE sites that come up and start writing the article. At first you don't need sections, but if the lead is becoming too long, you should break the article into sections, remember not the copy and paste copyrighted text (with the exceptions of quotes) because it will become a big legal issue.– BrandonXLF (talk) 19:22, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Some time back, I had begun working on such a script myself -- which I'm happy abandon now in favour of yours. There is just one suggestion I would make - when the "quick edit" button is pressed, presently there's no visual feedback, if the parse API call takes time (eg. for a long section), it can get confusing to the user. To fix this, I'd suggest reducing the opacity of entire section text. This was the (slightly hacky) code I used in my script:

I decided to grey out the "quick edit" button since you shouldn't be able to press it again and I also adding some loading dots at the end it indicate that it is loading. I feel like it's better to grey out the button as that's already where the user is looking. @Leela52452: It works for me on Fennec 68.6.0. Are you visiting a long page such as Toronto? For the button to show, you need to scroll a little down the page. Also, make sure JavaScript is enabled and you are logged in. I've changed the script to use mw.loader.load, so the CSS you added to your global.css shouldn't be needed anymore and it might have fixed your issue.– BrandonXLF (talk) 06:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Layout question

Glitch makes Floating TOC add see-through recent changes on some pages

Hi! With Floating TOC, there is a glitch that causes a floating see-through recent changes pop up on some pages that have a recent changes module loaded, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Socialism. This is not a TOC and is illegible, covering up content.

Note: I am on Firefox, so there is a slight chance this is caused by the browser interpreting the script wrong.

DemonDays64, the issue was caused because Wikipedia:WikiProject Socialism/Recent changes was using the element id toc for the recent changes list which made the script think it was the TOC. – BrandonXLF (talk) 18:33, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Trafalgar Road Connector

Talk:Rock paper scissors

I just discovered the yearly talk page archives you made for this page, and was wondering why you split them into yearly archives. This is a pretty non-standard system and seems to have stopped the normal archive bot operations. Was there a discussion about splitting those in that way? -- Netoholic @ 18:56, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Netoholic, I believe I did it because Talk:Rock paper scissors/Archive older then 2007 was getting very long and it was easier to manually split the page based on date rather than making a new page when a size threshold is met. Please stop manipulating archives. 150k is pretty standard, there's no reason at all to reduce to 75k arbitrarily, especially when sections go missing in the change. Let the bots do the work. Please put in for the speedy deletions, including your Archive 3. --Netoholic @ 23:52, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Netoholic, ok I g7ed the 3rd archive. Having 116 discussions in one archive is a little much, no sections went missing that I'm aware of so I'm not sure what you're talking about. 150k works for standard talk pages, but there's a lot of short discussions on Talk:Rock_paper_scissors. I chose 75k as it's used in the example config at WP:ARCHIVE. – BrandonXLF (talk) 05:43, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

We are likely the only two living editors to look at these archives at all in a long time. Sure, Archive_1 is a lot of small discussions, but chances are no one will need to go back to them for something important. The 75k number mentioned there is for when to archive the live talk page - the actual archive pages can be much longer because they aren't actively edited, and the bot config examples use 150k for the most part. But now we can have an archive search box on the main talk page, and that will be a benefit in locating past discussions. My huge worry was just that I saw in a couple of your edits some text go missing and content end up under the wrong headings. Manually moving sections is always tricky. Hot Default Sort blank at first position issue

QuickEdit and badtoken errors

I was wondering whether you could the ability to do an automated retry on badtoken errors? It occurs on spending too much time in the editbox following which the only way out is to copy the whole section content, reload the page and try again. I have encountered it too many times.

