Hey, I think the post on "unfired steam engines" doesnt need its own page. Unfired refers to steam engines that are "cold" or not running. Correct me if im wrong - AH (talk) 07:14, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

That looks better. Apart from the citation we need for his education and early employment -see WP:BLP, I think it quite acceptable. Co-ordinates for SS Mont-Blanc

Good idea to put a final location for the wreck of SS Mont-Blanc. However I cam curious on how you came up with the location co-ordinates? On the maps I tried, those co-ordinates plots out on land, right in the middle of the Richmond railway yards. Mont-Blanc blew up in the harbour at Pier 6 at the foot of Richmond Street. (The book Ground Zero by Howell and Ruffman plots the position pretty precisely.)Dan Conlin (talk) 23:46, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

About Liscomb Game Sanctuary

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Liscomb Game Sanctuary a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. @Home Lander: the problem here is that I want to keep some of the article it was copied from, where it is. As it stands the Liscomb Sanctuary, Nova Scotia article is a horrible mess of two different topics. I maintained the history in the edit summary. @Home Lander:@Anthony Appleyard: thanks, but not exactly what I wanted, and I could have done that myself from the outset. The problem now is that Liscomb Sanctuary, Nova Scotia is a redirect and has lost its history. So, I now have three questions:

(1) is the loss of this history a problem?

(2) can I just revert the textual change that Anthony made at Liscomb Sanctuary, Nova Scotia, or will this impact the history?

(3) is there a better way I could have handled this split from the outset. I did try to find something in Help, but to no avail, so I was probably looking in the wrong places and using the wrong search terms. It must be a fairly common thing to do, probably to split an article that has a section that has grown too big, though this is a slightly different situation.

That edit is now the immediately previous edit (03:42, 24 December 2017) of Liscomb Game Sanctuary, after I history-merged. The edit history of Liscomb Sanctuary, Nova Scotia is not lost :: it is now at Liscomb Game Sanctuary. This compare across the repaired cut-and-paste point shows that those 2 edits are identical. Where Derek Andrews said "a horrible mess of two different topics", which 2 subjects are those? Currently Liscomb Game Sanctuary is a short article which is about (1) where it is, (2) its history; (3) its biology; (4) its geology; (5) its roads.   • • • The game sanctuary is as its name suggests a conservation area, and is administered by the Province of Nova Scotia and was created in the 1920's. Some of it is within the boundary of HRM, some in the adjoining county. Liscomb Sanctuary is a more recent creation, and is the name given by its adminstrators, HRM. It is solely within the boundary of HRM, and includes some of the same area as the game sanctuary. Invitation to WikiProject Portals

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.

It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.

The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.

A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Let's do this.

Vernon Mills

I noticed your prod tagging of Vernon Mills, Nova Scotia — and while I concur with your inability to find it in that form, I did want to point out that the NRC database does list a community in Nova Scotia, in Kings County no less, called Vernon Mines, which means "Mills" is just a spelling error rather than an outright hoax. That said, per WP:GEOLAND we would still have to reliably source an article about Vernon Mines to something more than just the NRC database alone, so it's still not actually in undeletability territory yet, but there is a lead for determining whether the article is salvageable or not. Yes, I noticed that too, but it is a rescinded place name. It was listed in Place Names of Nova Scotia too. I'm not convinced of the merit in keeping an unlikely spelling error, especially given the number of mirrors that it has spawned, and I see no merit in creating a page for a place of dubious notability that no longer exists.--Derek Andrews (talk) 23:01, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. This month: A general update.

The current status of the project is as follows:

• Progress of the project has been generally delayed since September due to development issues (more bitrot than expected, some of the code just being genuinely confusing, etc) and personal injury (I suffered a concussion in October and was out of commission for almost two months as a result).
• I currently expect to be putting out a proper call for CollaborationKit pilots in January/February, with estimated deployment in February/March if things don't go horribly wrong (they will, though, don't worry). As a part of that, I will properly update the page and send out announcement and reach out to all projects already signed up as pilots for WikiProject X in general, at which point those (still) interested can volunteer specifically to test the CollaborationKit extension.
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Pilots was originally created for the first WikiProject X prototype, and given this is where the project has since gone, it's only logical to continue to use it. While I haven't yet updated the page to properly reflect this:
  • If you want to add your project to this page now, feel free. Just bear in mind that more information what to actually expect will be added later/included in the announcement, because by then I will have a much better idea myself.
• Until then, you can find me in my corner working on making the CollaborationKit code do what we want and not just what we told it, per the workboard.

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 14

Updates: I've been focusing largely on the development side of things, so we are a lot closer now to being ready to actually start discussing deploying it and testing it out here.

There's just a few things left that need to be resolved:

• A bunch of language support issues in particular, plus some other release blockers, such as the fact that currently there's no good way to find any hubs people do create.
• We also probably need some proper documentation and examples up to even reference if we want a meaningful discussion. We have the extension documentation and some test projects, but we probably need a bit more. Also I need to be able to even find the test projects! How can I possibly write reports about this stuff if I can't find any of it?!

Some other stuff that's happened in the meantime:

• Midpoint report is out for this round of the project, if you want to read in too much detail about all the problems I've been running into.
• WikiProject Molecular Biology have successfully set up using the old module system that CollaborationKit is intended to replace (eventually), and it even seems to work, so go them. Based on the issues they ran into, it looks like the members signup thing on that system has some of the same problems as we've been unable to resolve in CK, though, which is... interesting. (Need to change the content model to the right thing for the formwizard config to take. Ugh, content models.)

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

I see that you tagged this article with a Proposed deletion tag. This is a reminder that any time you tag a page for any type of deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/RFD/TFD/etc.), you must post a notification on the talk page of the page creator. This is especially important for a BLP PROD because the content creator may be able to easily find a reference for the article and so it needn't be deleted.

This notification is done most easily by using Twinkle to tag pages and setting up your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator". Then every time you tag a page, Twinkle will post these notifications for you. If you choose not to use it, then you must notify the page creator yourself, either with a template or by writing your own message. Twinkle has a lot of other nice features, like the ability to place other tags on pages, keep deletion logs, report editors to noticeboards, that make it a very handy tool for editors.
