Kennedy image

Regarding this edit, could you take a moment to explain to me why the badly framed and cropped official photo is a better choice for the Joe Kennedy III infobox than the closer-cropped and more aesthetically pleasing version of the official photo? @Winkelvi: The standard, as I was told, has always been that we use full version from the official's website, no matter how badly cropped their photo is. I say "as I was told" because I, too, tried to change a badly cropped photo about a year ago (though I can't remember exactly who or what article) and was told we use the full version no matter what. I would suggest starting a discussion on Kennedy's talk page (maybe RFC?) and get a consensus. This is definitely a problem throughout the American politicians articles (i.e. Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris). Hope that helps? Corky 20:17, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for responding. I've heard previously that the official photo is generally preferable but I can't say I've heard that the official photo, if badly done, cannot be edited. It is, after all, in the public domain and can legally be edited. In this case, I think the official photo is less than optimal because of the poor framing and cropping and see no reason why we can't use the cropped version. After all, it's still the official photo, just a better version of it. Yes, I could run an RfC on it. But those can take up to 30 days, and honestly, I just see the need for it. Why not just suffice it to say that two editors who are fine with the photo have boldly decided that the cropped version is the better of the two? -- ψλ ● ✉ ✓ 00:51, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Shaun Vandiver infobox

Hey Corky - Vandiver had a significant playing career and really should be in the Basketball biography infobox vs the college coach infobox so his measurements, draft info, and European playing career are captured. I don’t mind doing the conversion, but I wanted to let you know as a courtesy since I know you have done the bulk of the work on the article. Thoughts? @Rikster2: Thanks, I appreciate it! I'm good with the infobox change... his playing career was probably much better than his coaching career and IMO he is being over paid! Both don't deserve to be in the infobox... I just did it to be consistent with other ESU coaches. It's very likely this is his last season (or the Hornet Nation can hope 😁). MIAA Tournament article?

Hey - a while back an editor created conference tournament articles for a number of Division I and Division II conferences (example). I was a little surprised that he didn’t create one for the MIAA since it is one of the stronger leagues. Would you be interested? @UCO2009bluejay: Yes, that's basically it. Newman will leave the Heartland Conference after the 2018–19 season to become an "associate member" of The MIAA which means they will participate in all sports, with the exception of football; "affiliate members" only participate in one sport. The MIAA, according to its commissioner, is currently looking at "removing a requirement that member schools must sponsor football in order to be a full MIAA member institution". Joseph Cella is not a career member of the state department

Cella has never worked for the State department. He was Trump's liason for Catholic affairs during the campaign. Once again you would have known this if you had bothered to actually visit the link. Nowhere is it described that Cella has ever served in the state department. Although he has worked for Congress for 20 years. OK, so? Just as it is with article names, we use the commonly used logo rather than the "official" logo. Sometimes, they start re-branding before they update their websites... it's been known to happen. It's pretty clear they use the MB logo over the otter head. It's the most recognizable. Please be aware that the Otter logo and MB logo are "official" logos of CSUMB athletics. And didn't you call me out of not using primary logo? Can you provide a reliable source that the Athletics dept has in fact re-branded?

I'm aware he Otther logo is an official logo, but they hardly use it anymore. As I've said before, we use the more commonly recognizable logos. In this case, its's the MB logo as that is what is used most often – I think that's pretty clear. To make it clear to you, I've posted links below:

I looked into the discussion about the Cleveland Cavaliers logo and the census seem to be that primary logo should be presented in the infobox over secondary/alternate logos despite the team's choice of logo for their social media accounts.
Now regarding the CCSU athletic logo, they have not re-branded as far as I can search on their news. I tried to replace the current CCSU primary logo with the secondary one as it was and is "commonly used" within the athletics website. But then you reverted it because it is not the primary.
So now going back to CSUMB, if you can provide a reliable source that they have indeed re-branded then we shall keep the MB logo as the logo on the infobox; otherwise we should change it to the actual primary logo. TjBison (talk) 01:23, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

