Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons - Help me build a table!

Hi guys, recently I've been constructing a table/list of signatories for the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons article. I've completed the table (I've made it sortable too!) and all that's needed now is to input the data. So far I've added about 34 countries out of 108, if anyone wants to help me I've created a simple tutorial at the top of the table's sandbox here. Ryan4314 (talk) 13:36, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:52, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Wikiproject NATO

Hi there, I've recently proposed the creation of a NATO Wikiproject, as I imagine it would be somewhat similar to this project, I'm dropping a note here for anyone who would like to join and/or participate in the discussion about the project. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Discussion about using UN Member States names as article titles

There is a discussion at the Naming Conventions (geographic names) project page on the use of UN names in article titles that may interest editors of this and related articles. The discussion was instigated by myself as a possible route to standardising the approach to the names of articles of nation-states in Wikipedia. I would be very interested to have more views on the subject from those who are familiar with the detail of UN naming conventions, UN-related articles, etc. Thanks. United Nations articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the United Nations articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

United Nations main article

I'm finishing off a top-to-bottom rewrite of the United Nations article. I still have a few things to do (most notably updating the lead), but assuming there's anybody left at this project, I thought I'd check in here to see if anybody wants to take a look and/or join in. I'm hoping to nominate it for GA sometime in the next few weeks, and I'll also be starting work on UN Security Council in the meantime if anyone's interested in collaborating. There was apparently a domain switch on the UN official document system, and they didn't set up any sort of forwarding, so there are now dead links littering wikipedia. There is a discussion on an admin noticeboard regarding Palestine's membership in the UN regional groupings. The discussion is verging on becoming stale, and I'm requesting comments from editors with some background knowledge on the subject. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Um... Just a clarification... WP:NORN is not an "admin" noticeboard. It is a community noticeboard. All are welcome to participate. Most of those responding there are not admins (and the opinions of those who happen to be admins have no more weight than opinions of non-admins). NORN gives you advice and a sense of community consensus ... not admin "rulings" that are official. Blueboar (talk) 17:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Venezuela and the Millennium Development Goals

I plan on contributing a section to the Venezuela Wikipedia page. The section I would add would focus on Venezuela's progress on the Millennium Development Goals. Venezuela continues to be one of the most talked about nations because of its president Hugo Chavez and his political views. Chavez has implemented what many consider to be "socialist" policies in order to combat issues such as poverty and hunger. However, even with international criticism, Venezuela has made significant progress in meeting the goals. If progress is evident in Venezuela, then it will serve as a model country, a beacon of hope, for other developing and developed nations. Since the Millennium Development Goals are a United Nations initiative, I would like to link my article contribution to this WikiProject. This WikiProject will allow my article to be more sound in relation to the Millennium Development Goals. I would also appreciate any feedback you might have on the article topic and the article itself. It is necessary to look at an individual country's progress on the MDGs in order to evaluate the global initiative on the whole. Stnicks007 (talk) 22:46, 9 March 2012 (UTC)Stnicks007.

Self determination

Saw a request for review of this article back in 2006 in the international law WP. Didn't have time to review it myself now, but agreed it's subject fell within IL. Though I haven't been involved with this WP, given the UN charter, I didn't see how the subject would not be of interest to the UN WP, so I flagged UN as yes in the banner. The article currently has a C class from prior reviews. I set importance as high, but would not disagree with a top importance. IMHO (talk) 19:54, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Liason re license of UN texts on WMF projects

In many topic domains, UN source documents are ideal in meeting wp:WORLDWIDE. Further, many of the works produced by UN agencies (I'm principally thinking of UNESCO and the WHO) are under licenses that are intended to encourage verbatim noncommercial copying, similar to the intent of CC-BY-NC. Of course this non-commercial clause is not acceptible directly for use on WP. They hold out the possibility of other uses by permission upon specific request, but this is of course problematic for a pseudonymous WP editor to do, not to mention somewhat of a process delay problem. It occurs to me that Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation uses are in line with the educational missions of these agencies and would likely be approved, if only we can work out either an efficient process or a blanket approval for use of UN published material on WMF projects.