As for the fix, as you must be knowing, just look for the API errorcode badtoken and if it occurs get a new token using action=query&meta=tokens&type=csrftoken and use that to re-send the edit. mw.Api()#edit and mw.Api()#postWithToken() handle this automatically, so you could also consider just switching to that rather than do manual $.posts. Hi, 2 of your scripts are not working named 'Autoref' and 'Citoid'. I've installed them both, but not working. However, I don't use visual editor. Are these scripts for VE? Thank you. Empire AS ^Talk! 07:22, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Empire AS, Citoid is a utility that is used by other scripts, so it should not be installed. Autoref should work fine, just to clarify it changes the way the "Reference" button works and doesn't create its own button. Empire AS, what do you mean to run it throughout the article? If you mean fixing references already in the article you could try WP:CITATIONBOT or you could try User:BrandonXLF/ReferenceExpander if you want to expand references. – BrandonXLF (talk) 08:24, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello Brandon, User:BrandonXLF/ReferenceExpander isn't working for some references. Same as this. I believe this is happening because of this bug. MediaWiki:RefToolbar.js also had this bug. Yes. But there is a new problem. It is turning decoded url into encoded. Because of that some url might not work. For example, see this, after reference expanding the url isn't working. It would be great if the gadget try not to change the url. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 03:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

আফতাবুজ্জামান, the issue is that Citoid is returning a non-normalized URL that when normalized becomes the wrong URL. Enterprisey's parsoid-round-trip uses Parsoid to convert wikitext to HTML and back, and then shows the result and the difference between the original wikitext and the post-conversion wikitext.

Frietjes's infoboxgap assists in renumbering infobox labels/data/classes, so that a new line can be inserted in the middle of the infobox.

GhostInTheMachine's TalkHelper2 is a newer version of their prior script, TalkHelper

GeneralNotability's spihelper updated to 2.2.10, fixing a number of small bugs, automatically tagging globally locked socks as such in the sockpuppet template, and restoring open cases following an SPI history merge.

Enterprisey's script-installer gadget has been updated with more internationalization of messages, as well as addition of a user preference, window.scriptInstallerInstallTarget to allow controlling where new scripts are to be installed.

Open tasks

• Enterprisey is looking for beta testers for their new section-watchlist user script. See the announcement.

Miscellaneous

• The second edition of the m:Coolest Tool Award will be taking place in December.
• Enterprisey's links-in-logs script has now been implemented as part of MediaWiki core, see gerrit:640761 and phab:T207562.

Enterprisey's script-installer, a gadget that makes it easier to install scripts, is this month's featured script

Enterprisey's copy-section-link adds popups to section headers which has an appropriate wikilink and external link to the section.

DannyS712's FindBlacklistEntry can be used to figure out which line(s) in either the local or global spamblacklist prevent a particular url from being added.

Nardog's CodeEditorAssist allows customizing the code editor, including changing the color theme and enabling live autocompletion.

Cobaltcigs's IllWill allows searches wikidata.org for foreign-language sitelinks, to populate {{ill}} and replace plain red links.

Twinkle has made a number of improvements, most notably full support for expiring watchlist items.

Evad37's Signpost Publishing Script is now at version 2.4.2, with changes including a fix for calculating the size of pages with files.

Evad37's MoveToDraft is now at version 2.5.1, with changes including:

• checks for move conflicts and better options if move fails
• the addition of {{Drafts moved from mainspace}} after moves
• updating the default move log and notification texts to be more in line with WP:DRAFTIFY

Enterprisey's cv-revdel now handles failures more cleanly, including reporting failures caused by the spam blacklist.

Bradv's Notepad.js script has been updated with new styles and a new launch button.

A beta version of XFDcloser is available for testing, and brings a new user interface for dialogs and some preferences for customization.

Open tasks

• Voting in the m:Community Wishlist Survey 2021 is ongoing until December 21, 2020. There are 15 proposals in the "bots and gadgets" category that may be of interest.

Miscellaneous

• The Watchlist Expiry feature worked on by the Community Tech team has been enabled on Wikipedia. For scripts that include watching or unwatching pages, developers may want to update their code to take advantage of the new functionality. See the documentation on mediawiki.org.
• As noted in the prior issue, Enterprisey's links-in-logs script has now been implemented as part of MediaWiki core. By my count, this is his third script that was replaced by implementing the code in MediaWiki core or an extension, along with link-section-edits and abusefilter-hide-search. Additionally, his reply-link script is being converted in part to mw:Extension:DiscussionTools. Are there any other scripts that might be worth integrating directly in MediaWiki? Thoughts would be welcome at Wikipedia talk:Scripts++.