I'm not changing my mind on CSUMB. As I've said before, there is enough evidence to show that they don't use the Otter logo. The reason the Cavaliers have the logo it does now is because it was commonly used (as shown in my comments) and was the primary identifier for the team when that discussion took place. This is the way we've always done it. I've already agreed to revert my Central Connecticut revert as I've noticed it is not commonly used anymore. So once again, I'm not changing my mind on this. Maybe you could start a RFC on the talk page and see what others think. I certainly will post every piece of evidence I can to show my case, as should you if you go that route. Actually, this is why came here too. Just to be clear, you've boldly removed content, (sourced content at that) and anyone who disagrees with you can revert you. It then falls to you to explain your edits on the talk page and seek consensus. WP:MISSION is an essay... and nothing more. It is not a policy or even a guideline. I would suggest you slow down on these mass removals, perhaps even restore them for now, and start a discussion on the validity of wp:mission and if it should be implemented. I'm concerned about WP:NOTNEWS, WP:UNDUE, and WP:NPOV issues, specifically with regards to the 2018 election content. In general, I don't believe it's encyclopedic to cover the constant "he said/she said" that is part and parcel of all campaigns, and that most coverage of individual elections should be on the election pages, not the candidate pages. Tenney is probably in for a very tough reelection race from Brindisi, and she has made numerous remarks in the past month that have drawn considerable national attention. You can Google her name and "Parkland shooting," "un-American," (regarding the State of the Union speech), and "character" or "domestic violence" with "Rob Porter" and probably will see 100,000 or more hits on each. From a backwater congressional district, she's thrust herself into the national limelight on three occasions in less than a month. She's having trouble raising dough in what should be a cakewalk for an incumbent. I haven't seen anyone comment on the irony, but she's an attorney who's disparaged attorney Brindisi because his attorney father represented some alleged goombahs before he was born, 40-some-odd years ago, and even though he gave up his criminal practice in 1983. I think it certainly needed trimmed... which I removed a good chunk unsourced information. Removed the same info in Claudia's article. MelanieN has started a section at Talk:Claudia Tenney#Sins of the donors you may be interested in... citing WP:UNDUE reasons as well. BTW, you need to stick to one person and one person only when asking to upload files, or leave it to the article's talk page. Acting as Predecessor

You said that "we've been listing them in the infoboxes for years" without using the Acting person. But I've seen several examples where that isn't true (for example - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bolden). And like I said, that's not how it's done on the official example page for this type of infobox. So is there a wikipedia rule you know of, because I couldn't find one. It seems as if many politicians use the permanent predecessor, not the acting, and have in the past few years since I've been editing AFAIK. US Cabinet secretaries and other government officials do this. IMO, it makes most sense too... acting officials are only performing the duties of the permanent position, therefore aren't numbered (i.e. 46th Secretary of State). I would like to talk about this edit, though. You may want to check your email (again) that dates August 29, 2017 with the subject "Virginia Athletics brand". I forwarded you an email, which I believe you told me you received, that came directly from the Athletics Department. It is also the color they use at virginiasports.com. List of Michigan State Spartans men's basketball seasons

The automatic set colors are no better at contrast issues than the ones I used. Additionally, at least one other page ha changed the colors to correlate with the team: Wisconsin. @Lincolning: The automatic colors may not be much better, but at least they are more compliant than manual colors being added. I've got no problem with you removing the team logos from the Governor's Cup (Florida) page, however you might want to go through other sports rivalry pages as well. I only added the logos because I'd seen it done elsewhere. 2017–18 Big Ten Conference men's basketball season: color changes

Hey Corky, just wondering why you made the changes to the colors on 2017–18 Big Ten Conference men's basketball season? The colors as they were fell within the compliance protocol which states that it should reach at least WCAG 2.0's AA level, and AAA level when feasible. @Lincolning: Just because it is "at least 2.0", doesn't mean it is compliant. I'm not color blind (no where close to it), but Maryland sure isn't readable and Minnesota is difficult to read as well. Plus, we're not being consistent – {{CollegePrimaryStyle}} is being used for some and {{NCAA color cell}} for others. Why not just use one? I've been using the secondary color to try and separate the colors so at least they will be compliant all around, not just 2.0. Corky 21:38, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes, an I changed it to the gold background so that black and maroon wouldn't be so close together. IMO, if at least three WCAG boxes don't say "YES", then it isn't compliant. If the "are colors compliant?" box says "sort of...", then I usually accept that. In the end, I personally don't see the big deal if we don't have both school colors. The websites won't likely change until tomorrow or sometime this week. The White House won't release anything, just like they didn't for Tillerson. The only announcement made was on Twitter. I need your help

Hello Corkythehornetfan (talk), I was wondering if you could help me with something: I'm trying to update Template:2018 Villanova Wildcats men’s basketball navbox so it shows up at the bottom of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Game article. Where I need your help is in the template itself. I'm trying to update the template so that whenever a user clicks on the view or talk page part of the template in the left hand corner, it directs them to the template itself, and not a redlink. issuing warnings

