Infobox about political career Suggestion

There are currently two separate infoboxes, one at the lead and another at the section Arnold Schwarzenegger#Political Career. Since the first infobox contains only personal information, why not merge both infoboxes? Seems like they overlap, too, as the second infobox contains personal information such as his birth. Also, should the political career infobox be moved/copied to Political career of Arnold Schwarzenegger? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Llightex (talk) 14:50, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Apropos Personal life

Maybe Schwarzenegger's relationship with the physical therapist Heather Milligan (*1974) should be mentioned in the section "Personal life" -- after all -- other Hollywood biographies include such information. cf. here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2765520/Arnold-Schwarzenegger-holds-hands-fraulein-Heather-Milligan-attend-Oktoberfest-Germany.html 87.145.101.11 (talk) 10:32, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

At this point, there is not much beyond gossip. Not encyclopedic yet. Chunk5Darth (talk) 15:36, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

No legitimate source for claim that Arnold Schwarzenegger's Austrian accent was not considered tough.

This claim: "Ironically he was not allowed to dub his own voice for German versions of The Terminator because his Austrian accent was not considered tough." has this source: http://blog.esl-languages.com/en/esl/celebrities-speak-languages/ However, this source no longer exists at this location, and I'm not sure that it's clear that a blog is a legitimate source for this information without a citation to another source that should have been cited in the first place. Indeed, the article actually does still exist here, but it does not cite where it gets its facts from. They could be mistaken. Bamatrama (talk) 13:16, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Just to note, I would like to remove this claim as well as the citation. However, I think that this action requires discussion or justification on the talk page first. Bamatrama (talk) 15:35, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

I was bold. Google search yielded nothing. Chunk5Darth (talk) 16:58, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Nationality

What's notable about Ahnie is that a good chunk of his early career was as an Austrian immigrant. His parents' nationality is not important to anything. "Austrian-born American" is a very precise and well-constructed description, and has been the status quo; "Austrian and American", however, is not only clumsy, but also implies that he has a career in Austria, which he doesn't. Skyerise, please make a case for changing the status quo, per WP:BRD as well as the spirit of collabotarive editing. Chunk5Darth (talk) 19:15, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Austrian-born has an ambiguous meaning. It is not precise and well-constructed, because it is usually read by the average reader referring to an accident of birth rather than as referring to a dual national. That is, the most common reading of "Austrian-born American" is actually the birth of an American citizen to American parents who just happen to be living or stationed in Austria. This wording has been replaced by 'and' on other articles for precisely this reason (that it depreciates the subject's actual birth nationality): for example Charlize Theron, after discussion on the article talk page. The same arguments apply here. This is a simple improvement in grammar which removes ambiguity and should not be subject to a edit war but someone who mistakenly believe that they own the article. Skyerise (talk) 19:23, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
See this RfC on the issue. Skyerise (talk) 19:26, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
You should really chill out on the personal attacks and ignoring the discussion, namely being pointed to WP:BRD twice and reiterating the "ownage" accusation in spite of it. Also, other articles may provide a good example, but are not a reason to break guidelines. As I already explained, his parents' nationality is not notable, while his being an Austrian immigrant is. I also happen to disagree with the consensus on Theron, but we are at a different article right now. If it truly bothers you, I suggest you raise the issue to change the general rule on famous people, whose career is in the US but their birthplace is elsewhere. Chunk5Darth (talk) 19:34, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Actually, I was involved in creating the current wording of WP:OPENPARA and therefore know its intent. We are supposed to be using (in general) the single most-recent nationality held at the time that the subject became notable. By strict reading of the rules, this article should just say "American". My second edit was a compromise that removed ambiguity while leaving both nationalities. How did you attempt to compromise? Skyerise (talk) 19:59, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
It is not about compromising, it's about doing the right thing. You might be missing the purpose of this encyclopedia altogether. Chunk5Darth (talk) 20:03, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Using an ambiguous grammatical construction in an encyclopedia article is never the "right thing". Especially in the lead sentence! I've been here ten years, I know what I am doing. Skyerise (talk) 20:11, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
If you truly know what you are doing, you should know that your behavior is tendentious and disruptive, and the very belief that having been here for 10 years gives you the automatic right to go against the established process for gaining consensus is the very essence of WP:OWN. There is nothing ambiguous about "Austrian-born American", as it is exactly how people know him. His parents, on the other hand, are irrelevant to his notability. Chunk5Darth (talk) 20:32, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

