Nine number ISBN

Hello. I'm trying to cite the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde (vol. 1, pub. 1973) using the cite book template. The ISBN, as given in the book, is 3-11-00489-7. As this is only nine numbers long, the template won't accept it. What do I do? Zacwill (talk) 00:36, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Despite being labeled "ISBN" on the title page, it seems that that number is a 9-digit "SBN" rather than a 10- or 13-digit ISBN. The ISBN format was created in 1967 and your book was published in 1968, so it seems plausible that it's still using an SBN. See our article ISBN for more information about the difference between an SBN and an ISBN. The article says "An SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prefixing the digit "0"." So the ISBN for this book would be 0-311-00489-7. CodeTalker (talk) 01:00, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

@Zacwill: According to the docs at {{Cite book}} you should use the "sbn" pararmeter instead of isbn when there is only 9 digits. RudolfRed (talk) 01:12, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Use of infoboxes that link to articles related to a particular subject

Compound question:

1. Is there a name for the infoboxes that collect and organize articles related to a particular subject (as in Criminal law)?
2. What's the usual practice for using these boxes, for example, should they be placed in every article that they list?
3. Is there a style guide page discussing them?

Infoboxes are for showing important information of an article, the type of template that you're referring to might be sidebars or navigation boxes like Template:Elections in Arizona sidebar or Template:Ash'arism. The associated guidelines are WP:NAVBOX and WP:NAV, and the wording in WP:BIDI part seem to encourage the inclusion of the navbox on every article it links for better navigation. 1. I think it is called a "sidebar template" based on the category name of Category:Crime sidebar templates.
2. Not every article. It will just depend what editors think is the best fit. For example for {{Criminal law}} some articles use it and and others do not.
3. I am not sure of. Is there a particular page you are asking about?

adding a note

I'd like to edit the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iwahig_Prison_and_Penal_Farm but I don't know where to put it. Would it be "in popular culture"? Here's what I want to add: Stephen L. Moore's book "As Good as Dead" describes how some American POWs escaped a Japanese prison on the main island of Palawan and made their way to the Iwahig prison. It depends, if the event Moore described actually happened, and details about it (personal names, place names, dates, etc.) can be provided for verification, then it could go on the "History" section. If the event is a work of fiction, then it could go on "In popular culture", assuming that the book does fit the "popular" part by passing WP:NBOOK. Location in infobox usually only require specifying administrative division instead of geographic feature. Information in infobox are supposed to give general idea about the subject, they don't have to be too detailed, the place's location in Cowal Peninsula can be written in the body of the article, preferably in a "Geography" section. (edit conflict) There is exactly one instance of a link to cowal being removed from this article, specifically in the lede, with the edit summary: town and council area suffices. I agree with this, we don't need a lede that states all of the vague places a thing is in or near.

So here's the thing. When Cowal was removed the first time, you didn't ask, "Hey, why did you remove Cowal from this article? What should I do differently to have it be included?" That could have led to a productive, collegial discussion and possibly to it being included in some of the places you tried to add it.

Instead, you made allegations—baseless allegations, based on what I've seen—that the editor had a personal vendetta against Cowal. Such baseless allegations can be viewed as harassment and personal attacks, and they have been in this case.

So really, you have two options. You can drop the whole angle of being persecuted and focus just on content, sourcing, the Manual of Style, and other content-based reasons why the material has been removed, and you will be able to continue to contribute to Wikipedia. However, if the harassment continues, then an administrator is likely to apply some form of sanctions to your account to prevent further disruption, probably in the form of temporarily blocking your IP address from future edits. —C.Fred (talk) 17:13, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

When describing a place's location, administrative divisions and geographic features are often written separately. Take Edinburgh for example, its administrative placement is described first, followed by its geographic location. So for Dunoon, Cowal should be in a different sentence with Argyll and Bute. Also, location of a place does not have to be too specific. For instance, Dunoon Stadium is already mentioned as locating in the town of Dunoon, and since Dunoon is on the Cowal peninsula, the stadium doesn't need to be emphasized for locating on Cowal peninsula. Adding and subtracting ages?

