Ed Walker

I've noticed you've done allot work on the Ed Walker article. Found it rather interesting, I know Ed Walker, or 'Uncle Ed' as he's commonly referred to by friends. Although his hay day in radio was a bit before I can remember, too much synthetic (and quite a bit of organic) reality back in the 80s and 90s has curbed any memories of childhood lol..But anyway, I used to talk with him quite regularly when I lived in Maryland and was active on Ham Radio.. Heck, he even did some corny liners for me when I had my HF station going AM of course! Last I heard from him he was on the board of directors for the Radio and Television Museum in Bowie, Maryland. As far as I know he's still living in Bethesda. Small world.. Everybody loves Uncle Ed! :)

Arizona Memorial

Good pont about original research, and I guess that's why somebody pulled it. Anyway, regarding time on the memorial, the guide asked everyone to leave when the next boat came in. Apparently the rapid exhaustion of tickets that day (gone by 11 AM) encouraged a fast turnaround. I was there just after Christmas but they told me running out of tickets early was becoming routine.

That made me smile

And chuckle a bit. I saw your comment on WP:NAR, and the fact that you are devoted enough to use a blackberry for editing Wikipedia, made me smile. Certainly don't take offense at this, just think about how silly it might seem to the novice user, and smile. I went to Wikipedia and it said I had a message from you (though I wasn't logged in). It took me to the talk page for an ip address (I would look the block up to see if it was me, but can't figure out how to get back to that page once I logged in). It had a welcome comment from you noting to sign talk pages and explaining how (thanks, by the way!) I headed over here to see what's up and see if I could figure out how to work the talk page system correctly (I don't think I've ever used it). Should I have edit summaries for talk page entries? Using edit summaries is strongly recommended on article edits, and most editors usually put a brief word or two in the edit summary for a Talk page message, too. It was created and edited by me from an image that was on the internet not copyrighted. What kind of rationale needs to be placed on the image page that would save it from deletion? Sorry for using the cryptic acronym, "CV" is shorthand for copyright violation. Whoever took the original photo is the copyright holder, and only they can release it to the public domain or license its use on websites. A subsequent edit would be a "derivative" which is still subject to the same copyright restrictions.

As a non-free image, it could be used as Fair Use on Wikipedia, but only on an article about Burns' book, Dreyfus-a family affair (which Wikipedia doesn't have at present). A Fair Use image can't be used to illustrate a biography about a living person, however.JGHowes talk - 03:10, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Re User warning to IP71.187.39.237

Hi Boris,

Just thought I'd drop by to say I agree with your reverting this anon. IP's edit to the John Wilkes Booth Lead. No question it was poorly worded and out of place. I was about to revert his edit myself when you beat me to it. The JWB article seems to attract a high level of vandalism and periodically we have to Semi-Protect it. But it seems to me that IP71.187.39.237 may have made a "good faith", if poorly done, edit. Assuming good faith (see assume good faith), a Level 4 Warning is a tad harsh, if it was a first time contributor (multiple users could be using that IP address, after all). My two cents ... I disagree; the user was previously warned three times, level 1, level 2, level 3, so it is difficult to assume good faith after 3 warning to stop vandalizing. You're absolutely right, I went back and looked at IP71.187.39.237's other 3 recent edits and clearly it's a blatant vandal. The JWB edit, by itself, wasn't so obvious. Bermuda Airport

Hi, I was just fiddling a bit with the airport page and I was wondering whether you'd agree to it being moved officially to L.F. Wade International Airport and having Bermuda International Airport and Bermuda Airport be the redirects. As far as I can tell this is now the "official" name of the airport (according to the airport's main page and various other sites) and not just a secondary name as it's put now. Spin and Marty

With your addition of the cover DVD image to the Spin and Marty article, would you say the black and white one is now superfluous? Or does it add to the reader's understanding, by virtue of being in black and white and the explanation about the introductory segment? I just wrote (or upgraded, I forget which) my FUR for the black and white one over the weekend, but I won't be crushed if only the color one is allowed to stand. Ogden Nash and Lou Gehrig

