Dakshina KannadaDakshina Kannada district – As per, WP:CONSISTENT with all other articles of the districts in India. Hemant DabralTalk 03:23, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oppose Comment Agree
Hi Hemant DabralTalk,
There is no need to suffix 'district' to Dakshina Kannada. The suffix only becomes necessary when there is a city/town with the same name. In such scenarios, the 'district' suffix is required to avoid ambiguity.
Examples include Mysore/Mysore district, Dharwad/Dharwad district, Kolar/Kolar district, Bidar/Bidar district, Ernakulam/Ernakulam district, Coimbatore/Coimbatore district, etc. and several others. Here, there are cities/towns with those names as well. So the 'district' suffixes are added to their corresponding district names.
But, in scenarios like Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, etc., there is no city/town with these names.
Hence the renaming and move to 'Dakshina Kannada district' are inappropriate and not required.
Thanks and Cheers,

Aviator423, it would mean that we'll have to move hundreds of articles back to their "name only titles" (excluding district suffix) also, since there are hundreds of districts in India with unique names and having no other location/city named after their name. For example: East Champaran district, West Champaran district, East Singhbhum district, West Singhbhum district, East Sikkim district, West Sikkim district, North Sikkim district, South Sikkim district, North Goa district, South Goa district, East Garo Hills district, West Garo Hills district, East Khasi Hills district, West Khasi Hills district, East Jaintia Hills district, West Jaintia Hills district, East Karbi Anglong district, West Karbi Anglong district, Ri Bhoi district, Dima Hasao district, Tehri Garhwal district, Pauri Garhwal district, Udham Singh Nagar district, Bastar district, Lahaul and Spiti district, Sirmaur district, North and Middle Andaman district, South Andaman district, Nicobar district, Uttar Dinajpur district, Dakshin Dinajpur district, Purba Medinipur district, Paschim Medinipur district, Purba Bardhaman district, Paschim Bardhaman district, Kutch district, Lakhimpur Kheri district, Cachar district, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, Gautam Buddh Nagar district and many many more. 07:17, 4 May 2020 (UTC) That comment by Hemant Dabral [1]
If Wikipedia follows the suffix convention, then you may go ahead with the rename and move of this district. But linguistically, the 'district' suffix is redundant when no other location/city/town exists with the district names.

Also, I am now not opposing the rename and move decisions.

I agree with the renaming. Dakshina Kannada could be the name for a region for someone who doesn't already know. Adding "District" makes that clearer. C1MM (talk) 02:32, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi C1MM, there isn't any region other than the district having the name 'Dakshina Kannada'. It is unique. But I will agree with the move and renaming. Aviator423 (talk) 05:09, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

There are a number of similar RM proposals which I have suggested [3] [4] might be best all discussed together here. Andrewa (talk) 12:00, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Andrewa: There is a discussion at the Talk:List of districts in India page regarding this matter. You can post your comment there. — Hemant Dabral (📞) 21:38, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK, let's discuss there. What do you suggest we do with the many individual RMs you have proposed? My suggestion is to close them all as not moved pending the outcome of that discussion, and open reopen any as a multi-move as necessary. Andrewa (talk) 02:49, 13 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
