December music edit

December: story · music · places

Today's story is about Maria Callas, on her centenary. - Aaron Copland died OTD, and Jerome Kohl (mentioned in November) said something wise on Copland's talk, - yes, regarding a soft(er) stance towards infoboxes. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:49, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

A new church year began (listen), - a new era? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:00, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Today's story is about parts of my life. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:24, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Today, I managed to get the pics to snow (on 28 Nov), and heard a lovely concert, after listening to a miracle of meditative dreaming on 6 December (or just click on music). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:02, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

... and today, to Paris (29 Nov) with a visit to the Palais Garnier, - to match the story of Medea Amiranashvili, - don't miss listening to her expressive voice. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:03, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Gerda: You messages always make for pleasant reading. As I think you noticed, I've been contributing to music too with an article on Helena Jungwirth. As she was based in Munich, you might have something to add.--Ipigott (talk) 16:37, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, - I'll check her article, travelling, had no time yet. My story today is about Michael Robinson, - it's an honour to have known him. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:07, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Today's story is based on a DYK of five years ago, speaking of the first world premiere in Germany of a full-length opera by an American woman composer ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:38, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
New pic, cake (home-baked but not by me) before a dream of a concert - today's story about the woman who directed today's Aida, with a trailer of her work --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:54, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for what you do and stand for! I wish you a good festive season and a peaceful New Year! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:02, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
And thank you for all the useful assistance you give me and many others. Christmas is a very special time for music. Enjoy it with your family and friends.--Ipigott (talk) 06:13, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, and same to you, - family already arrived, with a list of songs to learn! - For Christmas Eve, we'll sing my user's infobox: "singen, singen", by Schütz. - Today, I have a special story to tell, of the works of a musician born 300 years ago, some heard on a hot summer night ending in torrential rain ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:34, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Christmas music pictured - actually rehearsing the piece mentioned --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:38, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
  • If you are interested and have the time, Gerda, you might like to take a look at Lilly Hafgren, a Swedish opera singer who appears to have been quite successful in her day. Surprisingly, despite her engagements in Germany and several appearances in Bayreuth, I have not been able to find anything about her in the Sängerlexikon and using the Wikipedia library, I was only able to access part of her Grove biography. Perhaps you can do better.--Ipigott (talk) 14:29, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Sorry, just found her in the Sängerlexikon here.--Ipigott (talk) 14:33, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
I didn't have the time, - happy you found something! Bayreuth usually have the GSL entry (+ the roles with the links to the productions) for their singers, but I don't find her. - I try to finish uploading images of 2023 before it ends, and reached 17 December. Happy to see Rebekka Habermas on the Main page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:45, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Ann Robertson edit

Hello again User: Ipigott! (Have I pinged correctly? ) I am wondering if the page on Ann Robertson (Pilgrims hospice founder) is good enough to be a stub? It is very short but having stumbled across her recent obituary, it seems as if she has made a real difference to her community. Any thoughts welcome! Balance person (talk) 17:34, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Balance person: You don't need to ping me when you write on my talk page but what you did was fine. I¨ll look at the article tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 18:33, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, no hurry from my side......forgot to say that it was because of the 'Women who died in 2023' idea that I stumbled upon her.Balance person (talk) 21:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Balance person: Thank you for Ann Robertson (nurse). It's now in mainspace.--Ipigott (talk) 07:59, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I wasn't sure about this one! Balance person (talk) 09:34, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Julie Condra edit

  • Ipigott and Nyraxis, I've gone through all the sources I can find, and this actress seems a very minor actor, and likely to be deleted. It's not the fault of either of you. Julie Condra's body of work has no real substance. Her most notable role, Santa Barbara (TV series) as Emily DiNapoli Hughes, is so light-weight, that I can't find anything of substance to use here. There are a lot of actors who spend their entire careers appearing in bit-part roles, and none of them are likely to have a Wikipedia article. Sorry to tell you this, but that's why this is likely to be deleted. — Maile (talk) 03:22, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Maile66, but I thought that as it came from a new member of Women in Red, it should be given some attention.--Ipigott (talk) 07:23, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Arne Jacobsen edit

Given your 2011 comment on Mr Jacobsen's Talkpage, I thought you might be interested in this, St Catherine's College Bicycle Store. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 11:56, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Perhaps you should link that talk page. 2011 was a long time ago, and I am not sure what you are trying to tell me. — Maile (talk) 13:28, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Maile66 - ???! - why would I post a message for you on User:Ipigott's Talkpage? KJP1 (talk) 14:23, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
KJP1 I blame my error on not enough morning coffee before posting. But, yeah, you are correct, in that I was somehow thinking this had to do with the section above this one. — Maile (talk) 22:07, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
KJP1: I think the message was for me. I can see the bicycle store article has improved but the running text is still only 387 words. The reason tools like Ores and Rater give it such a high rating is because of the extensive notes and references. I've been kind and given it C class. Keep up the good work!--Ipigott (talk) 14:00, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
It was indeed, and here's the link, Talk:Arne Jacobsen#Coverage of Arne Jacobsen. The problem - which I have also tried to address on the Denmark Project - is that the poor little bike shed doesn't get much individual coverage. St Catherine's College, yes, but even the substantive part of the HE entry specifically on the shed is a grand total of 19 words! As to the C - hmmm. I think I might try it for GA! All the best. KJP1 (talk) 14:12, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
KJP1: As you have demonstrated, a bicycle shed can be an important component of the whole story. You might be interested to hear that back in 1961 my father, a successful metallurgist, wanted me to study electrical engineering at St Catherine's College and arranged an interview. After being separated from my family for eight years at boarding schools, I was not too keen to repeat the experience in Cambridge and explained my position. I ended up studying in Newcastle (then Durham) where I was able to live with an aunt. Small world.--Ipigott (talk) 14:25, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
A small world indeed - Durham was also my alma mater, although only after I'd been rejected by... somewhere I can't remember the name of now, got some dreamy spires, ho hum. KJP1 (talk) 14:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Enough said on this. I don't want to encourage anyone keen on writing my biography. I enjoy remaining in the background. Please consider it all "off the record" as I became used to saying as a European Commission official.--Ipigott (talk) 14:40, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Editor experience invitation edit

Hi Ipigott :) I'm looking to interview people here. Feel free to pass if you're not interested. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:41, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, Clovermoss, for embarking on this interesting initiative. After I came across Rosiestep's response yesterday, I looked through quite a few of these. I'm not sure how many editors you intend to invite but like Rosiestep it seems to me it would be useful to undertake some kind of basic statistical analysis, maybe ordered by starting date. From "Did you have help", yes/no responses could be listed and maybe some general tendencies will emerge from the earlier questions.--Ipigott (talk) 07:27, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi Ian: For clarification, I was just curious if Clovermoss had plans to do something with the survey info, but did not mean to imply that anything should be done with it. --Rosiestep (talk) 09:11, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for any misunderstanding, Rosie, but it was your question that triggered my interest. I certainly think it would be useful to do something with all these responses. But there's certainly no rush and we should see whether any other ideas evolve. For the time being, every day we have a few more to read through.--Ipigott (talk) 09:24, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
I can understand why someone might be interested in analyzing this, but I kept my questions fairly open-ended because I felt like there was so much more to learn from the Wikipedia community that wouldn't be easy to put on a graph. There's a difference between "No I didn't have help but I would've wanted some" and "Yes I had help but it was bitey" and "No I didn't have help but I prefer to figure things out on my own". I really think the strength of the subpage is showing the varied perspectives of Wikipedians in a way you don't nessecarily get in isolation or with clearly defined boundaries? That's why I have been trying to gather as many Wikipedians as possible to reflect on their experiences. :) Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 12:57, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
I certainly think the whole thing is a great idea, Clovermoss. Don't bother too much about my suggestions. Let's just see how it all evolves. It might be useful to provide a link to this from our user pages or perhaps just draw on some of the more interesting details. It was interesting to see you were just 16 when you started to edit. I've come across quite a few Wikipedians who started in their teens, some of whom have been among our most active contributors. When I was that age, encyclopedias were consulted in the library. Just shows how times have changed.--Ipigott (talk) 14:23, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Michael Moffett (20:04, 5 December 2023) edit

Greetings: This is the small edit which I sought to add to my profile:

Moffett served a House term from 2017-18 and was assigned to the Education Committee. After narrowly losing a reelection bid in 2018, he returned to the House after the 2020 election, when he won handily in Merrimack County District 9 (Canterbury and Loudon, now District 4). In 2021 he was assigned as vice-chair for the House Committee on State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs. After winning reelection in 2022 he was named as Committee Chair. --Michael Moffett (talk) 20:04, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Hi there, Michael Moffett, and welcome to Wikipedia. You should not use your user page to present your own successes or your own biography. The text above is very similar to this. Instead you can explain your general interests and how you hope to contribute to Wikipedia. In the welcome message on your talk page, I have left links to guidance on how to edit on Wikipedia. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:22, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Happy Holidays edit

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. The editor retention project was created back in July of 2012 is still considered active. The lights are on and the rent is paid for the foreseeable future. Gertrude Battles Lane edit

Added an article that I had been working on for a little while to mainspace. Can you give Gertrude Battles Lane a onceover if you have time? Abzeronow (talk) 20:32, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, Abzeronow, for this detailed biography. You'll see I've made quite a few minor copy edits, mainly on punctuation in connection with references (it comes before the ref), newspaper and magazine titles (italics) and capitals in headings. I also added Authority control, defaultsort and a few categories. On the ariticle's talk page, I've given it a C rating and linked it to #1day1women (where it is now listed). Keep up the good work and let me know if ever you need further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:52, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the copy edits. I do have a planned article that I'll probably finish in the spring on Mary Fides Shepperson (pictured at c:File:Sister Mary Fides Shepperson, Ph. D.jpg) who was the first woman to graduate from Duquesne University and a woman who received a Ph. D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh, and who was a professor at Mount Mercy College which is now called Carlow University. But that's something I'll start after the new year. Victoria Howard edit

Hello again. I have drafted a page on Victoria Howard and Yuchitown has been kind enough to check it for me for tone as my knowledge of Indigenous people in the Americas is poor. Although Yuchitown and ARoseWolf both wonder if VH is notable enough to be included, I wonder what you think too? Her work has been studied so many times apparently that it seems only right that she has a page when she is the one being studied! Any thoughts welcome. Balance person (talk) 18:42, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, Balance person, for another interesting biography. It's now in mainspace as Victoria Howard. Yuchitown and ARoseWolf might be able to add more categories and include the name in pertinent articles and lists. I must say I was surprised not to be able to find any other biographies of Native American storytellers of the period.--Ipigott (talk) 07:38, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks as ever for tidying things up and for the support. It is very nice to see VH there! Balance person (talk) 09:05, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Inertbasy (18:04, 16 December 2023) edit

hello do you know how i could make an article of something? --Inertbasy (talk) 18:04, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

