How to get to mainspace?
- User:Robert McClenon, User:SportingFlyer, User:KylieTastic, User:RoySmith, User:Nosebagbear, User:Barkeep49, User:Floquenbeam, User:Girth Summit I am working on these Reconstruction era political leaders. I understand that AfC reviewers don't like these subjects being submitted to AfC. They have made clear that they are horrified that more information isn't included such as birth and death dates which often aren't readily available. I can't help that. I am required to use AfC so what would you like me to do when it's time for them to be moved to mainspace? They are all notable and meet our inclusion criteria. Would one of you like to start them for me? Submit them for me? Review them? I want to avoid drama and avoid any further attacks and lies about me and my work. - User:FloridaArmy - First, I will note that you have pinged eight experienced editors with somewhat different views (which is to be expected with eight different people), and I primarily speak for myself. However, I know that some of us strongly dislike having aspersions cast on our motives and thinking, and I know that some of us will think that you are misrepresenting our views. I can see that you are more likely to get drafts accepted if you are civil to reviewers than if you ask us insulting questions. One suggestion would be a discussion at Village Pump (policy) about what to do when the only information about a person is a one-sentence mention that they served in a state legislature or competed in the Olympic Games, where the amount of information about the person is inadequate. One of the questions, before we address how to get the stubs into mainspace, is whether the stubs should be in mainspace. There is a conflict between an ipso facto notability guideline and the concept of an encyclopedia. I suggest that discussing the conflict would be more useful than insulting the reviewers. - User:FloridaArmy - I will also add that I am one of the reviewers whom you have somewhat more chance of having on your "side" than some of the others you have pinged, if you are civil with me. There are disagreements among editors and reviewers about how to balance general notability guidelines with special notability guidelines. Some reviewers including me think that almost any article that passes a special notability guideline should be accepted. Other reviewers think that the special notability guidelines should be treated as advisory, and that only general notability is definitive. The Reconstruction legislators you have identified are extreme examples of a disconnect between political notability, which they unquestionably pass, and general notability, which they unquestionably fail. So don't cast aspersions on editors who might be on your "side". The worst that could happen would be to resolve the guideline conflict too restrictively. I don't want that. You don't want that. - Hi FloridaArmy, as I have been adding too and accepting several of these already I'm not sure what you mean by "AfC reviewers don't like these subjects". I have spent quite a few hours trawling though old newspapers to do so. The subjects I personally don't like are many BLPs, companies, social medial stars/influencers, most sports. I'm not sure what "political leaders" covers, but IMHO yes the state senators and representative are all notable, if they are lesser roles I'd have to see. Yes I wont accept an article with just 1 reference (but I also wont always decline), as I believe all subjects need some independent verification. Also for minimal content stubs I will look to add extra information before accepting, as I have been doing with the Randolph Cemetery notables we've both been working on. Please note I apply my standards to all topics equally, there are currently submitted articles on subjects I am passionate about but have not accepted due to sourcing issues. If I decline it's because of my interpretation of the guidelines nothing more, not because of a subjects race, gender, sexuality, religion or because I don't like the subject or any of the other things people like to claim is the 'real' reason. I have access to newspaperarchive.com and hope soon to have access to Newspapers.com to help improve on topics like these. I have not been aware of issues you've had about these types of subject, most of the issues that I have noted have been on film related subjects. I had planned and still plan to continue on getting more of the historical political and judicial figures added/accepted and yes I assume most/all of these will have been started by yourself or BD2412. And that's what happens when I submit this type of subject at AfC. Please help me get the knees off my neck. I can't breath. How do you want me to proceed with getting these subjects started, worked on, and reviewed without going through AfC? The AfC process is abusive when it comes to these subjects. - One alternative, if you have a group of individuals sharing a discrete notable characteristic, is to create a list article (e.g., List of Reconstruction era political leaders), and put the available information into the list, with the titles for the individual names redirecting to the list. That way, readers looking for information on any given individual can find out as much as we have at the moment without the article being a stub (or a draft). Information on individuals can be improved and expanded within the context of the list until it is sufficient for that entry in the list to be broken out into a separate article. - Is that what you've done with judges User:BD2412? You've made enormous lists instead of articles for them individually?