I like it. It assumes that Baseball Almanac has it right, of course. But it's a verifiable reference. And the format is fine. You might get somebody arguing about the colors or something like that. The "Z" entry could maybe be put at the Baseball Hall of Fame article, as it's a good summing up of the game's great players. I take it you're quite familiar with the subject (I am not) and am wondering if you'd care to comment on the edit recently made to whippoorwill regarding the bird's "97% decline since 1983": this appears to be contradicted by its IUCN status of "Least concern". I'm just a backyard naturalist, I can't really comment on the studies. I have observed that in north Georgia we stopped hearing whippoorwills altogether in the mid-80's, and the chuck-will's became vanishingly rare in the 90's. But that's just anecdotal observation. Ocean Grove

I had some quesions:

In the “Today” section of the current Ocean Grove article, it states:

“Beginning in the 1990s and continuing to the present, Ocean Grove has experienced a dramatic increase in property values.” This has not been the case since early last year. Anyone reading a newspaper is aware of real estate values declining. And they began declining in Ocean Grove around this time, also (as they did throughout much of NJ). Shouldn’t this be updated to reflect this?

In the same section it also states:

“There has been a considerable revival in the fortunes of the town, leading to a much less depressed community and the restoration of older hotel structures, many of which had deteriorated into Single Room Occupancy ("SRO") quarters.” Isn’t the phrase “a much less depressed community” opinion? I can find no article or reliable reference that makes or confirms that statement. It’s not in the article listed as a reference for the paragraph that follows this one on the Ocean Grove page (Michelle Sahn, "New life at old hotel site", Asbury Park Press, March 23, 2006). Therefore shouldn’t that statement be eliminated, as it’s opinion and not verifiable?

I would like to add the following to the site, but would like your opinion first:

To many “Grovers”, the destruction of the Ocean Grove Fishing Pier and boardwalk by the northeast winter storm of 1992, was devastating (Footnote to be added referencing A POINT OF PRIDE SWEPT OFF BY STORM - OCEAN GROVE LOST MORE THAN TIMBER. THE PIER WAS PART OF ITS LIFE. Source: William R. Macklin, Published December 14, 1992, Page S01, Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA)) With the town's spirits at an all time low, late one night two friends, Carol and Bob, climbed a 20' high piling and erected a dummy of a fisherman. Named "Ralph", an acronym for Rising Above the Long Pier of Hope, he immediately became a local favorite as he smiled down at beachgoers, and helped buoy the town’s spirits. This was demonstrated later that summer, when his image was used on T-Shirts by The Ocean Grove Fishing Club to help raise funds to rebuild the town’s century old, landmark, fishing pier (photo of t-shirt to be included). When the pier was rebuilt the following year, Ralph was given a permanent perch upon which to sit...and to this day he can be seen sitting there (photo). As an indication of his inspiration and popularity, in 2002, ten years after he was erected, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association honored Ralph by making him the first fictional character to ever appear on the town’s summer beach badge (photo of beach badge to be included). yes, EUG sent me a letter back in 1975 when I asked for a photo for a newspaper column I was writing as well as our OA Lodge newsletter. Bio guideline question

I don't know of any particular guideline that covers this, but I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of rules for these situations existed. In my experiences, I have written the old name and placed the new name in parentheses. JGHowes, thanks for writing. After considerable debate on discussion pages, a consensus-driven decision was made to establish a consistent dating across aviation articles. The accepted standard now for aviation articles is to have all dates appear as 17 August 2007. This practice has arisen because a number of foreign users had difficulty with reading the other ISO standard 08-17-07 or 17-08-07 formats (which one prevailed in their country?) as well the standard now for academic writing has been established for date, month, year, therefore the "formal" format became a written out date. Unlike some U.S. readers considering the month, date, year as a U.S. standard, it is also used in many other parts of the world and is sometime known as the "popular" style." The use of the new date format also allows for readers who have date preferences established in their browser to read the date in the style that they prefer. It is also a recommended standard in Wiki:Project Aviation because the vast majority of Wikipedia users do not have browser preferences set. As well, having a consistent style of date formating is merely standard practice. Re: New York Times archives