-iana/ana edit

I am baffled and cannot figure out how to translate this book title Infantería. It refers to the works of Guillermo Cabrera Infante, which if he were John Milton would be Miltoniana. Our article -ana isn't helpful because it doesn't really explain if there are rules about applying -iana vs. -ana and I note that Canadiana, loses the final a of the root while other words don't. I am totally guessing that it would be Infanteana, but I have no clue. Maybe there is a better way to translate it, but I am 99.9% positive that we would not translate it as Infantry? Can you help? SusunW (talk) 21:51, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

SusunW: I don't think there are any firm rules about this. Infanteana looks OK to me. Of course in Spanish, Infantería is a kind of pun as it also means infantry (covering all the components of his works). Perhaps the best solution would be to use the original Spanish title without a translation. There are a number of English words which end in -eria: pizzeria, bacteria, criteria, etc., so it might not sound so unusual.--Ipigott (talk) 07:03, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much. Maybe I'll finally finish Edith today. Been a long haul. Very complex story. I cannot figure out if she was the villain or the victim, maybe a little of both. Definitely need other eyes on her to make sure it's balanced and that there is enough context to make what happened understandable. I'll let you know. SusunW (talk) 13:22, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay well it took me longer than I thought, but I think I am done with Edith García Buchaca. Very difficult to write, all criticism to improve it welcome. SusunW (talk) 17:49, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Don't want to bug you, I realize that it's really close to Christmas and you probably are busy, but I'm not sure if you saw my request to look at García, because you usually respond. No worries if you are too busy or don't want to do it, just let me know. SusunW (talk) 14:54, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I missed your second mention of her. Still plenty of time between now and Christmas. I'll have time to look at it tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 14:59, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
I've now had time to go through it. I must say I found it pretty heavy going with all those political details. I had difficulty with a rather long rambling sentence towards the end of the Exile section. I tried to cut it up into shorter sentences but you should check whether I correctly understood what you wanted to say. I was also a bit confused about all those mentions of Rodríguez. In some cases the name refers to her husband Carlos Rafael Rodríguez and in others to Marcos Rodríguez Alfonso. In this connection, I was rather surprised at the passage from El País which says "she was punished because her husband was sanctioned". Was her husband sanctioned? As far as I can see, he was in good standing with Fidel Castro right up to his death.--Ipigott (talk) 11:22, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Ipigott In the section about the trial, I called Marcos Rodríguez Alfonso "Rodríguez" and her ex-husband Carlos Rafael Rodrîguez. Everywhere else in the article "Rodríguez" is her ex-husband. But maybe I just need to spell out his name throughout. I thought the political details were important. I think most people think Castro was always a communist, but he wasn't. His political evolution shaped why he targeted the pre-Revolutionary communists. He led militants, they weren't a political party. He needed a party that was organized and willing to allow him to run it, especially after the Bay of Pigs invasion attempt. The communists had never had much power and they were organized, so it seemed like it would be a good match for both, but in the end, Castro thought the pre-Revolutionary communists were too close to the Soviets after the Missile Crisis and not radical enough. Ordoqui, her husband, was the one accused of working with the CIA, she wasn't. She was arrested because he was arrested, lost her job because of the accusation against him, and lived under house arrest because of him. I really appreciate your help. Will read through it again to make sure that it is clearer. SusunW (talk) 13:34, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
My mistake. I was confusing her two husbands. Her problems as you say were as result of Ordoqui. Thanks for pointing this out.--Ipigott (talk) 13:58, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
It occurred to me that the confusion in the trial section could be resolved by calling Marcos Rodríguez Alfonso "Marquito" throughout, so I've made that correction. To me, it does seem less confusing by making that change. SusunW (talk) 14:38, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Good idea. There are multiple sources indicating that Batista left Cuba for the Dominican Republic in the early hours of 1 January. I don't think you can say he left at the end of 1958 even if your source indicates this. Plenty of sources to draw on here.--Ipigott (talk) 16:58, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
  • There's one more thing that bothers me a bit. At the end of the first paragraph on Cultural affairs we are told "The cultural sector was seen as non-vital". Did this continue to be the case? If not, it would be interesting to know when things changed as we later learn that García played a key role in the sector and was one of the top players in the country's leadership.--Ipigott (talk) 17:13, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'll review Batista's exit. I think when it became more important is an unknowable - mainly because the myth was perpetrated that most of the organizations in Cuba were created at the instigation of Castro. Perhaps the truth not just of the cultural section, but other sectors, is that other people were more strongly involved than has been acknowledged? One of the reasons this was so hard to write was I kept trying to untangle why. Why is it impossible to confirm where she was born and her family background, why did she fall from grace, why are so many sources so negative about her role, why are there so many contradictions. I think that until someone actually studies her life truly neutrally, and records about her stop being hidden, there will be many questions. From reading all of the sources I could find, she seems to have been given a free hand on all cultural aspects until her arrest, but that could simply be the attempt to blame her rather than the other actors, i.e. Castro, Antuña, Carpentier, Alfredo Guevara, et al. who played a part in both the development of cultural infrastructure and the censorship that happened. For example, I was baffled by how she was seen as instigating the whole film brouhaha, because it was Franqui who turned it down first, Alfredo Guevara who refused to give it sanction, and Castro who ordered the debates. Her role was apparently merely to advise people to attend the debates and serve as moderator, but was is more? Or was it just twisted? Insanely hard to figure out when all the sources were written with "an agenda". Nonetheless, it seemed to me that someone who created the institutions that supported artistic development and preservation in the country was an extremely important figure and despite the unknowables, should have an article. SusunW (talk) 18:02, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Heck, even when Batista left is unclear. Some sources say in the night on 31 December 1958 and others say in the early morning of 1 January 1959. I just made it a note and said he left at New Years. SusunW (talk) 18:59, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Thanks for all your explanations. I certainly agree she was important enough to have an article and you've done a great job with it. The significance of her role in cultural work evolves in the article, whatever the formal responsibilities of all those involved. As for Batista's leaving, New Years is certainly better than December 1958. Many of us have seen documentaries about the events. It's always a pleasure to collaborate with you on such revealing work. Quite an education for me.--Ipigott (talk) 07:08, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
I truly, truly appreciate your help with it. Maybe some of the answers lie in Cienfuegos. Honestly, it makes me want to go there and try to figure it out. I can on my Mexican permanente and have always wanted to. LOL It is much better and clearer because of our collaboration and I very much enjoy working with you. Looking forward to a new year of discoveries. SusunW (talk) 16:11, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Then treat yourself to a trip to Cienfuegos. Looks like a really interesting place to visit and it can't be all that far away for you. While you're there, you could always pop into the Biblioteca Provincial “Roberto García Valdés” and see what you can find there.--Ipigott (talk) 16:38, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Ada Cole edit

Hello! I have drafted a page on Ada Cole here Ada Cole. I wonder if, when you have time, you could take a look at it? I was adding her into a few other pages yesterday so that she would not be an orphan if she became a page. And someone then helpfully redirected her to the organisation she founded. I don't know what, if anything, would need to be done about that redirect if she moves to main space. But I expect you will know! I will just see if I can do any categories next. Grateful, as ever, for any thoughts you might have Balance person (talk) 16:25, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, Balance person. Interesting article. It's now ready for mainspace but I can't move it myself as there was already a redirect from Ada Cole. I've asked for assistance and it should be moved soon. I think you should look at my edits on the article, particularly those in connection with wikilinks. I don't know why you frequently include punctuation in the links such as nun,. This should simply be nun,. You should also avoid the curly apostrophe and just use '. Glad to see you included some categories. I'll activate them once the article's been moved. And while I'm here, all the best for Christmas and the New Year.--Ipigott (talk) 13:41, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Balance person: You'll see it's now been moved. Please let me know when you would like me to look at your next creation.--Ipigott (talk) 13:53, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks very much indeed for tidying it up and moving it. Great! I use visual editor and am not aware of ever using curly brackets or putting a vertical line in the links to other pages. I will have to have a think about what I actually do and what is causing the problem. I suppose that all the places where I popped Ada Cole in on other pages will now turn blue automatically. One not mentioned in the 'What links with...' list is World Horse Welfare but I have turned her name blue there myself. All the best to you too for the season and thanks so much for all your help. It makes me feel as if I have a safety net! Balance person (talk) 15:51, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
By the way, a little piece of text that I put into the page on Horse Slaughter, about concerns over long distance transport, has been taken out (reverted?). Is it worth my having a conversation with the remover over this do you think or is that the same as the editor warring that I read about when I hang around the Tea house to pick up tips? I certainly don't want any disharmony at all but it seems a slightly odd removal. If you are busy, please just ignore this minor question. I can just leave it. Merry Christmas! edit

Dear Ipigott: thank you for welcoming me to WiR this year. I am more than happy to work for such a great cause, and I hope to produce some more quality biographies in the future. I understand that church history is traditionally male-dominated, so I'm just finding my way to balance the grand scale of Wikipedia.

