Stella power stations

I am not the author of Stella power stations but I think that it's good enough to be a Featured Article. Before it's (prematurely?) made a candidate, what do you people think? Looks good to me - FA can be a tedious process involving lots of additional work, so it might be worth asking the main authors of the page what they think first, and if they have time at the moment to make edits/clarifications/rewrites within a short time span. Looking at the edit history, User:Fintan264 seems to be the big cheese, and he has noted that he's on a Wikibreak at present. Good luck with it if you decide to nominate it - I'll be supporting. Rothbury: Councillor Bridgett

Could someone advise please? Councillor Bridgett seems intent on promoting his own name into the lead of the Rothbury article. I see no other articles in the 'major settlements' of Template:Northumberland where individual councillors are even mentioned, let alone self-edited into it, let alone right up in the article lead. I'm at the point of WP:3RR with this. For background please check my edit history, Councillor Bridgett's edit history, the Rothbury edit history of today (1 Aug) and the consistency of the various Northumberland place articles in this regard. No, I can't find fault with your thinking: a mayor maybe but one of many non-notable representatives at local and national level? And that's even without the blatant COI concerns. Keys to the Past site moved

I don't know who else has used it but this site which has a database of listed buildings in County Durham and Northuberland has moved, but it's easy to convert the old URLs to new ones. If they looked like this:

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Suggestion to rename assessment categories for this project

Greeting WikiProject North East England, it was noticed recently that your project was one of 11 out of about 1660 WikiProjects that preceed the assessment categories with WikiProject. All the rest state only the subject (ex. North East England vice WikiProject North East England). In an effort to standardize the assessment categories and make it easier to identify the scope of articles we would like to change the assessment categories of your project from WikiProject North East England to simply North East England to be in-line with all the others. Before doing this we would like your input on this change to ensure that it meets the consensus of your project. It was also noted that the assessment categories for this project say Tyne and wear which redirects to WikiProject North East England and we were wondering if this should be changed to North East England. Project category names

Despite the fact that this project ceased to be WikiProject Tyne and Wear four years ago, the quality and importance assessment categories still use the name, e.g. Category:Unknown-importance WikiProject Tyne and Wear articles. Ponteland - error in Landmarks

Gateshead

Not sure if anyone is still around (I see Bob pottering about from time to time but that's all) but I am planning to have a real go at sorting out the Gateshead article once my present WP:GAN and WP:FAC submissions have completed (for better or worse). Frankly, that (important) article is a mess and needs I think a lot of work. Was hoping someone might fancy volunteering to help out- I suspect it might be a bit of a tough job... Uhuru Ministries problem

Having just started to try to contribute, I think everything is a hard job on Wikipedia. My first article was instantly flagged for rapid deletion and when I tried to improve it my improvement was rapidly reverted. If anyone is still in here and knows the wonderful charity Uhuru Ministries then perhaps they can help improve the stub article about them before it is culled. KRHSmith 22:42, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Training event for UK Wikimedians

Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia, we are running a weekend training workshop that will take place on the weekend of 23–24 February in Newcastle. Wikipedian in Residence: Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums are advertising for a Wikipedian in Residence (announcement). It's a funded post, part-time through spring and early summer, based in Newcastle (so may well suit a student). Applications are open until 4th March. They're particularly interested in the prospect of someone wanting to work with the shipbuilding & industrial history collections, and digitising some of the material they have in their archives.

Spending time with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on Wiki

The previous heading spoke about a Wikimedian in Residence for Tyne and Wear. I am that person and the project page is here. If you are editing in the North East and wish to come to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle which is where the Archives are held, there could be scope for arranging an editathon in subjects which tie into the area and the collections the service holds. It would need to be during a weekday, possibly a Monday which is when maximum number of machines with internet access could be obtained. No WIFI sorry. So this is a feeler to to find out who is out there and what possible links gel with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums. A good number of interesting subjects from our area are not yet covered on Wikipedia or need further editing. The Armstrong No.1 Gun or the RMS_Mauretania_(1906) liner builders model in the collections here are examples. Wikimedia user and editathon opportunities at Discovery Museum Newcastle Upon Tyne

• Learning at Work does connect to Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums service. As part of the Wikimedian in Residency's outreach we will hold a Wiki Users / Editathon session on Monday 20th May in the Discovery Museum Archives Search room. This would be for members of staff, volunteers, Wikimedia editors active in the North East and others with a burning interest in the linkage between Wikiproject:GLAMWiki and this service. Initial expressions of interest gratefully recieved by myself. There will be morning and afternoon sessions at 10am and 2pm.
• Using the same pattern for a Wiki Users / Editathon session in the Discovery Museum Archives Search room (above) a similar event targetting people outside the Archives & Museums Service but interested in it and Wikimedia will be held in the same venue and same hours on Monday June 3rd. Sessions will start at 10am and 2pm. Other times by negotiation. Please pre-book. For both events internet enabled terminals will be available. Wifi is not available.

Please help get North East England ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Wynyard Park / Wynyard

Working on North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust I wanted to link "Wynyard" to something useful, other than the Wynyard dab page - the cited newspaper article talks about it as a place - but the only article I could find was Wynyard Park which seems to mix the historic house and the current residential area. Could someone who knows the area perhaps split this article to create an article at Wynyard, County Durham, if appropriate? (It's a redirect I've just created, for now.) Hi, I found this Flickr Commons collection from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums the other day. It shows multiple images of WWI U-Boat 110 which were taken by Frank & Sons, South Shields. I had a look at it, and there seems to be nothing there: the spot on the map is an empty field. The nearest building is a farm. The nearest settlement is Oakenshaw and some digging suggests that Stockley, County Durham was once a sub-district of Oakenshaw, e.g. this. Maybe there was once a village there but it’s no longer there, leaving with the coal industry that dominated the landscape a century ago. So I have redirected it to Oakenshaw, County Durham. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland Comment

First up is Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland, for which I've just started on in my sandbox, and I'm wondering if anyone happens to know what denomination it was? I've listed it as non-denominational for now, however confirmation of this would be helpful.

Training people to edit

One of our events with the Scottish Library and Information Council in May 2018.

Wikimedia UK are running a 'train the trainer' event in Glasgow late next month. It aims to improve training skills, cover how to develop and design training, and hone presentation skills. in-person events are excellent for getting people to think critically about Wikipedia, and people really enjoy peering behind the curtain to see how this place works. We run events with universities, museums, archives, and the like, and having people who can pass on their knowledge about editing is essential. The event is nominally to support our work in Scotland, but also has a wider scope of supporting our work across the UK.

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. RE: Debate on creating a Chris Mullin disambiguation page (now it automatically leads to the basketball player)

Right now, the Chris Mullin page automatically leads to the basketball player - at the same time, there is a Chris Mullin (politician) - the one who led the fight to release the Birmingham Six and vote A Very British Coup (which was adapted to a TV series).

I've started a discussion on the talk page there, requesting to rename the basketball player page to Chris Mullin (basketball), and make the Chris Mullin page a disambiguation page with equal representation to both of them.

Arguments raised against my proposal:

• The basketball player has more views.

My main argument for the move:

• The basketball player gets most of his views from the US, while outside the US he's hardly known, and in Britain itself the politician-author Chris Mullin is much better known.

User script to detect unreliable sources

Main page: User:Headbomb/unreliable

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
