Automated message to bot owners edit

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 02:48, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies edit

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 20:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

India Demographics edit

Because of India's rich diversity, no one image can represent all of India's one billion people. That is why I propose selecting a new demographics image every three months. This would allow for a regional balance and would show India as a whole. Many people have agreed that this is the only way to represent India's rich and varied diversity. Since you have voted for a change in the demographics section, I wanted to update you on this proposal. I would love to hear your comments on talk:India. Thanks so much. Have a great day!

a new library on practical knowledge edit

Good evening Ganesh

I was in Madurai last month and I read an article about you in the press. I thought you might be interested by the project we launched earlier this year: www.howtopedia.org. It is a collaborative platform for practical knowledge and simple technologies, i.e. technologies that require no complex machine, that are easily explainable and usable by individuals or small communities for a sustainable and ecological future.
The idea is to create an empowering documentation for individuals and organisations who are trying to set up projects.
We are starting to collaborate with small organisations in India, Africa and South America. Maybe do you have ideas how to let the community grow around this project!
Hoping that you will find some interest in the project,
All the best for yours,

Retirement edit

Hi Ganesh! Thank you for writing; it is nice indeed to hear from you. I had a great time working with you and all the others at the Indian Cinema Wikiproject. Great team work, lovely folks. Being passionate about films, it gave me great satisfaction to contribute what I could to film articles, such as French film articles, but especially those pertaining to Indian films. I think many South Indian films are particularly very good, and are as good, if not better (definitely more heartfelt, that's for sure) than Western ones. You have been very helpful to me, when I wanted to build tables and all that. But I'll have to move on now as the real world has caught up with me. Keep up the passion for contributing to India-related articles, and all the very best to you in all that you do. Regards, AppleJuggler 11:05, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Thanks for the research on mega and metropolitan cities. Now the task becomes a little bit tough. AWB for ta WP edit

Hi Ganesh, I came across one of your comments in ta WP mentioning that AWB can be used for spelling and grammar fixes for ta WP also.. Can you let me know how that can be done? --Madhu 14:47, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I have used AWB for en WP for general wikification and fixing typos. I wanted to know if we could use AWB for spelling/grammar fixes for Tamil. --Madhu 16:31, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
The problem is I don't know how to do it at all! :( For en WP, AWB uses RegexTypofix and loads a list of typos, so I haven't really started typo-fixing by searching for a particular typo.. for Tamil, however, I am clueless. --Madhu 17:34, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think I am not being specific enough here. I was actually able to login to ta WP and make some changes also... like removing multiple wikilinks, tagging pages etc. But I have no idea how to use AWB to check for spelling errors in ta WP. Must I search for words with 'incorrect' spellings or smth..? --Madhu 17:44, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007 edit

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([2]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [3]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

Inset coords edit

Until the mercator svg state maps are drawn, there are two options:

  • set inset_map_default = yes (bypasses to Nichalp's blank mercator map)
  • set inset_map_marker = no (hides the inset map's pog)

If the pog is still off, you can ask Planemad about refining the map boundary coords used in the pog positioning formula. Thanks. Saravask 18:06, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Recreating the maps in mecrator projection is way too much work. I think making modification to the locator code makes much more sense. I will discuss this with saravask -- PlaneMad|YakYak 15:52, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I now feel that showing the locator dot on the inset map is not needed. It unnedingly complicates things and does not add much. An inset map of the highlighted state seem more than sufficient. What do you think-- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:37, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

But, other than using a much larger locator dot that blurs at its edges, using locator markers shaped like the disricts themselves, or repeatedly overlaying small dots (stippling) to create the impression of a shaded district, I don't know how to do it. Maybe someone at WP:VP/T or WT:INWNB would know. Cheers. Saravask 00:46, 14 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: support edit