Attached is a little excerpt of the Xi'an Stele that is probably the earliest documentation of the Incarnation in the Chinese language. Merry Christmas and happy new year! Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 17:59, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Re: Talk:Margaretta (given name) edit

Please note that Margaretta (given name) is a list-class page, not a disambiguation-class page. BD2412 T 13:48, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Yes, list is better, BD2412. My mistake. I see that pages on given names are indeed generally classed list. There have been lengthy discussions about disambiguation and Wikipedia:Set index articles at Wikipedia_talk:Content_assessment#Pages_rated_as_Disambig-class_which_are_not_disambiguation_pages. In many cases it is difficult to decide which is which. There are no doubt hundreds of disamb pages which should be reclassed as list. Sometimes it is difficult to make the distinction. Seasons greetings!--Ipigott (talk) 14:40, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Gessica Généus edit

Good Morning! I wonder if you could take a look some time at GG who has a page in the French Wikipedia that I have borrowed from and see what you think? She should be here Gessica Généus if I have done that correctly! I tried to find English language refs as far as possible. No hurry at all. Thanks if you can. She has been very prolific despite extremely difficult circumstances. Balance person (talk) 10:24, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Balance person: Well picked! She certainly deserves an article. I've tidied it up a bit and moved it to mainspace. Also wikilinked from her films, with redirects on Jessica, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 12:52, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Candelaria Rodríguez edit

I am a bit confused about this article's use of the phrase "sobre la desaparecida jurista cubana". I have only ever seen that used if someone is an actual disappeared person. I'm guessing she is dead? I'd be interested on your take on that phrase. I have asked George to help with photos. If you have time or interest, could you give her a copyedit? Thanks. SusunW (talk) 17:54, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

For a start, it simply means "...the late Cuban jurist". Desaparecido is often used in this connection.--Ipigott (talk) 06:45, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Yay, thank you. So I was right that she is likely dead. Never seen it in that context, so I am glad I asked. I appreciate your help very much. SusunW (talk) 14:10, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, definitely dead.--Ipigott (talk) 14:13, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
  • SusunW: I've been through it twice. Hope it now reads a bit better. These Cuban biographies are not easy to work on. Are you planning more in your "chain" developments?--Ipigott (talk) 15:41, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I think I will just put a died after 1998 to make it clear that she is dead. And yes, they aren't easy. Lots of gaps, but the digital collection in Florida was a huge help with this one. I think I am going to head to Africa and see where that leads me. SusunW (talk) 15:51, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
A daisy chain, looping back to an anchor article would be easier, but I am shooting for a straight line chain from one woman to another. Challenging! SusunW (talk) 16:04, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Hi there, Flagsource129, and welcome to Wikipedia. In the welcome message on your talk page, you will find links to sites where you will find guidance on how to edit. As for adding additional flags to Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, you will need to explain the background by inserting appropriate text with a reliable source. WiR invitation template edit

Hello and happy new year! I hope the holidays treated you well. I am wondering if I can trouble you to remind me where I can find the template that invites new editors to join WiR? In the course of AfC reviewing, I ran across someone who is doing great work and might appreciate WiR support for it. Sorry to trouble you, I couldn’t readily put my hands on it on the project page! Innisfree987 (talk) 01:56, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi there, Innisfree987, and all the best to you and yours for 2024. The invitation to join is Template:WikiProject Women in Red invite. I've just updated it in connection with our new WIR icons. I have never actually used it myself as I prefer to personalize my contacts with potential participants but for those who are short of time, it's no doubt very useful. In any case, I'm really glad to see you are interested in attracting new members. We could certainly do with stronger participation. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 10:13, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks so much! Yes I will add a personal note but I appreciate having the template as a jumping off point. I might suggest some minor edits to it but I will do that on the template talk page, with a note on the main WiR talk page. Thank you again. Looks great with the current icon! Pinky Winters edit

Hello Ipigott and a Happy New Year. I find that there were a lot of outstanding singers in the jazz years and the American Songbook era and who are not on Wikipedia. It is hard to find sources though. Their accompanists and band leaders are often in but the singers were not covered much. Anyway, I wonder if you might take a look to see if I have done enough? Thanks if you can and no hurry from my side. Balance person (talk) 20:53, 4 January 2024 (UTC) Pinky Winters

Balance person: I'm afraid it's been deleted. Strange that you were not informed about it.--Ipigott (talk) 11:47, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Are you sure? Something funny happened when I tried to make it go blue when I left my message on your talk page here last night. But I can still see it myself at draft stage in my pages at User:Balance person/Pinky Winters and available via my contributions pages at the very least. As it is in draft stage, it would not have been deleted yet, would it? I thought that only happened with pages in main space? I had not moved it yet...was just waiting to see what you thought? Let me know if you can find it. I can see it. Balance person (talk) 12:25, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: I've found it at User:Balance person/ Pinky Winters. The problem was the space after the slash. I'll look more carefully at it later.--Ipigott (talk) 12:33, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: You'll see I needed to work on it quite a bit before moving it to mainspace. I can't understand why you are still having those strange problems with wikilinks and curly apostraphes. No one else seems to have these problems. Let me know when your next biography is ready for checking. You always seem to find people who really deserve to be covered.--Ipigott (talk) 14:56, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for all you have done. I have gone through the entire history of the page to learn what it is that I did wrong or did not do at all. I understand all of it, I think. But I still have no idea what you mean by my having a problem with curly brackets or curly apostrophes (What are curly apostrophes? I only have one non curly kind on my keyboard?) . Also what problem do I have with wikilinks?
Before I send a page to you for checking, I go round other pages of the encyclopedia to pop 'my' person's name in where appropriate so that the person should not be an orphan once moved to main space. Is that the problem? Should I wait until the person IS in main space and then de-orphanise them? I would like to learn what it is that I do that causes you more work! And sorry that I have! Joey Wat edit

Hi Ipigott. My name is Corey and I work for Joey Wat, the CEO of Yum China, a restaurant conglomerate in China which operates major brands like KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. I noticed your interest in female business leaders as a member of the Women in Business WikiProject, so I thought I would reach out. The current page about Joey is only a few paragraphs long, and a dedicated section on awards seems promotional. Following WP:COI, I have shared a proposed expanded version for impartial editors to consider that would expand the page. Sincerely appreciated if you can take the time to give the expanded draft an impartial lookover and provide any feedback. Coreyhcooper (talk) 02:01, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Request revisit classification edit

Dear Ipigott,

Hope all is well and still the best for the new year.

I would like to ask your help in the following. Since your review of the article about Anne-Lot Hoek (my partner) I made many additions/changes. Particularly as one of the Wikipedia revisers/trainers Fulbert put back the challenge of notability, I have added many opinions by notable people about her work to give a clearer view, after which he stated she is notable indeed. I hope you are willing to revisit her article as I sincerely believe the classification could better reflect her expertise in her field. I hope you agree based on the latest and greatest.

When you have questions, please let me know!

Kind regards. Ewout12345 (talk) 21:39, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Ewout12345: Yes, there have certainly been significant improvements and I've now given it a B rating. For such a long, detailed article the lead is far too short. I see there are still paragraphs with important details which remain unrefererenced. Please make sure these are properly sourced. You'll see I've added a few pertinent categories. The article still needs a copy edit. I may be able to find time to look through it more carefully. Happy editing.--Ipigott (talk) 07:15, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the effort! I didn’t know about the length of the lead, will look into it. Also I will look into the unreferenced details, if there is anything that could make the difference to get it to an A, please let me know and I will see if there is proof to that claim. Thanks again for your help and your work to advance women and enhance Wikipedia. Ewout12345 (talk) 10:53, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Ewout12345: If you are looking for a higher assessment, you will first need to nominate the article for a GA review (see Wikipedia:Good article nominations). Before you do so, you should transform the bullet-point listings into running text and generally improve the quality of the presentation. At the moment, I am doing some copy editing which should be a help in this connection. I would also strongly advise you to include a new section on critical assessment including independent third party reviews of Hoek's work. It would also be useful to expand on Hoek's early life with details of family, school performance, etc. More illustrations would also help.--Ipigott (talk) 11:09, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Another problem with the article at present is that much of the content is sourced on the basis of Hoek's own writings. These are considered as primary sources and should be used very sparingly. You should replace them with independent sources such as those from recognized critics, reviewers or other experts who have commented on her work. If the article is reviewed for GA, it is probable that much of the information directly sourced from her own writings will be removed. In any case, if you cannot find reliable independent sources, I would suggest you remove items directly sourced from Hoek's writings yourself. You might find it useful to read the section on "Sourcing" in the WIR Primer.--Ipigott (talk) 14:17, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Dear Ipigott,
I have one more request if I may. Could you please also revisit the WikiProject Women writers importance? If you look at the description versus the enriched article do you agree that should be altered as well?
Kind regards,
Ewout Ewout12345 (talk) 14:34, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I am surprised, Ewout12345, that instead of trying to improve the article on the basis of my suggestions, you seem more interested in improving its assessment. In my opinion, Hoek's achievements are far too recent for her to receive a higher importance rating, either as a historian or a writer. It will be interesting to see if her next book on Namibia is received with similar interest. In any case, the article first needs to be restructured to give more emphasis to her work in Indonesia with, as I suggested above, a section on critical assessment and probably also one on her awards (which are currently lost in the section on Literature). It would also help if you could encourage independent editors to work on improving the article. It's really not very satisfactory to see that the only person who has really been developing Hoek's biography in Dutch and English is her partner (either as a registered Wikipedian or an IP). Maybe you could ask for assistance from WP:WikiProject Women in Green where others may be willing to help finding reliable independent sources and ensuring the biography is no longer based on personal research. Maybe active editors from WP:Netherlands such as Editør or Ruud Buitelaar could also take a look.--Ipigott (talk) 15:19, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Dear Ipigott, please don’t get me wrong. I am happy with your suggestions and I would make work of it as stated. I just thought when I requested to revisit her rating I thought you would actually look at the importance rating and just saw it was unchanged. I do care about that as I care about her work and reputation in a working environment almost completely dominated by men she managed to surface and it can never harm to get some support. I thought after the revisions -and even before- it would be plain to see that “Subject is not particularly notable or significant even within its field of study. It may only be included to cover a specific part of a notable article.” does not fit het work and accomplishments over the past decade where she put the subject of the Indonesian war of Independence back on the map with groundbreaking research and publications in the Netherlands since 2012, and particularly in of the most reputable newspapers in the Netherlands; NRC Handelsblad. I think that is not just recently with her book and promotion that costed seven years to accomplish. Please help
me understand why if she has low importance was she asked for her views over a longer stretch of time on the most reputable Dutch national television programs like Nieuwsuur and Buitenhof when significant events related to Indonesian history occurred? Why was she taking part in the second largest government financed history project since the Second World War and involved in all major exhibitions on Indonesian history, received a prize by the University of Amsterdam for her contributions to that debate (over a longer period of time), got multiple scholarships at reputable institutions, and endorsements by the likes of David van Reybrouck, Reggie Baay, Roxane van Iperen on her book cover and would someone like Adriaan van Dis, who won a wide range of prizes and is known for his affinity with the subject, state in his lecture he learned most from her book, more than from all the scientific books of the national research project he read or any other author on the topic of Indonesia? I hope I do not offend anyone, I am just trying to understand why e.g. the description of Mid “ Subject is only notable within its particular field or subject and has achieved notability in a particular place or area.” or high “Subject is extremely notable, but has not achieved international notability, or is only notable within a particular continent.” would not a better fit despite the fact that her works is valued, written about and translated in Indonesian as well?