Which template if such template exists could be used to add or subtract two ages together?

For example:

Example #1 If I input {{age|1982|1|1}} → 42

Example #2 And then input {{age|1982|1|1|1992|3|3}} → 10

Is there a way I can add or subtract the result of those two numbers together? With the understanding that the age in the first example will always be increasing yearly and I don't want to have to manually update the sum of those two examples every year? Does such template exist?

Hope I explained that well (basically I want to add 42 to 10 but the number 42 will go up by one every year and when it does I want 10 to be added to 43 automatically without me having to manually change anything. Hope that makes sense).

What context do you need to use this in? If you want to have just a fixed offset, you can just subtract 10 years from the reference date, E.G. 52 -> 52, but I feel like knowing the context might shed light on a better solution. WelpThatWorked (talk) 17:23, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Yeah, so you can rephrase this as just "time since the specified date", since the specified date isn't changing. In this case you'd use {{age|1992|3|3}}, because that's the day you're measuring from. $TODAY-1992=(TODAY-1982)-(1992-1982)$. WelpThatWorked (talk) 18:52, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

@WelpThatWorked: This doesn't work. With the example above, the "current age" will change to 43 on January 1, 2025. But the age difference will not update until March 3, 2025. I don't want to reword age difference to "time since the specified date". Inexpiable (talk) 19:58, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

@Inexpiable: It sounds like you want to compute the ages as an integer and then subtract the integers. You don't need a template to compute on integers. You can use mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##expr for the subtraction. {{#expr:{{age|1982|1|1|format=raw}}-{{age|1982|1|1|1992|3|3|format=raw}}}} produces 32. format=raw gives a plain number which can be used in calculations. @Misha Wolf: You better learn it some time. There are two fields under "New title". The first can only select the namespace, e.g. "User". The second is the part after the namespace. It's prefilled with the old name but can be changed to anything. The page you are moving was fixed when you clicked "Move" and is not controlled by that field. Clarification of MOS:BOLDLINK

This says that in the lead sentence of an article, the boldface reiteration of the article's title that mostly begins the first sentence - for example, as in "Sarde in saor are an appetizer etc" in the article titled "Sarde in saor" - should not contain any links. Can someone confirm that this includes foreign-language links such as {{lang-it|...}}? Sarde in saor doesn't do this, but cf for example Colatura di alici, which does. Hi Jimbaba. You would need to establish the person's Wikipedia:Notability for an article to be written about them, and simply being a candidate for political office is almost always insufficient for doing that. You'll find some more information about this is Wikipedia:Notability (people) (in particular the section tiled "Politicians and judges"). A lack of Wikipedia notability is pretty impossible to WP:OVERCOME regardless who's trying; so, you should try to honestly self-assess this person's Wikipedia notability before proceeding further. If they're not Wikipedia notable, it will matter not how much time and effort you would have spent creating the article if it ends up being tagged, proposed or nominated for deletion.

Some other things you should consider. If you're connected to the candidate in some personal or professional way (i.e. a more than casual way), you probably should take a look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure to see whether they might apply to you. You should also take a look at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Ownership of content, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#Law of unintended consequences and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. While Wikipedia might seem like a great way for a candidate to promote themselves or make themselves better known to the outside world, a Wikipedia article is written about a subject, not on behalf of a subject. If it turns out that an article can be written about this person, they will have zero editorial control over it, and neither they nor anyone else will be able to use it as a means to promote the candidate or their positions. Basically, all content (positive or negative) will be assessed in terms of relevant Wikipedia policies and guideline and will need to be based primarily on what secondary and independent reliable sources (as defined by Wikipedia) are saying about the candidate. Any attempts to deviate from a neutral point of view and encyclopedic tone will almost certainly (perhaps rather quickly) be undone; moreover, any attempts to add content which can't be properly verified through citations to reliable sources will also be undone, particularly with respect to content about living persons.