Since late September, all New York Times articles since 1987 have been freely accessible. There are two ways I do it: either I search for the article title in quotes with Google (which will usually bring up the free version of the article), or If I don't know the article title, I change search/restricted/article" in the URL to "gst/abstract.html", press enter, and the URL is automatically converted to the new format if a free version of the article can be found. Re: Camden Yards station

Actually, considering the precedents that we have on other articles where the subject changed names (Electro-Motive Diesel comes to mind as the closest analogy), I'm more inclined to think it should be at "Camden Yards". However, since that location is currently a redirect to the ballpark, it seems to me that the current title is best and the redirect should be changed to a disambig page, but since I'm not in Baltimore, I wouldn't necessarily know which is the more prominent usage of the name. Hi, you just removed information from Benedictus (Song of Zechariah) on the grounds that it was a copyvio -- but it was taken from the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913 which is in the public domain. Thank you for your participation in my recent RfA, which closed successfully. I felt the process was a thorough review of my contributions and my demeanor, and I was very gratified to see how many editors took the time to really see what I'm about and how I can be of help to the project. As a result, some editors changed their views during the discussion, and most expressed specific, detailed points to indicate their opinion (whether it was , , or ).

A number of editors were concerned about my level of experience. I was purposeful in not waiting until a particular benchmark occurred before requesting adminship, because I feel - as many do - that adminship is not a reward and that each case is individual. It is true that I am not the most experienced editor around here, but I appreciate that people dug into my contributions enough to reach the conclusion that I seem to have a clue. Also, the best thing about this particular concern is that experience is something an editor - or administrator - can always get more of, and I'll continue doing that, just as I've been doing. (If I seem a little slow at it, feel free to slap me.)

I am a strong believer in the concept that this project is all about the content, and I'm looking forward to contributing wherever I can. Please let me know if I can be of any help. In the meantime, I'm off to school...

Thanks for your note. I sort of had the assumption for the second reason of users who might not be clear on RS and offered something like that in good faith. And the content of the edit wasn't, it seems to me, prima facie libelous (what church she says she was saved in? How would that be defamatory? Or is there a nuance I'm missing?)

And that bit of WP:BLP refers to unsourced, as in no source whatsoever, potentially libelous information. If he had reverted that I might have shortened the block. A user who posts a source for some libelous information is entitled to have some discussion of the source's reliability before it's removed (unless they're doing so to be disruptive in some way).

JGHowes, I noticed your recent comment at RFA. Allow me to clarify: I don't have an admitted involvement with offsite monitoring of Wikipedia. Could it have been my mention about offsite message boards in question 15 that led to this conjecture? I'm not involved with such boards, but I know they exist, and when an editor or article appears to be under coordinated attack I sometimes check those boards to see what is happening. Picture deletion

Hi, why did you delete the picture for the Magibon article? It was made from a screenshot of a Youtube video and properly marked as fair use. Besides, the person in this picture was informed by me and had no objections. The Magibon article has currently enough problems with constant vandalism, so it is very sad to see that it is even vandalized by registered Wikipedians who delete pictures without sufficient cause. --Firithfenion (talk) 09:33, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Reply: Image:Magibonscreenshot.jpg was proposed for deletion by another editor on September 25 on the grounds that it was non-compliant with Wikipedia's policy regarding use of non-free images. WP:NONFREE allows for fair use only if there's "No free equivalent. Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose". In the case of living persons, replacement by a free image is possible, hence, non-free images of a living person may generally not be used in Wikipedia articles about a living person.

An image proposed for deletion on this basis may be deleted 48 hours after it's tagged. However, in fairness to you, I see that you were not notified on your Talk page of its proposed deletion by the editor making the proposal, to have the opportunity to contest the deletion by adding a {{hangon}} tag.