Having said that I will work on changes as suggested though many primary sources help to properly tell her story. In the other areas I see more room for improvement. Thanks again for your patience and help to build my understanding on what is valued and what is not on Wikipedia.

Kind regards. Ewout12345 (talk) 17:21, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Ipigott, @Ewout12345, thanks for asking me to join your discussion. Please allow me to share a first look. Wikipedia:Conflict of interest states literally that a biography should not be written by the subject´s spouse. I think @Ewout12345, being Ms. Hoek´s partner, should not push it. Regarding the importance scale of the project Wikipedia:WikiProject Women writers, the guidelines clearly state that it is about the importance as a women writer or for women´s literature. The alleged importance of Hoek´s work for the history of Bali and similar arguments are completely beside the point and irrelevant for the importance scale of the project. Hope this helps. Warm regards! Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 18:26, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. She is not a literature but a non-fiction writer indeed, however then I don’t understand why she received the rating initially? I will not push it, had already started with making the new changes Ipigott suggested and earlier the ones that Wikipedia trainer Fulbert suggested to me. I was hoping that as he also became convinced she is notable her importance rating would likely change after the thorough revision. I will make some more suggested improvements like the photos that I think others will not have and more secondary sources that I will be able to easier find to save others their time if that makes sense. Kind regards and a nice evening. Ewout12345 (talk) 19:45, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
The article on Anne-Lot Hoek falls within the scope of wpww. That is why. The article falls also within the scope of WP History and therefore I added it. The importance is rated low by default. It is for the projects to judge if the rating should be changed. We all understand that your partner is very important to you and that speaks highly of you. Let others judge how important the article is for Wikipedia and for the projects about women´s literature or history. Kind regards, Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 01:11, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
  • I would just like to point out here, Ewout12345, that the importance rating of an article in relation to a given sphere of interest is independent of the quality of the article. Short stubs frequently receive a rating of high importance if they address a topic seen to be of significance while many FA articles have an importance rating of low in all the relevant wikiprojects. Now that WP History has been added, there might be a case for assigning a higher importance rating to that project but I am not sufficiently conversant with Dutch history to judge the importance myself. Thank you for making improvements to the article and adding illustrations. Unfortunately you cannot use Hoek's personal website as a citation. Even using her site for publications is not really acceptable but I have left it for the moment. Instead you should find an independent site which lists or discusses her papers. I was unable to find anything at KB.--Ipigott (talk) 07:02, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Kenyan essay (19:20, 9 January 2024) edit

hello.what is actually meant by editing wikipedia? --Kenyan essay (talk) 19:20, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi there, Kenyan essay, and welcome to Wikipedia. Editing in connection with Wikipedia simply means writing, either creating new pages or modifying old ones. What you have just written in your message above is in fact your first edit. If you follow some of the links in the welcome message on your talk page, you will learn more about editing. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 19:45, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Marie Mørk edit

Thank you for creating Marie Mørk. I have a couple of comments but will not make any changes myself since I have a personal connection.

  • Her father's last name (and thus her own birth name) was Mørch and not Mørk. I am not sure when and why she changed the spelling but I believe it was to go with the more "Danish" and straightforward spelling.
  • When her sister Julie Johanne Feilberg (née Mørch) and her husband Ditlev Feilberg emigrated to Canada in 1910, Marie Mørk adopted two of their eight children prior to their departure (Source). Another sister, Eva, was also involved in the school (same source). I don't know if it is worth mentioning these small details.

As for Julie Marie Feilberg, a selection of her letters was later published by her father-in-law Henning Frederik Feilberg (with all names changed), first as Hjemmeliv på Prærien (Gtldendal 1917) and later in an extended edition as De Derovre. Knut Hamsun wrote an enthusiastic review (Source, The book has been translated into English as A Christmas Letter from Nokomis (1976] and later as Letters from Nokomis : life on a homestead in Saskatchewan. See also this article). The sources are hardly sufficient to warrant a biography but perhaps it is worth mentioning in the Henning Frederik Feilberg article. Due to the family connection, I will again leave it to you to decide if it is relevant to cover it somewwhere.Ramblersen2 (talk) 20:40, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Ramblersen2: Thanks for these details. I have not finished working on the article but have already mentioned her name at birth. I'll try to incorporate the details you mention.--Ipigott (talk) 06:32, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Ramblersen2: I've more or less completed work on the biography. I hope I've included the details you mentioned. Do you by any chance know what became of the two adopted children? When I said I had included the birth name of Mørch it was in fact in Wikidata. Hope you have no objection to my using Geni as a source. It is easier to view than the one you suggested.
Everything looks good. Niels Peter was a painter (source). Anna married the organist at Grundtvig's Church, who was the son of the Hillerød-based painter Viggo Pedersen.
And more help in suggesting names of notable Danish women in education (our topic for the year) would be appreciated. I've looked at Sylvia Schierbeck but there's not much about her in connection with education and I can't find any others on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality.--Ipigott (talk) 15:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
I will get back to you on that. Ramblersen2 (talk) 18:05, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Are you aware of this overview of relevant biographies in Dansk Kvindebiografisk Leksikon? The number of names is a bt overwhelming but I think Hanne Adler (also covered in Dansk Biografisk Leksikon) must be a good candidate. Anne Marie Petersen, who started a still existing girl's school in India, could also be a candidate (source, source).Ramblersen2 (talk) 19:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Ramblersen2: Thanks for the overview. I'll look into it.--Ipigott (talk) 09:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Just to make sure that you didn't miss my ansvar of your other question (about what happened to the two cchildren), I ansvered it above.Ramblersen2 (talk) 10:02, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Ruth Neto edit

PAWO led me to her. Pretty amazing life. As far as I can tell, she is still living. If you can give her a copyedit, I'd appreciate it. No worries if you are too busy. SusunW (talk) 22:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

  • SusunW: Obviously another really important figure. It looks to me as if she is still very much alive. From this, it can be seen that last summer she was in Rome. I think we need to be very careful her biography does not read like an obituary. I've changed "she is remembered" to "she is recognized" but other changes may be necessary. I'm not sure it is a good idea to include so many honours and awards in the lead. It might be better to say more about her achievements.--Ipigott (talk) 09:52, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
I like the is recognized. That clip is her sister-in-law, who I am doing next. [Maria] Ruth vs. [Maria] Eugénia. Lots of sources seem to have confused them. The last active thing I find on Ruth was the 2017 awards and they said she had health problems. But, Angola is good about obits as far as I can tell, so I am sure she is alive. SusunW (talk) 13:28, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Sorry about the confusion. I look forward to your article on Eugénia.--Ipigott (talk) 13:46, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
  • SusunW, I took a quick peak at Ruth Neto and much to my surprise, saw that she was a cousin of Deolinda Rodrigues! When I'm asked from time to time to name some women's biographies that I've created that are most memorable to me, Deolinda is always the first name. Thank you for the excellent article on Ruth; you found so much information about her. I wish I could tell her about the impact that Deolinda's life story has had on me... her commitment and bravery were bar none. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:01, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you Rosiestep I enjoyed writing it. This chain project of mine is proving difficult, as I started in Africa, but I am learning so much. Yes, I was surprised by that connection too and remember working on Rodrigues with you. So many redlinks for women in Africa. It's mindboggling. SusunW (talk) 18:11, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

I finished Maria Eugénia Neto, Ian. Perhaps if you have a chance, you can look at it? I've asked George to use his magic to try to help with photos for both of them. Rosiestep, you might also find her interesting. SusunW (talk) 22:31, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

SusunW: Done. Just a few minor changes.--Ipigott (talk) 07:34, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
I very much appreciate you and your help. SusunW (talk) 13:53, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

NPP Awards for 2023 edit

The New Page Reviewer's Bronze Award

For over 1,000 article reviews during 2023. Well done! Keep up the good work and thank you! Dr vulpes (Talk) 02:53, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, Dr vulpes. It's a result of my spending more time on monitoring new articles about women. It's good to see NPPs for women are now down to not much more than 200, a manageable number.--Ipigott (talk) 06:40, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hey! edit

Hey, Dear Ipigott. i hope you're doing well. actually, I want to know how to upload images on infobox? Youknowwhoistheman (talk) 18:49, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Youknowwhoistheman: You simply add the bare image file to the |image item in the infobox. See explanations under "Images" on Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes. The image file must of course already be included in Commons.--Ipigott (talk) 07:05, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks you dear @Ipigott, But. The problem is this, can we put any image on Wikimedia Commons? can i upload any image wiki commons? Like: This image. Youknowwhoistheman (talk) 09:06, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Stephanie Haynes edit

Dear Ipigott, Here is a possible stub for another neglected jazz singer. Stephanie Haynes (jazz singer On my screen I can't see any curly brackets or apostrophes or wiki links so I am hoping this one is less problematic for you? I will stop with these singers now I think as they are so hard to find info for e.g. date of birth even! Balance person (talk) 09:22, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Balance person: There's still one strange wikilink: Newport Beach. and a curly apostrophe in Vitello’s and one in Haynes’. But don't worry, I'll fix them.--Ipigott (talk) 11:42, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: Done. Looking forward to the next one.--Ipigott (talk) 12:04, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Oh good she is in! I wasn't sure if the lack of birth date etc meant she couldn't have a page. Thank you so much for dealing with the problems! I think I will try another story teller next. Balance person (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello edit

I was wondering if you could see if Swedish intervention in Sweden meets the criterias neccicary to becoming a c-class? Dencoolast33 (talk) 09:01, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Sorry, i meant Swedish intervention in Persia Dencoolast33 (talk) 09:02, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you Dencoolast33, for creating this interesting historical article. You'll see it's now C class. There are a couple of items with missing citations which you should try to repair. You have a tendency to repeat wikilinks. One wikilink per item is sufficient. Please let me know if you need any more assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 10:29, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for reviewing my article! I will keep what you said in mind while deiting it in the future. Dencoolast33 (talk) 11:46, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Marcela Pérez de Cuéllar edit

From Africa to Peru (but headed back to Africa  ). If you have time or the inclination can you look this one over? Thanks! SusunW (talk) 18:05, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

SusunW: She was far more active than I thought. You say in the lead "After divorcing her first husband..." but then we read later that it was in fact her second husband. You'll see I've changed this to "Following earlier marriages". In "The luncheon served as Gorbacheva's last official meeting with outgoing First Lady of the United States Nancy Reagan and his first introduction to incoming First Lady Barbara Bush." I've changed his to her. Hope that is correct.--Ipigott (talk) 10:10, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
Good catch. Yes, after the 2nd. That first one was so short I forgot it. (and I wouldn't have known anything about it except that it was a handwritten note in her baptismal record, so then I had to figure out why it wasn't mentioned. Literally he died 31 days after their marriage.) I remembered the luncheon, it was a big deal, but I had no idea she was who finally got day care for UN workers nor that she was the first goodwill ambassador for UNIFEM. As always, I appreciate your help very much. SusunW (talk) 13:50, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ian edit

It would be great if you could contribute to the page Mariya Rusalenko. Its a discussion on valuing sources of local sources and depth of it.