It helps our countervandalism effort if you issue warnings after reverting vandalism; Twinkle makes this very easy, too. You reverted vandalism by Jubresner but issued no warnings and many admins will refuse to block vandals whom haven't been sufficiently warned. I slapped the vandal in question with warnings and I believe that's brought it to an end, but we might have already achieved a block and prevented further vandalism for which I'm just going to have to keep an eye out. From Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences, under Revert and rollback click some options for opening the vandal's talk page after you revert. Under Warn user you can set options for your default warning level and add any custom warning templates you like. (There are already a bunch of templates loaded.) That way, when you use Twinkle to revert vandalism it will open the offender's talk page, you select the warning and hit "submit". Maybe four clicks for the whole adventure. That dialog at the user talk page also has the option to report the editor to any of a couple drama boards for action, so a report can be submitted to AIV with diff attached after the fourth/final warning was given. broken citation templates

With this edit, you broke nine cs1 templates (search for the accessdate= text in the rendered page or turn on cs1|2 maintenance messaging. Please fix these and take more care when using scripts.

Scripts are problematic. They are assumed, rightly or wrongly, to produce correct results. Alas, this is not the case for all tools. I have found that reFill is prone to errors and its owner unresponsive. Every edit made by that tool should be carefully scrutinized for correctness.

Hey I know you edit college basketball pages frequently and I'm looking for people to help me with a content dispute I'm having with an IP that seems to be never ending. It's regarding team pages that have a table listing the seed each year the team qualified for the tournament. This IP I am debating has added the years the team missed the tournament to several pages including (and what started this) the page for Kansas. Me and 2 other editors have not only stated the years missed serve no purpose for inclusion but also that it's a consensus not to include the years missed and the IP is not backing down. Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

University of Cambridge logo

Hi Corkythehornetfan,

Seems to be a bit of confusion re: the logo. My understanding of the situation is that it is a copyrighted logo, and therefore altering it is not good practice. In the portion used section it stipulates: "The entire logo is used to convey the meaning intended and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the intended image." While I appreciate that the university coat of arms is displayed above, this is not the university logo. The purpose of the section at the bottom of the infobox is to display how the university brands itself. The university brands itself using the two elements (coat of arms, and wordmark) together without exception. Your decision to only include the wordmark was therefore not the university's. All of the ancient university pages and their infobox reflect this.

@Malinion: Thanks for reaching out. This is Wikipedia, we don't have to follow their "request" to keep the wordmark and coat of arms together. If anything, the coat of arms is copyrighted but the wordmark is not since it is just text. It serves of no value to have the coat of arms at both the top and bottom of the infobox... if you want the coat of arms and wordmark together, then I recommend removing the coat of arms from the top of the infobox. You make a good point about the copyrighted status of the logo which is why I was careful with my wording. This issue for me arises from the fact that I do not feel the wordmark holds any value for the reasons you just explained. Without the adjoining shield it is kind of redundant. I've popped a discussion up on the talk page just for the record before you responded, but I think an RfC would be good idea, even if it is just to avoid this sort of issue cropping up again. Hello Corky, is Keith Kellogg still the executive secretary of the NSC? I see that you wrote that he currently holds both positions, and I know that he will still serve as a presidential assistant, but the news articles that I read (and that I cited in the article) portrayed the promotion as a way to allow John Bolton to continue to reshape the NSC to his liking, with another position being opened up for him to fill (and that strongly implies he won't be the executive secretary anymore). @UW Dawgs: If you want to save the link for the article, then just unbold the wording... I'm fine with that. I removed it because it is listed at the top of the navbox, so I don't think it is needed. With that being said, the leads in these articles need changed per WP:REDUNDANCY... they should not say "This is a list of X" or "This list of Xs...". Instead, maybe give a brief description on the subject or something in that nature (see List of Alabama Crimson Tide head football coaches as an example, but obviously it doesn't need to be that detailed). Since U.S. Cyber Command has now been elevated to full unified combatant command status, it now take precedence over joint activities such as the National Security Agency. As a unified combatant command, Cyber Command now receives far more funding than the NSA. This is why that I put the Infobox with Cyber Command on top. Even the NSA, on Nakasone's bio page, places his title of Commander of Cyber Command ahead of his title of director of NSA here. I'm open to to discuss about this. Not everything needs an edit summary, but I did add one when I made my edits to the article. And I'm not really sure how there was an edit conflict between our two revisions since they were 14 minutes apart. While that article is not great, I do think it makes a claim to notability (multiple DII championships) and with some minor cleanup (and the addition of a stub tag) was getting ready to mark it as patrolled. Yes, and neither of them – as long as you or I are editing (let's be honest) – will have groups like the football navboxes or university navboxes do. I think, regardless of how I have edited prior to the last month, that they should be using |titlestyle= rather than |basestyle= because it is only the title we are colorizing. I work primarily with university articles and to me, this logo is like a university logo/seal. We don't use them in multiple articles per WP:NFC#UUI§17. That's what I see here. Hey, Just wanting clarification, I understand MOS:ACCESS#FONTSIZE, however, does that apply to ALL infoboxes? The only reason I ask is because there are several, even those of the newly confirmed nominees, that do not conform. I'm sure it was unintentional, however, to me it seemed like a targeted revert when the others of Emily Coody Marks, Jeffrey Uhlman Beaverstock, Colm Connolly, Maryellen Noreika and Jill Otake were untouched, yet, apparently in violation of MOS as well. FYI, the display of |name= in {{infobox officeholder}} has nothing to do with Wikidata - most of the templates simply default to displaying the article title when that parameter doesn't appear. You can confirm this by comparing the Wikidata item and the enwiki article for Jeff Beaverstock - the Wikidata item uses a different label than our article title, but the template display matches the article title. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Football logo