Presently, an editor seeking and gaining such permission would have to do so under their real name. Is there a volunteer who would be interested and willing to take on such liason, to try and work out a method to permit us to make better use of UN materials?. LeadSongDog come howl! 15:47, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

I'd be happy to do that (since my real name is fairly obvious anyway).
UN source documents are potentially very valuable, in areas where en.wikipedia's quality is rather hit-and-miss... bobrayner (talk) 16:12, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, that willingness is encouraging :-) I gather from user talk:Moonriddengirl that it may be necessary, for WMF purposes, to persue permission to use our existing CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. In that case the issue will likely be how to streamline the request/release process. We'd likely want a way to establish that specific WP user accounts were authorized to act for those UN agencies in this capacity. Perhaps a Wikipedia space list for the administration of specific requests and responses would work. A request might just consist of a citation to the work (or part of that work) sought, identification of the article that needs it, and a short explanation of why the specific source is needed. A reply might then be just a link to the released source and signature by such an authorized user account, or a "Sorry, release of this source under CC-BY-SA 3.0 is not possible." No doubt some quick templates could help with this. LeadSongDog come howl! 17:31, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Hmm. I'll try to put some pieces in place this weekend. Would like to try keeping it lightweight (whilst still satisfying the copyright/procedural requirements).
  • Presumably different UN agencies will each have their own contact point and potentially a slightly different stance on licensing and reuse, so a table which lists different bodies in the UN-verse would be helpful.
  • Do other language wikipedias have any similar initiative in place? (I haven't found anything with a very quick cursory search) A lot of UN docs will be available in multiple languages, particularly these, which may be valuable for other wikipedias. Unfortunately my French is poor and I have 2-digit vocabularies in the others.
  • I think we need a distinction between "push" and "pull". If it's possible to agree on reuse of a category/collection of material which is later used in articles, then process delay isn't really a concern. On the other hand if an editor puts up their hand and says "I need document X for article Y" then process delay is a problem.
bobrayner (talk) 13:34, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
  • I like the idea of building an overview table, ideally somewhere in Wikipedia space. It's maintainable, will have an edit history and talkpage. Scalable through subpages if necessary. Suggest table will need fields for UN Agency (wikilink), Content type, Copyright (url), Request (wikilink or difflink), Discussion (wikilink), Permission (url or difflink), status (text), comment (text). Any others?
  • It's probably best to get acquainted by exploring simple one-time requests for each agency before addressing any general principles. I'm thinking the UN News Centre press releases might be a good first choice.
  • This copyright statement on UN News-related material on un.org is very liberal: attribute and notify.
  • The media accreditation process has the additional benefit of access to the UN library, but does require some jumping of hoops. It's possible someone at WikiNews has already figured out how to address the volunteer aspect of these. Of course it may not be necessary for a purely electronic correspondence.
  • You might also want to investigate the UN Office for Partnerships. They may be able to help us avoid pitfalls. LeadSongDog come howl! 16:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
I have been in not very fruitful discussion with the WHO for a couple of years now. They state they they will not release content under a Creative Commons license and have come up with a couple of reasons why (CC is of national jurisdiction while the WHO is an International Governmental Organization, after I mention that other IGOs use CC they stop responding). I have been asked by a journal to write a piece on this issue and am currently working on something (would also be open to a co author). I have also informed the WHO that I am working on this.
They are of course not a uniform body. This gentleman from the ICD11 division is very interested in working with us. I however make it fairly clear that our participation would be linked to copyright of the final product being open. Slavery and Human Trafficking

I'm not a participant in this WP, but have sporadically been involved with WP International Relations. I recently discovered that the pages dealing with both Human Trafficking and Slavery were never included in that project. I added the International Relations/Law banner, but have also taken the liberty to add UN as well, since they are clearly topics dealt with by the UN. Right now, WP:IL's members activity is considered good if even sporadic lately, so if some members of this project could take a look at the pages, that would be great. Stand Up and Take Action

Stand Up and Take Action is the name of an annual global mobilization coordinated by the United Nations Millennium Campaign. Isn't it strange that what is perhaps the largest demonstration in human history (175 million people took part in 2009) has no follow-up whatsoever in Wikipedia? All coverage of that progressively bigger annual event ends up in 2010 without any explanation... As I wrote in the talk page of the article, this article has no news after 2010. Why? I repeatedly tried to ask people at the UN or at the sites mentioned in the article page, but failed to get a response! Does anybody here can help? --Robert Daoust (talk) 03:23, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Problem with the Template of the UN

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:United_Nations
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:United_Nations

There is a certain discreapancy between this official page of the UN
http://www.un.org/en/aboutun/structure/pdfs/UN%20system%20chart_lettercolor_2013.pdf
and that abovementioned template.
For example
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_specialized_agencies_of_the_United_Nations
has been included in the template whereas we don't have neither list of functional and regional commissions nor link to them from the template although both of this "groups" somehow correlate with ECOSOC.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Economic_and_Social_Council

But all that has been included in the template
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:ECOSOC

Probably we should include in Template:United_Nations all of the things included in ECOSOC:template (not just "specialized agencies" and). Or we should just exclude something from it Template:United_Nations?
Otherwise that can misslead a little?

