IRC

Hi, several people from the baseball wikiproject are getting together after Wizardman's sudden retirement to figure out a better way to organize the Wikiproject. One of the ideas we came up with is having our own IRC channel to help each other, as well as new users with collaboration and content. If you need help connecting to IRC join #wikipedia-coffeehouse connect. The IRC channel for Wikiproject Baseball is #wiki-baseball connect. Thanks Secret account 22:49, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Please stop undoing my additions to Cardinals NRI list, I didn't makeup these names!

Please stop your undoing of what the Cardinals roster of NRIs clearly shows. I don't care what you think might have happened or not, those players are listed as NRIs, and until removed they will STAY on the NRI list (unless a news item says one is removed) as that is the official page for NRIs. Please, LOOK first at this NRI link before you remove any names again. Thank you. --Katydidit (talk) 19:31, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

You're adding players who have been cut.[1][2] MLB.com doesn't update their NRI lists to remove players who were cut, this is known. They show who received invites, not who remains in camp. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:35, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Baseball year template

I don't understand why you deleted the by templates in the 100+ triples list. I don't disagree with the other edits, but that one could use some discussion. The template is used in many featured lists, and has been for years. I looked at the MoS, as your auto-generated edit summary suggested, but the baseball year is different than the old practice of linking every single date, which we (correctly) don't do any more. This actually add useful context, which I suspect is why the template has survived several attempts at deletion. --Coemgenus (talk) 16:58, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

That was an automated edit. Removing the by is one of the tasks performed by the MOSNUM date script. Having the year linking templates there is frowned upon per WP:YEARLINK. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:03, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
YEARLINK is more nuanced than that. It says not to link years "unless they contain information that is germane and topical to the subject matter". (It actually says nothing about templates) This is why I don't do automated edits anymore: they lead to black-or-white interpretations that don't always fit the circumstances. If you're going to delete all instances of by, we should first have a discussion at WP:BASEBALL to see if that is, in fact, the consensus view of things. --Coemgenus (talk) 17:32, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
Well, this is not something I feel so strongly about one way or the other. The year formats are the most important thing from that script. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:56, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer   Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist   Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato.   Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Scott Sizemore

I could've phrased my edit summary better perhaps – I meant to say that there's been no attempt at discussion on X96lee15's part for some weeks, nor any response to my post on their talk page a couple of days ago. Obviously I'm aware there was a discussion on the talk page (and that it stopped a while back without a consensus having been reached). Is there anything I've missed here? – Arms & Hearts (talk) 13:43, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok, understood. IIRC, X96lee15 sought third party input which I thought came down on the side of not having the hatnote. That was my understanding, admittedly that could be missing updates. – Muboshgu (talk) 13:49, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Johnny Damon

The consensus from years ago was that a year of not playing, meant it was ok to update the article as if he is a former player. The infobox says "Last MLB appearance" instead of "final MLB appearance", so that it doesn't sounds like an absolute end of career and leaves open the possibility of another appearance. I mean how long are we gonna wait to update Damon's career? Johnny wants 3000 hits and i'm sure in 2018 if he was asked about a comeback to get the 30000 he would say he would still be looking for a chance.--Yankees10 21:19, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Agreed. Players often don't "announce" their retirement they simply dont get any offers. If he hasn't played for over a year then he's retired even if he doesnt want to be. He can always stage a comeback at somepoint and the article can be updated to reflect that. Spanneraol (talk) 22:43, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
WP:CRYSTAL is all I gotta say. Ask Minnie Minoso, Joe Nuxhall, Gabby Street etc about how they'd never get back to the show. – Muboshgu (talk) 14:30, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Crystal isnt really the issue.. last appearance is still last appearance.. if you wait for an announcement half the guys will never retire. Spanneraol (talk) 16:09, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Agree with the other two. Here's the way I see it: if he does somehow actually come back, the article will be updated without question. If not, we will be left with a perpetual free agent article. We already have hundreds of players who last did anything in 2009, are in their 40s, and are still listed as free agents. We don't need any more of those. Wizardman 17:05, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
"Last appearance" doesn't mean "last" until the "next". It means THE last, and we don't know that Damon has made his LAST appearance in MLB. I don't see any reason to have a quota on so-called "perpetual free agent articles", or what that even means. If Damon determines that he can't make it back to the show and he's done trying, then and only then do we consider him retired. I'm taking this to the community. If I remain outvoted, what can I do? – Muboshgu (talk) 19:32, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Orel Hershiser Page - Edit/Page Control