But he's not an "Austrian-born American", he's a dual national: both an Austrian citizen and anAmerican citizen. That's a standard grammatical conjunction: and. The two different wordings have different connotations and one of those connotations is just plain wrong. So we use the clearly grammatical, unambiguous wording. How could you have a problem with that? You have given no arguments about why the use of and is inferior to the use of -born. I've clearly described the problem with the latter. Not even going to try to rebut me or give actual arguments supporting your position? Perhaps you don't have any except "Wah wah previous 'stable' version wah wah". Skyerise (talk) 20:39, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Already explained more than once: his current Austrian citizenship is irrelevant to his notability, but his being a former Austrian immigrant is. His parents are also irrelevant. None of the details that you have been emphasizing are relevant. Therefore, the wording of WP:OPENPARA fits the current version, because only the fact that he is an American personality who was born in Austria is relevant to his notability. But by all means, continue the cheap shots. Chunk5Darth (talk) 21:00, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Razzies

Ain't it kinda notable that Ahnie's received the 2005 Razzie Award for Worst Razzie Loser of Our First 25 Years for being the one actor possibly most-nominated for a razzie without ever actually getting one? It's not necessarily disparaging, I mean, for many his "wooden" acting is part of his appeal as a cheesy action hero (very much like Adam West, actually) who's not been above parodying his own "wooden" persona with films such as Last Action Hero and how within the Terminator franchise, people keep trying to make the Terminator "blend in", often to rather hilarious results because T-800 just doesn't get it right. --80.187.110.67 (talk) 01:11, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

It should say that he is an Austrian and American. I am confused as to why it says that he is an Austrian-born American rather than Austrian and American since he was born and raised in Austria and did not movie to the United States until he was 21. He also holds citizenship for both countries, so I do not see why that makes him simply "Austrian-born". That seems inaccurate. "Austrian-born American" would imply that he was only born in Austria but raised in the United States as an American throughout his entire life, including his childhood, which is definitely not his case. He is an immigrant who came to the United States as a 21 year old, knowing very little English, which is stated in this article.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (/ˈʃwɔːrtsənɛɡər/; German: [ˈaɐnɔlt ˈalɔʏs ˈʃvaɐtsənɛɡɐ]; born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian and American actor, model, producer, director, activist, businessman, investor, writer, philanthropist, former professional bodybuilder, and politician. Schwarzenegger served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 until 2011.

There seems to be consensus at § Nationality that the current form is fine. Stickee (talk) 00:48, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

I agree that "Austrian-born American" is incorrect, as it suggests that he was born in Austria as an American citizen (e.g. to American parents living in Austria at the time). He is an Austrian-born Austrian who later became naturalised as an American citizen, and therefore holds the citizenship of both countries. "Austrian-American" would be a more accurate description. Unless, of course, he has surrendered his Austrian citizenship, in which case a source for that needs to be provided. As for the consensus, consensus is not always correct. 82.171.253.241 (talk) 11:47, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

So it looks like a previous edit ( 07:10, 21 January 2018‎ Rizky88 ) added ""Governator" redirects here. For the Green Day song, see American Idiot (song)." I found this super confusing and thought at first it was an insult/vandalism being concealed as if it were a proper edit. The Green Day song Governator is a B side released on the digital deluxe version of the Greenday *album* american idiot, the two songs are separate works.

I suggest "For the Green Day song of the same name, see American Idiot"

Or maybe just remove the reference completely, since it's a b-side that was released only on the digital deluxe release and there actually doesn't seem to be any info about it in the album article besides what I typed above. 216.168.113.98 (talk) 17:10, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

There is no citation for the purported middle names of Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger. The extant citation is false: https://www.nytimes.com/1997/09/30/nyregion/chronicle-367451.html (CHRONICLE By NADINE BROZAN, [Tuesday] SEPT. 30, 1997) gives no name whatsoever, not even a first name. Here is the item in its entirely:

It's another son for MARIA SHRIVER and ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER. Ms. Shriver gave birth on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27, 1997) to a nine-and-a-half-pound boy in Los Angeles, Mr. Schwarzenegger's publicity agent, Catherine Olim, said yesterday. A name has yet to be announced.