Thank you. Existence Leesaaisath 08:42, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you, Leesaaisath, but my language knowledge does not extend to the countries involved. While her research seems interesting, as far as I can see she has not yet received any generally recognized awards. It might be wiser to write an article about her book. Thank you for creating so many articles on people from Maldives.--Ipigott (talk) 09:00, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Jan Blake edit

Hello again. I was surprised to find that Jan Blake storyteller was not yet in the encyclopedia so I have tried to do a page about her. I wonder if you could take a look? She should be here..Jan Blake. No hurry of course and maybe I have done weird things that don't show up on my screen...? Balance person (talk) 15:30, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Balance person: Now in mainspace. As you have now created quite a number of articles, you should try to move your drafts to mainspace yourself. You can find guidance at Wikipedia:Moving a page. I hope this also works for mobile access. If you run into any problems, please let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 17:06, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for checking and moving Jan Blake. To be honest it is not the moving of a page that worries me, although thanks for telling me the help page for that. It is the checking that you do to make sure the page is good enough to be moved and also after that I have no idea how to do the links that you do and the talk page and things like that. How about if you checked my next page to see if it is good enough. And then I move it myself. And then let whoever knows more than me do the linking and the provision of a talk page etc? How would that be? Balance person (talk) 18:06, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: We could certainly give that a try.--Ipigott (talk) 20:39, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Maria Pia Fanfani edit

Wow! What a life. No frivolous socialite in sight. If you have time or the inclination, she could do with a copyedit. SusunW (talk) 19:38, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

SusunW: Before I start going through this in detail, I would just like to point out that I found the names used for her (Vecchi vs Fanfani) very confusing. It might be technically correct to refer to her as Vecchi after her first marriage but apart from the box, there are no indications of her various names. I've sorted it out now but others may have problems too.--Ipigott (talk) 10:51, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Done. I look forward to the illustrations.--Ipigott (talk) 12:19, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
I appreciate you and your help. Perhaps the main issue is that in the lede you don't really have the full info from the article, but I think it's important to know both names because her partisan work and publishing were done as Vecchi. She was very clearly one of those women impacted by the requirement to have the same name as her spouse. All of the sourcing and publishing notices reflect her married name variants and I followed them. I even noted on the selected works section that her first two books on Italian embassies were published as Vecchi and the rest as Fanfani. Without knowing both surnames many sources would be missed. For example, the biography of her in Bartrop lists only one medal from Poland, but by searching both names, I realized she received it twice in different decades. (It's also weird that as Vecchi, her given name usually appears as Mariapia, but as Fanfani, mostly as Maria Pia.) I am hoping that George's search in the Reagan White House photos will contain images of her. There are some lovely ones in Italian papers, but none are out of copyright. The best one in US papers which was published without a copyright notice in 1975 when she married, cannot be used either, as it was published first in Italy and would be considered a derivative work. If he cannot find an image in the Reagan photos, I'll have to load a fair use image. SusunW (talk) 15:07, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
SusunW: She appears in this image which seems to be OK according to Creative Commons. As for the names, do you think it would help to expand the lead with her birth name and first married name? When I first read the lead, I seriously wondered whether the first Vecchi referred to her husband. In the widely accessed mobile version, you don't see the infobox details until after the lead. Alternatively, you could simply replace Vecchi in the lead with she.--Ipigott (talk) 18:24, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
That image is fabulous! Thank you. I never use my phone for anything other than a phone, so you are correct that the infobox placement is different. Who would have known that? I will put both her maiden and 1st married name in the parenthetical. I truly appreciate our collaborations. They are genuinely what wikipedia is about, collaborating together. SusunW (talk) 15:43, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
  • SusunW: I'm nowhere close to you in searching for images in historic journals and newspapers but I often find Creative Commons search comes up with interesting suggestions. As my wife frequently accesses Wikipedia on her iPad, I am aware of the variations in mobile presentations. One of the differences is that the display for longer articles often shows only the lead. If you are really interested you have to open the other sections separately but I'm pretty sure most people don't do so. That's one of the reasons why I always try to start my articles with a substantial lead. You can always simulate the mobile version of an article by adding "m." after "en." in the url. And from time to time it might be worthwhile looking at your recent articles on your mobile phone where the slim screen brings in additional constraints. From How Many People Use Wikipedia in 2023?, we can see that "Over 46.4 million people access Wikipedia from their mobile devices daily and more than 23.4 million—from desktop." We have to move with the times.--Ipigott (talk) 16:11, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
That is all very helpful information, thanks! I've asked George about cropping the image you found. I am thinking it will have to be loaded as fair use, but still we can use it. The issue is that if the author is unknown, how could it be released as CC4.0, who released their rights? Unknown author is typically 70 years and 70 + 1980 = 2050, so I think the licensing is probably wrong, but I am no expert. SusunW (talk) 16:23, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello, is there a limit to how much you can edit? --Anna Kelsoe (talk) 01:54, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi there, Anna Kelsoe, and welcome to Wikipedia. No, there are no limits on how much you can edit but edits should always be backed by reliable sources. Under the welcome message on your talk page, you will find links to guidance on how to edit. I think your efforts to write about Michael Jackson were deleted because you included them on your user page where you should introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in Wikipedia. In any case, we already have a biography of Michael Jackson. If you want to experiment with editing, you should first click on Sandbox at the top of your user page. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 06:52, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Vanessa Lubach edit

Hello again Dear Ipigott. Looking for printmakers, I came across Gail Brodholt who is in already and saw that she has an extremely short page. So I thought an excellent printmaker called Vanessa Lubach could then also have a page, even if a bit short. If you think the page is okay, then I can endeavour to move it to main space, make the categories okay, and then see if I can make her a non orphan. I see that a talk page seems automatically to have been created? If so, then I don't have to learn how to do that! But you may think I should concentrate on people who can have longer pages? Lubach does do such fine work though. Balance person (talk) 19:19, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Balance person: Thanks for the reminder. There have been so many messages here over the past couple of days, I missed it.
Interesting article. Looks fine to me. See how you get on with moving it, etc. Let me know when it's in mainspace and I'll check to see if everything's ok.--Ipigott (talk) 10:02, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello! Thanks for okaying the page. I have moved it but cannot seem to get rid of the two square opening brackets before the Categories at the bottom! Oh dear! Balance person (talk) 12:15, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: Categories, etc. OK now. Each category has to be inside double square brackets.--Ipigott (talk) 14:55, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Anna Kelsoe on User:Anna Kelsoe (20:33, 24 January 2024) edit

I'm sorry this is long but do you think that there is any thing wrong with this. Micheal Jackson Pepsi Incident

American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson suffered second and third degree burns on his scalp in the filming of a Pepsi commercial. When stage fireworks that were set to go off as he's walking down stairs went off too early and caught his hair on fire.

The US $5 million endorsement contract was signed on November 11, 1983 between Michael Jackson, The Jacksons, and Pepsi-Cola, involving sponsorship of the "Victory" tour and two TV commercials.

The singer was performing his cover of Billie Jean for the company's commercial. He was asked to stand a little too close to fireworks that were meant to go off behind him. The commercial was set to be filmed in front of a live audience and shot like concert.

The explosives went off too early and a spark caught Michael Jackson's hair on fire. Many believed the singer had been shot, as he yelled and grabbed his head. And in itself could be believable as it was filmed in front of a live audience.

"A spokesman said the he had suffered second-degree burns on his skull and would be transferred to Brotman Medical Center's special burn unit. Jackson said he had suffered third-degree burns on the back of his head that had almost gone through his skull"

For this and more on his health visit "Health and appearance of Michael Jackson"

The damage to his scalp caused his hair to never fully recover and grow back, causing the singer to have to wear hair pieces and wigs for the rest of his life. Although Jackson underwent many treatments to try to help his scalp most procedures worsened the damage. He eventually decided it would be best to hide the damage done to his scalp and would wear many custom hair pieces throughout the rest of his life.

It is known that once Michael Jackson was recovered enough he went and visited other burned patients in the institution. Pepsi gave him $1.5 million, all of which he donated to t --Anna Kelsoe (talk) 20:33, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Amelia Barbieri (and Fatuma Ndangiza) edit

So I have discovered an issue with the "chain". If, like when writing Barbieri, I get hung up with source requests from the exchange, my drafts pile up. The RX said it will be another 1-2 weeks before I get the longest article about her, so I am going ahead and taking her live since the next one is already finished too. But, I made it back to Africa, just in time for Black History month. If you could give them a copyedit, that'd be lovely. It will take me a few minutes to get Ndangiza live. I appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 16:22, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Busy with other things today. I'll go through them tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 16:27, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much. SusunW (talk) 16:49, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
SusunW: I've now been through both of them. Think they're more or less OK now but might go through them once more tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 17:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much. I genuinely appreciate your help. SusunW (talk) 18:43, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Hindi Wikipedia edit

Hey @Ipigott, Good evening! i hope you are doing well.