Please explain how and why an exception should be made for this non-free image, and I'll be happy to consider restoring it. If the person who has the copyright on the picture is willing to release it to the public domain (not just Wikipedia) — making it a free image — this can be done by email, just let me know and I'll further advise. Or, if you wish to contest the deletion, you may do so at Deletion review. Reply:Thanks for the answer. I am not a lawyer and not yet an expert with this licensing stuff. It seems to be a kind of rocket science to upload a picture on Wikipedia. I agree, that if someone has a free picture my fair-use picture could be removed or replaced but there isnt one available. I have asked Magibon via mail to send me one of her official pictures to make it public domain. However, she was worried to do so, because she is in negotiation with Japanese modelling agencies and she is worried that there might be problems if she gives one of her pictures as public domain, therefore I suggested this compromise (to make a screenshot and use it under fair use) and Magibon agreed. I have put a lot of work in this article but instead of any kind of help, it seems to me that everyone tries to prevent this article. • Wikipedia is a free-content project and use of non-free images is limited to respect the ownership of copyright holders. As such, our guidelines don't allow fair use of a non-free image in a biography about a living person, because it is presumed that someone, somewhere (in Pennsylvania?) can photograph the person. That is why screenshots of living movie and TV actors are not allowed in their Wikipedia biographies. On the other hand, in an article about a particular film, a fair use screenshot may be permitted to identify and provide critical commentary about that film. This appears to be a biography, so fair use of the YouTube screenshot is not permitted. In an article about the website itself, however, then arguably a {{Web rationale}} could be used for a screenshot for identification and critical commentary relating to the website in question.  JGHowes ^talk 14:31, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Baltimore and Ohio logo

I see that another editor is trying to get rid of Image:Bologo.gif.

While I suspect that you are correct and the other editor is wrong, it might be easier to replace all the instances of Image:Bologo.gif (including those that the other editor removed) with Image:Baltimore and Ohio Herald.png. - Eastmain (talk) 20:17, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Bermuda's Climate

I'm doing nothing wrong. I am simply stating that according to the Koppen system, Bermuda's climate is tropical. In fact, it is not, as the Bermuda government's own website and others such as the reference you deleted state – it is sub-tropical. I have restored the deleted reference and added a second one for good measure. I was referring to the reinsertion of redacted passwords to protected websites, after others had removed them. Passwords, when used per se, are copyrighted under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act since passwords are an accepted form of protection of copyrighted work. The protected website contains protected content which, by definition, the content owner has not elected to disseminate publicly. Distribution of the access credentials needed to impersonate your way onto the site (the password) would facilitate the violation of the copyright of the protected content. Patient - or forgetful. No worries. It's not a high priority. Once someone publishes Roger's autobiography, we'll have a lot of interesting material. As I understand it, he was convicted of tax evasion. The movies "Point Break" and "Dropzone" were likely inspired by Roger's deeds. They were authored by one of Roger's arch competitors. Bakker made a lasting impression on Roger, and Roger left prison an ordained minister. As always, of course, reliable sources require discipline and patience. JWB Comment

I left a comment on the talk page on JWB. I just wanted to cut and paste it here as well, since it seems to be a bit lost in all of the other confusion on the page. It is: Thank You JGHowes. I see your point based on the proper quote from an actual wikipedia policy. It is nice not to be talked down to all of the time. In reading the policy that you have cited, all it says is that the theory is notable, but says nothing about the original source of the theory. Based on my interpretation of that policy, the Baltimore Sun citation is fine, but based on the idea that those three authors do not have a reputation for fact-finding and accuracy, they are in fact not in accordance with policy. Or does anyone think that the authors are reputable? As in fact, the article did pass GA last year with the section, is it not possible that the citations were meerly overlooked? I'm just wondering how the policy that I have cited, works with the part of the policy that you have cited? All I am asking is that we look at the citations in question and determine whether or not they are notable based on the policy that I have already cited. Could the section not be rewritten and retitled so as to keep in occordance with policy? I have suggestions in mind, and have wanted to reword it for some time, but anytime I do anything on this page it gets reverted, even edits that have nothing to do with the discussion

I also have a few other questions that perhaps you may be able to clarify for me.

