@Rodw: People had the same worries about Wales, we've made it happen! You'd need time to work on it of course which if you haven't got it then it can't be done. I will have more time after I've marked 13 dissertations & approx 70 other essays - so June ish ( but going to Glastonbury Festival end of June). I would be interested in putting together the "core list" & have been trying to work on more "vital articles" but wonder what the criteria for these would be? I could do some subjective lists of what I think is most important, starting with county articles etc, but perhaps the better measure would be popular pages (eg Somerset, Bristol, Devon, Cornwall etc which are often headed by biographies - not the sort of thing I normally work on.— Rod ^talk 17:57, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

@Rodw: A core list like Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon/Core articles would be extremely valuable I think as it can be referred to even after a contest and during the year and long term. It does take a while to generate but if you roughly base it on that achievable in a few months, and things can go from there. If you see the article improvements and creations for this at the bottom of the main WP:Atdrag page this has been quite extraordinary, I don't think we've ever seen something like this happen on here before. It stands out a mile from other contests as so many core and stale articles have been improved. And it's something which I'm sure could be replicated for the South West if given a chance. A few dedicated editors on board and you can get the ball rolling. The core list for now is something to keep in mind amidst your hectic schedule!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:05, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Starting on the core list, roughly create some main topics like Architecture, Culture, Geography, History, Politicis/Law, Sciences, Sport, Transport etc. Imagine an Ark for the West Country and what would go in it. Roughly 200-250 articles for each if possible, Start with Top/high importance assessed topics and sort them into subjects. Obviously Grade I listed buildings are the start for architecture, major towns, rivers and counties a start for Geography, major train stations/lines and roads for Transport etc it'll start to take shape. I would love to help start an English county contest, but unfortunately Hampshire isn't in the West Country - it's in the south east. I'd suggest consolidating all of the military base articles into a general military section and add any Army or RAF units that have strong associations with one of the counties. I'd recommend against adding any ships that were built in the West Country, however defined, unless they have a strong association with the area because of their name, etc. Forex, the various HMS Cornwalls would qualify, but not HMS Aurora (1913) because she was just Devonport Dockyard-built. LOL! Thanks Deb. I wish I had more time for article creations but running and planning the contest I'm afraid takes a lot of time! When I see others working hard and putting in the effort I reflect that. It creates a positive environment for everybody, as opposed to the usual sort of grumpy atmosphere many editors face on here! What I love about this most of all is how beautiful Wales looks. The articles and photographs often looking stunning. Sadly it turns out it's fractal in nature, and has self-similarity when magnified. All of those articles which got pushed up from stub to start and start to c, etc, got replaced by a new wave of stubs. And, what's worse, new male biogs outnumbered new women biogs by a ratio of about 20:1. Upshot: the mess is now bigger than it was. Still, err, well done. No, the mess is not now bigger than it was, that's incorrect and offensive to the people who contributed. More important articles were destubbed and cleaned up over this and more than the number of footballer stubs created. Yes, I know on those footballer stubs, I've expressed similar concerns offwiki on both those drilled stubs and the Women in Red cause. I didn't want to upset the creator of them, but it was never about article count, it was about quality/core improvements. If we host anonther one there could be points for improvement those footballer stubs. I suspect a lot of them are permastubs and should probably be redirected.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:39, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Here's a diff of the WP:Wales article quality table, 3 April - today (presuming that all articles got a WP:Wales template - and that's certainly not the case, though I've added a few hundred over the last couple of day, and presuming the Wikiworks engine is up-to-date ...). Even with partial counting, it broadly supports the de-messification thesis. (And I agree, facetiousness aside, that the mess is improved and that the undertaking was well worth it - don't get me wrong.) Perhaps going forwards, creation of a stub should get the minimum - 1 point, but creation of a Start or better gets a more substantial score. Awarding negative points for creating a stub too severe, I guess. And female biog improvements might get *20 points or some startling multiplication factor to reflect the lamentable gender imbalance. --Tagishsimon (talk) 09:24, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

That's interesting, but there's still a ton of articles not assessed during this. You've not accounted for the core/higher importance articles which got improved either. And not all stubs are bad. The ones on listed buildings in particular are mainly decent. I did a fair bit on the Grade I listed ones which were priority to create. I'll be fleshing out the Vale ones I started today. Remember that stubs were largely prohibited during the whole month. There was no points for anything less than a start class. I relaxed it for a few days. Perhaps in future ones the minimum 1.5 kb of readable prose should remain constant.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:31, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Just goes to prove all the aphorisms about statistics! Seriously though, the table shows a serious improvement in the coverage of Wales on Wikipedia (and also the gaps in how we assess the importance and quality of articles). I would love to see the figures on male/female biographies but with the autogenerated footballers removed since you could regard them as a statistical aberration... I've no idea what tagging/tools are available but a query on new welsh articles (start or higher) split by female biog/male biog/gender neutral articles would be interesting.

