Ottawa Linux Symposium

Hi,

I saw that you were the admin who deleted the OLS page last February. I didn't follow the prod procedure, and I don't know what the content of the page used to be, but it seems to me that OLS is definitely worth a wikipedia page, as it is one of the most important conferences for the development of the linux kernel, usually attended by most core developers, and I believe important technical decisions tend to be taken there. It also seems that many wikipedia pages still point to it. Would it be possible to undelete the page?

Thanks. --Nattfodd (talk) 22:13, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I can't help you that much - I only clean out old Prod pages... I think WP:DELREV would be the best place to take it, actually.   jj137 (talk) 04:36, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Infobox MLB player

Hey JJ, we are having a discussion over at the WP:BASEBALL talk page about the possibility of adding a current playing level to the MLB infobox for players who are on a 40-man roster, and therefore have an MLB infobox, but are not currently in the majors. I was wondering if you could help us with coding the infobox, because I have no idea how to do it. Let me know if you can help. Thanks! KV5Squawk boxFight on! 17:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, basically, I was thinking it would be a box that says current playing level, and then you could fill in AAA and the team name, AA, A, etc. It should be optional too, I think, because then it doesn't need to be filled in for all the current MLB players. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 14:12, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
I see there what you put in, but it's only half the width of the infobox. That's the only thing I see. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 15:49, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Very likely easier, but then the entire infobox template has to be changed every time someone gets promoted, etc. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 16:42, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
That seems to be the most efficient method. This way, the code could essentially be copied to a new template, and then those fields just have to be added in. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 19:38, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps instead of "Infobox MLB player", it could be "Infobox MLB 40 man player". That way, all you have to do is add in "40 man", and it's indicative to the reader and to the coder what changes have occurred in their status. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 02:57, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject College football August 2008 Newsletter

The College football WikiProject Newsletter
Issue IX - August 2008
Project news
  • There's less than one month until the 2008-2009 college football season kicks off, and that's no reason to stop editing! Plenty of historical articles, such as past bowl games, need to be written, and editors are always needed to update teams' season articles. Break out of the summer malaise and get ready for kickoff — check out the to-do list on the Wikiproject College football talk page.
  • A hearty congratulations should go out to everyone who has elevated an article to Good Article status since January 1. During the past seven months, the project has more than doubled the number of Good Articles! In 2006 and 2007, there were a total of 40 college football GAs. In the first seven months of 2008, we've created 42. Give yourself a pat on the back! For those of you who haven't yet created a college football good article yet, what are you waiting for? At the present rate, there will be more than 120 by year's end. Be a part of something bigger and build a GA-class college football article today!
  • During the past few months, an excellent notability guideline for college football articles has been constructed at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Notability, but your help is needed to make it complete. In particular, your help is requested in defining what makes a college football player notable — Is it being a multiple year starter at a position? Is it being named the best player at a position? Or is it something as simple as holding a school, conference, or national record? Participate in the debate at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football/Notability.
  • The College Football Portal needs to be updated with featured articles and pictures. Do you have a great picture that illustrates the best of college football? Consider adding it to the featured image queue on the portal.
From JKBrooks85

Welcome to the latest issue of the College football WikiProject newsletter! I hope that you're enjoying regular updates about the goings on of college football on Wikipedia, but if not, feel free to add your name to the "no delivery" section on the newsletter signup page.

I encourage everyone to make regular visits to the College Football Portal and perhaps make it your Wikipedia entry page instead of using the Main Page as your gateway. Nominations for selected articles and pictures are always welcome, and can serve as a great way to show off that new article you just shepherded to Good Article status or the great picture you took the last time you were at a game.

Comments and suggestions on improving the newsletter are always welcome, and help me improve it on a monthly basis. Keep contributing and editing, and don't hesitate to contact me or post on the College Football Wikiproject talk page if you need help or just want someone to look over your article.

Guideline discussion spam in baseball newsletter?

Hi. I assume you are the keeper of the baseball newsletter you've sent me a few times? Do you think it would be possible to include a link about a discussion which is underway at WT:MLB regarding the notability guideline for baseball players? It's my contention not only that the current guideline is flawed, but that the main cause for the flaws is that too few people were involved in its construction to form a quorum. So I'd like as many people as possible to weigh in. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 03:12, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Hey

Yeah, it's been a while. I can still remember my amazement when I first saw you using Huggle. I was like, "How the hell is he faster than ClueBot????!!"

