Recent changes
- You can now edit pages on the mobile site version without JavaScript. [1]
- You can now use the Math extension to write chemistry formulas. [2]
Problems
- A few editors might have been logged in as someone else because of a bug. For security reasons everyone was logged out on 9 February. If you have seen this bug, you can report it. [3][4]
Changes this week
- There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. The plan was to have it leave beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. It will happen on 16 February instead. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [5][6]
- Cross-wiki notifications will be available as a beta feature on Wikidata, MediaWiki, Commons, and all Hebrew and French wikis on 19 February. [7]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 February. It will be on all wikis from 18 February (calendar).

Future changes
- The search function on Wikimedia wikis will get a completion suggester that tries to find the right pages as the user is typing. It will also recognize some typos. This will probably happen in March. It is currently in beta. [8]

Colours in a specific group of maps
In your Vinton County maps, whether township maps such as File:Vinton County Ohio incorporated and unincorporated areas Vinton Township highlighted.svg or village maps such as File:Vinton County Ohio incorporated and unincorporated areas Wilkesville highlighted.svg, why is Elk Township coloured differently from all of the other townships? All Ohio townships are of similar legal status, aside from urban townships (if all Vinton County residents lived in Elk Township, it still wouldn't have enough residents to qualify for that status) and paper townships (which isn't the case, because most of Elk Township is unincorporated); aside from those two cases, I can't imagine what special status could exist. Hello, Sorry to take up your time. I was wondering how you came to create the redirect for the March 87P. The Wiki F1 project has been battling with a persistent and disruptive IP hopping editor for over 6 mths now. He recently created a draft for the 87P out of a redirect for the 87B (same car different category) after his creation of an identical page as 87B was reverted several times. The draft was rejected twice, at least, and has now been blanked and a further identical article placed in mainspace from your redirect. It's been restored to redirect but the IP will undo that first chance he gets. Thanks. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 18:38, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

- I thought afterwards that must have been what had happened. The requester (is that a word?) is our boy. There's already some deleting and restoring going on in respect of the article he created and some others today. He's been blocked three times already. Eagleash (talk) 20:29, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
- He's been making requests for re-directs for non-notable cars so that he can then create articles which are also sub-standard from the re-directs. I guess there's not an easy way to stop him making requests. Not helped by the fact that his IP changes frequently... sometimes more than once a day. Eagleash (talk) 21:13, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Thanks to the Graph extension and Pageview API, we now have {{Graph:PageViews}} templates that can show pageviews for any wiki page for any of the wikis. See the examples.
- The Capiunto extension is installed on test wiki. Capiunto provides flexible infobox functionality for Scribunto and generates HTML for infobox features such as headers and rows. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
- The visual editor now follows the TemplateData
formatsetting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [15][16] - The order of parameters and format defined in a template's TemplateData will be now respected. [17][18]
Changes this week
- On wikis where the visual editor is available in single edit tab mode, red links may open the visual editor instead of the wikitext editor, depending on user preferences. [19]
- Anonymous editor warning is now displayed as a warningbox for consistency in both the visual editor and the wikitext editor. [20]
- Parsoid has been updated to fit some HTML 5 specifications. [21]

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.
Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by 
Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by 
MPJ-DK (submissions), 
Hurricanehink (submissions), 
12george1 (submissions), and 
Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by 
Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by 
Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with 
J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