LoN Paris Peace Conference reparations

Hi, I have already posted this elsewhere, but have so far gained little feedback. Hopefully, as this is somewhat UN-related, members of the project may have additional information.

I am currently working on the World War I reparations article. I have hit a bump on Bulgarian reparations. Thus far, I have established the following:

1 - Treaty of Neuilly established that Bulgaria had to pay 2.250 billion Gold francs in reparations.(Treaty of Neuilly, Article 121)
2 - In 1923, the Bulgarian reparation sum was "revised downwards" to 550 million gold francs "plus a lump sum payment of 25 million francs for occupation costs".(Marks, Myths of Reparations, pp. 234-5)
3 - Between the treaty signing and April 1922, 173 million gold francs were paid (1)
4 - Between 1925 and 1929, Bulgaria paid a further 41 million gold francs, before reparations were abandoned at the Lausanne conference of 1932.(2)

Does anyone have any additional information (including sources) to expand the above, especially in the following two areas: 1 - Do the above figures represent total Bulgarian reparation payment, and if not what were they?
2 - Did an event, such as the Dawes Plan for example, occur to revise down the Bulgarian reparation payments?

I will continue to search for information, but any help provided would be much appreciated.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 13:51, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject United Nations at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

CfD discussion for societies and cultures

There is a discussion going on right now at WP:Categories for discussion that involves changing the category names for all cultures, from, for example, "Afghan society" to "Society of Afghanistan". I can see that next will be changing "German culture" to "Culture of Germany" and the like. This would be for all ethnicities, nationalities and cultures.
If you would like to weigh in, the conversation is occurring at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 March 27#Society by country.

Hard Choices, new article about book on humanitarian intervention

I've created a new article about the book on humanitarian intervention, titled, Hard Choices: Moral Dilemmas in Humanitarian Intervention.

Help with suggesting additional secondary sources would be appreciated at the article's talk page, at Talk:Hard Choices (Moore book).

Thank you,

Wow, that's quite impressive - and on a much-needed topic. I'll try to help out, although you surely have more relevant sources to hand than me... bobrayner (talk) 16:02, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

Gateway Protection Programme FAC

The Gateway Protection Programme article is currently a featured article candidate. The last time it was nominated, the review was archived due to a lack of comments, so I would be grateful if interested editors could take a read of the article and submit comments to the review. It's a topical issue at the moment, and you might even learn something about refugee resettlement to the UK (or the lack of it)! Cordless Larry (talk) 20:52, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Looking for feedback on my funding proposal to work with UNESCO

Hi all

I’m looking for feedback and endorsement for my Wikimedia Foundation PEG grant to be Wikimedian in Residence at UNESCO. I’d very much appreciate if you would have a look, I want to include as many different projects and languages as possible and connect editors in each country with local UNESCO partners. The most relevant goals to Wikipedia are:

1. Train UNESCO and its partner organisations to contribute to Wikimedia projects: Provide UNESCO and its partners with the skills, tools, resources and connections to contribute to Wikimedia projects in a meaningful, measurable and sustainable way. To integrate into the Wikimedia community both online and by matching them with local Wikimedia organisations and volunteers for in person support and collaboration. The project will create and improve content receiving 100,000,000 views per year on Wikimedia projects, educate 1000 people in over 200 organisations to learn more about Wikimedia projects. This will include 500 newly registered users trained to contribute to Wikimedia projects and 500 articles formally reviewed by experts.
2. Make content from the archives of UNESCO and its partners available on Wikimedia projects: This project will facilitate the upload of 30,000 images, audio files, videos, data and other content to Wikimedia projects from UNESCO archives (24,000 images), UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and other sources including 10 organisations changing their content license to be Wikimedia compatible, a completed pilot project is outlined in the Goal section.

I ran a pilot project that resulted in the images found in the Wikimedia Commons category Images from the archive of UNESCO, here are a few examples:

If you think this is a worthwhile project please click this link and then click the endorse button.