So, what have you been up to? I sometimes see that you had reverted vandalism a few days earlier on a page that I am reverting, and once in a while I see your comments on some random talk page, but that's about it. I miss our furious Huggle battles back in March when there were like 10 people total who had it, and you were lucky if more than one was on at the same time. A lot has changed since those days. A lot.... J.delanoygabsadds 03:16, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

BTW, to actually answer your question, I'm fine. ;-) J.delanoygabsadds 03:17, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
No it's not just you. Vandalism has slowed down somewhat (for now... summer = no bored kids in homeroom. Wait till school goes back in session....) but the big thing is that there are so many people using Huggle it is absolutely insane. While I can still beat most of them (a-hem), there is simply no getting around the fact that there is no way that all the others are reverting nothing. Although I do have to admit that it is good that practically 100% of blatant vandalism and greater than 90% of more subtle vandalism is caught within a few seconds, I did like it better when there weren't so many Hugglers. I don't know why either. Maybe I just liked the knowledge that I was singlehandedly decimating the Forces of Evil™.
And yeah, I'm an admin. It's cool, but I haven't been yelled at for deleting someone's page yet, and I've had +sysop for more that a week. I feel like such a failure. :P Well, maybe not. I blocked someone without any warnings on their talk page, I softblocked an open proxy that someone else had hardblocked, I deleted this page as CSD G11 (No I'm not that dumb - look at the deleted revisions and the deleted contribs of the guy who made the edits that I "neglected" to restore...), and I've protected either three or four pages that someone else had already protected. So, yeah, looking at it closer, I guess I've got this admin-ing stuff down pat. :-) J.delanoygabsadds 03:42, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, god, you don't want to tempt me with the "delete" button. I made this edit when there were still three days left in my RFA :-) And yes, I have clicked the "delete" button on the Main Page, the Sandbox, and ANI. (It won't let me, although I've heard rumors that there is a way around the 5000 revisions thingy. I also heard that you could irreparably destroy Wikipedia with the same action, so I don't think this is a good topic to continue.....)
I know what you mean. There are so many things we can't do that it's just as well we can't do. Then there are the things we can do... For example, [1].
From Wikipedia:Administrators: "[An administrator is someone who is] familiar with and respects Wikipedia policy, and who has gained the trust of the community. [...] Users seeking help will often turn to an administrator for advice and information.". Hah! J.delanoygabsadds 04:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Hell, yeah! I personally like "nuke this page" sooo much better than "delete". And "protect" should be "erect forcefield". Hmm, what should "block" be? J.delanoygabsadds 04:38, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

← Ha, definitely. "Crush by elephant". That's actually pretty creative. What I really like is that it stayed there for more than 10 hours. It stinks that "Pwn user" didn't last for longer than one minute, 'cause that was pretty good too. I guess some people have no sense of humor... J.delanoygabsadds 04:46, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

My thing is, it would be one thing if we were messing around with things that everyone can see, (like changing the "history" tab to "past crappy versions" or something) but all the ANI threads you see involve parts of the interface that nobody other than admins can see, so what difference does it make? Why would you block someone when they're just having a little harmless fun on April Fools Day? It's not like they're running around on a mass delete/block/protect spree. J.delanoygabsadds 04:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

AWB

You gave AWB rights to a user, DougsTech, who I think is being careless with it. His stated concern is anti-vandalism, but his actual concern seems to be to rack up as many edits as he can. He's amassed a staggering number in his 4 months and 9 days as a Wikipedian. He seems to be charging at everything like a bull at a gate. Would it be possible to review his use of AWB, please? Mr Barndoor (talk) 16:32, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Shad Gaspard