The other outcome of the competition is a number of lists of articles that need creating or improving. These will be a great help in possible future editathons, eg focusing on say, a preserved county or a principal area.

I'd also like to see a list of, for example, 500 welsh articles that should be GAs. No competition, just a list that people can work on collaboratively for a year or so. Before the contest I had Lady Llanover and Grace Williams in mind as articles that could be seriously improved but realised I needed to do a lot of background reading and searching for sources that are not readily available to do justice to both topics in the time frame of a month's contest.

When i visited the real temple, it wasn't like the one we watch in the film. Still, it was magnificient, almost like a well-engineered palace. The long (may be some 8 to 10 ft) statuette of the lord, standing in the darkness with only a small lamp being the source of light, was nothing less than majestic. I am Cuba and Black God, White Devil are much superior films from 1964, but if you want to see Hush Hush go for it, a deal ;-). It's very good but just not Baby Jane level. I am Cuba is in my top 50 for a reason, a brillant made film that any film buff definitely needs to see. Black God is a "cinematic force of nature", I can think of no better description. I don't want to start too many as it's a lot of responsibilty, but helping set things up and running the initial one and giving the responsibility to somebody else I think would work. I have a lot of guitar books, but they mostly focus on the history and different makes, plus notable players. Drmies edit

Finally I met some well-respected editor who spoke the truth about Drmies. HighInBc (zero article created till today) and Drmies both don't deserve to be Administrator. Sagaciousphil was blocked for personal attacks. While Drmies's favourite editors get only warning for calling someone "Bitch" and making personal attacks again and again and again (but never blocked, as they are Drmies's favourite editors). This is a project where Technical13 gets banned, but disruptive editors are allowed to survive with shorter blocks. --223.176.6.73 (talk) 16:37, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi ip, don't know who you are. I've always strongly respected Drmies and have always considered him one of our best editors. He has done some tremendous work with translation and been of great assistance at times, but I've pretty much always had mixed signals from him on a personal level and have often got the impression he resents me a bit, even if he approves of my work. I've noticed that ever since I criticized him for saying some really quite abusive things one time he's taken every opportunity to brandish the civility card. I'm not disputing that Chillum/High in BC wasn't correct following procedure, but I do know that him and Cassianto have an extremely long history of disagreement and that it doesn't look right him being the one to do to the block. I'm sure Chillum could produce some good content if he put his mind to it, but I do think it's sad that he seems to sit around waiting to pounce on people, he did it with Eric too. It's fair criticism, so when I see Drmies turn up and brandish the civility stick defending poor admin conduct it is pretty disappointing to see such an individual act like that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:01, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

I really have nothing against you personally, but you and Cassianto have such a long history of disagreement and hostility I had to be honest that it really doesn't look right you being the one to block him. Interaction bans are decided either by the community or arbcom. Generally both require evidence of actual disruptive behaviour. I am happy to have my actions reviewed by either and will always respect their consensus.

I think this discussion is getting more than a little fractured. I feel that I have responded to your concerns about administrative involvement and how I came upon this edit war on my talk page[1]. While I have interacted with this editor in an administrative capacity in the past I don't see anything that would constitute inappropriate involvement as we define it. The relevant part of the administrative policy is WP:INVOLVED which talks about when I must recuse myself.