Actually, I am an Indian wikimedian. and understand hindi very well, how would it be if I create all the articles I have created under 'Women in Red' on Hindi Wikipedia also? Please suggest me better idea. Youknowwhoistheman (talk) 13:00, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Youknowwhoistheman: Namaste! You are certainly welcome to create your articles in Hindi too.--Ipigott (talk) 13:59, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks you. Youknowwhoistheman (talk) 11:10, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
@Youknowwhoistheman, sorry to jump in, but are you aware of the translation tool? See WP:CXT. Some people love it, some people hate it, but I find it saves me a lot of effort, even when translating to English Wikipedia (where the machine translation is blocked). It might save you a lot of time, if English-->Hindi machine translation is any good, since it will do a basic machine translation for you that you can then fix. It will also translate wikilinks and so on, which is helpful. -- asilvering (talk) 17:56, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Hey @Asilvering, Thanks you for this amazing information. its very helpful! Cheers and happy editing! Youknowwhoistheman (talk) 13:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Asilvering This is the second time I have received this warning (see above). I have brought the problem to the attention of various participants but I believe we now need to wait until next Tuesday when a bot will populate it. If not, it can be deleted. Thanks by the way for help with WP Electronic literature.--Ipigott (talk) 09:44, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Ipigott It won't be populated, since you didn't do any of the other things that cause it to be populated. Not to worry! The other categories I created are already working. :) -- asilvering (talk) 16:44, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Asilvering: Just as well we have experts like you who understand the intricacies. No problem for me if it's deleted. So, Ser Amantio di Nicolao, no need to bother about this one and it looks as if the other two will be populated by bot next Tuesday. Sorry for bothering you.--Ipigott (talk) 17:29, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:NA-importance Electronic literature articles edit

A tag has been placed on Category:NA-importance Electronic literature articles, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. asilvering (talk) 17:49, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ipigott, thanks for creating these two earlier, I think the template shouldn't create redlinks to them and we don't actually use importance in the project (yet?) so we can delete them. -- asilvering (talk) 17:52, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Asilvering:: Is there any way we can prevent them being recreated by bot? They seem to have resulted from Lijil work on templates. See Categlories on the talk page, in particular "You must either immediately create these categories yourselves if they're wanted, or edit the template to ensure that they aren't being generated at all if they're not wanted, and they cannot be left to sit as redlinks at all." I've no idea how to step them being recreated, Can you help?--Ipigott (talk) 18:03, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
I don't understand what you're asking - they resulted from you creating them, not from Lijil working on templates. See my replies to Bearcat in the thread, if that helps? -- asilvering (talk) 18:07, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Asilvering: The two categories appeared as a result of the template and I went ahead and "created them" to try to avoid problems. But from what Bearcat says in the thread, the template will continue to create them unless it is modified. I'm afraid I don't understand any of these technicalities but would appreciate any definitive action you can take so that they are not reposted every three days.--Ipigott (talk) 18:18, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Don't worry, they won't be created again unless you create them. -- asilvering (talk) 21:27, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Talk page templates for video games edit

Hi, I see that you're going through and adding the Electronic literature tag to a bunch of articles and adjusting others as you do so; please be aware that the Video games project does not inherit the class of the overall WikiProjectBannerShell template, so if you remove the class from that tag it dumps it into the unassessed category. --PresN 20:30, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Note that all Wikiprojects that don't follow the new inheritance rules are at Category:WikiProjects using a non-standard quality scale, though I think only video games is likely to have an overlap with your EL project. --PresN 20:40, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
PresN: I apologize for this. I was aware that Milithist had opted out but I had not realized it was the case for Video games. The transition to the new Banner shell environment has its advantages but also its difficulties. I'll try to go back over my recent changes and restore the individual assessment of Video games. Thanks also for sending me the link to the category listing a "non-standard quality scale". I am surprised to see that despite their complaints, WP Aviation is not among them,{cc MSGJ)--Ipigott (talk) 06:47, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
PresN: Sorry I did not see your message earlier. Thanks for correcting most of them yourself. I'll be more careful in future. As far as I can see there are no longer any "unassessed" on Video games.
As you noticed, I added quite a number as they were mentioned in the article Electronic literature or in List of electronic literature authors, critics, and works. Given your interests, you might like to look more closely at the recently created Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronic literature yourself. Up to now, the emphasis in electronic literature has been mainly on women but we now need to make sure pertinent male contributors are also included, as well as their works. Perhaps you can draw our attention to some of those already covered in articles as well as to candidates for new articles. In this connection, you might find it useful to look through the works and authors on Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronic literature/Electronic literature works that won the New Media Writing Prize. It seems to me that with your interests and experience, you would be a useful contributor to the project, especially in these initial stages. I hope you can find some time to help us along. If not no worries. In any case, thanks for all your excellent work in connection with video games. I've just been looking through the impressive list of the pages you have created as well as the listings on your user page.--Ipigott (talk) 07:39, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
It is safer to leave the class in place for projects which have opted out. But if there is no valid assessment in the banner then it will attempt to inherit from the shell (as long as it is valid on that project's quality scale). I can't remember why video games have opted out (maybe something to do with A-class?) but it would be easier if they could use the standard scale — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:49, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@MSGJ: Given the reactions I have received, I don't feel comfortable about making new assessments of the Video games ratings. There will therefore but more conflicts of the type you are trying to avoid.--Ipigott (talk) 15:56, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@MSGJ: Video games only opted out because we don't have A-class. It would be easier to use the standard scale, but the discussion to drop A-class overall got nixed due to Milhist... which opted out as well anyway.
@Ipigott: Feel free to reassess video game articles, we're not that hung up on them, we just didn't want A-class getting populated when we haven't had a formal A-class assessment process for over a decade. --PresN 14:31, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
A-class won't get populated for your project. The only bad thing which could happen was that an A-class article would come out unassessed for your project instead of the rating that it should have, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:54, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

February music edit

My calendar story today is about Michael Herrmann celebrating his 80th birthday. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

DYK that "our" first Isolde in Sveden is pictured on the Main page? I began a new mezzo yesterday (more detail to come, but a recent deaths man waiting), after almost no new article for the vacation weeks. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

She looks really impressive at that enlarged size.--Ipigott (talk) 14:56, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
I agree! Same for the crocuses, and other pics. Try them if you have the time. - Today I am happy about a singer on the Main page (at least for the first hours), after TFA the same day last year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:29, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks to Seiji Ozawa. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:56, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
... and today a woman and her views --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:05, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
  • Impressive day-by-day preparation. I just take one day at a time and see what happens to come my way.--Ipigott (talk) 06:18, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
The day-by-day is the result of what's coming my way. I look at the recent deaths, and sometimes I just do cosmetics, and sometimes I prepare an overlooked woman (as Paris), and sometimes I am hit by personal memories (as Ozawa, more detail on my talk, linked above). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:57, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:15, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Can't find what you are presenting here.--Ipigott (talk) 16:23, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
You might try the Main page (mentioned), or my talk where the credits arrive and I list Music. Or just listen to the music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:16, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I've just realized the image is File:Nordfriedhof München, crocus.jpg - really beautiful. I had found everything else before. Sorry to have bothered you but I always like to go in and see everything you so enterprisingly cover.--Ipigott (talk) 17:30, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Understand, - I sent this - with little personal changes - to all who had already received this image, and didn't realize that due to our conversations the context was not immediately there. My discoveries of the day were - clearly linked - the article about T's music (with the woman's image), and the song. I had no idea that he set a Goethe text (in Russian), and how! DYK had no room for his music ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Listen to music from Ukraine if you like, - I heard it in 2022, and the November concert (at a different church) raised a truckload of winter clothes. My story today is also from my life: I heard the singer in 3 of the 4 mentioned musical items. I sang in yesterday's. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:40, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
Today's story celebrates a woman's birthday. She sat right in front of me when I took the picture at a lovely concert, celebrating her son's 60th. I thought she was 90 today, - no, 91 already. You can listen, starting at the piece he dedicated to her, Op. 1. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:03, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
more music and flowers on Rossini's rare birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:31, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Oda Gasinzigwa edit

I am completely surprised that my chain is now at 11. I truly thought I'd end up making multiple chains, but this is both hard and fun. If you have the time or inclination, Gasinzigwa could use a copyedit. I always appreciate your help, but if you don't have time or don't want to, no worries. SusunW (talk) 17:53, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Seems interesting. First thing tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 20:40, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
I've been able to make a few minor improvements. I wonder if there's any way of finding her maiden name. Your biographies usually make a clear distinction in the names of women before and after their marriage(s). As for her DOB, I would provide it in full as she states it herself in her own account. I'm learning quite a bit about the recent history of Rwanda. I've always found it strange that the country chose to became a member of the British Commonwealth in 2009 and changed the official language for teaching from French to English. Maybe it was a result of the influence of people like Gasinzigwa who were raised in the English-speaking Commonwealth countries of East Africa - or simply because they wanted to forget about their past connections with Belgium. Interesting to see how you are adding links to the chain.--Ipigott (talk) 12:16, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for the help. Yes, I am learning so much writing these African women. I think that they adopted English for both reasons - to help with their integration with other African states and to sever identification with their colonizer nation. And I agree that it probably had a lot to do with so many people who had been exiled in English-speaking countries returning to rebuild the country after the civil war.
The maiden name seems impossible. Discovering birth names and photographs of these women is very hard. I kind of wondered if it was customary, like it is in the Pacific not to name (speak the name of) the dead. The one I am working on next Scholastica Kimaryo is similar. I have yet to discover her maiden name or her father's name, although she named her mother. None of the sources about her, name her husband, but sources about her son (frustratingly not what we would call RS) name his father. They seem to confirm what I had been thinking was a naming trend, that a woman is identified by her husband's full name, so for example, she is Scholastica Sylvan Kimaryo. Sylvan is not her maiden name, but rather the given name of her husband. We have no article on naming trends, so it's just an observation. Very frustrating. Given the time frames in which they lived, I think photographs will mostly be impossible unless someone with more skill in finding images of living people works on finding them. SusunW (talk) 15:08, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
May I suggest you simply contact her at ogasinzigwa@nec.gov.rw (from here), draw her attention to the biography and ask if she is happy with the way in which it is presented. You could also invite her to provide a photograph (or have someone upload one to Commons) and find out whether she is happy to reveal her maiden name, exact date of birth, etc. I have a feeling she would be happy to collaborate with a project aimed at improving coverage of women.--Ipigott (talk) 16:11, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
That's a lovely idea! I will. Thank you. SusunW (talk) 16:15, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Done. Fingers crossed that she answers. SusunW (talk) 16:56, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

CfD nomination at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 February 9 § Women foos edit

A category or categories you have created have been nominated for possible deletion, merging, or renaming. A discussion is taking place to decide whether this proposal complies with the categorization guidelines. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 February 9 § Women foos on the categories for discussion page. Thank you. HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:48, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you, HouseBlaster, for drawing this to my attention. A mixture of "female" (mostly for sports} and "women" categories have been used without major problems over the years. As you will see from my comments on the Categories for discussion page, there are in fact hundreds and hundreds more "women" categories which you have not listed. As far as I can see, you have not had very much experience in writing about women. In future, if you have further proposals along these lines, it might first be useful to bring them to the attention of pertinent wikiprojects such as Women in Red or Women. I must say I am amazed at the number and variety of categories you have nominated for discussion over the past couple of days. It must be difficult to keep track of them all. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 15:11, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