If after readiing all of the above, you still wish to push on, I strongly suggest that you use the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process to create a draft which you can submit for review when you think it's ready. @Sarmadabbas1122 Hi! From your question, it sounds like you've read reliable sources and understand what a good source is, and you're just looking for technical advice on adding sources to articles. Let me know if I have misread your question.

• If you are using VisualEditor, there is a citation tool in the toolbar. In many cases, it will automatically generate a reference when you give it the URL of an online source. (Sometimes it can't parse the source, and you have to do it manually, but VisualEditor makes it easier, in some ways, to deal with the templates I mention below.)
• If you aren't using VisualEditor, or for certain tricky circumstances, you'll need to enter the Wiki markup code for the reference manually. Start by opening a <ref> tag. Inside of the pair of ref tags, you'll use a template for the type of source, such as {{cite news}}, {{cite book}}, or {{cite web}}. As a hypothetical example:

  Twenty people were saved when Superman stopped a speeding train from falling off a destroyed bridge.<ref>{{cite news | last=Olson | first=Jimmy | title=Superman stops runaway train, saves 20 | work=Daily Planet | date=June 15, 2024 | url=https://www.dailyplanet.fakeurl/superman-stops-runaway-train-saves-20.html}}</ref>

I can't see any obvious reason why editing should be blocked under either account. A bit of searching shows that the message is from MediaWiki:Actionthrottledtext. There have been a few other instances of people having the same issue, though it isn't clear whether they were all due to the bot malfunctioning rather than them trying to do something they shouldn't. If all you've been doing is trying to make a normal edit, it is most likely a false positive. Your IP is unlikely to be the problem, since you aren't blocked on this page. I'd try again and see what happens. If it persists, it probably needs reporting: Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) would probably be the best place to do this, since that's where those most familiar with MediaWiki stuff hang out. If you look at the Commons Description page for the image, C:File:The Eternal Flame, Sarajevo.jpg, you will see a link at the top "Use this File", and if you pick it, it will show you the string to copy and paste into the Wikipedia article.

First find your sources, then write a summary of what those sources say. Doing anything else is like trying to build a house without surveying the site, or checking local building regulations: even if your house looks OK, it will probably fall down, or the authorities will require such extensive changes that you might as well demolish it and start again.

Remember that the sources must be reliable (no social media, blogs, or user-generated sites like Wikis or iMDB):independent (nothing written, published, or commissioned, by the subject or their associates or agents; and nothing based on their words, like interviews, or articles written from press releases); and with significant coverage (at least a couple of paragraphs about the subject specifically: not just mentions, not about something the subject is connected with, but about the subject). Jdxtreme, it's the same as anywhere else. Copyright material may not be used anywhere in Wikipedia unless either it is licensed with a compatible licence, such as WP:CC-BY-SA, or it meets all the criteria in the non-free content criteria, one of which is that it may be used only in articles. --ColinFine (talk) 23:00, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

How to request a new version of a spoken article?

How is the best way to go about requesting a new spoken article that will get the most attention in hopes someone will create one? The written article in question already has a spoken article but it's from 2010, so obviously the article in question has changed a lot since then. As such I don't think it would fall under a spoken article request, as this seems to be for pages that don't already have a spoken version (although I may be wrong here so clarification would be helpful). Also, the original uploader has been inactive on Wikipedia and other related projects for years, so I can't ask them to make a new version, nor do I think I'm comfortable recording myself. I've asked this question on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia and Category talk:Spoken Wikipedia requests without any responses. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Querying all values for a parameter in an infobox.

If there was Template:Infobox Guinea Pig and I wanted to know all of the unique values that had been given to the parameter "tail color", is there an easy way to search this? Let's say that there are more than 500 uses of the template. Article hijacked by unrelated company for 14 years and no-one noticed?

Odd case I came across today.

