Waltzing

edit

ALoan and I can't agree on one sentence. He originally wrote "[Strauss] has contributed to England's waltzing to victory in his first eight Test matches". I wanted to change it to "... England's winning his first eight ...", and we went through a couple of iterations without agreement.

I thought "waltzing" wasn't very encyclopaedic. ALoan thought it was a good pun. Would anybody else like to express an opinion? Stephen Turner 11:12, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Oh! Can't encyclopedias contain a little bit of fun? The only problem I can see is that people without English as a first language may miss the colloquialism.
I agree with most of your homing edits, by the way: they make the article much more focused and less flaccid. It's a shame that some of the details are lost, though... -- ALoan (Talk) 13:39, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your response, ALoan. Two reasons I don't like it: (1) I admit I didn't get the pun until you pointed it out. I think it's too subtle. (2) Even once you get the pun, I think it implies that the victories were more comprehensive than they were. One of the interesting features of England's recent run is how many of the matches were equal or in favour of the opposition half way through.
I'd like to hear what other people think though. Stephen Turner 13:58, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Run out?

edit
"He was run out by Nasser Hussain for 83 in England's second innings."

This needs clarification. Nasser Hussain, his team-mate, can't possibly run him out - if I remember right he ran himself and left Strauss stranded, but it's still confusing. Erath 18:55, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Removed. Even if Nasser Hussain should not have run for the single it was no he who ran Strauss out.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 156.34.77.121 (talkcontribs) 05:57, 21 February 2006.
I think we should be a little more eager to spend 30 seconds on Google finding out the facts behind things rather than just delete them because we don't think they make sense right at the moment - Hussain was to blame for the run out. Average Earthman 09:35, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think Erath's point is that a batsman can only be run out by an opposition fielder. However, I disagree. "Run out by Nasser Hussain" is a commonly-used expression and the meaning is clear. Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:42, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, sorry, my point was that all reference to Nasser Hussain had been expunged, rather than an effort made to find out the actual facts and write a clear statement. Average Earthman 13:30, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup and rewrite etc

edit

I'm undergoing a cleanup of this article, and referencing etc. Any comments are welcome, as is information on his pre-international domestic career etc. (I have done the lead and test debut so far!) MDCollins (talk) 17:06, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Second child

edit

It has been mentioned that Andrew and Ruth Strauss are expecting their second child. Are there any references to this news? I was watching the first test match very closely and I do not remember one occasion wherein the commentators had mentioned about this news. Could someone please confirm this news? Thanks - div123

Some issues

edit

The more recent contributions, largely from the second half of New Zealand and South Africa tour England onwards, are dragging the article into issues of poor tone. The contributions are reading more like a CricInfo or newspaper review of events rather than a factual account of the events. If the batting was poor, for example, a reliable source has to say so, and then to be safe directly quote from that source. Putting simply "terrible batting" in the article makes it out to be Wikipedia's opinion and that is original research. SGGH ping! 18:08, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

A lot of the recent referencing is poor and needs attention too, access date and where the article is sourced as a minimum addition to url and title. Harrias (talk) 18:10, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