- So far these suggestions have mostly amounted to excuses why we don't have to include these notable subjects and refusals to actually help me get them to mainspace without going through a horrific and abusive process that is seeking to eliminate my participation here. I know it's not racism, it's been made abundantly clear to me that racism isn't an issue when it comes to the tremendous drama and attacks I face working on these particular subjects so it must be something else. But again I am asking for help when it comes to notable subjects related to the African Diaspora because the drama that results submitting them through the AfC process is harmful and toxic. - Every state supreme court has a list (e.g., List of justices of the Alabama Supreme Court), about half of which I created. Every judge is listed somewhere. I have over 1,300 drafts on judges right now. I try to move one to mainspace about every other day. I never move one to mainspace unless I can pin down their dates of birth and death, and identify their predecessor and successor, or where I can say after an exhaustive search that the information is not to be found anywhere. However, I am also content to have the links remain red until the draft is up to my standards. Consider this from the point of view of the article subject. If it was your history being written, wouldn't you want the writer to do everything they could to present the vital statistics generally present in articles? BD2412 T 19:04, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

- FloridaArmy, you just need a little bit more care with some of your articles. For instance, Draft:Don Francisco Maria Celi is notable, but the draft has some issues: it spends about half the time discussing Riverhills Park, a different subject; it doesn't go into a lot of detail on Celi; there are a couple typos; there's no infobox; and there's a clear URL error in the references. There's lots of source material on Celi on newspapers.com in a brief search, and if you added another couple articles to Celi and cleaned it up just a little, it should be an easy accept. The other one I just looked at was Draft:Kangaroo Records, which might also be notable, but it's not clear whether the article is on Kangaroo Records or Henry Hayes. I see you moved it from Henry Hayes, If you ask me, Henry Hayes clearly notable from the references in that draft. I don't know why it was rejected and I can understand why that frustrates you. - Thanks for your input User:SportingFlyer. I came across Celi as a redlink. I don't really understand how there isn't coverage of the expedition on Wikipedia. I commented further on the article page and tried to address your concerns.
- I changed the subject focus for the Draft:Kangaroo Records article based on a suggestion from User:Ghmyrtle who has a lot of expertise innthe subject area. I feel that it shouldn't matter so much either way. I see it as a combined article. The musician and his label. The label and the musician. I would be happy to have help with it. The musician/label made some interesting recordings and launched the careers of at least two notable musicians. The kabel also has at least one hit to its credit. It's an indie label and it's not Virg8n Records but I think it's exactly the stuff that belongs on Wikipedia. Ive3 tried to do what I can for it but I am stuxk with it in draftspace and need input and assistance that come with collaborating with other editors on subjects in mainspace. Since when is Wikipedia a solo effort? Isn't the whole idea of a Wiki that I can get others to look at a subjext Im3 working on and help me with it? FloridaArmy (talk) 01:49, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- Makes sense on Kangaroo Records, just noting that from an outside observer the article's a little bit blurry right now. From the perspective of an AfC reviewer, keep in mind I might be looking at several articles in an hour, many of them won't be great, and I may not have ever heard of the person or topic before. If I decline something, you can always ask me why - I may have missed a source, or I may think a source is weak, or I may have just plain messed up. There are other ways to collaborate as well: consider adding a list of articles you're working on to your talk page or ask other users for help on WikiProject boards. Consider a quick checklist before submitting to AfC: a) does the article have enough references which clearly demonstrate notability with in-line citations? (You typically do a good job with this, but if there are only two or three sources, make sure they clearly show notability - I and other AfC reviewers do check sources and will decline if they aren't enough.) b) does the article have a proper introductory sentence (mentioning this because of the Celi article)? c) is the article and reference section free of typos? d) Is the article properly organised? (Adding an infobox here can be helpful.) Finally, more sources always helps a reviewer. Since you start a lot of generally notable stubs, all of these little things make it more likely I'll look at an article and go yep, mainspace-ready. Reviewers don't generally get into the reviewing game to clean up little things or add additional sources - I may help get a draft over the line from time to time, but there are little things you can do to make things easier on us. - FloridaArmy, I'm looking at Draft:Frank La Roche. To be honest, taken in isolation, it should have been accepted, but I can see why it wasn't. Reviewers are looking at the references and seeing formatting problems that are easy to fix. If this were submitted by a new editor, I think any reviewer would have just fixed it up and accepted it. But, with your level of experience, people expect better, and I suspect it was declined to make that point more than anything else.