2016 GA Cup-Round 1
 Greetings, all. The 3rd Annual GA Cup has officially begun, and you can start reviewing your articles/reassessments now! However, sign-ups will not close til March 15th if anybody (who wishes to sign up) has not signed up yet. We currently have 1 group of 33 contestants in Round 1, and we will have 16 Wikipedians left in Round 2. Recent changes
- Files on Wikimedia Commons can now be 2 GB big. The old limit was 1 GB. [23]
- Welcome notifications now have a different symbol. English Wikipedia already had this one. [24]
- The Wikimedia memory cache servers in the Eqiad cluster have now been upgraded to Debian 8 (Jessie). Some users might have had to log in again because of this. [25]
- It is now easier to categorize images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in the Commons Android app. [26]
- Bare attributes in tags now parse according to the HTML5 specifications.
<pages from= to= section=1>will parse as<pages from="to=" section="1">instead of<pages from="" to="" section="1">as it used to. Please use<pages from="" to="" section=1>or<pages section=1>instead. This is mostly likely to affect pages on Wikisource projects. [27]
Problems
- Phabricator has been a bit unstable lately. This should be fixed now. [28]
- The PageView API shows wrong data between 23 February and 29 February for pages with special characters in their title. [29]
- The parsing change mentioned above caused a large number of pages to break, especially on Wikisource. [30]
- You may see falsely formatted edit links on both mobile and desktop devices. Mobile devices can also show incorrect formatted table of contents. This should be fixed soon. [31]
- Templates using TemplateData that were edited with the visual editor might have some problems in wikitext mode. This can be fixed by editing and saving the page by using the visual editor without making any changes. [32]
Changes this week
- Cross-wiki notifications will be enabled as a beta feature on all wikis on 10 March. You will be able to get notifications when something happens on another Wikimedia wiki. [33]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 March. It will be on all wikis from 10 March (calendar).
- Wikivoyages will get the Kartographer extension. Kartographer will allow
<mapframe>and<maplink>tags in an article to insert an interactive map and overlay it with different markers. You can add ideas and suggestions to the Maps talk page. If you find any bugs, you can report them in Phabricator. [34]

Changes this week
- Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. Because of planned work on this, you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for a short period of time on both 22 March and 24 March. This could be postponed to April 18. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
- Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [39]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).

Problems
- Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. The Wikimedia Technology department planned to test it this week. This will take place the week of April 18 instead. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
- In Firefox, the visual editor would sometimes just jump down to the bottom of the page when you double-clicked on a table cell. This has now been fixed. [41]

- Wikibits.js will not be loaded by default anymore starting April 2016. Gadget and script authors should have already updated their code since the previous announcements, but there is another migration path available if needed. See wikitech-l for details.

- Last week Tech News said the new MediaWiki version would come to wikis from 21 March to 23 March. The right dates were 22 March to 24 March.

2016 GA Cup-Round 2
| Greetings, GA Cup competitors! Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Sainsf took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 765. In second place, MPJ-DK earned an astounding 742 points, and in third place, FunkMonk received 610 points. In Round 1, 206 reviews were completed, more than any other year! At the beginning of March, there were 595 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 1, there were 490. We continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible. To qualify for the second round, you needed to make it into the top 16 of participants. Users were placed in 4 random pools of 4. To qualify for Round 3, the top 2 in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 9th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on April 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on April 28 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here Also, remember that a major rule change will go into effect starting on April 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 had an issue brought up in the rules, which we are correcting with this clarification. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: All reviews must give the nominator (or anyone else willing to improve the article) time to address the issues at hand, even if the article would qualify for what is usually called a "quick fail" in GA terms. To avoid further confusion, we have updated the scoring page, replacing the term "quick fail" with the term "fail without granting time for improvements". We expect all reviewers to put a review on hold for seven days in cases such as these as well, in order to apply the same standards to every competitor. - What is to be undone? This, which you already undid? I wasn't attempting to circumvent anything, just moving articles to the new relevant category. I don't happen to be familiar with the CfD process, but I'm just updating links as I see they need it. And why not save the bot work?

There may be objections to the rename proposal, so pages must be left in the old category until the CFD process is completed, at which point a bot moves the category page, and updates all the articles to be in the new category. - ORES is using new models. Tools that use ORES' predictions can behave strangely. ORES also has a new API. [56]

- There was a bug when you used keyboard arrows in templates in the visual editor. This has now been fixed. [58]

Hi, I see you're making some kind of mass edits removing "went extinct" from articles. But beware that you are changing actual titles of sources[66] in the process, which should never be done. Addressing a certain section of the Bactria article.
Recently I was on the talk page on the Bactria article starting a new discussion about the section known as Tokharistan:

Reason being is because although it says in the last sentence "Later, in the 5th century, it was controlled by the Xionites and the Hephthalites but was reconquered by the Sassanids" There are unfortunately no citations or sources supporting this claim.