I recently changed the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns football logo from the years 2011-2018 to the “Ragin’ Cajuns” wordmark. I changed this because Louisiana football uses this logo from 2011-Present. They have never used the Louisiana workmark, as it was only used by Basketball, Baseball, and Softball. I just wanted to clear that up. 71.88.147.93 (talk) 19:54, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

The problem is that File:Ragin Cajuns logo.svg is a non-free logo (a.k.a. copyrighted) and can only be used in the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns article per WP:NFC#UUI§17. The wordmark is also used in the 2018 Football Prospectus. It it the only simple logo that the school is currently using, therefore per our WikiProject's standards, we have to use the 'Louisiana' wordmark in the all team articles for Louisiana. Oregon State Beavers colors at Module:College color/data

Hey Corkythehornetfan (talk), I thought I'd leave you a message on your talk page about the color renderings for the Oregon State Beavers. I don't want to engage in an edit-war with you over it, so that's why I'm leaving a message on your talk page. Anyways, I thought I'd tell you that yes, you're right: the official color code for the Beavers is  #DC4405 . I guess the question is how to render it. I think it's pretty obvious that Oregon State's primary color is orange. I checked Snook.ca to see whether white or black would be more color contrast-compliant, and here are the results:

white text on orange background
black text on orange background

Yes, it is pretty obvious that Orange is the primary color but per the links above, they are still not that compliant and color-blind users would still have trouble reading the words in the navboxes. I have never been a fan of “preserving the school’s color” as the primary background color when it isn’t accessible. It’s not fair to our color-blind readers. OSU uses a black background for their website, so I don’t really see the problem. It’s not as bright as OK State’s where black font is accessible, otherwise I’d be OK with it. We have it it listed in the infobox as “Orange and Black”, that’s the main thing. Corky 04:51, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure if the treasury tag is exactly correct; I asked a question earlier at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions/Archive/2018/September#Are works by the FDIC public domain? and the consensus was that the FDIC is an independent agency of the federal government so the regular PD-Gov tag is probably better than the PD-Treasury tag. I don't mean to second-guess your judgement (I was uncertain enough to ask the question, after all, and am relying on other people's research/opinions here). You told me .gov images were public domain

What are you talking about? It didn't come from Treasury? At the top of the page it says 'US Department of the Treasury' right next to the CDFI seal. This is a gov site, and you told me pictures from a gov site were public domain. Why can't I use these? Blakebs (talk) 17:14, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Common sense would tell you that not everything on a government website is created by the government agency. The privacy policies on the website explain that. Most agencies will have similar backdrops for their personnel. Also, the exif data at the bottom of the page tells you when those pix were taken (if the pix have them) and that right there should be a good indicator. You can’t just assume that if it’s on a government, that it’s a government-issued photo. You need to do more reading before uploading anymore photos. You have been blocked from Commons for a week, I’d recommend taking that time to read up on guidelines. Don’t upload them the English Wikipedia either as that’ll get you blocked too. Hey, Corky it's been a while. When you get a chance can you let me know who I can contact about a map like we have on the MIAA page (which as you know will need to be updated for the 2019 season?) But a prolific editor, who has expanded NCAA championship content significantly, created a map on the RMAC page [7] which has a lot of extra data space compared to the one on the MIAA page, which as a "file." (Also, can you help in informing them Dixie State is moving to the WAC next season[Or, I'll let them know if you'd like me to discuss this with them]). Logo update