Hi. I don't know what you mean. What would I need to do to the template? Thanks. Saravask 03:01, 14 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Was {{Infobox_Indian_Jurisdiction/translations}} (see {{Infobox_Indian_Jurisdiction/Sandbox}} for example) along the lines of what you're looking for? Since the parameter names may also be different, we'd also need an interface template (like {{Citation}}, vs {{Citation/core}}) to handle all the alternates. Thanks. Saravask 04:54, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. Thanks. If you don't mind, I'll move translations2 -> translations. Saravask 21:11, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

When no density is proveded, the box auto-fills it from the pop and area. That's why there can be no punctuation in those numbers. Also, if we want to format those in terms of lakhs and crores instead of thousands and millions, making the switch is much easier when commas are not manually inserted by users. News articles? edit

I have been looking for news article links but I don't think anybody in this country is working on that. Can you suggest where I can get the links, say for the existing items in the Portal:India news highlights? Regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 15:07, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Title issue edit

In the article: Indian Armed Forces, I was wondering if the "A" of Armed and "F" of Forces should be capitalized or not (as per Manual of Style)? Thanks. Effer 21:27, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Portal:Current events/India edit

Thanks for your quick response. I will take a little more of your time. For a few days now, I have been doing the news in the Portal:Current events/India. Thereafter I am doing the Highlights in the same portal. These Highlights get automatically reflected in Portal:India. The news in the date-wise columns carries the news source. Earlier, I was also using the news source in the Highlights columns. However, I noticed that the Headlines in Portal:Current events do not have any news source, presumably because the details are already there in the date-wise news columns. These Headlines get reflected on the Main Page. On observing this, I have been following the present practice. Now, what would you like me to do – follow the Portal:Current events and Main Page style or deviate from it and add the source? Adding the source, isn’t much of a job because it is already there in the datewise news columns of Portal:Current events/India. Regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 02:04, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your response. The problem I am facing with the news highlights is that there is hardly any news stories specially developed by Wikipedians in India. Therefore, the news really does not lead any where. I am connecting it to some relevant article but these are not really news stories. Therefore, I was thinking whether we should deviate from Portal:Current events style and link it to the media. Please give it a second thought. -- P.K.Niyogi 05:41, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Map coordinates edit

Hi! I've used the template Template:Infobox Historic building for Watson's Hotel. Would you know why the locator dot is off base? the error is in the longitude. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:42, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

clickable multi locator map edit

Ive been working on a code to make route locator maps much more easier to create. See Grand Southern Trunk Road for an example of what ive been able to make. To be able to replicate this i need a database of coordinates of Indian cities that need to be added {{IN/C}}. Would ganeshbot be able to forage the coordinates from places from List_of_National_Highways_in_India and convert it into the required format? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 09:27, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

My thanks to Ganeshbot and its master. Ive hired Saravasak to help with the template (the code is giving me headaches). Lets hope this idea can be practically implemented as it has quite a few issues that needs ironing out. Btw ive noticed quite a few articles that have incorect coordinates, are these added automatically by your bot? The errors are showing up where the state locator maps are in use. Ive coorected quite a few places in Kl, TN and Punjab the last week -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:36, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Karnataka-geo-stub edit

Hello Ganesh,
I couldn't understand why you removed the stub-templates category for {{Karnataka-geo-stub}} in this edit. The edit summary says, "rm self-reference", I am not sure what is self referencing here. Thanks, - KNM Talk 06:10, 23 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing to WP:SELF, but the categorization in that template for Category:WikiProject Karnataka stub templates is not self-referencing. The categorization done is only for the template, and not for all the stubs to which this template is transcluded. This was done by using <noinclude> tag.
Also, while I was creating the category Category:WikiProject Karnataka stub templates, I considered Category:WikiProject India stub templates and Category:WikiProject India templates as the precedents. Please let me know if I am missing something here. - KNM Talk 06:33, 23 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Move of List of India-related topics edit