• 18 August 2005: An IP user creates new article on (and named) BlueSpace, an IBM–Steelcase collaboration on a prototype "office of the future".
• 6 June 2010: With their first edit, Justin143143 adds content on a different entity named BlueSpace – a software company in the defence industry – shunting content on the other BlueSpace further down, with the summary "the IBM BlueSpace desk furniture project is now essentially dead".
• 7 June 2010: Another IP user (possibly Justin143143 logged out?), with their first edit, removes everything related to IBM BlueSpace, with the summary "The IBM BlueSpace Office was a failed research project that happened in 2002. It is no longer relevant." The article has now been completely transformed into covering an entirely different topic.
• No-one notices for the next 14 years. The usual chronic COI editing ensues. The article is moved to "Bluespace (software)" in 2020 and "BlueSpace Federal" in 2023.

The defence industry BlueSpace seems to fail our notability guidelines for companies, but the IBM BlueSpace actually seems to pass – on a quick search it's got coverage in the NYT, The Register, ZDNet, The Globe and Mail etc.

I'd like to put the defence industry BlueSpace up for deletion but rewrite and retain the IBM BlueSpace. How should I go about doing this? I can think of two ways:

1. Restore the article to its last unhijacked version (12 April 2009), move it back to "BlueSpace", rewrite an article on the IBM BlueSpace from there. If someone really feels the need for an article on the defence industry BlueSpace, they can write their own somewhere else.
2. PROD/AfD the article and separately expand the redirect BlueSpace into a new article on the IBM BlueSpace.

Reporting IP-hopping vandalism

Hi - I've been going through recent "bad" changes lately and sometimes there's articles that get hit by a vandal over-and-over, but with different IP's. Today it's Multan Electric Power Company - an IP hopper keeps repeatedly changing the first line to stupid stuff. It gets reverted but they just do it again. We are probably not interested in a new logo unless it is already in actual use on the internet. The answer is that this is done by moving the article; but your account is too new to have permission to move articles.

Hi IP 125.253.110.95. When you use the {{cite journal}} template for a citation (like you did here), you need to make sure you add something for the |journal= parameter to avoid getting a "missing periodical" error. All you need to do is re-check the source of the citation and add the name of the missing journal. If you're adding citations, you should make more of an effort to figure out what type they are before doing so. It describes what kind of source it is at the very top of the url you linked to above.

Some other things to consider when citing sources are to not use MOS:ALLCAPS for the name of source being cited in |title= parameter and to avoid excessive quoting when using the |quote= parameter; the former can help avoid a single citation being (unintentionally) given undo emphasis, and the latter can help avoid any possible copyright related issues due to over quoting. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Wrong info?

I was recently reading the Wikipedia article for Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The article mentions that Žipov, Slovakia, is a twin city. However, I couldn't find any citations to support this claim, and after some searching online, I also wasn't able to unearth any sources that confirm it.

Hi Giantskeleton. The WP:BURDEN falls upon whoever added that information to the article to also provide a citation in support. You can remove it you want, or you can add a template like {{citation needed}} (just make sure to date the template) where the reference should go. It's unsourced content for sure, but it's not really something serious like a WP:BLPREMOVE type of violation; so, perhaps the template would be OK to use in a case like this. For what it's worth, that bit of information was added in December 2022 with this edit, but the person who added it only made one edit with that account; in other words, it could've just be someone messing around. I have made edits on the page Pascal Praud: I’ve added a French IPA translation, removed some very political language (e.g. “archconservative”), and added a list of employers in the infobox as per the sources. But my edits have been reverted and classified as “vandalism”. Could someone help me here? A point of contention seems to be that I remove the term “far-right” from the first sentence (it is still later mentioned in the introduction). But in my previous encounters with Wikipedia edits, I was told it was policy to keep the first sentence neutral: name, birthdate, occupation. I also do not think it is necessary to classify a sports commentator’s political views in the first sentence. If you are using the visual editor, you can add citations by clicking quotation marks on the top toolbar, choose the appropriate item on "automatic" part (in this case cite website), then fill out the parameters. If you are asking about the message This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject at the top of the article, the message tells you itself what needs to be done, and there are several links in it that point to pages with more explanation.

If you mean something else, please clarify.

I note that several of the references are to sources published by the university itself. These are not independent, and should not be cited at all, except for the limited purposes explained in WP:SPS. If information in the article is available only from those sources, it should not be in the article (again, unless it meets those limited purposes).

Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
