Controversies: Lupe Fiasco

edit

In 2010 during an interview with XXL, Soulja Boy explained that he wanted to rap without being overly complex, and then went on to say that he didn't want to be like Lupe Fiasco where "n*ggas don't understand what the f*ck I'm saying."[1] Fiasco responded with a series of rhymes on his twitter making fun of Soulja Boy's singles and then released the song S.L.R. (Super Lupe Raps), emphasizing metaphors and puns in its lyrics while specifically saying, "Soulja call it Super Lupe Lyrical/You can't understand nor mimic my miracles." while also expressing that new artists shouldn't be afraid to make intelligent lyrics.[2]

The result was merge. --BDD (talk) 21:52, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I propose that Soulja Boy: The Movie be merged into Soulja Boy. I think that the content in the Soulja Boy: The Movie article can easily be explained in the context of Soulja Boy, and the Soulja Boy article is of a reasonable size in which a trimmed merging of Soulja Boy: The Movie will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Essentially, and because the film's release co-incided with Soulja Boy's October 18, 2011 arrest, it did not receive wide coverge in reliable sources. The only in-depth review I found was a negative one in DVD Talk. While my work on the film article resulted in it surviving AFD, one review... even with spotty pre-filming coverage... really does not meet the requirements set for film at WP:NF. At least here in the Soulja Boy article, it can be spoken of in context and has less of a chance to be returned to AFD for lacking separate notability. Legacy Not Needed

edit

My recent editorial to the article removes his legacy section. Why? Cause it's not needed in anyway. Usually when an artist has a "legacy" section in their article it's because they're finished with music and their career is complete. Soulja Boy's career is not close to being done and he still has plans to make music. He's only 23 years old and still has a long way to go. His legacy has not been fulfilled or completed and for such a young musical artist to have a "legacy" on their page is ridiculous. Maybe right now he's known for some of his earlier work (his 2007 album) but what he's remembered for could change soon and I don't believe it's right for such a young artist to have a legacy section so early, not to mention the section hardly has any detail. Padraic73 (talk) 13:53, 14 May 2014 (UTC)== Misleading paragraph under U.S. Armed Forces ==Reply

The second paragraph under the heading U.S. Armed Forces is misleading. The references (133) link to a BTZ.com article which uses a TMZ.com article as source. The TMZ article clarifies that the album 'Respect my Hustle' is banned from sale in AAFES (Army & Air Forces Exchange Service) stores. That's quite a bit different than a ban on all of his 'music'.

copyedit Nov 2016

edit

I've performed copyedit on the article and removed the copyedit maintenance banner. There was some rephrasing for clarity and conciseness, removing redundant phrasing and overlinking, and neutralizing the tone. Notes:

  • There were a couple places where it went into a lot of detail, so I added summarizing sentences to paragraphs in an effort to make it easier for readers to find information.
  • There is a discrepancy whether The DeAndre Way sold 70k or 100k copies. This should be checked and dated.

If you have any questions or comments, please post them here.

There is still a bit of a tone issue, that parts may seem like it is written from a fan's point of view. Particularly the sections "2011–present" and Stacks on Deck Entertainment/Mixtapes seem excessively detailed. Are all of those mixtapes really notable? Is the cover art of the mixtapes notable? I did not thoroughly check the references but it seems to rely on primary sources. If there is no secondary source attribution after so many years, it might not be notable. Perhaps editors could start a discussion about whether some of the content could be trimmed, keeping only the most important examples and summarizing the rest. Opinion-heavy writing in Musical style: Rapping technique

edit

The first paragraph of the section on Soulja Boy's rapping technique has nine insults in two sentences (I'm not counting 'repetitive,' which is both objectively true and an accepted feature of many genres of song and poetry). That seems like a lot, perhaps nine too many?

An attempt to clean up the bias here:

Way is best known for his simple lyrical verses, everyday or humorous subject matter, complex rhyme schemes, and nontraditional song structure, and as a quintessential exemplar of the snap and Southern hip hop music styles. Way has also been well known for his minimal, repetitive hip hop production style and catchy hooks.[153][154] Speaking on his no-frills rapping technique and light lyrical matter in a November 2010 interview with XXL Magazine, while Way was explaining how he has grown as an emcee he stated: ..."

Original text, for clarity:

Way is best known for his rudimentary and superficial lyrical verses, vacuous and insipid subject matter, convoluted rhyme schemes, vague song structure, and for embodying the quintessentially trivial snap and Southern hip hop music style. Way has also been well known for his rudimentary and repetitive hip hop production style, with catchy hooks nonetheless incorporated into his songs.[153][154] Speaking on his rudimentary rapping technique and vacuous lyrical style, in a November 2010 interview with XXL Magazine, while Way was explaining how he has grown as an emcee he stated: ...

Also: which is it? Are his verses 'rudimentary,' or are his rhyme schemes 'convoluted'? Even if the subject matter is unsophisticated, a complex approach to rhyme certainly suggests another form of lyrical sophistication.

Under the “Legal issues” segment, paragraph 6, line 4, it is mentioned that Jake Paul is a “Professional Boxer”. He is not. Instead it would make more sense to refer to him as a “Youtube Personality” as this is the field in which he is best known and his predominant source of fame. 2A00:23C6:9B22:F01:F94D:BEDD:3AE1:6A96 (talk) 12:40, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