Hello. I recently moved the article List of India-related topics to a subpage of WikiProject India, Wikipedia:WikiProject India/List of India-related topics. I think now that my move may have been premature. Given that the consensus at the AfD is overwhelmingly to keep the lists, do you think it would be a good idea to move the list back to the article mainspace? I bring up the question because ... well, there is no reason to single out the Indian list for projectification while all the others remain in the mainspace. Please let me know. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 06:03, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re; autocats edit

I must disagree. They're currently optional (use |autocat = no). But we should maximise their use, since they help standardise organisation of articles. For example, I've found suburb articles (which are far outside their metros) manually placed in neighborhood cats (and vice versa), and some cat names are not standardised (Category:Chennai suburbs and Category:Suburbs of Mumbai). The WP:IAP infobox organises Australian articles in a similar way. Thanks. Saravask 01:49, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
BTW, please see {{Infobox_Indian_Jurisdiction/interface}} for a preliminary model. In the Tamil wiki, you'ld replace the right-hand English variable names with the Tamil equivalents. There are some issues to be worked out, though. Saravask 02:03, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re edit

Ganesh, it looks OK to me. BTW, IMO we should try and consolidate as many of the chooser templates into one page ({{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/Parameters}} or something) so that porting the template to other wikis and keeping track of vandalism or bad edits does not become a nightmare. Regards. Saravask 03:49, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Performance edit

PlaneMad pointed out that the load times for articles using WP:IIJ and {{IN}} have increased. Please see our talk pages. I think that the captions might be causing some of this--several dozen labels need to be transcluded instead of coded raw. I updated {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/Core}} and {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/Interface}} (which still use transcluded captions). If you create a captioned version of {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/Parameters}} (do to it what you did here), then those three templates could be ported to other wikis. After this, I don't think that any major new features will be added to IIJ, so IMO there wouldn't be much need to make the code portable. Another option is to write a Perl script to interconvert between hard-coded and transcluded caption versions of IIJ. That way, if you needed to port the template, you just run the script to get transcluded captions, and we wouldn't take the performance hit. Please let me know what you think. Abt Tamil input system edit

I learned that you wanted to have the phonetic input system in Tamil from Ragibji's page. I had written to Tamil wikipedia about Tamil input system at the same time I wrote to Bangla. The ambassador to Nepal Bhasa from Tamil is Natkeeran. I had informed him as well. Anyway, I had developed a transliteration code for Tamil at new:Translitta.js by directly transliterating the original code in Devnagari. Please modify it and incorporate the code in monobook.js. Also, please notify the people at Kannada wikipedia about this system as they are the only ones who havent responded to the Phonetic input suggestions till date. Thanks. --Eukesh 21:49, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Collaboration on Karnataka WikiProject edit

Hello Ganesh,
I see that you have listed yourself as one of the participants of WikiProject Karnataka. I request you to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Karnataka/Collaboration and its discussion page. Please feel free to make the necessary changes/additions in the collaboration page, as most of the other participants seem to be relatively new to this. Also, your inputs in the discussion page are much appreciated. Thank you - KNM Talk 07:57, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Script edit

So, did the phonetic script work for Tamil wiki?

Do you have any other bot scripts? I'm thinking about writing one for enriching the chemical elements stuff -- found a csv db for 110 elements. Also, I got some other dbs for national health data from WHO ... only lacking time to finish the scripts.

BTW, are you based in the bay area? I'll be interning there for summer ... :) --Ragib 04:45, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

'Regulars' edit

'Regulars' should know better than to remove cited content without so much as even enquiring about it on the talk page. Also, I didnt see anybody point out the essay to the 'regular' in question when he splashed some templates on my page as recently as a couple of days ago. Or am I not 'regular' enough? Sarvagnya 01:05, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

And... as an aside.. I'm not really sure I agree with what the essay says. I for one, strongly believe that we shouldnt use templates against newbies. In my opinion, templates can overwhelm newbies very easily. And regulars, being regulars, should have the sense and wisdom to understand why they're being 'templated'. In this case, it was a rank bad case of vandalism and the vandal got what he deserved. That he chose to sulk by trying to call it a content issue and by personally attacking me is a different thing.