Problems
- Wikimedia tested a new data center last week. This meant that the wikis could be read but not edited for 45 minutes on April 19 and for 20 minutes on April 21. [67]
- When the data center was tested, new edits were not shown in the recent changes log for 20 minutes. They are in the logs now. You can read more about how to find the edits.
- Unread notifications were sometimes counted incorrectly. This has now been fixed. [68]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia Commons will have better access to Wikidata. They can use data from any page on Wikidata on any page on Commons. This will happen on April 26. [69]
- It will be easier to choose if you want to watch files you have uploaded with the upload wizard. [70]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from April 26. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from April 27. It will be on all wikis from April 28 (calendar).

Species becoming extinct
Hi, I'd just like to point out that if a species is extinct, then it can't become anything ... 
In the English dialects I am familiar with, "went extinct" is considered grammatically acceptable. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 20:39, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
- It does not become anything after being extinct. It wasn't extinct, and subsequently became so. "Went" ("go") needs to go with a noun ("went home"), preposition ("went south") or verb ("went fishing"), not an adjective ("extinct"). - I did Google Scholar searches for "went extinct" and "became extinct", and got 12,600 hits for the former vs. 47,400 for the latter. Clearly, "went extinct" is widely accepted. I think it would be more accurate to describe "went extinct" as U.S. usage, rather than bad grammar. Given that assessment, some usage of "went extinct" should be acceptable, at least in articles dealing with American-related subjects. Note that "went" is used similarly in other contexts, as in a reactor that "went critical". WolfmanSF (talk) 20:01, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
- Sadly, 'went extinct' or 'became extinct' are both rather passive words for what human actions have done to cause most species extirpations since at least the time of the Dodo. I recommend something more in the style of George W. Bush, such as 'extinctified'. e.g. 'Humans extinctified the passenger pigeon, and now poaching has nearly extinctified the white rhino . . .(Couldn't resist it - sorry.) 2016 GA Cup-Round 3
| Hello, GA Cup competitors! Thursday saw the end of Round 2. Sainsf once again took out Round 2 with an amazing score of 996 (a higher score then he received in Round 1!). In second place, MPJ-DK earned an astounding 541 points, and in third place, Carbrera received 419 points. In Round 2, 142 reviews were completed! At the beginning of April, there were 486 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 1, there were 384. Another demonstrable way in which this competition has made a difference is in the length of time articles languish in the queue. At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 9 months [76]; at the end of Round 2, the longest wait had decreased significantly, to a little over 5 months.[77] It's clear that we continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 3 so we can keep lowering the backlog as much as possible. To qualify for the third round, contestants had to earn the two highest scores in each of the four pools in Round 2; plus, one wildcard. We had an unusual occurrence happen in Round 2: because only one contestant submitted reviews in one pool, we selected the contestant with the next highest score to move forward to Round 3. (There will be a rule change for future competitions in case something like this happens again.) For Round 3, users were placed in 3 random pools of 3. To qualify for the Final of the 3rd Annual GA Cup, the top user in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 4th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 3 will start on May 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on May 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Round 2 is over and 35 competitors have moved on to Round 3.
Round 2 saw three FAs (two by Cas Liber (submissions) and one by 
Montanabw (submissions)), four Featured Lists (with three by 
Calvin999 (submissions)), and 53 Good Articles (six by Worm That Turned (submissions) and five each by Hurricanehink (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), and MPJ-DK (submissions)). Eleven Featured Pictures were promoted (six by Adam Cuerden (submissions) and five by 
Godot13 (submissions)). One Featured Portal, Featured Topic and Good Topic were also promoted. The DYK base point total was 1,135. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) scored 265 base points, while 
The C of E (submissions) and MPJ-DK (submissions) each scored 150 base points. Eleven ITN were promoted and 131 Good Article Reviews were conducted with MPJ-DK (submissions) completing a staggering 61 reviews. Two contestants, Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Cas Liber (submissions), broke the 700 point mark for Round 2.