- Is that correct according to a strict reading of the WP:AfC criteria? No. But, it's reality. So, the answer to, "How do I get this accepted" is to not give people excuses to decline it. For this edit, the "via=" field was correct; what needed to happen was add a "page=" field. For this one, the "article by Paul Dorpat" shouldn't be part of the title, it should be "last=Dorpat" and "first=Paul". Again, for a new editor these are trivial mistakes that are accepted as just being part of the learning curve, but people are looking for better from somebody with your level of experience.
- As for the more general issue of better sourcing, you really do need to dig more. I often review a draft you've written, do a google search for the subject, and find that the two or three sources you've included are on the first page of the google results. You need to search deeper than that. Go out 10 or 20 pages of search results. Try variations on the name. Try searching specifically for books, news, images, etc. Be patient and keep digging. Since you're working mostly on historical topics, relying on google may not be the best thing; they tend to be excellent for current sources, less so for historical ones. Take a look at WP:LIBRARY and sign up for some of the free resources that are available there. I have accounts on both NewspaperARCHIVE.com and Newspapers.com, which are great for historical topics. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:08, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- User:RoySmith I don't find those formatting fixes easy to do or I would have done them. I've tried messing around with cites, tables, and categories and have never found success with them. As you'll recall my preference would be to leave bare refs. I was criticized for it and someone suggested I use tools so I installed them and try to use them as best I am able. Claude Woodruff is an example where while everyone is screaming how not racist we are, here's a guy who has very substantial coverage. No no no I'm told, the Orlando Sentinel is a local paper. It's not. It's a regional paper serving a large area and lots of people. But okay. What about his team winning a College Black National Championship? Or the high school teams he head coached winning 5 state championships? Or his being inducted into two sports hall of fames? Or his programs producing lots of college stars and several pro players and coaches? Nope. Anyone who appears in a game on any pro team we include but this guy doesn't belong. But it's not racism. Or at least not our racism. I just read on ANI that it's societal racism and we can't help but reflect it. I call bullshit. Racism is racism. And it's wrong. Woodruff clearly belongs. He was influential and accomplished as a player and a coach and has been recognized as such by being covered very substantially and honored as noteworthy and notable. - Thanks, I took a look at the help page and project pages. I have a bunch of stuff I could use help with. I am not sure on the best place to ask..
- I made a whole list of Reconstruction Radical Republicans from a composite photo. The thread is up the page a bit. Also, I would love to get the photo cite fortmatted perfectly so it can be used across the articles.. I have to find it..
- I just started Draft:Selwyn Carrol. I haven't seen that he was an activist but he was something of a pioneer.
- I can't seem to get actor Draft:Andrew S. Bishop approved. Doesn't meet GNG but starred in Oscar Micheaux films and was part od a popular vaudeville team. Im3 sure others could exoand3 it no problem with more effective search tactics than I use.
- Draft:Kangaroo Records is another one I'm struggling with. The song the Freeze is on YouTube and preety fun. I think if you search Albert Collins the Freeze it come up. Or maybe the year too. I forget.
- I couldn't find an entry on Draft:African American cinema. Someone better at searching than I am should have a look before expending a lot of time on a new draft..
- I would love to see an article on Draft:Zacariah D. Greene but I think someone would have to have some deep source diving skills to do it.
- Draft:Joel Atkins was a Civil Rights leader. Should be in article space and expanded.

I dropped in on the den of iniquity known as Jimbotalk and saw your stuff. First off: why are you using the broken Articles for Creation system rather than just starting articles in mainspace? Here's the thing: make DAMNED SURE you have three reliable sources counting to GNG for a topic and make sure they are in the footnotes, and just launch in mainspace. Don't give dullards a chance to (slowly) veto your work at AFC.
Second: Better Fewer But Better, as Lenin said. Don't drop 100 stubs, drop 10 well-sourced, informative pieces. I don't know as a fact that you're spewing stubs, but I hear those squeals. Just be sure to get some sourced info in there and life is good.

- Ah extremely sorry it's at Wikipedia:ProveIt. Different websites use different formats for metadata, so one tool cannot work perfectly for every website. You have to manually enter the details in ProveIt, but it is easier than doing it manually in WikiText. Adding the publisher field when citing books makes reviewing the source much easier.