Many thanks

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:25, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Review requested

I'd like someone to review my work regarding the fifth day of voting in the United Nations Security Council election, 1979, because something doesn't add up here, and can't figure it out. I've been working from two sources: the official transcripts from the General Assembly meetings where voting took place, and this document published by the Costa Rican delegation to the UN.

At the end of the fourth day of voting, the President of the General Assembly said that they conducted 40 rounds of voting up to that point. This agrees with the result I had copied from the transcripts and with Costa Rican document. At the end of the fifth, the President made similar statement, stating that there had been 58 rounds, which again matches again matches the Costa Rican document. However, I count 19 rounds of voting on the fifth day in the official transcripts for a total 59. So something isn't right here, I don't know what it is. You'll find the relevant transcripts here and here. Your help is much appreciated. Sir Sputnik (talk) 20:10, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject United Nations/Archive 4/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject United Nations.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject United Nations, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Not sure where this should go so I'm tossing the lion in the ring; WHY CAN I NOT FIND ANYTHING WHICH REFERS TO THE UN's "CORE GROUP" who have been around since at least 2013 from what I can document. I have been in attendance on Dec 15th, 2015 "The Price of LGBT Exclusion" event at UNHQ & the "Ending Violence and Discrimination against LGBTI Persons" discussion during High Level week September 20, 2017. Here is one link:Ending Violence and Discrimination against LGBTI Persons event on Wednesday 20 September and this is the oldest I see in a quick look. http://un.mfa.hr/en/news-and-announcements/un-lgbt-core-group-(of-which-croatia-is-a-member)-to-host-lgbt-event-celebrating,11324.html As you can see, it has a unique group of organizations involved, and I think it desrves a stub or something. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:59, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

RfC regarding Venezuelan politics

FYI. RfC available for comment:

Talk:Fabiana_Rosales#RfC_on_Juan_Guaido's_wife

This is related to Venezuelan politics. It also is related to the U.N. in that the U.N. recognizes Maduro president of Venezuela, but the U.S. and Wikipedia recognizes Guaido as president of Venezuela.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Principles for Digital Development

Would some members from this WikiProject mind taking a look at Principles for Digital Development? There might be some COI editing involved based upon User talk: Diannaa#Principles for Digital Development, but that's something that can usually be sorted out without too much difficulty. I'm not seeing (at least at the moment) how this meets WP:GNG or even WP:NORG since it appears to be mainly sourced to the organization's website, even though the article might not specifically be about the organization per se. This might be a case where WP:NOBLE comes into play. Anyway, any input on this would be appreciated. I posting here because some of the content in the article seems to indicate there might be some connection to the UN, but I'm not sure about that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:18, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Wiki for UN

Logo of Wiki for UN

Dear project members,

I would like to announce the Wiki for UN writing campaign that will take place from 24-31 October with the goal of enriching Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects with content on topics related to the United Nations (UN) in order to commemorate 75 years from the foundation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.

The main goals of the campaign are to share knowledge about the UN's organisational structure and field of work in multiple languages, raise awareness about the activities and programmes that the organisation carries out throughout the world and lay grounds for more thorough coverage of topics related to the UN in the future.

You are welcome to take part in the campaign (see list of participants). There are also several article lists with more than 400 important articles compiled to ease the selection of articles.

Best regards.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 21:06, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

List of bilateral relations between member states of the United Nations

Hello. I had the idea of creating a matrix to present links to all articles about bilateral relations between member states of the United Nations. I think this would be useful to some readers in browsing Wikipedia's coverage of this topic, and useful for some editors in navigating across pages and emphasising which articles are lacking. I'm aware there are navboxes that sort of do this, but I can only seem to find examples from the perspective of a single country (e.g.: Template:Foreign relations of China). However, since I don't typically edit on this side of Wikipedia, I'm afraid this idea has already been implemented and I just don't know it, or perhaps there's some other reason why I shouldn't go ahead. I created a sample (click here) to demonstrate what I'm thinking. Please let me know what you think. Ypna (talk) 14:01, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

I withdraw the above request. Ypna (talk) 03:09, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi @KajenCAT, this is actually very incorrect and should be corrected.
The resolution that was passed is called A/RES/ES-11/4. A resolution with the name A/RES/ES-11/5 does not currently exist.
The underlying draft resolution of A/RES/ES-11/4 is called A/ES-11/L.5. We should mainly refer to it under the final resolution name though, not the draft resolution name.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