You edited my entry. I don't mind the chronological aspect however Orel (who I represent personally) wants his step children included in Wikipedia page. I'm going to edit again, and add them, I ask you don't remove them. I understand your level on Wikipedia however you need to consider who is requesting info and that page is not yours to oversee, page is about an individual, not you. I appreciate the help however, his stepchildren will be included in his personal section. Please contact me with questions. Also, chronologically, currently he is most recently married to Dana, 2010. Divorce was 2005. Chronologically you can look at it different ways. I'm working with you however is like if you work with me and not try to control page that is a page for all people to use. I'm sure you understand the concept of Wikipedia, it's a forum for everyone. Thank you. I'll make the edits, put less detail, and you can hopefully accept those edits or offer suggestions. Step children will be included on page. Thank you. (----) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.101.191.123 (talk) 16:54, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ed Easley may have broken the syntax by modifying 3 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
 • ], Easley plays in minor league baseball for the Memphis Redbirds, the Class AAA] affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
 • 20 RBIs. Easley played 2008 with the Visalia Oaks of the Class A-Advanced California League]], where in 118 games between catcher, first base and third base with the Oaks, he hit .247 with six

Ruth

Do you have time to do that peer review? If so, the other peer reviewers to date have finished. We're only 2 1/2 months until the centennial of Ruth's major league debut on July 11, so I'm anxious to push ahead to FAC, but I'd like to iron out as many problems as possible in "spring training". Many thanks for your help.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:38, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

How goes it?

It's been several months since someone has bugged you about running for adminship, and at least a year since I have, so consider yourself bugged  . In all seriousness, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Muboshgu is long overdue, even if you aspire to be a content admin rather than a backlog buster; you will undoubtedly be a net positive with the tools. As always, I am willing to nominate. Go Phightins! 02:15, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

In reply to your message

I did leave an edit summary, stating that I removed the content for it being a paragraph about climate change and not a paragraph pertaining to controversies at the Fox News Channel. Since it has no bearing on whether or not Fox News is involved in a controversy, and instead is solely focused on whether or not they support climate change theories, I felt it did not belong on the wiki page for controversies involving the Fox News Channel. Upon reviewing the citation I could not find a correlation between The Guardian's study of peer-reviewed climate science papers and purported controversies at the Fox News Channel, if I am wrong and the study does correlate to controversies involving the Fox News Channel please detail it for me. Thank you for your concern. Execrated (talk) 14:59, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes you did leave an edit summary, but an edit summary of "Removed paragraph about climate change" doesn't provide any context on why you removed the paragraph. Your second edit summary was farm more descriptive. Looking at it more closely, I do not disagree with you completely. There is probably a way to include that information that is valid, though that method is not ideal. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:35, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
I realized after I had left the message that I had indeed left a rather ambiguous summary. I think that a mention of the fact that the Fox News Channel does not support climate change theories would be appropriate in the section pertaining to accusations of media bias included on that page, though I do not think that the citation in question should be used. The reason for my opinion on this is that the citation links to an article on The Guardian which talks about a second article on The Guardian which in turn links to a study funded and performed by employees of and volunteers for The Guardian. There are much less convoluted and, as such, more reliable means of ascertaining the FNC's slant in favor of conservative opinions pertaining to climate change, such as watching the channel for a few minutes(admittedly I watch it for more than a few minutes a day). I'll try to hunt some information down and add it to the media bias section when I get a chance this afternoon. -- Execrated (talk) 16:04, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

RfC: Should a separate article on the dried flowers and leaves variant of the Cannabis plant be made?

Talk:Cannabis (drug)#RFC: Should the section about the dried whole-flower-and-leaf preparation have its own article? If you have the time, would you please analyse my request, as you interested in our Cannabis project. Do you think there should be a separate section for this topic? მაLiphradicusEpicusთე 21:43, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's   Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's   Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's   ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included   Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and   Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from   Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from   Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to   Czar (submissions) and   Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Please stop arbitrarily changing date formats. If you want to change the date format, bring it up on the article talk page. Citations are always allowed to use ISO date format, no matter what style is in use in the article body. If you look at the article history, ISO date format came first. This is the established date format. Stop changing it. If you have been using a script to arbitrarily change date format, you should stop doing this. It's disruptive, and now you're edit warring over it. I suggest that you just back off. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 17:35, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