1. How is it that I am always wrong when I place a tag, but Arcayne is always right when he removes it?

   • Well, I've never said you're "always wrong", but it is part of the WP:BRD process by which we operate, in that the editor changing the status quo frequently finds himself on the defensive if there's a longstanding consensus to the contrary. Once something's reverted, it's preferable to argue it on the Talk page rather than repeatedly re-reverting (i.e., "edit warring")

2. Why does it need to be his tag, while my tag was just as acceptable?

   • Not following you on this one, but no one WP:OWNs a Wikipedia article.

3. How is the uncited information about the number of copies of the book sold OK? Arcayne removed my tag of that information?

   • I added hidden text in the article explaining the source after he removed the tag; also commented in the Edit Summary (which most veteran editors use when a lengthy Talk page explanation is deemed to be unnecessary). It is good practice to check the Article History to see what changes have been made, by whom, and why.

4. How are Unschool and I always 100% wrong while while both of you are always 100% right? Doesn't our interpretation of policy mean anything?

   • No, I don't think that, and it was in the spirit of compromise that I had offered some proposals for everyone's consideration.

5. Is there any reason to think that I am not leaving comments in good faith, since Arcayne has tried just about everything he can to tear me down?

   • Speaking for myself, I WP:AGF, unless proven conclusively otherwise.

6. Have you read any of the citations? Do you know what they actually say?

   • I have not read Bates, but do have The Lincoln Conspiracy book. I also have in my personal library the lengthy 1931 Baltimore Sun newspaper article debunking Bates. In that connection, it should be noted that the "Booth escape" section is not actually quoting from Bates as a reliable source; instead, it says "In 1908, Finis L. Bates wrote Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth, contending that a Booth look-alike was mistakenly killed at the Garrett farm while Booth eluded his pursuers. Booth, said Bates, assumed the pseudonym 'John St. Helen' and died in 1903 at Enid, Oklahoma, after making a deathbed confession that he was the fugitive assassin." That is my paraphrase of what the 1931 Baltimore Sun article said, so the cited source is the Sun, not Bates.

I am asking these questions in an attempt to clarify and I am in no way looking to move the discussion to your talk page, but I just wanted you to know how I have been seeing things. Based on Arcayne's edit history, he frequently talks down to other editors and usually starts his comments with Your wrong, or Incorrect. He just says things like You are in the minority or you are the only one who wants this, when it is clear from the discussion that what he is saying is not true. Not just to me, but to others as well. Again I am not attempting to move the discussion to your page, I just wanted someone else to see it from my angle for once. One last comment. If I rewrite the section, and retitle it, could I cut and paste it here for you to look at before I place it on the page? No, you have deleted reliable sources cited in articles which contradict your own novel conclusions as I explained above and disruptively edited several articles despite a number of objections. Well, I looked for a way to change a username, and couldn't find a way. The articles I have edited were all good faith edits. Now, I know calling Bermuda a tropical climate is a little far-fetched, although arguable, so I'll leave that page alone, but on most of my other edits, I have legitimate reasons. You still have no right to accuse me of anything wrong, when I have only done good faith edits. And how am I to blame for deleting reliable cited sources, when other users mercilessly delete mine??? I'm no more at fault than they are. In a dispute, the person who first edits the article is not automatically the one to blame. You have not, and connot, provide any reliable source to verify that "Charles" is his middle name. Re: Assessments

While I'm not sure if I agree that the article is B-class, he is certainly allowed to add them. Articles don't have to be put at assessment requests to get an assessment. Though if you think those articles are C rather than B, you can change them. They seem borderline to me. Wizardman 23:28, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
