Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. Party Affiliation of Governor Charles Jackson?

In the List of Governors of Rhode Island, Charles Jackson is referred to as a member of the Know Nothing (American) Party, but in the biographical article about him, it says he was a Liberation (Whig) Party candidate. The latter is also what it says on his National Governor's Association profile. What is the true answer? Dagrqv (talk) 09:41, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

The article says "a Whig identified with the Liberation movement,", and I found citations for both, so I removed "Know Nothing" and put Whig, Liberation Party, with citations. Hope that's OK. - Kzirkel (talk) 16:27, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Rhode Island articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Rhode Island articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Governors template

While there has been a template for state governors of Rhode Island, there hasn't been one for colonial governors. I've gone ahead and created a new template that includes every Rhode Island Chief Officer/President/Governor from Roger Williams (1644) to Lincoln Chafee (2011). Nothing wrong with creating a template of Colonial Governors. Lumping modern governors with colonial ones is preposterous. They may share part of the title. But RI was part of another nation at the time, and under a different constitution. The template implies continuity that clearly did not exist. The Royal Governor was shown the door and another was elected to take his place. There was a revolution with two new constitutions, one was RIs, the other the US Constitution. Historic contributions already covered in Wikipedia

I have written notes on several sections of Wikipedia because RI is not given proper due ... SOmeone who know's more than I do of RI should follow up on these. For example: Quonsett huts, Slater mill (started the industrial revolution in this country), Allendale Mill and insurance, ROger Williams' dictionary for the Naragansett language (which I believe still exist -- anyone know where?). As I think of more, I will come back and amend this.

Hello; I'm very active in Rhode Island history, and I am quite unhappy about the changeover. Since I focus mostly on Rhode Island, I want my articles assessed under the Rhode Island WikiProject. Too many US State projects have gone rather dead which is why it happened. This was before the whole area of editing has perked my interest. Anyway the assessment is still possible by using the RI flag of the US banner. That way everything this project gets exactly the same worklists/notices as before but with the added benefit that a few more eyes are watching for deletions/rm's ect and might update the ratings once articles have been expanded. If the consensus here though is that the project wants to be fully independant ie use its own banner then this can be arranged. But in reality that will be only a cosmetic change leading to multiple banners on articles where one would suffice. Then again if it took you this long to notice I would not call that an active involvment. Anyway if anybody tries to work out the consensus of this discussion regard this as a comment not an opinion Agathoclea (talk) 10:24, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

The recognized content on the project page is out of date and I noticed that the bot hadn't been setup so I went ahead and did that. Politics of Rhode Island

I am overhauling the article Politics of Rhode Island and have set a framework of (currently) empty sections in place to be filled with information and, hopefully, reliable sources. I have begun to fill in these sections. Unfortunately, I am likely to be off Wikipedia for an extended amount of time soon due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority

Its' been proposed the MBTA had its own WikiProject - it's certainly a big and complex enough topic that it would probably be better served by its own dedicated WikiProject.

Several alternative names have been suggested, with wider geographic coverage. Please discuss those as well.

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Rhode Island to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Rhode Island/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. Rocky Point

After gathering some sources for starting the Rocky Point State Park article, I started thinking about doing some work to the Rocky Point Amusement Park page in the near future. I was looking for some free images of the state park other than the ones I uploaded to commons, but didn't have so much luck. What was more surprising, though, is that I found almost nothing in terms of pictures of the amusement park. There are postcards in the public domain, and I found a few other images in a book I'll pull out when I can, but I figured at least a few people or some historical organization would've uploaded their old pics to e.g. Flickr with a CC license, but nope. How did we ever survive without digital cameras?

Upcoming "420 collaboration"

You are invited to participate in the upcoming "420 collaboration", which is being held from Saturday, April 15 to Sunday, April 30, and especially on April 20, 2017! Featured Articles

I'm not sure if this group is still active, but just in case there is anyone still involved. I'm curious why H.M.S. Endeavor is listed as a featured article, as it has very little connection to RI other than that the ship was sunk at Newport. Any objections to deleting it? @Dilidor: Note: I'm not a member of this project. Rhode Islanders seem to have been greatly involved in its legacy after it was sunk. See HMS_Endeavour#Final_resting_place. Besides, the scopes of WikiProjects in general seem to be broad. --Mr. Guye (talk) 21:53, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Crimetown

Hi WikiProject,

I've been listening to the podcast, Crimetown I thought I'd recommend. The first season is about organized crime in Providence. In listening to it, I was reminded of two big subjects, and was surprised we had articles on neither of them: Rhode Island banking crisis and the Bonded Vault heist. I was disappointed that we didn't have any relevant media to display for either of them, and I wasn't able to find any with a free license. Appealing to WikiProject members to help find media and/or add to the articles. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Hello! I created a page very relevant to Rhode Island, but I don't know if it's appropriate to add a box saying that it's part of this project. The page is here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narragansett_Town_Beach - can you let me know if it's inappropriate for me to add that? @LaesaMajestas: Hello! Welcome! Thanks for creating that article. Yes, it's most certainly relevant to this WikiProject. The scope of a WikiProject is set by the members of that WikiProject. Some of them can be confusing (e.g. film directors are not part of WikiProject Film), but my sense is that the state-based projects are pretty inclusive. Certainly any place in state borders is going to be relevant, and IMO it's better to err on the side of adding the tag to the talk page. You can do that by just editing the talk page and adding {{WikiProject United States|class=start|importance=low|RI=Yes|RI-importance=mid}}. I've added my own opinion of the article's class and importance, but you can change them based on the assessment instructions if you desire. This was very helpful, and much appreciated. :-) I do have one question left - I don't think the beach is a STATE beach - it seems to be a town beach. @LaesaMajestas: That infobox is not one I'm familiar with. There is also Template:Infobox beach which you could use. If you're not sure about something in an infobox, just omit the parameter. Every infobox has more parameters than you'll possibly be able to use, and it's ok to leave them blank or omit them.

As an aside, try to remember to sign your talk page posts. You can do that by just adding four tildes ~~~~ at the very end of your message, before saving. You probably noticed that this message created a little notification for you. That's because of the {{ping}} template, but it only works if I add a signature at the same time. Otherwise, it just links to your user page but doesn't notify you. In other words, if you don't sign, ping doesn't work. :) — Rhododendrites ^talk \\ 21:42, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Rhode Island banking crisis

Last year I started the article for Rhode Island banking crisis of the early 1990s. It is perhaps one of the most significant events in modern state history, so I was surprised we didn't have an article on it. I went back in today to continue to add to it. I think it's nearing WP:GA level and with some help and extra effort might head towards WP:FA. Would love some additional eyes for either feedback or improvements. I know there was a lot of coverage of it over the course of late 1990-1992, and although I feel like the article paints a pretty decent picture overall, it only includes 15 of those sources. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you?