Tendai Moyo edit

Dear Ipigott, I wonder what you will think of my draft page on Tendai Moyo and yet another failed attempt to do categories. I thought I was following your advice on each category having to be in square brackets but I have obviously done something wrong. Ho hum! Anyway...! I would be very grateful if you could tell me what you think? No hurry at all from my side. Balance person (talk) 17:47, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, Balance person. I'll have more time for this tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 17:51, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: Done. You are making progress with categories but you should check to see if they exist before you add them. The last sentence is the article is rather long and not too clear. Perhaps you can improve it. It's the first time I have come across hair types such as 3c and 4c but I see there are explanations in Kinky hair.--Ipigott (talk) 10:46, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks very much for sorting out the categories and for moving Moyo to main space. I am delighted to see this topic in the encyclopedia. I have rewritten the last sentence. Is there a list of categories against which I can check? At the moment I am just guessing and copying the categories from similar biographies if I can find them. Not very competently! Balance person (talk) 12:27, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Balance person: Thanks for rewriting the last sentence. It's now much better. As for categories, you might like to try using HotCat but I usually add them on the basis of those I know and, like you, on those used in similar articles. There are many "non-diffusing" categories on women which require the inclusion of the equivalent more general category.--Ipigott (talk) 13:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Scholastica Kimaryo edit

I still have no clue what her birth name is. I have written her as you suggested I do for Gasinzigwa, who has never answered. We'll see. One thing I have figured out is that journalists/writers often treat women as if they live in a bubble and don't mention other people they worked with. Before I take a chain link live, I have to make sure the "next victim" is identified, which makes it even harder. At any rate, if you have the time or inclination, Kimaryo would benefit from your copyediting. Thanks. SusunW (talk) 18:48, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

@SusunW: Done. As you seem to be writing these in British English, I've changed items about "returning to school" to something along the lines of "returning to her studies" as I don't think the use of school for university is as common as in American English (even though we have the London School of Economics). It was good to see Scholastica finally lived up to her given name. But there really wasn't very much to do on this one. Sorry to hear you have not yet heard from Gasinzigwa. The call for contacts looked so welcoming. You could always try contacting RebeccaRwanda who is a member of Women in Red and pretty active. I think she would be interested in any articles about people from Rwanda including Oda Gasinzigwa.--Ipigott (talk) 13:29, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
As always, thank you. I actually write them in AE and then convert them, but it's better that you look them over to make sure I didn't miss something in "translation. I appreciate you. I'll ask RebeccaRwanda and see if she can help. SusunW (talk) 14:59, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Article remake edit

Hello,

I am trying to remake an article that was deleted a few years ago for lack of citations. The article would be Cindy Ball-Malone. I don't know how to go through the process to recreate it without it being delated. Can you help? Thank you. Eibln (talk) 09:13, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi there, Eibln, and thanks for seeking my advice. Unfortunately, there is a strong tendency to have previously deleted articles deleted once again if they are recreated. Unlike you, I am no expert on women in sports but you might find it useful to look through Wikipedia:Notability (sports)/FAQ. Cindy Ball-Malone was in fact deleted twice in 2019. You can see from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cindy Ball-Malone that the article was first deleted because the sources apparently did not provide any substantial information about her. If you wish once again to write about her, you should first make sure you have at least three reliable independent sources which describe her in some detail. The presence of her name in club listings, etc., does not demonstrate notability. From here and this recent news, it certainly looks as if she has made considerable progress since 2019. Once you think you have managed to put together a solid draft, you can let me know and I'll take a look. Happy editing! (PS If you intend to write more articles about women in sports, you might like to join Women in Red.)--Ipigott (talk) 10:11, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much! Yes, I tried to make her page a few years ago, and since then she has made significant strides in the Sports industry. I definitely think now it would be more suited to pass inspection now.
I forget how to make a draft page before actually publishing it. Please remind me. When I am done, I will let you know, and hopefully be resubmitted to be reviewed, because I thought there was a process to go through if it was deleted.
Again thanks! Eibln (talk) 10:47, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Make the draft at User:Eibln/Cindy Ball-Malone. If you were the one who created the earlier article, we'll have to be doubly careful. Better leave it to me to move the draft to main space if it appears solid enough for inclusion. The process for recreation consists of contacting the administrator who approved the deletion and explaining why you want to recreate the article. If you agree that I should move it to main space, then I don't think this will be necessary but I would be happy to inform the two admins who approved the deletions. Let's first see how the new article stands up to notability.--Ipigott (talk) 11:04, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
I see you have created Draft:Cindy Ball-Malone. I purposely suggested User:Eibln/Cindy Ball-Malone as those working on AfC are liable to delete the draft if they consider it similar to the deleted version. With all your experience, you don't need to go back to AfC. I see, BTW, that Ref 1 is a dead link.--Ipigott (talk) 10:40, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Just noticed you are now working on User:Eibln/Cindy Ball-Malone.--Ipigott (talk) 10:44, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
I think it is ready to be looked over. I spent a lot time searching for extra articles and resources to throw in. I also wanted to let you know that I was the one who tried creating the article last time it was deleted. I do, however, think it is a much better article worthy of being approved this time around. I appreciate you jumping through all the hoops to get this approved! I did start on the Draft:Cindy Ball-Malone page before I saw your message, I then removed everything from that draft to move it over to User:Eibln/Cindy Ball-Malone. Eibln (talk) 10:52, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Two quick points. The ref in the lead is a dead link. I think it would be better to replace Ref 2 by this as the one you have now is from Web archive. And how about expanding "Head coaching record"? I think a short introduction would help but the way you have presented things may be in order. Hope I'm not being too demanding.--Ipigott (talk) 11:04, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Ref 4, Time to Ball is also a dead link. I cannot access Ref 5 "for legal reasons" (EU data protection). Ditto Ref 11, Big 12 Conference. But if you can access them, don't worry. There is no source for her marriage to Robert Malone. How about this? If you can take care of these details, I will be able to move it to main space. It's coming along very well.--Ipigott (talk) 11:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Two of the categories are red links. I think that's about it.--Ipigott (talk) 11:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
I will make the changes later today and let you know. I can access ref 11. Now Ref 4, I cannot and I will likely replace or remove. I will also fix the two red links. I’m glad you think it is coming along. I think it will be almost ready to go when I am done with it later today. Again thanks! Eibln (talk) 12:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
The two categories that are red links are previously deleted. I didn't want to remake them without asking you first, what I should do. The other references are fixed. I also added a few. Anything else you can think of to add would be helpful. Also most other coaches don't have a short introduction at the Head coaching record section. Eibln (talk) 15:08, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Eibln: Thanks for following up on my suggestions. As you've probably seen it's now on main space and I don't expect any problems. I've deleted the two red.linked categories. I don't think we should invite trouble by recreating them now. As there's a reference for the first sentence in the lead, you might like to include one for the second sentence too. Please let me know if you run into any further problems. And keep on adding biographies of women in sports.--Ipigott (talk) 16:50, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I will add a ref for the second sentence too. Hopefully it will be reviewed at approved with no problems. I take it you already addressed with the people who previously deleted it? I don't want it to get deleted again. Eibln (talk) 16:56, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Good. I've reviewed it so there should be no further problems. When I moved it to mainspace, I added a comment that it was a vastly improved version of a previously deleted article. That should be sufficient. It won't even appear on the list of new articles to be reviewed. In view of the extensive infobox and the tables, I'll promote it to C class. I'm always happy to help people along. Great stuff!--Ipigott (talk) 17:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I really appreciate all your help. I hope you don't mind me asking for help if needed from time to time. Thank you! Eibln (talk) 17:10, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

You're always welcome, especially if you run into trouble with articles about women. The main reason for success on Wikipedia is that contributors can cooperate.--Ipigott (talk) 17:12, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

One last suggestion. After all the trouble we've had with this, perhaps you can persuade Cindy to provide a picture - or have someone add one to Commons.--Ipigott (talk) 17:16, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I have honestly never had any luck trying to figure out how to add pictures or anything, which is mostly why I have never added pictures to any of my women's sports articles. I would love to have pictures for my articles. I don't know the stipulations or what I would need to do it. Eibln (talk) 17:36, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Virtually all the photographs of people in sports you find on the internet are protected by copyright. Only those taken by individuals who upload them to Commons can be used. In some cases, the subjects of Wikipedia articles are happy to provide a photograph if invited. See Wikipedia:Image use policy and Commons Uploading files.--Ipigott (talk) 09:55, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Sounds a little bit out of my comfort zone.

Kristi Bredbenner edit

I also have another article I would like you to look over before submitting it. Draft:Kristi Bredbenner Please let me know what you think. Eibln (talk) 10:48, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Eibln: Why do you think there's a problem with this one? Has it previously been deleted?--Ipigott (talk) 10:55, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I’m hoping no problems. No, I just wanted to make sure everything looked alright. I figured I would start new articles in drafts so I don’t have to feel rushed to get everything done in one sitting. I just struggled to find some of the information for this article. Eibln (talk) 11:19, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello edit