- Using self-closing tags like
<div/>and<span/>to mean<div></div>and<span></span>will not work in the future. Templates and pages that use these tags should be fixed. When Phabricator ticket T134423 is fixed these tags will parse as<div>and<span>instead. This is normal in HTML5. [94]

2016 GA Cup-Finals
| Hello, GA Cup competitors! Tuesday saw the end of Round 3. Sainsf, for the third time, won with a sizable 487 points and a shocking 29 articles reviewed. In second, MPJ-DK had 168 points and 7 reviewed articles. In second place, MPJ-DK earned 168 points with just 7 articles, and in third place, Carbrera received 137 points with just 9 articles. Our two wildcard slots went to J Milburn with 122 points and Sturmvogel 66 with 101 points. In Round 3, 65 reviews were completed! At the beginning of the GA Cup, there were 595 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 3, there were 394. Another demonstrable way in which this competition has made a difference is in the length of time articles languish in the queue. At the beginning of the GA Cup, the longest wait was over 9 months [107]; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait had decreased significantly, to a little over 5 months [108]—nothing before 2016. It's clear that we continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Finals for the GA Cup so that are successes continue. To qualify for the Finals, contestants had to earn the highest scores in each of the three pools in Round 3; plus, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users in all of the pools. For the Finals, users were placed in one pool of the remaining five users. To win the GA Cup, you must have the most points. The Finals started on June 1 at 0:00:01 UTC' and end on June 30 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about the Finals and the pools can be found here. A clarification: in order for the points to count, you must mark your reviews as completed; it's not up to the judges to ensure that all reviews are completed by the end of a round. Continuing confusing edits at Signpost WikiProject Desk
Greetings, If you could please look at Moredecai contributions, some of which are at the Signpost WikiProject Desk. For example, at WikiProject desk/Call for interviews, Moredecai continues signing this template even after being told repeatedly to stop (on their talk page). This editor may be a new person & possibly not vandalism. I myself started on Wikipedia in the spring of 2014, so I'm not familiar with how to deal with this issue. Thanks. - This user is making a lot of random edits, which mostly seem to revolve around the WikiProject Desk, none of which are being constructive and I suspect that they are not here to build an encyclopedia. Thanks for drawing them to my attention; I shall see what actions can be taken. I would certainly recommend for the moment that you ask an administrator to protect the Call for interviews page for the moment to stop you having to undo their edits all the time. Recent changes
- The ORES service has now moved to a new location. This should make it easier to use ORES. The ORES review service is now available as a beta feature on Wikidata and Persian Wikipedia. ORES is an artificial intelligence system for Wikimedia wikis to help editors. [124]
- The order of wikis in collapsed cross-wiki notifications was different than when the list was expanded. This is now fixed. [125]
- A new category for tracking pages with math errors was added: Category:Pages with math errors. [126]

- The Wikimedia Etherpad crashed on June 23. Some edits done that day have been lost. They can be found at etherpad-restore.wikimedia.org for another few days. [127][128]

Future changes
- The Collaboration team at the Wikimedia Foundation will look at developing better tools for edit review. This is because research suggests we scare away newcomers who want to help. [130]
- An e-mail from the Editing Department explains the technical work that is planned and being researched for the future. Items include better wikitext and visual editing, prompts for edits, language improvements, annotations, and meta-data separation. [131]
- The sorting of Notifications into the two fly-out menus is going to change on July 5 to 7. Bundled notifications should be easier to explore and mark as read individually. [132][133][134]
- From 29 June git.wikimedia.org (running Gitblit) will redirect all requests to Phabricator. The vast majority of requests should be correctly redirected. [135]
- Catalan and Polish Wikipedias will have Wikidata descriptions added to articles in the mobile view by default. This is currently a beta option for the mobile versions. This might come to other wikis later. [136]
