AvicBot and talk pages

When AvicBot applies a speedy tag, if there is a talk page it tags that as well. The second step is unnecessary. When a page has been deleted, a prominent warning comes up automatically if there is a talk page. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:35, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Categories for discussion/Working/Large

Hi, Is Avicbot reading Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large as well as the regular page? There haven't been any large listings since the bot was put onto CFD stuff but it would be useful to know for certain if it will be looking there before doing so. Timrollpickering (talk) 20:37, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Nope, AvicBot only reads WP:CFD/W automatically. (Though if needed, AvicBot can be started manually on WP:CFD/W/L.) Avicennasis @ 22:34, 12 Tamuz 5772 / 22:34, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Polite CFDW inquiry

Hi! I've long noticed a troublesome trend with Wikipedians writing and running bots that perform tasks that are essential for the proper maintenance and functioning of Wikipedia without sharing the source code to them. Then, years later, if/when that bot runner disappears (or has something bad happen to him; the canonical "run over by a bus" example), Wikipedia is in a bad place, because we have to scramble to re-create a program that evolved over the course of years and that had very rich functionality.

That is why I proposed a requirement at WP:BAG that the source code of all bots be provided before they are approved to do any novel task, and that the available source code by kept up to date as the bot matures. I haven't tracked whether that requirement actually ended up going through, but I still maintain that it's a good idea, and in order to "walk the walk", I contributed back the countless hours I've spent working on category robots back to the community to the PyWikipediaBot SVN repository. I'm sure you no doubt discovered that this was the case when you were able to effortlessly bring up your category moving bot in the wake of the June 2012 North American derecho that left Cydebot inoperative for five days owing to a lack of power. We are well-covered for the eventuality of me possibly getting run over by a bus (much as I would hate for that to happen).

However, the fact remains that I have not been run over a bus yet, and I would like to respectfully and politely ask for you to leave the category moving tasks to Cydebot until that (or another power outage) should occur. I spent a lot of time writing the bot and I think it's only fair that I get the enjoyment of of running it too, and it's important to clarify that I released the source code not for other people to be able to run it here, but for other people to be able to run it in the event that I am no longer able to (or of course on other language Wikipedias where I am not not running a bot). Thanks for letting me bend your ear, Cyde Weys 01:54, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello. First, let me thank you for the polite note. It seems clear to me that this is something you've spent a lot of thought on, and I appreciate that you can calmly and rationally explain your position on something that seems close to your heart.
The task I purposed was solely to have AvicBot run when Cydebot go down, as you mention above. It was never my intention to try to replace Cydebot - only to have a backup approved and on-hand should it be needed. This is why I coded in a checkpage - so that AvicBot's CFD task can be called upon only when Cydebot is not feeling well. When Cydebot is up, as is the case now, AvicBot should be disabled with this page.
For the moment, I've commented out this task from cron - effectively disabling the script. My question is - do you feel that this checkpage is enough? (Should the instructions be more clear about *only* enabling this task if Cydebot has been down for 'X' hours?) Would you prefer the checkpage to be fully protected, perhaps under your/Cydebots' userspace, for you to enable if you know Cydebot will be down? Or would you rather the task be left alone, until that bus comes along?
I will have no qualms about whichever decision you make. I can easily strike this task entirely off AvicBot's to-do list. I respect your choice in the matter, as well as the thoughtful way in which you've started this discussion. (If you prefer to continue this conversation more privately, feel free to email me.) Please let me know your thoughts or concerns with any of the above. Avicennasis @ 07:02, 24 Tamuz 5772 / 07:02, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for understanding. It's fine to leave the checkpage around with some instructions to the intent of "Do not enable this bot unless Cydebot is down and a sizable CFDW backlog has accumulated". Or some number of hours (24?) is fine, if that's easier to explain. --Cyde Weys 22:14, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

I've modified the editnotice for the checkpage to reflect the above - Feel free to make any other suggestions (or just modify it yourself.) I'm going to uncomment the line in my crontab to start this check again. If you need anything else, or decide later on to change your decision, my talk page is always open. Article Rejection

I have not received a reply for this post, so I'm posting again.

Hi, I received a rejection for my article on "The Leprecaun Monthly" cartoon magazine. I used a couple of Wikipedia articles as reference that both reference the magazine:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Fitzpatrick_%28cartoonist%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fergus_O%27Hea

and I also included two other website references and the "Dictionary of Irish Artists", a book that is an encyclopedia of Irish Artists through the last two centuries which I was actually able to check out at a library and read (which is more than the other writers probably did for their articles because it's a very difficult book to find!). So in closing, I thought 5 references would be sufficient for this title. Can you tell me what I'm lacking? I have artwork too, but I can't upload it since my status is not high enough yet.

Thanks!

Pywikipediabot version

Hi Avicennasis! I notice that AvicBot (task list · contribs) seems to be running an old version of Pywikipediabot, which is causing small issues like this. As interwiki.py is frequently updated, the bot policy recommends that its users update to the latest version of the script daily. Is this something you could put in cron? Thank you!  madman 02:39, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Facepalm It is, or at least, was, until it apparently broke recently... Thank you for the heads-up. I've stopped any Interwiki instances until I've fixed that. Avicennasis @ 05:59, 4 Av 5772 / 05:59, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Create talk pages with AWB

Is it possible to create talk pages with AWB and draw data from Persondata or defaultsort? Otherwise can Avicbot do that? User:WR227 has created quite a few articles that need to be added to WikiProject Biography, WikiProject football (dutch task force), and WikiProject netherlands. The defaultsort needs to be pulled because of the sort as parameter of {{WikiProject Biography}}. Ryan Vesey 20:20, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

AFC Backlog

Articles for Creation urgently needs YOUR help!

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 2558 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our Help Desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions.

PS: we have a great AFC helper script at User:Timotheus Canens/afchelper4.js which helps in reviewing in just few edits easily!

We would greatly appreciate your help. Currently, only a small handful of users are reviewing articles. Any help, even if it's just 2 or 3 reviews, it would be extremely beneficial.
On behalf of the Articles for Creation project,
TheSpecialUser TSU