Can you rate the 2 articles I created 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannibal%27s_raid_to_Rome 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Olynthian_War Vbbanaz05 (talk) 01:02, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Vbbanaz05: Both very well presented articles. I don't know how the Milhist bot is set up, but it is strange that it only gives a C rating. Is First Olynthian War a translation from the Russian or from one of the other language versions? If so you should have included this in your first edit summary and add a translation template to the talk page. The next time you edit the article, please add "this article contains a translation of the Russian article Олинфская война (382—379 до н. э.)" or whatever other article it has been translated from. See Help:Translation. As much of your work seems to be based on translations, you should at least include the translation template on the talk pages. Several of your articles contain insufficient inline citations. You should make sure there is at least one inline citation at the end of each paragraph.--Ipigott (talk) 08:22, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much and yes. I translated this article from Russian Wikipedia. Vbbanaz05 (talk) 10:42, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello again, could you please rate my new articles? Thank you. Vbbanaz05 (talk) 14:04, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Vbbanaz05: I see that Battle of Sapriportis is a translation of Battaglia di Sapriporte and the other of Assedio di Arpi. As I said above, when you translate articles is it very important for copyright purposes that you mention this in your first edit summary when creating the article. You should then add a translation template to the talk page. See Help:Translation. You should also click on "add links" at the foot of the LH margin and complete the connection with the article translated for Wikidata. I've completed these steps for both articles but please make sure you take care of them for future translations. I suggest you also wait for your articles to be assessed in the normal way. I don't really have time to assess all the new articles from individual contributors. If you find a number of your articles have not been rated for two or three weeks, you can then let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 15:05, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Okay, Thank you! Vbbanaz05 (talk) 15:08, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello, I created new article can you rate it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin%E2%80%93Kirin_Operation This time, I write on the talk page which Wikipedia I got the translation from. Vbbanaz05 (talk) 00:56, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Vbbanaz05: It certainly helps to have the translation template on the talk page but your first edit comment on creating the article itself should have said something like "translated from Харбино-Гиринская наступательная операция on the Russian Wikipedia". The next time you edit the article, please add to the edit comment "this article contains a translation from Харбино-Гиринская наступательная операция on the Russian Wikipedia". See Help:Translation.--Ipigott (talk) 07:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Done, I just don't understand why MilHist bot always gives Start Class to my articles, that's why I always refer to you, sorry if I'm disturbing you. Vbbanaz05 (talk) 10:01, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Vbbanaz05: It's a bot that comes in and provides a rating. I just change the parameters to what they should be.--Ipigott (talk) 11:32, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. You really help me a lot. Vbbanaz05 (talk) 11:33, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Anne Shongwe edit

I think I've finished with her. I'd appreciate you giving it a copyedit. No worries if you are too busy. SusunW (talk) 16:33, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

SusunW: Done. You're making great progress with BLPs. I'm afraid I've absolutely no experience with computer games and rarely use mobile phones. Any idea if all the games run in English or if, like their titles, they are designed to run in Swahili. From the links you give, they seem to run in English which is not always widely spoken in the countries in question.--Ipigott (talk) 14:00, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

I know, it's weird that I don't seem to find any dead women, which you know I am more comfortable writing about. That said, there are a lot of notable African women that need to be written. I don't know diddly about games either and my cell phone is a phone. I don't do anything with it except communicate and have zero experience using it for anything else. It could be that the links I found were because I searched in English? I was really happy to find the scholarly review of the games. Didn't expect that. I appreciate your help. Ellinor Hinks edit

Dear Ipigott, I wonder if you would take a look at Ellinor Hinks when you have a little time? I am sure she's notable but the things I found about her to cite are often pdfs of old magazines and I am not sure how to deal with pdfs so I may have done them wrong. Apologies in advance if I have made a mess! No hurry from my side of course Balance person (talk) 18:52, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks! edit

Thanks for your speedy help and the move of Hinks to main space. I am grateful as ever. Have a good weekend! Balance person (talk) 09:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Balance person: I finished it late yesterday and did not have time to report back. Check my edits to see what I needed to change. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I will do that, thanks. And, wonder of wonders, I have just discovered the Categories button on the edit page between the pen and the ? icons. I see it gives choices and tells you when one is not right etc. Miraculous!!! Did I once know this and then forgot it? Ho ho. I should be able to do them myself from now on. Susan Wakhungu-Githuku edit

Finished Anne's sister-in-law (she's now the 2nd sister-in-law in my chain). So I've gone from video games, which I know nothing about to tennis, which I also know nothing about ;). If you have time could you give it a copyedit? Thanks! SusunW (talk) 15:54, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Probably tomorrow. I know a bit about tennis as a spectator, not a player.--Ipigott (talk) 16:06, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Looks like her aunt was a notable entrepreneur and educator: Mary Okelo [fr]TJMSmith (talk) 18:30, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
SusunW: Done. I wonder if tennis was also a source of income for her. Her writings seem to be more important than any achievements from her consultancy. She still appears to live in Nairobi. From here, her company seems to be called Human Performance Dynamics Africa or simply HPD Africa.--Ipigott (talk) 13:27, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
TJMSmith There were a lot of women listed in the Business Daily article that are in the book. I only picked out a handful that I was sure I could find sources on. Did not know Mary was an aunt. Feel free to write her. I'm working on Norah Olembo. As always Ian, I appreciate your help. No idea if she ever went pro. I was really lucky to find a fluke in the Hathitrust catalogs. Although it says the The Weekly Review are search only apparently they are marked non-commercial and full views are offered. That's how I finally was able to document a lot of her tennis history. And yes, she still lives in Nairobi. She's on the board of a ton of businesses and consults with them, but I didn't want the article to read as promotional by listing the business relationships, which are also mostly in non-independent sources. Seemed to me as well that the writing was more significant, as there were plenty of independent sources about her books. I appreciate you both. SusunW (talk) 14:28, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, and a question edit

Hello @Ipigott and thanks for your welcome message to the WikiProject! I appreciated the link you shared; I actually may have read *too many* of en.wiki's policies and guidelines, making it feel very overwhelming to do anything more than edit existing content.

The intro essay you shared is not only great as an overview for newcomers, it helped *distill down* to the basics, making me feel more capable of approaching redlink fixes!

I realized as I set up to edit more, and have begun focusing on referencing and citations, I have one question you might be able to answer. I understand that lead/lede sections are supposed to give a brief overview of the article to follow. Is it expected that, as one adds summarization of content to the lede, they will copy over any citations for specific claims? Or are lede sections generally left unreferenced unless contested?

It's hard to phrase this in the abstract, so I'll give two examples which I suspect might be different:

Example A: "Academic Figure XYZ became president of ABC university in 1999." (This lede sentence would be summarizing 1-2 sentences in the subject's "Career" section which have citations backing them)

Example B: "A pivotal point in academic figure XYZ's career came with the widely discussed publication of ABC study in 1999." (This lede sentence would be summarizing a standalone section on ABC study and the strong public reactions to it, with many citations backing the section)

To me, Example A is much more straightforward but still needs to be referenced in the text; would we also cite the summary sentence in a lede paragraph, or just rely on the reader scrolling down?

Example B, in contrast, goes even further by implying multiple things in WikiVoice (that a publication was widely discussed, and that this was pivotal to the subject's career), so my instinct is that lede content like this would, in best practices, *always* be cited to at least one RS that in fact implies those things too.

Even if there are sufficient citations in the in-depth section of the article, it can be hard for readers to quickly find the sources which make this overarching claim that we "borrow" when crafting appropriately sourced WikiVoice summaries.

Thanks for your time reading this, if you think this is best answered at the Teahouse or somewhere else, no worries- I can happily copy it over. I just recalled your message and appreciated the offer, as creating an actionable "big picture" of best practices is a work in progress for me!

Have a great day ☺️ - Chelsea aka Chiselinccc (talk) 03:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, Chiselinccc, for this interesting question. When creating a new article, I always start by writing a fairly substantial lead with all necessary references. As I expand the article, I draw on the sources from the lead and add additional sources as required. If I am carefully improving an article (e.g. up to GA standard) or considering it for DYK, I move refs initially included in the lead to the body of the article. But in general, when you are creating a new article, you should just make sure all key information is supported by reliable sources whether in the lead or elsewhere. Sources used in the lead section can of course be used again in the body of the article if they cover similar or additional details. There are no strict rules about this and I would not bother too much about it until you gain more experience. If you want help with a specific article, just send me a link. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:42, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Amazing answer, thank you @Ipigott! I come from an academic writing background with a painful focus on rigorously scaffolding outlines and then filling them in, which I suspected wasn't a good approach with the fundamentals of building solely from what reliable sources say. This not only helps fill in that blank, but it's honestly a lot less stressful-sounding as well. The process of building from sources has the same excitement for me as reading in general.
I have the good fortune to have encountered another editor who I'll be collaborating on a draft with shortly, it was actually the Women in Red infobox on their profile that encouraged me to join as well.
I've reviewed the lists on the WiR project, and as a technologist myself, I will probably start tackling women in technology after this first collaborative draft gets me more comfortable with the stages of drafting and publication. I will make sure to reach out if any specific questions come up in that process, but you've already helped so much with this answer! Thanks and happy editing to you as well 🙌 :-D Chiselinccc (talk) 07:55, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Chiselinccc: The WiR redlists of potential candidates serve only as a basic guide. Now that so many are taken from Wikidata listings not based on articles in other language versions, they require careful selection. I realize it's quite a difficult step moving from academic writing to Wikipedia. Academic writing has the advantage of relying on a series of informative primary sources whereas Wikipedia, in the interests of limiting inclusion to those reliably recognized, seeks first and foremost to establish the notability of the subject of a biography. This is achieved by revealing more than just a passing mention in at least three good independent sources such as national (or recognized) biographies, newspapers, journals, award write-ups, critical assessment of related works, or accounts in published books. Women's coverage in sources such as these is unfortunately far less prominent than for men and therefore frequently requires looking for sources which are not immediately apparent from internet searches. But your academic experience should of course help you along. I look forward to seeing a draft of your first biography.--Ipigott (talk) 11:46, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Norah Olembo edit

I think she's a big deal. It took me seemingly forever to work on her fighting through allergies and medication. But I think I'm done. Dates were hard to come by and I'm not exactly sure what to call her push for policies. She didn't actually draft them, but was clearly the force behind their creation and the recommendations which were incorporated. I also couldn't really find any reviews of her research. I did find a list of publications and included only the ones in which she was first or second author. If you could give it a copyedit, I'd be most grateful. SusunW (talk) 20:05, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

SusunW: Yes, a really outstanding figure and you've done a really good job on it. "Proponent" is sometimes a good term to use for those who effectively move policies forward. I was interested to read that she was limited to taking O-level biology. I took 13 O-levels when I was 15 but biology was not among them. My boys' school no doubt considered biology was for girls! British English does not use "through" meaning up to the end of a time period. You'll see there are several instances where I've changed it to "until". Sorry this has taken longer than usual. I was tied up with various unexpected things yesterday morning and we later had visitors. There was actually not very much to copy edit. I sometimes wonder how many of those who view pages like this read more than the lead - but for those who do, it's just as well to try to get things right.--Ipigott (talk) 12:03, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it so very much. No worries about time, whatsoever. As I said, writing it was slow. Allergies seem a bit better, finally. Did not know about "through" will try to remember it. I like you have no clue about readers other than me. I get the idea most people read the lede, end stop. It's what drive by editors usually edit in my experience. SusunW (talk) 13:24, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
The RX exchange finally found an article from AllAfrica that I wasn't able to get from the WP library. She called herself a lobbyist, which might be helpful to link to. I'll add a bit from the article, which is quite detailed, a bit later today. SusunW (talk) 14:02, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