Hi, On Shads myspace and in an interview on wwe .com he calls his finishing move THUGNIFICENCE. It’s just a modified big mans STO. It’s spelled different than the character name on the Boondocks, so it must have no connection, and just be plain street slang. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.31.128.225 (talk) 15:13, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Also he also states in an interview with wwe magazine and on his myspace that he has 2first names, 2 middle names and three last names “Shad Chad Javair Jesus Romen Chittick Gaspard”. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.31.128.225 (talk) 15:16, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Sure. I stopped using it a few minutes ago but I don't mind ;)   jj137 (talk) 16:06, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Done If it runs slower, then revert me. I made it cache 5 pages ahead of time rather than just 2. You would not believe how much that increases the speed. (5 is the max. Yes, I tried more; it doesn't work...) Do you want me to mess around some more? J.delanoygabsadds 16:10, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Hah, go right ahead. And I just tried it out again... wow, it took about 1 second to notice the difference. :)   jj137 (talk) 16:12, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
OK, done with that too. Now you will be able to revert vandalism in namespaces other than the mainspace. Please be careful, if you start making mistakes and it comes out that I showed you how to make Huggle scan other namespaces, I know at least one person who will take my head off. J.delanoygabsadds 16:15, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Huggle v. Twinkle

Am I the only one that still uses Twinkle? :) Burner0718 Jibba Jabba! 21:59, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

No, I've seen a bunch of people use it. For reverting vandalism though, Huggle is definitely faster, which is why I guess most people use it now.   jj137 (talk) 22:00, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

True, it comes pretty close. I guess Huggle is easy because with one click it will revert and warn within about 2 seconds. (And it is much easier to find vandalism...) Unless you just prefer Twinkle, I would at least give Huggle a try ;)   jj137 (talk) 00:24, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Whacking with a wet trout or trouting is a common practice on Wikipedia when experienced editors slip up and make a silly mistake. It, along with sentencing to the village stocks, is used to resolve one-off instances of seemingly silly behavior amongst normally constructive community members, as opposed to long term patterns of disruptive edits, which earn warnings and blocks.

Example

Whack!
The above is a WikiTrout (Oncorhynchus macrowikipediensis), used to make subtle adjustments to the clue levels of experienced Wikipedians.
To whack a user with a wet trout, simply place {{trout}} on their talk page.

Per what you just said on Gtalk. Take that! :P

My edit counter

I fixed the problem you reported (and another place where I used query.php). I think there are other parts of the script that have stopped working over time; I haven't really looked into the situation that much, though, and probably won't have time to at the moment. --ais523 16:16, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

That's fine. Thanks for helping, though.   jj137 (talk) 23:23, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

I removed the compromise section off the talk page below the spam section. I felt like when I woke up tomorrow it'd be another repeat of the section above it.
That was fun lol. Brought back good memories of last year. I'm gonna go chill. Later. HPJoker Leave me a message 00:03, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Chad

No problem, too much drama for my liking anyways. All I wanted was to wait, so protection will definitely do that! :) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 20:21, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah Im fine with it, I would have protected it myself, but that would have opened up all kinds of dramaz! ;) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 20:24, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Haha, you know I think the only person in the NFL that I would expect to do something like this would be Chad. I am still asking myself why Favre had to do his whole thing. I am waiting for him to retire so his page will calm down and can be improved. NFL players these days... jeez :) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 20:31, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Around the World, update...

We've been hard at work behind the scenes. We can't seem to get the trophy right, but we'll get there. And the set of pages need one more section completed before they can be moved to article space...

... that's right! We're almost ready to move the whole set into the live encyclopedia. One page for every country of the world!

We're currently developing the standard (by example) for these outlines, they're overall format and what they should look like.

One page that is nearly complete and built to the current standard is List of basic Thailand topics. Please take a look, and help us put the finishing touches on it if you have the time. It will be an example (along with List of basic Japan topics and List of basic France topics) for those working on the rest of the lists, and therefore is pretty important.

Any help or input you could provide would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

The College football WikiProject Newsletter
Issue X - September 2008
Project news
  • Two college football articles are featured article candidates and are looking for comments, criticism, and/or your support. Be sure to visit 2007 USC Trojans football team and 2005 Sugar Bowl to put in a few words.
  • The 2008-2009 college football season has kicked off, and it's time to kick into full gear! Teams ranked in the top 25 should have a single-season page or at the very least a separate football page. Rankings pages and the overall season page should be kept updated, as should the pages of players of note.
  • Heading out to a football game? Be sure to carry a camera and get pictures of players, teams, stadiums, and all the action and pageantry of college football. An excellent guide to taking pictures for WP:CFB can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Images. Even if you don't think a photo can be immediately used for an article, try uploading it to Wikimedia Commons so future article authors can use it.