The short version is that prior administrative interaction with a user does not constitute involvement with a user that would require me to recuse myself. If you think I have some sort of bias that precludes me from dealing with this user then please present evidence of this to me or another admin for consideration. Thanks for the response. See, that's part of my criticism though, on a website which is essentially an encyclopedia, a content building website, that level of administrative debate and providing such evidence should never really be needed. It would be very time consuming to propose something, and it's time which would be better put into content. I've always said that "common sense" should be applied to any situation on wikipedia rather than set rules and any decision made revolve primarily around content. When I see you and Cassianto bickering and then a block I look at it from a content production point of view, is this a good or a bad thing for content and does it improve the site? When you look at it from this perspective you'll understand more why I disapprove of the warring and blocking. I think it would create a better atmosphere if you two avoided each other, and that you're intelligent enough Chillum to say "Right I tried to patch things up with this editor, it didn't seem to work long term. Perhaps it's best if I distanced myself from him for the sake of the peace of the site". If you did just that I'm sure there's no shortage of other admins to carry out punishments for certain things like 3RR. While I appreciate that you have reiterated your position I don't think you have substantiated your concerns about my involvement. I feel that edit warring does call for a response from an uninvolved admin, and policy agrees. Warnings tend to be most effective with users who are not aware of the rules, I think this user has a lot of experience and knows how things work.

You have provided little in the form of evidence, just a quote without a diff. It is difficult to respond to quotes from me when you don't provide a diff, I do a lot around here and I can't remember every conversation I have had. Was being religious and worked on church stubs. ;) Still have about 3 to go, but I stopped in the churchyard where Joseph Parry is buried and began working on his article. Uncovered an amazing fact re: Aberystwyth yesterday. The organ Parry played the hymn on for the first time is still around. The building is no longer a church, but a doctors' surgery and space for a local theatre group. The developers tried to sell the old organ, but there were no takers; they dedided to leave it where it was and simply wall the organ in. The organ is technically in the surgery. One thing I think it might be particularly useful for is, for instance, minor characters in works of fiction and the like, and, maybe, for indicating which articles which might exist somewhere out in wikia or similar might be notable and substantive enough for inclusion here. There seem to be an awful lot of wikia sites, including some of only 2 articles or so (like one on Zoroastrianism - I checked) and some other wikis, and at least one at http://www.xfamily.org/index.php/Main_Page seems to me to maybe contain some articles which might be welcome here, if they were made a bit less, well, inflammatory. Ssven, I know. As I'm progressing through the book I'm increasingly seeing that they focus excessively on his alleged homosexuality and relationship with Scott. I'm ignoring most of it and only using what I think is useful. If it's a strong claim I'll always say Higham and Moseley claim. Perhaps it wasn't the best book to start with but this rather reminds me of RO and the Kelley book. Hey, I'm going about what I do in otherwise good spirit, I didn't start the silly accusations. If he doesn't want to be made fun of, stay well away from my talk page and filing such things and I'll do the same. He's a clear troublemaker who should be admonished for trying to cause trouble. Even now with the ANI report he's trying to drag my name through the dirt. "some of which are of questionable encyclopedic value and are written in manner that promotes the subject" is a filthy lie in particular, I would never write anything for wikipedia which I didn't think met general content guidelines or wasn't reasonably neutral/well written, not even if I got paid $1 million! I watched it a month ago and still can't stop raving about it. She's really grown on me and User:Ssven2/Anne Bancroft References is something I've created for a future GA. She really led an almost peaceful, controversial-free life after marrying Mel Brooks.

There's one page here from The Italian American Experience: An Encyclopedia. This book OCLC 22805939 seems to have a few pages but only has a few snippets online, and it does not seem to be very common in British libraries (you'll need to check for Chennai...). This book OCLC 491806826 seems to get referenced often, and is in more British libraries, but I've no idea of how many pages it has. A google search of "Anne Bancroft actress biography" throws up lots of pages, but I suspect that these are mostly fairly short, and also quite likely to be derived from Wikipedia. Good luck! GA standards for contested articles edit

I have seen some discussion elsewhere, on user talk pages, regarding the possibility of nominating an article which has extant quality tags on it for GA status. I remember at least once before when an article which was contested passed GA standards, even though there were some serious questions regarding whether the content of the article accurately represented the current best academic thinking on the topic. Has there ever been any discussion among the GA reviewers regarding how to deal with GA nominees where there might be significant questions regarding WP:MINORITY and/or WP:FRINGE issues? The big word there is "should", unfortunately. I found one article years ago which was stable because I refused to engage in an edit war, and confined my comments to the talk page, all of which were, basically, ignored, so it was still "stable". Also, in some cases, like the more contested new religious movements which are under discretionary sanctions, one side or another can get burned out or blocked out rather easily. There are a few other cases where maybe people get tired of fighting as well. I don't suppose they happen that often, but it is a situation where one side which has "won" in a dispute in some way could take advantage of that and get something a higher regard than it really deserves.
