How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Question about leads

Hi Rosie, hope all is well. Here, it has snowed. A. Lot. ;) So I've heard (both from you and others) that the leads in women's bios and other women-centric articles tend to be shorter. • @Christine, thanks for stopping by and happy new year! It snowed here, too, but now it's mostly gone. I may have said that articles related to women have shorter leads than those related to men, but if so, what I read or if it was said during some wiki-related Zoom meeting -- and I've attended many of those in the last year. I do remember hearing at some wiki Zoom meeting that more and more Wikipedia consumption is taking place via virtual assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa), so include more than 1 sentence in lead paragraphs to give more context to a listener. It may be that WMF Research Department has done a study in this regard and I'm just spacing out on that? I can't see any reason not to; I just wanted to doublecheck I had the right conference first. That said, if there's one thing I've learned about these kind of things, it's that half the time "official" names for them don't get decided on from the twenty variations in use at the time until decades after. I genuinely just meant that as an example of the surprising funds I stumbled on (was trying to get a better copy of the Inter-Allies Women's Congress, and so searched Gallica for "Union française pour le suffrage des femmes" and found all sorts of random things that I need to upload. And then I looked and was it was one of your articles. Of course it is. Point though is you wouldn't expect Gallica as a go-to source for Hungarian posters. Today is a feast day for which Bach wrote several cantatas including Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125, which was on DYK 10 years ago and TFA 4 years ago. I'm less happy that Georg Christoph Biller had to wait days for a Main page appearance under recent deaths, and then stayed not even for a full day. It would have been so meaningful today, with the man in the cantata saying he can depart in joy and peace. - The February pic was taken in memory last year. - If you click on songs: 7 cats on one pic ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

The event was a church service at "our" church, following a concert the evening before, in the style you can listen to in their 2000 album named Prayer for Ukraine (see my talk or their article, or even the article of the same name): half of the program sacred, half anything and international (for which they'd dress in red and black evening outfit). Very friendly, very open - I had two young women staying overnight, after they had slept on the bus the two nights before. After the first concert, they stood all around us and sang - for an encore - an arrangement of the second movement of the New World Symphony, good for goose-pimples. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:36, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean by "... trying California task force...". Why I'm confused is that it appears to me that your upcoming editathon will be conducted via Zoom, so wouldn't anyone anywhere be welcome to attend? That said, if what you're looking for are California editor lists, there's this one for Los Angeles and this one for San Francisco. Assistance with article move

Hi, Rosie. Sorry to bother you again but I need the help of an administrator. I have been following the development of a recent new contributor VRlasso who has now produced a well prepared Draft:Francia Russell which I tried to move to mainspace. Unfortunately, despite the rather confused info about moving a new article to a redirect, I was unable to do so. Your thoughts

Based on your work around Wikipedia, I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for bringing Lucy Feagin to GA status. I'm planning on adding what I can and then having someone copyedit it. There are more things that I can add, but I'm running in to the issue that many sources I find are repeating what I already have in the article. Women in Red Translation Contest

It seems to me, Rosie, that your idea of running a three-month translation contest is likely to be a great success. Now that we have put together a meetup page, I was wondering whether we should bring it to the attention of people in the Wikimedia Foundation who are interested in translation. While I recognize that WMF is interested mainly in having English articles translated into other languages, it seems to me that our efforts to build up the English resource with biographies from other language versions should be of interest. Perhaps Eric Luth (WMSE) would be interested in what we are planning (last but not least in our translations from Swedish!). There are certainly others like Anthere and all those who participated in the recent Women's Day broadcast who might be interested in encouraging wider interest. Hi Ipigott. I like the idea of informing people beyond those subscribed to our mailing list. I'm not sure which WMF staff you have in mind, nor have I have ever heard that WMF is interested mainly in having English articles translated into other languages, but that's an interesting fact. As for notifying other Wikimedians, such as Eric and Anthere, certainly, yes. In one of the main wiki gender gap Telegram groups, we've been discussing using the meta:Celebrate Women page as a "mainpage" for women-related campaigns, and having subpages for each month enumerating that month's events, e.g., meta:Celebrate Women/2022/March, meta:Celebrate Women/2022/April, etc. What do you think? --Rosiestep (talk) 21:22, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

I've found several references to the importance of translating from English into other languages, including for example the less used languages of Africa. So on one hand... I think it is a great idea. This being said... beyond translating articles, we are facing an increasing issue of lack of wikimedia translators for organizational pages. I believe part of that is due to rather recent editors not understanding how it works at all. So right now... I would even feel more motivated helping to boost the translation volunteer team (which in turn might help get more people to also translate wikipedia article). The second point is that, to be honest... until next summer... I will try to not pick on more stuff on my back. I am really packed with all my engagements right now. Thanks, Anthere, for your response. I second Rosie in appreciating everything you have been doing for the women's cause, especially on Meta. I understand your concern for the lack of editors willing to translate organizational pages but it seems to me it would be useful to contact the pertinent language versions of Wikipedia directly rather than the EN wiki where the emphasis is on translating into English. I'm sorry to hear you weighed down by family issues. In your absence, can you suggest other contributors involved with WMF and/or Meta who might be interested in providing support for some of our initiatives? You might have noticed, for example, that I also tried to drew your attention on Meta to our Gender studies initiative in April. But I'll now try to follow up on Rosie's suggestion of putting something together on Celebrate Women/2022/April. The main Celebrate Women page appears to have been very effective for March. Weird redirect

I'm working on the women's studies lists for next month's editathon. I added a link to the pt:Teresa Joaquim but it is weirdly redirecting to Mária Eduardo. If you go to the redirect page it looks like the redirect has nothing whatsoever to do with the person it is redirecting to. The only source on the page shows the name as Mãiria Eduardo. Every other source I find for her is Maria Teresa Neto Joaquim Eduardo[2][3] or Maria Teresa Neto Joaquim Eduardoi.[4][5] In any case, none of them show her name is or ever was Teresa Joaquim, who is a notable academic and who I would like to create a redlink for. Can you, or someone who watches this page fix the problem to allow the link to point to someone whose name really is Teresa Joaquim? Thanks SusunW (talk) 05:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I wouldn't do this. The CNRS employs thousands of people and has been around for a long time, so if that list were even halfway complete, it would be completely unwieldy.
