I had thought it was "lee-ber" until I picked up a copy of "Ill-Met In Lankmar" where the correct pronunciation is mentioned in the foreword. (This is somewhat embarrassing - German is my mother tongue though I've spoken primarily English for years now, and the book claims that the long-I pronunciation is the "original German" fashion of saying it.) Revision

The page has expanded so much that it has become unwieldy. Anyone besides me up for reorganizing it? -- Career, early influences, dry spells -- Leiber had the November 1959 issue of Fantastic devoted to only his new stories, and a Special Author issue of F&SF appeared in 1969, with the usual new work, appreciation, bibliography, etc. Should these be added? I have nothing to add or subtract at this time, just a comment on the parenthetical in the 6th paragraph of "Life": while I absolutely adore the phrase "fallow interregnum", the latter of the two words hardly seems appropriate, beyond being a tenuous synonym for "period". Unwieldy? Perhaps a bit, but I found it reasonably complete, well written and unbiased (visited it for the first time today). I don't think the 'cleanup' tag on the page is warranted; to me it signals "do not trust this article" or "kooks have taken over this article" — and that's definitely not the case. I took out some POV passages. Mainly what it needs now are some subheads--but it's hard to put them in the way it's organized now. It needs a little reshuffling first.

Change War ??

As it stands today, it means "The Big Time is set up like a play,

even though its background is a war across time and space".

Or are you trying to say Change War is not explained in the article?

Fafhrd stories

Two Sought Adventure is in the collections section, although it is a Fafhrd & Gray mouser collection later expanded to one of the Swords books. Bazaar of the Bizarre is also a F&GM-only collection, as is Rime Isle. And Ill Met in Lankhmar [the White Wolf 1995 compendium] was peculiarly split in paperback such that (eg) Thieves' House (pb, 2001) includes 10 stories, but not split as they were in the original collections, thus becoming a "new" F&GM collection. The Wikipedia page on Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser should perhaps be updated (especially in regard of compendia of the novels), and referenced from the section on the Leiber page to keep things wieldy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.105.47.250 (talk) 13:27, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

I provided the heading "Fafhrd stories" for this material previously inserted somewhere above. I wonder whether it is acceptable in this and neighboring articles. "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" is a mouthful and we currently use several short versions --without 'the' and/or without 'Gray' and/or without 'stories'. (And once 'Grey' for 'Gray' in this biography, which should be fixed. If Leiber or publishers or critics have been inconsistent, say so.)

Split bibilography

I believe it remains too long, given that the section carries a {main} link to Fritz Leiber bibliography.

If it is deemed suitable to list all books by Leiber, including those published after his death, and to exclude all shorter works, then the heading "Selected works" should be replaced (perhaps "Books by Leiber") and supplemented by a one-line preface that explains the scope.

Regarding the short works dated 1934 and 1935 (covered in the text and ref, per ISFDB): Our only list of short works is Fritz Leiber bibliography#Short stories, a list of titles by year, no other bibliographic data, which begins in 1939. We list no other short works, only the short stories. Why is the bibliography so incomplete and without explanation?

In the text we call that 1939 story his "first professional sale[citation needed]" (probably tagged by me). If the bibliography scope is professional sales that should be stated. Offhand it seems to me a poor choice.

Inaccuracies in many places

I have spotted a number of inaccuracies in the bibliographic listing of works. I've already corrected two of these, but I will make some more adjustments when I spot things. I also think that Conjure Wife needs a section of its own. It is too important a work to be swept up with everything else the way it is now. Does anyone object? As it stands the synopsis of the book is wrong (it is taken from one of the cover blurbs) and there is no noting of the changes that the novel has gone through over time. Even the film information is not fully accurate for this novel. Eluard (talk) 03:14, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

"Sword and sorcery"

I have removed the statement that Lieber coined the phrase "sword and sorcery", as this was actually Michael Moorcock. MikeEagling (talk) 14:45, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

MikeEagling deleted the parenthetical note from "sword and sorcery genre (a term coined by Leiber)"[1] but did not touch the observation, where we mention SAGA, "He is credited with inventing the term Sword and Sorcery for the particular sub-genre of epic fantasy exemplified by his Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stories."

I tagged the latter {{citation needed}}.

Earliest stories

Previously we said early in section Life that Unknown 1939 ("Two Sought Adventure", not named) was "his first published story", ref Anderson. I changed it to say that he introduced F&GM there (and to identify title, month, and editor), and I added coverage of six 1934/1935 stories just above, ref ISFDB (Notes).

In section Writing career we call Two Sought Adventure "Leiber's first professional sale", without ref. That needs a source. If/when we learn more, the prose needs revision at least in the first instance.

ISFDB identifies about 20 Untitled items of short fiction by their opening words, sometimes also with a 1937 to 1941 date.(see the end of section Shortfiction) Probably it will be valuable to examine the 2010 collection Strange Wonders and expand coverage of the Leiber's early period in this biography. --P64 (talk) 17:05, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