It was pointed out over at Talk:Tampa Bay Rays that the Rays officially made a slight change to their primary logo in the last year, which I confirmed per the logo history on their website. The image from the website is a .jpg but I know a lot of the logos that are used on Wiki are .svg so I thought I would ask since you are fluent in the updating process if you were able to make this fix? The file you uploaded is has been scrunched horizontally. Unfortunately I’m not sure of exact dimensions (this isn’t my forte, sorry), but I know that this file is directly off the University of Arkansas Style Guides & Logos webpage. No, once Nikki Haley left, that position was removed as a cabinet-level member. The only reason it was a cabinet-level member was because Haley convinced Trump to keep it there while she was Ambassador. See this article. Corky

In reverting my good faith edits at Module:College color/data regarding the official HTML color codes for the Fresno State Bulldogs, you said "Fresno State hasn’t changed the hex codes. @Charlesaaronthompson: The art sheet was emailed to me from their Trademarks/Licensing director, Clarence Chiong. Athletics uses Pantone 199 C and Pantone 2787 C as their primary red and blue, and the colors at the module came by 'Inspecting the Element' tool on the gobulldogs.com website to be more accurate. I watched him in a Knicks/Warriors game 2 1/2 years ago where he played real well. He's also got an article, but it's sad news. Furthermore, all of the ones that have it are much older features, and don't match the format done by newer features, like (soon) Georgia. @Ohconfucius: Your script removed color boxes that shouldn't have been removed at the University of Notre Dame article. See this edit for the edit. Duke Blue Devils official colors

Hello Corky, I just wanted to clarify what the exact shade of Duke blue is as it relates to the Duke Blue Devils athletics department. According to GoDuke.com, the exact official colors for Duke are Duke blue (Pantone 287) and white. I cross-referenced the color at Pantone.com. The shade there is  #003087 . I don't want to engage in an edit-war with you over at Module:College color/data, but I am asking if there is any way that the color for Duke could be changed to match the color found at Pantone.com? Black text in NFL team templates

Hello Corky, I have a question for you: do you know how to remove the black colored text from National Football League (NFL) team templates, such as Template:Los Angeles Chargers or Template:Miami Dolphins over at Module:Gridiron color/data? Removing Edits on the UL Article

You have removed several sections on UL article, stating that they were 'not sourced.' I can't help but notice that there pretty much identical sections in other articles that you leave untouched. An example of this would be the numerous sections in the LTU article that are list pretty much the same type items (parts of the campus, dorm history, etc.) and which none are 'sourced.' Can you please explain to me the disparity in your editing? If one article is not acceptable, then why is the other one?

It all depends on how much I look into an article. Some days I look deep into an article and remove unsourced content, other days I only make brief edits. I don’t single any articles out. OK. Here's a brief overview of what this conversation is about. I'm the only editor who wanted to change the Miami Heat's (and Sioux Falls Skyforce)'s colors at Module:Sports color/basketball and in the infobox of the Heat and Skyforce's articles so that they were red, yellow, and black–in that order. The other three editors in that discussion wanted to leave the colors as black, red, and yellow–in that order. That's basically what that discussion is all about. OK. Thank you for your input. It looks like it is in my best interests to WP:DROPTHESTICK and move on, since the established WP:CONSENSUS for the Miami Heat's colors at Module:Sports color/basketball and in the infobox of the team's article is for the color order to be black, red, and yellow–in that order. This is based solely on the team's Reproduction and Usage Guideline Sheet. The one question I never got to ask is this: aren't teams represented by their logos? It's pretty obvious to me that the primary colors of the Heat's logo are red and yellow, with black used as an outline color. The only reason why I wanted to change the colors to red and yellow with black as a text color is to represent all of the club's colors. However, with that being said, I can see now that I am definitely in the minority. So, I shall simply WP:GETOVERIT, and stop trying to change the colors. Yes, they are represented by their logos, but just because a color is in the logo doesn't mean it's in the teams colors (on the college side, the Florida Gators don't have green in their school colors). Teams don't need to have every color associated with them in the navboxes, either. IMO, it's better to just use three colors that work and you know are compliant - in this case it's red, black, and white. Corky 18:03, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