Well, you do have a good point, it basically only led to more wikidrama and more edit wars (and you predicted it...). I don't know if I'd call it spam, but either way, it's completely pointless. jj137 (talk) 00:58, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

The House Band

I wondered when someone might put the unreferenced tag on this article, although I feel it's probably unhelpful. Fact is, there's not much recorded about the band, so I mainly quote from an email exchange I had with with Chris Parkinson, one of the band's former members. Your welcome to view the email if you wish, if that would help.

Drongo (talk) 16:24, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't matter whether or not it's unhelpful, it's the fact that there aren't any references on the page that matters.   jj137 (talk) 21:07, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

I issued him three warnings for the three different pages he vandalized. I did not report him to the AIV, but I was about to report him if he vandalized any article again after the only warning. But he is already blocked. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 18:29, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't sure about it. (and I misread the AIV report.) Bad mistake on my part.   jj137 (talk) 18:32, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Please clarify

CyHyoung (talk) 18:49, 6 September 2008 (UTC) Could you please explain what defines a noteworthy person. There are equivalently "noteworthy" violists already listed on Wiki. Please see below http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primrose_International_Viola_Competition

This violist has won the first prize at the 08 Primrose Competition and numerous other viola competitions. Murrath is quite well known in his area. It's odd that he is considered not noteworthy when the following less well-known second prize winners have their own Wiki pages:(David Aaron Carpenter, David Kim, Catherine Basrak, etc).

Could you explain.

WP:BIO should explain everything.   jj137 (talk) 19:06, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

08 Red Sox Season

Why did you delete an entire paragraph in the 2008 Red Sox Season article? Calling it random is totally POV. Please don't delete other editors contributions without first discussing it on the talk page. Please revert your edit. Faethon Ghost (talk) 17:14, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Because it was completely out of place and didn't even make sense in the context of the article. And no, Wikipedia isn't a sandbox where anyone can just come and add whatever they want and leave it unremoved. And no, it wasn't POV, and no, I'm not going to revert myself unless someone can give me a good reason it should stay there.   jj137 (talk) 18:11, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
A good reason is that Wikipedia's aim is to be a summary of all human knowledge. Please clean up the paragraph you deleted and reinsert it. Thanks. Faethon Ghost (talk) 05:02, 7 September 2008 (UTC) 00:25, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
No, that isn't a good reason. Look at some of our featured articles. Are they just a large mass of information? Of course not, there is always more info that can added, but we choose quality over quantity. Also, if you're just trying to trick me by not logging in, I'm not falling for it.   jj137 (talk) 00:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
I wasn't trying to trick you, just forgot to log in. The 2008 Red Sox Season article is weak compared to the 2008 Yankees Season article. The former has a breakdown of each month and I believe the editor who put the info about opening day on there was trying to get it going for the Red Sox article. Someone who is part of the Red Sox Wikipedia project should want more info in there, not less. The article is a skeleton and when someone tried to put some meat on it's bones you tore it right back off. I fail to see your motivation. Faethon Ghost (talk) 05:02, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Firstly, I apologize for thinking you were trying to "trick me" (there's never a way to be sure). Like I've already said, simply because articles are lacking content does not mean anything can be placed there; if we had a paragraph for all 162 games, the page would probably be so long it would freeze everyone's computer upon loading. I know the guy was just trying to help, but read through it again -- it doesn't sound anything like something written for an encyclopedia, but instead something more suited for a play-by-play analysis, or something like that. Sure, it would be great it we could get some sort of month-by-month summary in the Regular Season section (I think this article is a pretty good example), but a seemingly random paragraph describing the opening day game towards the beginning of the article is not a good idea. If you wanted to get into even more detail, it is written in short, choppy sentences and uses three letter team abbreviations, which we almost never do. Also, yes, I did found the Red Sox WikiProject, but in no way would I ever edit an article to make it worse (that wouldn't make sense). I'm not trying to tear the meat off the bone, as you describe it, I'm just trying to keep our articles from getting overly messy.   jj137 (talk) 20:57, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the thoughtful response. I appreciate your point of view and now I better understand your motivation. I will try to make a month by month summary of the season before it ends. Only 1 and a half games back now! Faethon Ghost (talk) 02:53, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
I know! We still have time to get first :) Hopefully I didn't come across as angry, I was just trying to explain my point of view. Good luck with the summary.   jj137 (talk) 21:55, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