Ms. Shriver, a contributing co-anchor for Dateline NBC, went home yesterday. The couple have three other children: Katherine, 8; Christina, 6, and Patrick, 4.

Lead sentence

Currently, the lead sentence read: "Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (/ˈʃvɑːrtsnɛɡər/;[1][a] German: [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈʃvaɐ̯tsn̩ˌʔɛɡɐ]; born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian-American actor, filmmaker, businessman, author, philanthropist, activist, politician, and former professional bodybuilder and powerlifter."

Anyone want to try editing this mess into something more readable? WP:BLPLEAD has guidelines about what lead sentences should look like.

Divorce status

The article states that Schwarzenegger's divorce from Shriver has been finalized. It cites an article from Architectural Digest, which doesn't seem like a rock-solid source for this type of information. A quick scan of a Google search (https://www.google.com/search?q=arnold+maria+shriver+divorce+finalized&safe=active&client=firefox-b-1-d&sxsrf=ACYBGNQSbW34G5dUR-65eGaYkvt7j8MxBQ:1572932396501&ei=LAvBXYiTHs3n5gK7mrLoCA&start=10&sa=N&ved=0ahUKEwiI2f7lrdLlAhXNs1kKHTuNDI0Q8tMDCNcB&biw=1024&bih=482) leaves me fairly convinced that the divorce has NOT been finalized. Arnolds height

I met Arnold the summer of 1983 at a restaurant called The Rose in Venice CA. I saw him and his protégé at the time "christian yanicht" {sic} having lunch. He was in line at the counter placing his order - I'm 6'-6" and towered over him, estimating his height at 5'-10." It's cafeteria style seating so I sat next to him and we chatted. After a few minutes he excused himself to the bathroom, I continued chatting with Christian who was very quite and only nodded... When Arnold came back he said: in his Teutonic "he doesn't speak any English..." :-) We chatted some more and parted ways...  :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:14A:600:F830:20FB:EEA:C354:85CC (talk) 04:29, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

The first sentence ("Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is an Austrian-American actor, businessman, and former politician and professional bodybuilder.") has an 'and' before "former politician" that should be removed. So, change the first sentence to: "Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is an Austrian-American actor, businessman, former politician and professional bodybuilder." Childhood, Father, Growing up in Postwar Austria

In a recent twitter post (1/10/21)[1], Schwarzenegger stated: "Now, I've never shared this so publicly because it is a painful memory. But my father would come home drunk once or twice a week, and he would scream and hit us and scare my mother. I didn't hold him totally responsible because our neighbor was doing the same thing to his family and so was the next neighbor over. I heard it with my own ears and saw it with my own eyes. They were in physical pain from the shrapnel in their bodies and in emotional pain from what they saw or did. It all started with lies, and lies, and lies, and intolerance." The story is repeated in several news outlets.[2][3][4][5][6][7] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.164.209.158 (talk) 04:12, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

So he's not divorced. I can find multiple articles from 2021 confirming it is still in the works and it's bizarre that we are using entertainment articles when divorce certificates are public record and easily obtainable. This is the link for their court case

Ethnic background

There doesn't seem to be any credible proof that Schwarzenegger was part Czech. This seems to only come from tabloids like Prague Reporter and Nový čas. Schwarzenegger's family seems to be German-speaking, and Schwarzenegger has never mentioned his mother being Czech. Unlike his father, there doesn't really seem to be anything known about his mother's family history. While Jadrny does sound Czech, this isn't anything special. Most Austrians have some degree of Czech ancestry, and likewise most Czechs have some degree of German ancestry. For example, Ivan Lendl has a German sounding name, but according to all sources he's just Czech. We can't just assume Aurelia is Czech just because her family name appears to be. Same is true for the apparent great-grandfather Mach; he could've been a Sudeten German. Unless Schwarzenegger or a more credible source provides definitive proof that Arnold was part Czech, I don't think the article should just assume he is. --NHV140 (talk) 04:53, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
